Really helpful tips to improve a websites looks.

I'm interested in building a webapp where a user plugs in either an address or a zip code, and the app tells them how far away they are from a certain business, with the ability to expand features later on. What technologies should I be focusing on?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 01:27 PM PST

This is kind of a pet project and I'm giving myself around three years to work on it.

My web development experience is pretty limited, I made a bunch of websites about a decade ago but this was before MVC got popular so all of my websites were essentially an HTML file, a CSS file, a JS file, a database, and a crudely hacked together 'back end'. I tried to build a build a "plug in your address and I'll show you all the Dunkin Donuts restaurants within a 5, 10, or 15 mile radius" website but I couldn't figure out how to make that happen.

I know a lot has changed since then and I'd like to give it another try, not necessarily with Dunkin Donuts. Ideally I'd like to use the Google Maps API because I've used it before in a different context.

I'm trying to learn Javascript and react and trying to get a front end role hopefully be full stack one day. Just wondering what the day to day is like and what they expect you to know when u first start out.

    Google Web Designer clickTag question

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 01:13 PM PST

Please delete if not allowed etc.
I need help with adding a clickTag in an HTML5 display in Google Web Designer. I used the events panel, and when I run it through the ad validator, it comes back with custom exit not allowed. I don't know how to fix this. I need people to be able to click on my ad and go to a new webpage.

I'm so frustrated. Why would Google Web Designer have a feature/function that isn't allowed anymore? Any answer I find is very complex. This is the only answer I can find on Google, and I don't understand it:

"Google Display Network no longer supports new HTML5 ads with modified clickability using Tap Area in ads from Google Web Designer or using Javascript ExitApi.exit(), since December 11th 2017. We'd suggest removing any uses of Tap Area or calls to Javascript ExitApi.exit() before you upload the ad again: https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/6335679
You can add the destination URL and the tracking on the ads final landing page."

I feel like this is a normal, easy thing that programs like this should do. I should add that I don't know how to use javascript. I barely know anything about CSS and HTML too. I'm primarily a print designer. I'm completely out of my element, overwhelmed and beyond frustrated. Help. Please!

    What's your workflow?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 12:35 PM PST

    Hello all!

I'm fairly new to doing design/build work for clients(usually it's one or the other), so I was wondering from more experienced devs and designers out there, how would you recommend taking a design(.ai, .xd, etc.) and making it into a fully coded site.

Right now, I basically just use the info from my xd files(widths, sizing, colors, etc.) and just code from scratch. While this works, since I'm not a very experienced developer, I feel like this takes more time than it should. I have tried to use XD's export plugins, but those don't seem quite right and I feel like I end up redoing a lot of the code anyways.

My question basically boils down to, what is your workflow for when you wireframe, design, and develop a particular website?

Anybody know of a web-based video player that accurately supports TTML timed text files?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 03:56 PM PST

I'm looking for a web based video player that will accurately display ttml formatted timed text files. I've seen a few that will convert the file (or the cues within the file) to vtt style formatting, but the vtt format never seems to keep the detailed positioning/formatting (just the very basic styling like italicized/bold). Does anyone know of a paid or free solution?

How many screens do you use when developing?

Just curious to see the spread among webdevs. Note that it's total number of screens, so 1 laptop with 2 external monitors is 3 screens.

How do you get high payment free lance projects?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 02:12 AM PST

To all those who make a living out of working freelance - how do you manage to get clients? I have been working freelance since 2 years and have only scored a maximum project of Rs 7,000 (around 95$) while I see newbies getting 500$ to make extremely low quality websites. I am confident enough that I can make better websites than these, you can see my portfolio here - shivank.writeroo.in I just want to know how do you market your services to potential clients, and how do you manage to make them understand the price is justified? I would like to get a start in the freelance field, just need some guidance from experts like you. Thank you

    Tools for creating design palettes?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 03:00 PM PST

Are there any good tools for creating a design palette that includes fonts, colors, images.... Essentially an easy way to create a design "Mood Board" with all of the parts in one place. Right now I'm using a bunch of separate tools to do this and then putting it all together in yet another piece of software.

Use streaming operators in React Components

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 08:51 AM PST

So recently I had to do some stuff with React and realized that basic streaming operations are particularly non-trivial in React. So I created a little library to allow using streaming operators (specifically, callbag based operators) on props / state / variables inside Components:

    https://github.com/loreanvictor/react-callbag-streams

I don't know maybe some of you fellas find this useful as well.

Help designing a tagging/database search system

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 02:41 PM PST

I want to make a web app (preferably with php and mysql) that searches through pre-tagged items. The trick is that each item can have a large amount of tags in one field and a lot of text in another. How should I design this application to be fairly efficient?

For instance, what data structure should I use to hold all my tags? How do you search these tags other than loading all objects and checking for a value in a tag array?

I have basic experience with php and mysql but i wasn't sure how to approach this problem without a disgusting amount of horribly inefficient spaghetti. All help or pointing me in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.

Should I just use React for the easiest way to programtically update a web page

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 09:52 PM PST

Hey I'm new to working in web dev, and I'm looking for advice on the best way to update a single page site I'm trying to build.

Not done this before, but fairly competent in general programming (C#, Java) just lack experienced in JS and the DOM.

So I'm using a backend API that supplies product details in JSON, and I've figured out how to consume that data using JS (I'm actually turning it into a custom object from that but I digress).

My front end is using a Bootstrap template which I have lightly customised, and I've set up some id tags to use as a reference to append raw HTML to the DOM programatically, using JS that polls the API server every so often for updates before creating the HTML to display the new product items.

This doesn't actually work currently as I'm running into a security issue (which I'm sure I could fix by modifying my CSP), but I've been thinking that there must be an easier approach to all of this as its a pretty standard technique used on the web from what I've seen.

I'm early in the project and building as I learn so I don't mind refactoring to use a helper library that would make what I'm doing easier, so can anyone recommend what would help out?

At some point, I figured that I was going to have to learn React and would be rebuilding the front end using it, but should I just do this now?

Would it allow me to do what I want quite trivially.

I don't want to use a full on framework though. I do like what I've heard about React regarding picking individual components to build the page rather than having certain things dictated.

My only concern is the learning curve, but I'm hoping that what I want to do is fairly simple and well documented that I can get up to speed fairly quickly following code.

    Thank you.

    Web Hosting for a beginner?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 12:14 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I've recently bought a domain, but now I need a web hosting service and every website that I've visited requires me to pay a lump sum straight off the bat. We're talking like £80 and I don't have that money. I need a service than can charge me monthly, do anyone know of anything?

Additional info: it'll be used for a mmo browser game.

I'll need an email domain too for support.

    Thank you.

Entering world of newsletters and transactional email

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 04:39 AM PST

    Dear webdevs,

I'm considering diving into the world of generated emails (for creating custom newsletters, and similar), and I'm looking for opinions on how to go about this.

My response to clients for the 10 past years has been "please figure it out yourselves with mailchimp". I had some good reasons for this:

    1. you cant unsend an email, this creates a lot of stress about making mistakes I rather not deal with
    2. email HTML is (used to be?) a complete nightmare
    3. having to deal with spam blocking and making sure the mail is actually delivered is a tricky topic, as well.
    4. I rather not store any emails (sensitive data) in the CMS and rather not deal with consent.

Now I have a client who is looking for an automatically generated email solution and I thought maybe it's a good time to take another look at this. They're tired of copy-pasting from the cms to mailchimp.

They want to compose their own emails from content taken from the existing website CMS. It's in three separate languages and also with a segmented list.

    1. can be solved with the client authoring their own emails.
    2. can be solved with something like https://mjml.io/faq
    3. can be solved by using a transactional email provider, such as mailjet or mandrill
    4. (& 5) I'm not sure - it would be great if the mails can stay in mailchimp/campaign monitor, etc. That would mean I have to tie myself to one solution, and this is something I'm hoping to avoid.

What experiences and recommendations do you have with this? I'm using processwire (php) as backend since many years. Every now and then I look for alternatives, but so far I don't have a better alternative.

How do you go about authoring? Would you build a preview function yourself?

How do you deal with list management? For example, if you have a segmented list in mailchimp, I suppose there must be a way to send to these segments, for example?

For a newsletter, is it better to use Mailchimp templates and programmatically fill them, than to build your own templates? The drawback is that I tie myself to them, this is something I hope to avoid.

This is all a bit new to me so I'm not sure I'm even asking the right questions, but I suppose for my particular case I have in front of me, it would be something in between a regular mailchimp newsletter and a transactional email.

    thanks!
