Where do you keep the code for Web Components?

    Posted: 23 May 2021 03:38 PM PDT

Hey guys, noob question here. I'm trying to build an application, and I want my UI components to be reusable. I have been going through the Web Component tutorials and built components on Code Sandbox.

My question is, where is the best place to stick the HTML, CSS, and/or JavaScript code for a Web Component? In my view template? In its own subdirectory, imported using <script> and <link> tags?

Obviously there are many potential answers to this. I'm just asking, for maximum reliability and reusability, where should I put the Web Component code?

    I'm using a traditional MVC framework (Genie.jl).

Is it a good idea to learn web dev from scratch by following The Odin Project?

    Posted: 23 May 2021 03:41 PM PDT

Has anyone done it? What I mean by that is can one become a hirable webdev strictly by following The Odin Project? I feel like I need a well defined roadmap to stick to studying and The Odin Project is the best one I could find that covers web dev from all angles and tracks your progress. I'm aware that its pretty much impossible to finish this project in the near future, but will I build enough knowledge base to be a competent web dev if I stick to it for the next year or so? I'm willing to put 2 hours a day into it and some more in the weekends.

If someone is not old enough to get a job, what should they do with their web development knowledge? I heard freelancing is risky for minors, so what should I do instead?

Edit: I am not talking about making money, just what to do in general, and why am I being downvoted?

Hey guys, I'm a beginner at web dev and trying to learn the best practices as well as brush up my css.

Was wondering anyone would be interested in an informal weekly project thread, where people can submit their solutions and others can provide critique and help? I think this will be useful as practice as well as knowledge exchange, apologies if this is the wrong place to ask this.

Lightbox effect aligning to table rather than window

    Posted: 23 May 2021 12:10 PM PDT

Hello, I'm using this simple css code to generate a lighthouse effect for my images. It worked fine until I put the images into a table; now the lightbox effect is aligning to the table instead of the page edge. I'm just a novice; could anyone here advise me on the best way to fix this?

Is there any way to make a web-playlist just from css/html?

    Posted: 23 May 2021 11:30 AM PDT

I've recently learned html/css & i can make pretty cool websites. I'm wondering if there's any way to make a playlist without using java. I have seen some tutorials &/or code that shows you how to make a bare bones list thing (they call a "playlist" ). However, I'm trying to make my website with a playlist the next video etc. Also, is there a way i can use Iframe to do this? For example, i could make a playlist file and embed it into iframe?

How do you keep your website's code secret when it's plainly visible in console/sources?

    Posted: 23 May 2021 07:36 AM PDT

    Hi all.

I've reated a create-react-app site and linked a private github repo to heroku, deploying with Mars' buildpack.

Though all the code - every file - is plainly visible in the Sources tab of the devtools.

What's to stop someone just copy and pasting my project?

    Thanks

All of a sudden, some of my website pages are getting the "Blocked by Indian Govt." messages intermittently today

    Posted: 23 May 2021 11:17 AM PDT

I'm a small time blogger from India who hosts on Github Pages using custom domain and Cloudflare Flexi-SSL since many years. Everything was going well until today when all of a sudden, some of my web pages are getting blocked with nothing but a white background and this message in the HTML body:

Your requested URL has been blocked as per the directions received from Department of Telecommunications, Government of India. Please contact administrator for more information.

The strange thing is that this doesn't happen ALWAYS. If I hit refresh, it works for like 10-20 times and then sometimes the block page comes.

My blog consists of 100% technical stuff related to programming and blogging, so me taking a "panga" or political grudge with Govt. of India is totally out of question! What could be going on here?

    Edit

I'd also like to know if there is a (hopefully simple) process to get in touch with GOI and ask them why they've blocked my site?

    Edit

One more thing is that this happens only with Airtel ISP, all the other ISPs allow my site to function properly.

    Update

As it turned out, this problem got solved when I changed the Cloudflare mode from "Flexi SSL" to "Full SSL". In other words, "Flexi-SSL" enabled Cloudflare sites don't work nicely when the browser connects through Airtel network. Maybe CLoudflare and Airtel should get together and sort this out!

Problems with background image on Safari and Opera

    Posted: 23 May 2021 10:58 AM PDT

I'm using CSS that loads a background image for a landing page hero. The landing page works well in Chrome, Mozilla and Brave. The image loads fine and there's no issues with the page.

However, on Safari and Opera, the page becomes almost unusable with lots of lag when I scroll down the page. This is on desktop versions of those browsers, so definitely isn't a mobile issue.

Does anyone know what's causing this?

    CSS I'm using: ` .bg {

     background: url(/assets/background.jpg) no-repeat center center fixed; -webkit-background-size: cover; -moz-background-size: cover; -o-background-size: cover; background-size: cover }`

Is anyone aware of a CLI utility to view a "high level" summary of git subdirectories/projects?

    Posted: 23 May 2021 06:37 AM PDT

I'm trying to find a better way to see the "status" of all of my project subdirectories, ie. if something is up to date, or has changes to push, or possibly to query for remote incoming changes as well.

Does anyone know if there's a CLI tool that can do this, ie. type a command in a directory, and it will scan all subdirectories for git repos and print out a summary?

CLI isn't a requirement (GUI works too), but is preferred.

EDIT/SOLVE: Someone in another sub (r/git) mentioned multi-git-status, which works pretty well:
