    FEEDBACK FRIDAY #425

Well it's Friday here so lets play each others games, be nice and constructive and have fun! keep up with devs on twitter and get involved!

Post your games/demos/builds and give each other feedback!

    Feedback Friday Rules:

Suggestion: As a generally courtesy, you should try to check out a person's game if they have left feedback on your game. If you are leaving feedback on another person's game, it may be helpful to leave a link to your post (if you have posted your game for feedback) at the end of your comment so they can easily find your game.

-Post a link to a playable version of your game or demo

-Do NOT link to screenshots or videos! The emphasis of FF is on testing and feedback, not on graphics! Screenshot Saturday is the better choice for your awesome screenshots and videos!

-Promote good feedback! Try to avoid posting one line responses like "I liked it!" because that is NOT feedback!

-Upvote those who provide good feedback!

-Comments using URL shorteners may get auto-removed by reddit, so we recommend not using them.

Building my dream game - but stuck on the final detail regarding future updates to it

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 08:08 AM PST

    Happy New Year Devs!

Long-story short... I have a 3/4-year game idea that Im trying to bring to fruition this year and I'm stuck on one last detail:

    A) do I make it a continually updated/patched game (events/heroes/etc) B) do I spend more time working in everything ahead of time that I want to add to avoid bumps down the road in the updating/patching process

I'm using GameMaker and looking to release for PC/Mac through the Steam store.

Ideally, I would like to continuously add content to my game after it releases (i.e. new characters, adventures/events, items, etc.) - but I cannot find a solution to my main concern on moving forward:

    • If a player downloads and plays my game on Steam with the unlocked Red/Blue characters, and then I want to now add a new "Yellow" character with cool new skills in an update, am I able to do that without the player having to start the game over? Essentially, how would I maintain their save data from patch to patch when adding new content? (Apologies if this is answered elsewhere, but I've googled to no avail for a solution!)

I love FTP server-based games that have updates and events/dungeons and new "heroes" released from time-to-time, but as a solo-dev I can't seem to find a way - or - know of a solution on how to patch games users are already playing - or, if it's an impossible feat without a studio or a dev team's assistance.

I'm hoping someone may be able to help explain how patching an existing game on steam works, or if building a server-based game as a solo-dev is something that's even needed/doable.

I appreciate all/any insight on this topic, or even any links to similar q&a threads.

Hope everyone has a great start to their year!

Withhold Rate - Royalty Copyright and Royalty Film

Hello, I am planning on putting a game on steam but I am not a US citizen nor I have a business in the US and I wonder what is this Royalty Film withhold rate and royalty copyright. Will I have to pay the full 30%?

    Help Needed w/ Steam Upload

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 08:57 AM PST

Okay, so, I'm trying to upload my game to Steam while on Mac, which is probably a dumb idea in itself. And because of that, I'm running into the following error:

    Steam>run_app_build /Users/(name)/Downloads/sdk/tools/ContentBuilder/scripts/app_build_1513120.sh

KeyValues Error: RecursiveLoadFromBuffer: got NULL key in file appbuild [offset: 544]

    appbuild, depots,

src/tier1/KeyValues.cpp (3000) : Assertion Failed: Error while parsing text KeyValues for resource appbuild

[2021-01-01 11:52:22]: ERROR! App build file has invalid format: /Users/(name)/Downloads/sdk/tools/ContentBuilder/scripts/app_build_1513120.sh.

If anybody experienced with this could point out what's going wrong/how to fix it, I'd be hugely appreciative.

Hello! I'm trying tpo make my first game in an rpg sort of style. I've started working on the sprites and graphics today, but the only programming language I am at least mediochre in is python. Should I work on using a different language? If so, what resources should I use to go about learning it?
