    I'm going through The Odin Project and I have looked around on Google as well and it says that Linux and MacOS is preferred over windows for web development. Why is this so?

    Which path is more suited for my situation?

    Posted: 22 May 2021 06:22 PM PDT

    So I'm applying for a 6 months developer Internship and at the end they might hire you. I'm 34 and have no prior experience or skills in programming. The company hires without having any previous knowledge and train you from the start. I'm not exactly sure which path to take what they have is:

    • Front-end with html, CSS, Javascript, Angular, Angular Material, MVC

    • Back-end using C#

    • Databases with Transact-SQL using Microsoft SQL server

    • Mobile apps with Java for Android

    • Mobile apps with Swift for iOS

    • Progressive Web Apps with Angular, React, Node.js

      How would you rate them by dificulty level and which path do you think is more suited for inexperienced person trying to land a the job? I'm not in the US and the ageism here is strong so I kinda have to make it with this one or I might not get a 2nd chance. Front end looks interesting and so does mobile with iOS and Android, but I'm not sure what the progressive web apps are. I'm also trying to avoid the ones where math skills are more represented. Is Back-end much harder than Front-end? One last thing of small importance which of these paths would teach me skills related to pentesting and ethical hacking as I'm showing interest in them as a hobby.

    Advanced JS learning path - Hacker Zero

    Posted: 22 May 2021 11:56 AM PDT

    Probably one of the best learning paths for JS I've seen. Covers a lot of ground.

    I know there's a TON of JS fans out there and a lot of programmers like myself trying to brush up or just improve in certain areas. This is like a gym for your brain.

    How do you describe coding?

    Posted: 22 May 2021 09:42 PM PDT

    I have put together a learn to code YouTube channel aimed at the beginner. I have a lot of people telling me what I'm doing is great and good for me, but then they ask "What does learn to code mean?" I am starting to think that the average person who might enjoy learning how to code doesn't know what it is, so it's not something they consider. Programming has brought me a lifetime of happiness and pain and I want to share it, but not sure how to describe it to them in one or two sentences. It's not building web sites and they don't know what a web application is... They understand mobile apps but I'm not specifically teaching that either.

    How would you describe what learning to code is, for someone who doesn't know?

    How would you tell High School and College age kids maybe from under represented areas that this is something that doesn't need a degree and might be fun and maybe lead to a career? I wanna give back but without a clear message I might not reach the audiences I'm seeking...

    Thanks for any ideas!

    hi all,

    trying to teach the first steps to learn at least some level of code and am starting with the https://javascript.info/hello-world book/guide. unfortunately, I'm having trouble on the very first lesson.

    i can't seem to replicate the code when I type the same thing in my browser. I keep getting the same syntax error, seen in the link below. Even when I've looked at other tutorials and try to replicate other simple code, I keep getting the same error..

    help me get past lesson one?

    Past and Future Turtles: The Evolution of the Logo Programming Language (Part 1)

    Posted: 22 May 2021 07:08 PM PDT

    When I was a young child, one of my best friends was a turtle.

    Not a real turtle, although that would have been fun, but a virtual one. My turtle lived inside of an Apple II, an early 8-bit computer, at my elementary school.

    When I first met her, my turtle, she didn't do much. She just sat there. It didn't take long for me to realize that in order to get her to do something, I would need to prompt her. To do this, there was a literal prompt on the screen, beckoning me to type something.

    ?

    And so I typed FORWARD, thinking that this should, obviously, move the turtle forward.

    NOT ENOUGH INPUTS TO FORWARD

    Undeterred, I revised my input to FORWARD 10, just picking an arbitrary number. Although I was only six years old, I deduced that FORWARD needed a quantity, quantities were numbers and well, ten was a good start.

    And hooray, the turtle moved! I was in love with my turtle from that moment on. I learned that she could also move BACK, and turn LEFT and RIGHT. I didn't know what degrees were when I first met my turtle, but by the time I finished our first session together, I did!

    Learning Java, I have 2 books related to Java 8 and one related to Java 14, which one to use? Use both?

    Posted: 22 May 2021 09:09 PM PDT

    Hello guys, I have 2 Books for Java 8, one which I bought like 2 years ago when I had motivation but it dropped due to some struggle IRL.

    One is a "Java - The basics" type of book with around 350-400 pages and one with around 1400 Pages (Java ist auch eine Insel / Java is also an island) which is also for Java 8.

    But I got a new book gifted a few days ago, which has around 500 pages related to Java 14.

    Since I'm a complete noob, I wanted to ask if it matters which one I use? Is it better to use the ones for 8 since I have 2 books for references, can I use both since the older stuff still works completely fine, can I use stuff of the new book with an old version of Java or does maybe just some stuff not work but the most will?

    Sorry, like I said I'm a complete beginner and I don't know which makes the most sense.

    I have an idea for a project, not sure where or how to begin.

    Posted: 22 May 2021 11:40 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

    I'm a rising Junior in college. I have a lot of experience using C++, and I'm also a knitter (you know, with yarn and stuff).

    I love knitting and I love designing new knitting patterns or visualizing what a project would look like after knitting. I've had an idea for a coding project.

    It would be like a stitch map but instead, its 3D modeled and can be round. I hope that makes sense?

    I specifically want to focus on sweaters for now, and maybe branch off into others if it goes well.

    So for example, I want to design a sweater. A knitter would be able to type out what the pattern says, and there would be a 3D model that follows and visualizes the instructions. This would include inputted colors so that they can create colored patterns and stuff.

    I'm not sure if it's making sense. This is something I'm very passionate about, but I just dont know where to begin. I'd appreciate any advice, thanks!

    [JavaScript] Cannot call window.open from Chrome extension context

    Posted: 22 May 2021 11:30 PM PDT

    I have an old Chrome extension that used to be able to load images in page to display for users. Now because of a CloudFlare change it no longer works. I was trying to see if I could open all images in a new tab as a work around. I think its possible, but for some reason window.open doesn't work when I'm executing from the extension context e.g. : https://i.imgur.com/JekCcqD.png

    But it does work when executed from the root/top context : https://i.imgur.com/APFPgzS.png

    How can I allow the child context to call/use window.open? For my Chrome settings I have allowed pop ups from any source/site : https://i.imgur.com/2oYc130.png

    Anything I can do to fix this? Any info would be appreciated (I don't remember Chrome having contexts for consoles)

    Please help me program my ti84....

    Posted: 22 May 2021 07:01 PM PDT

    So I was exploring an app in my ti84 calculator that finds the solution of polynomial equations with a power ranging from 0 to 10, and I was wondering how they programmed the app.

    Did they find the intersection between the graph of the equation and x axis?

    How would you program this?

    If this is not the case, what commands would they have used for this application?

    WPF C# // How to Convert this existing ListBox code I've got to work with a named Grid or Stackpanel?

    Posted: 22 May 2021 10:05 PM PDT

    Hey there!

    So I was curious (using WPF/C#) what the best way I can get this to work OUSTSIDE of a Listbox.

    Currently I'm trying to implement a certain aesthetic to my project, and while this works perfectly with a LISTBOX.. I absolutely do not like the options available with it. Ideally I'd like to be able to have a separate grid or Stackpanel to associate with it instead, however since they both do not have Item Collections integrated, I cannot use "name.Items.Cast" with those options.

    I'm just trying to map this to a button that will pull the current state with each Togglebutton (or Checkbox) I have set, and then behind those I've got a few private strings. Kind of besides the point though.

    Anyways, how can I simply transition this existing code to work with a Stackpanel or specific named grid?

    private void ClickTest(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)

    {

    var selectedItems = ListBoxOptions.Items.Cast<ToggleButton>().Where(x => x.IsChecked == true).Select(x => x.Content).ToList();

    //OutputText = string.Join("\n", selectedItems);

    string Passable = (string.Join(",", selectedItems));

    OutputText = Passable.ToString();

    }

    Learning programming as a pre-mechanical engineering student

    Posted: 22 May 2021 10:04 PM PDT

    Hi all,

    I will be starting university this upcoming fall for mechanical engineering. I am interested in working in mechatronics and aerospace, but I also want to learn programming to expand my job opportunities and skills. I would like to have a software/programming co-op in my university experience, so how I would start on my path to learning programming to land myself a programming co-op? I have this summer, and I am definitely planning to use it to build myself up before I start my first year!

    I am interested in applying code to making something physical work (I love working with Arduinos, which I'm learning right now!) and I am interested in machine learning. I have a little experience with Python and C++.

    Thank you in advance!

    How does OOP work if there is no obvious 'object'?

    Posted: 22 May 2021 09:57 PM PDT

    Something I struggle with regarding OOP is when I want to code a function (something needs to happen) but there is no obvious object, no obvious thing that does that function. In every book/tutorial/vid they always talk about Animals, and Animals makeSounds() or something. But it isn't always so obvious as that.

    For example, for school, I have to make a program that is basically just a scheduling application that interacts with a database that stores customer info + appointments. Part of this project involves having to create a login window that takes a user name and password, checks if it exists in a database, and shows an error message if it's not there. If I'm trying to stick to OOP concepts here, I need to create a class that handles the logging in... but what is that class supposed to represent? What kind of 'object' is it? And why should I make a class when it does 1 and only 1 thing? Or maybe I'm mistaken in that assumption.

    So, in general terms, how do you create classes to perform functions that don't really represent any 'real' object?

    How Do Servers Know When You Are Automating a GET or POST Request?

    Posted: 22 May 2021 05:42 PM PDT

    I have been experimenting with web automation for a little while with Python and NodeJS. One thing I have come across are certain cites blocking requests.

    When using things like a web driver, there are no issues. From what I understand, a web driver essentially acts like a human.

    I guess where I get confused is if GET and POST requests are how you navigate a website, and something like a web driver can go undetected, how can individual GET and POST requests get detected? Does it have to do with headers and cookies? Or is there more to it?
