- Hello! I'm trying tpo make my first game in an rpg sort of style. I've started working on the sprites and graphics today, but the only programming language I am at least mediochre in is python. Should I work on using a different language? If so, what resources should I use to go about learning it?

Feedback Friday #425 - A Fresh Start Posted: 31 Dec 2020 08:53 PM PST FEEDBACK FRIDAY #425 Well it's Friday here so lets play each others games, be nice and constructive and have fun! keep up with devs on twitter and get involved! Post your games/demos/builds and give each other feedback! Feedback Friday Rules: Suggestion: As a generally courtesy, you should try to check out a person's game if they have left feedback on your game. If you are leaving feedback on another person's game, it may be helpful to leave a link to your post (if you have posted your game for feedback) at the end of your comment so they can easily find your game. -Post a link to a playable version of your game or demo -Do NOT link to screenshots or videos! The emphasis of FF is on testing and feedback, not on graphics! Screenshot Saturday is the better choice for your awesome screenshots and videos! -Promote good feedback! Try to avoid posting one line responses like "I liked it!" because that is NOT feedback! -Upvote those who provide good feedback! -Comments using URL shorteners may get auto-removed by reddit, so we recommend not using them. Building my dream game - but stuck on the final detail regarding future updates to it Posted: 01 Jan 2021 08:08 AM PST Happy New Year Devs! Long-story short... I have a 3/4-year game idea that Im trying to bring to fruition this year and I'm stuck on one last detail: A) do I make it a continually updated/patched game (events/heroes/etc) B) do I spend more time working in everything ahead of time that I want to add to avoid bumps down the road in the updating/patching process I'm using GameMaker and looking to release for PC/Mac through the Steam store. Ideally, I would like to continuously add content to my game after it releases (i.e. new characters, adventures/events, items, etc.) - but I cannot find a solution to my main concern on moving forward:
I love FTP server-based games that have updates and events/dungeons and new "heroes" released from time-to-time, but as a solo-dev I can't seem to find a way - or - know of a solution on how to patch games users are already playing - or, if it's an impossible feat without a studio or a dev team's assistance. I'm hoping someone may be able to help explain how patching an existing game on steam works, or if building a server-based game as a solo-dev is something that's even needed/doable. I appreciate all/any insight on this topic, or even any links to similar q&a threads. Hope everyone has a great start to their year! -RJ | SEEDZ&TWIGZ [link] [comments]

Posted: 01 Jan 2021 08:57 AM PST Okay, so, I'm trying to upload my game to Steam while on Mac, which is probably a dumb idea in itself. And because of that, I'm running into the following error: Steam>run_app_build /Users/(name)/Downloads/sdk/tools/ContentBuilder/scripts/app_build_1513120.sh KeyValues Error: RecursiveLoadFromBuffer: got NULL key in file appbuild [offset: 544] appbuild, depots, src/tier1/KeyValues.cpp (3000) : Assertion Failed: Error while parsing text KeyValues for resource appbuild [2021-01-01 11:52:22]: ERROR! App build file has invalid format: /Users/(name)/Downloads/sdk/tools/ContentBuilder/scripts/app_build_1513120.sh. If anybody experienced with this could point out what's going wrong/how to fix it, I'd be hugely appreciative. [link] [comments]
