Induction proof on the power of 3 Posted: 19 May 2021 03:17 AM PDT Hi, I am a Chemical Engineering graduate. Currently, I am self-learning Discrete Maths using the MIT OCW materials. I am stuck at Recitation 4 question number 4, in particular, i do not understand how did they arrive at the final solution (in particular the inductive step). The question and answer provided by MIT is follow: For the inductive step, I do understand step 1 whereby 3n+1 is equal to 3 copies of 3n . But I am not able to understand how step 2 is derived from step 1, in particular, where does the 1000...0001000...001 comes from? And also how does it sum up to 3 as stated in the solution. Appreciate if anyone could help me to understand this or point me to any articles that might be helpful. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
