Trying to revive an old game (Just need some expert to give me directions) Posted: 21 May 2021 08:03 PM PDT Hello friends! I don't really know if I'm at the right place, if not please redirect me to another sub-reddit that would be really appreciated. Also bare with me if it's a little long post. I used to play an old 2D chat game that I guess you can compare to club penguin/dofus. (image below) Sadly at some point the dev team didn't made enough money to keep everything running smoothly and the official website closed back in 2018. Some private servers went up and did pretty well for themselves bringing thousands of ppl back but that was until Flash player stopped being supported. What I want : I want to make a new private server for people to come and remember the good old times they had on this game. I want to keep it very polish and very simple, offering people to just enter a displayed username and connect so that way I wouldn't have to program a whole database for anything to be stored like passwords or whatever.. basically the game but desktop version What I know : In programming ? Absolutely nothing. I'm a total newbie. That don't mean I'm clueless tho
I would like to bring back this game online, just like they did. I understand they did hard work to retrieve the files that are missing and program a new database for their players but It's so frustrating they won't let anyone join the server freely.. Can you help ? Go and download the game if you want to, have a swing around the maps (installation with npm) maybe try to understand what's missing or what could I mean by "just choose a name and connect" Or just go and check out the files, I can see Javascript, React, TailwindCSS, So many things... How could I achieve this ? I have money, but no skills in programming. I'm ready to pay for a server to support 200 players+ if needed, but I don't know how to bring back the multiplayer back on. I don't know how to make an executable of it. Downloading with npm is a pain in the ass for regular ppl who don't know computers lmao. I got some free time on my hands to put into this and learn anything there is to learn, but I would rather keep it simple and pay a server or a database creating website (is that even a thing lol?) I mean It's still a flash player based game easily hackable so I would really like somebody to point me in the quickest way possible to do this :D [link] [comments] |
I need help with automatically extracting excel tables from images Posted: 21 May 2021 07:12 AM PDT I have screenshots of some in-game marketplaces which have data in excel-table-like layout but without edges and I want to turn those into excel tables. What exactly is this field specifically called, could you point me to the right subreddit? Many thanks! [link] [comments] |
How do websites like jolygram, pictame and picuki work? Posted: 21 May 2021 06:12 PM PDT I don't know much about programming but these sites let you search any Instagram user and they show you their posts and let you watch stories anonymously. They claim they dont host the content but I belive they create a cache of the content they get from Instagram. Also, does everytime Google or other crawlers ( yahoo, ubersuggest etc) crawl the website do they add new profiles though internal links? ( on every profile page the display you can click on followers and folleiing lists and click on those profiles). Btw, there some other sites that don't show any visible links (no comments, followers or anything else to click) on the pages, just stories and posts. How do the pages and images still end up on google results? [link] [comments] |
How do you get the latest data from an external API and push it to client via web socket? Posted: 21 May 2021 05:44 PM PDT Does my ExpressJS server need to use node-cron to poll data every second on the server? But wouldn't that be wasteful if there were no clients connected via web socket? How do I realistically and effectively do it? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 21 May 2021 09:47 AM PDT In my office there are tons of tasks that are just using tons of spreadsheets or the something was created with MS Access that has since turned into monsters. Jobs Programmers with Disabilities? Posted: 21 May 2021 06:00 AM PDT Does anyone know of a company that specializes in putting people with Disabilities into programming jobs? I know nothing about programming but have found good info using Reddit so I'm giving this a shot. My cousin is looking for a job but has cerebral palsy and other conditions. I'm trying to find a company or firm that specializes in placing disabled people in the tech industry. I appreciate any info or direction. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Trying to install git ... config file permission denied? Posted: 21 May 2021 03:24 PM PDT /Users/macuser/.config/git/attributes': Permission denied I'm receiving this issue over and over again when trying to access and utilize Git. This seems like a common issue but the resolution steps are a bit over my head in the articles I've found. Is there a straightforward way to give Git permission to my config file? [link] [comments] |
In all the hashing programs you have used, what do most programs seem to lack? Posted: 21 May 2021 10:46 AM PDT There are tons of hashing programs out there, and the majority of them are nearly the same, some providing algorithms that don't collide, some that provide older unsecure algorithms, but can you think of anything that they all lack, or any additional features you wished it had? How to deal with inexperience at work in a project/language i dont know? [feedback needed] Posted: 21 May 2021 01:25 AM PDT It's seems i need to clarify: i am willing to learn, right not an option to just ask to be move to what i like, etc. I'm here and i need to do what i have to do. Just asking for advice to be better and deliver. I work for a company that recently or always has rotated resources to different projects. If lucky you can stay all your life under one project and keep learning a language. I am from the unlucky ones. Yes i know i can always look for another job i am happy with the company but i guess i dont like C/batch. I have always been a UI guy. Rotation means it depends if they move you or not i been moved a lot, but now i dont think so So why do you guys recommend for me to start getting good or at least to the point to get the job done. I have to read C source codes and i dont think is easy for me as of now. I get confused reading it how can i debug it. I am getting somehow stress because i have to rely a lot of tech lead or peers which they dont mind but i do. I just want recommendations on what you guys would be doing in my place or whatever advice you can give me. Some tasks are time sensitive so is hard sometimes. Hope you can help a fellow programmer out. [link] [comments] |
Website programming: Wix or hardcode Posted: 21 May 2021 12:55 PM PDT I am building my own website and was wondering if it would be best to start off with Wix or code my own (I don't have much coding knowledge). I want to personalize it, so coding my own allows me to add more features I want than using a template from Wix. If I were to code the website on my own, how would I do this? [link] [comments] |
I need help with SwiftUI and decoding JSON data pulled from an API. Posted: 21 May 2021 12:51 PM PDT I'm pretty new to developing apps and working with Xcode and Swift and trying to get a handle on how to decode JSON responses from an API. I'm also trying to follow MVVM practices. I'm calling to an API that returns data structured like this: My understanding is I need a struct to decode this information into. This is what my struct looks like (it may be incorrect): So I want to be able to call this api. I have the correct address to call it because the dashboard on the website I'm using is showing I've hit it. Could I get some guidance on how to call it and decode the response? Currently I'm doing something like this: Thanks for any and all help. Again, my goal is to call this function, hit the API, decode the JSON response and store it into a variable I can use in my views elsewhere. Thanks! EDIT: It seems I'm confusing JSONSerialization with decoding json. Question still stands but I see I made that mistake. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 May 2021 08:26 AM PDT I have just received an email to do a coding test!! Elated! The email was 'powered by Hacker rank', which gives a big clue to where I could find similar tests to practice, I copied some the email into this post in case someone has seen something similar and could give specific advice? The job does not require the applicants to have programming knowledge, as successful applicants instead undergo full time training. I'm wondering if people could give any advice beyond the links they shared with me for me to ace this test? Email extract below The programming test is designed to test your problem solving skills more than your programming skills. As such, it does not require advanced programming knowledge. The test gives you 30 minutes to solve up to five problems by writing JavaScript code. It is very rare for applicants to solve all five problems within the time limit, so just solve as many as you can before you run out of time. Note that once you begin the test, a 30 minute countdown will begin, and the countdown cannot be paused or re-started. Preparation To best prepare for the JavaScript test we suggest that you read JavaScript Fundamentals* (link below) and complete the exercises in their tutorials before attempting the test. Doing this will give you a basic understanding of how to program in JavaScript, which will give you the tools you need to attempt the test. *JavaScript fundamentals: https://javascript.info/first-steps. You can use https://jsbin.com/pagesotixo/edit?js,console or the console in your browser to write and run JavaScript code. Let us know if you get stuck! Any help from the fine folks of reddit to help me get this job would be so deeply appreciated, thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Reasonable to expect vendor to escape " in JSON fields? Posted: 21 May 2021 12:07 PM PDT We are paying for data delivered via a REST API in JSON format. The API output is not escaped, so when a value has a double quote in it, the result looks like this: . . ., "field0":"this is clean output", "field1":"this is the " dirty output", "field2":"this is clean output", ... When we pointed this out to the vendor, they said they'd consider adding data cleansing to their next release, if they feel like it and the sun is shining, etc. This is a paid service (quite expensive). To me, they should of course make sure that their API that delivers JSON delivers valid JSON, and this looks like invalid JSON. But I'm a noob, so I honestly don't know if I'm lacking perspective here, and that's what this subreddit is for, right! Many thanks for any insights or perspective. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 21 May 2021 02:31 AM PDT Hey folks, I hope the title makes sense. I have an image like this: https://i.imgur.com/V3mYuEr.png The Image usually has one or multiple outlines as "closed shapes", so for example a circle, but only the edge of the circle is drawn (no filling). Now I would like to have a (random or not) starting point on this line and follow it along, storing the coordinates in a list or tuples or just somewhere. Whats the best way to start this? Curious about data scraping and machine learning Posted: 21 May 2021 09:57 AM PDT I'm new to programming but have a decent math/economics background. I am curious about the applications of machine learning and data scraping for an economic model I am working on, and I was wondering if machine learning and data scraping could be of use. I am wondering if it is possible to implement a scraper that is able to sort data based on the centrality of a directed graph. I think this would require some machine learning because the program would have to sort data based on an eigenvector of the connectedness of the nodes and examine whether a certain piece of data is, for instance, an apple or an orange (the Apple and orange metaphor is an analogy). Additionally, if this idea is possible where should I learn more about how to implement such a design/what language would best suit my needs. [link] [comments] |

is it okay to use string as primary key in a relational database? Posted: 21 May 2021 08:33 AM PDT i need to find records by a unique string I read about creating a database index for the column to index it. that column adds space tho right i was wondering if i could just have the string as my primary key instead? Download images off of a website. Posted: 20 May 2021 10:00 PM PDT Hello, this is my first post. I'm excited to work with you all! I want to download images from a website so I can view them with a program I made. So far, I've been able to use ctrl + s to save the webpage. I then access the folder associated with the webpage; all the pictures that contain the content are simply saved as "1.jpg", "2.jpg", etc.. I manually delete everything but these pictures(though not necessary, cleans up some space) and then use my program. As a student in computer science, this screams to me that it can be automated. My goal is to be able to type the website url into a program. The program will visit the website and download only the pictures that when saved using ctrl + s, have the format "1.jpg". So far, I have beginner-level experience; I've taken a total of 3 classes at my local university, from intro to programming to intro to algorithms and data structures. We've worked up to hash tables, bsts, and some basic sorting algorithms(bubbles sort, merge sort, etc.). As happy as I would be for recommendations on apps that already do this, I want to get the experience myself. If you have access to any resources, tutorials, or personal experience, I would be very grateful! [link] [comments] |
