    A Dynamically-Sized Sticky Sidebar with HTML and CSS

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 11:02 AM PST

    I volunteered to make a website for a non-profit. A small business saw my name on that website's footer and asked me if I would redo their portfolio website for them, even after I explained I only used a drag & drop builder. Should I accept or would I be letting them down? Please read description.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 11:33 AM PST

    Hope everyone is safe & well.

    I'm a programming student. Tech has always been a hobby and I happen to have built a few drag & drop websites for personal use over the years. I became somewhat involved with a non-profit recently and bought them a domain and made them a basic site using a drag & drop builder. I am not yet proficient with HTML, Javascript, CSS, etc.

    A local small business saw that website and asked me if I can update their portfolio site. In their industry, it is normal to show your products online but to only sell them on the phone or in-person (each customer gets a different quote). I am capable of doing what they asked. My issue is that I think they can have someone build that website from scratch instead of having to pay a monthly subscription to Wix/Weebly etc.

    I fully explained my qualifications to them, and they insisted that they would be ok with my work. I did not give them a quote but they did indicate that they would be ok with a fee of ~$700 in addition to the monthly subscription for the drag & drop builder.

    I want to reiterate that I am not out to con them (it's a small community and it would be bad for me in the long run) and I was very clear & up-front about my "qualifications".

    Would I be shooting myself in the foot by accepting, or is this an easy-money Godsend? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

    First time handling a non-trivial database, realising my SQL knowledge is lacking and would love to know your best resources for improving.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:58 AM PST

    Working with a very large, old and messy database after only having only ever worked with databases I've created and populated myself. I'm using the queries in the codebase to try and frankenstein together the queries I need but it's slow going and painful at times.

    I'm using MySQL workbench to test my queries but I feel I struggle with writing longer ones, I feel so unsure about how everything works and what I can chain together? A recent example had me trying to add a condition to a join and I feel so overwhemed by the syntax? I don't feel like I really understand the rules, when or where I can add conditions and what portions of the query those conditions will apply to.

    What resources did you use to better understand SQL syntax and decipher the error messages?

    Animation Scrolling Libraries?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 03:07 PM PST

    Does anyone know what library they used to make the scrolling effects on this website?

    I don't want to trigger animations; I want to have animations that are directly related to your scroll position.

    Do you think they used scroll magic for that website?

    What's the easiest way to create scroll-based animations (not trigger on scroll)?

    Checkbox not console logging when clicked [JavaScript]

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:21 PM PST

    Hey all,

    I'm trying to make it so that when I click on the checkbox on my HTML page, it will console.log('test'), however, that doesn't seem to be the case. Here is my code:

    HTML Code:

    <div>
    <input type="checkbox" class="checkbox" id="chk" />
    <label class="label" for="chk">
    <i class="fas fa-moon"></i>
    <i class="fas fa-sun"></i>
    <div class="ball"></div>
    </label>
    </div>

    JavaScript Code (They are in-between my <script> tags):

    var chk = document.getElementById('chk');

    if (chk.checked === true) {
    console.log('test');
    }

    When I clicked the checkbox, it wasn't working.

    I also added this bit of JavaScript code to check if its not checked.

    console.log(chk.checked)

    When I load the HTML page, it does log it in the console (I checked using the chrome dev tools)

    So I'm really confused as to why my if statement isn't working...

    Thank you!

    Theme builder vs Page Builder vs Bought themes for speed ?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 11:21 AM PST

    Hi,

    After long researches, I still need your opinions. I want to develop websites (e-shop and showcase) for small businesses. But I don't know what to pick to optimize the website's speed. Yet, I don't want to code the theme from scratch, it would be too expensive.

    Do you recommand me to use a Theme builder like Prestabuilder, a Page one like Elementor or to buy a theme and changing it through the code ?
    Thank you

    Incorporating data from python script result into js script w/ node js

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 01:10 PM PST

    I'll try to explain this as clearly as possible, I'm normally a front end designer and I'm a bit in over my head with an ambitious node js project using python.

    Basically I have a python script I already wrote and have working using this tutorial that scrapes a subreddit (using praw/pandas) for top posts and their links over each time period option (all, day, week, month, year) and it currently puts those results into a table which is saved to an HTML file (but that's just so I can make sure it's getting the right output, ultimately I just need the data).

    I also have the front end of a site built in a node js app and I need to find out how I can get the data from that python output (and I would prefer to have the python script just run once a day or on some set time interval and save the data instead of running it each time the user accesses the site) and use it to generate the site's content with js. I already know js, I just need to know how to access the data with it.

    I hope that's clear, any help would be awesome.

    Authoring a book with Packt

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 02:18 PM PST

    Yesterday, I was a approached on LinkedIn by a lady who works for Packt. She asked me if I'd be interested in authoring a technical book for them. I've never thought about publishing a book, nor have I ever desired to.

    But the thought of seeing my name on a book feels great.

    I'm just wondering if anyone here's done this before?

    I found a Quora thread on some people's experience and it seems mostly negative but with some positive.

    I've no idea about publishing or what it entails other than what I've seen in movies so I'm really in two minds about the whole thing. Heck, I don't even know if I have the time to be able to commit to this with work and family.

    Cannot initialize braintree hosted fields when using server side generated client token

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 02:16 PM PST

    I'm using the hosted fields example from braintree:

    https://developers.braintreepayments.com/guides/3d-secure/client-side/javascript/v3

    Inside their javascript there is a function which calls:

    https://braintree-sample-merchant.herokuapp.com/client_token

    I substitute that endpoint with my own, which generates my client token using the settings I got from braintree sandbox.

    #settings.py from braintree import Configuration, Environment Configuration.configure( Environment.Sandbox, BT_MERCHANT_ID, BT_PUBLIC_KEY, BT_PRIVATE_KEY ) #views.py import braintree def return_client_token(request): return JsonResponse({ "client_token": braintree.ClientToken.generate() })

    My endpoint returns the client token, but when I use it, the hosted fields do not materialize. The length of the key from the Braintree's example endpoint is 3664, whereas my is 2364.

    Thanks in advance.

    New to CSS, for webpage layouts should I start directly with CSS grids or make divs and resize them?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 06:42 AM PST

    I'm making my first project and I have a general idea of how CSS works, but I'm confused about the overall structure. The way I understand it is that each section (e.g. header, main, photos, body, content etc) is a box that can be resized. So I can make a basic webpage like that.

    But I know that I can also use CSS grid to do something similar. What's the best way or at least the way I should learn first at least? What is the generally best accepted practice/most efficient way?

    Creating First Website, Where To Begin (Specific Info Inside)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:51 AM PST

    Hello there,

    I am in the very beginning stages of creating a website to accompany my movie instagram account (have the layout, some basic info, instagram plugin, etc.). I want the website to be a place where people can go to see my rankings, my weekly streaming picks, discuss movies, and get a look at some news/trailers. I have started doing this on Wordpress and hosting on Host Gator.

    One of my good friends that is great at web development told me that since I basically want to include a database of my rankings / a forum for people to discuss, that making this site the way I am could take me much longer than it should instead of using something simpler like Wix.

    MY QUESTION: What is the best way to make my vision into reality? Should I switch over to Wix? Should I stick with what I'm already doing? Which is easier/simpler? I don't have almost any experience when it comes to webdev, but I will put in the hours. I really just want to get the ball rolling here and feel like I am wasting time if I should be doing it differently. Thanks in advance for any information!

    is it common to block direct access to api serving frontend?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 01:24 PM PST

    So we have a single page application that has a Python backend (using Flask). We've decided to go with session based auth instead of JWT to give some context.

    The frontend has a few input forms, and they are designed in a way such that when a user submits a form, a request is made to our backend to do some checks and then asks the user to confirm their input once more, at which point the data is sent back to a different route and inserted to the db if no changes were made.

    STEPS:

    1. initial fill out of form
    2. user submits and backend validates data
    3. data is sent back to user to confirm again
    4. user accepts and data is submitted and inserted

    What prevents a user from discovering from network connections the routes that are being hit, taking their session id that is in a cookie, and using something like POSTMAN to circumvent step 2/3 for example and directly calling step 4 route to insert data?

    Is that something we should be concerned about?

    Anyone got any advice regarding build vs buy with OIDC/ID server providers?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 11:09 AM PST

    Hey all,

    I'm currently doing some digging around whether to build or buy a solution for OpenID connect/federated identity etc. There's a tonne to get my head around and I'm starting to drown in options.

    Does anyone have any experience in deciding which route to go down? In a previous gig, I saw the company implement Gigya/SAP. In the current gig, people are suggesting using IdentityServer 4, which I'm wanting to throw out of the window because I'm on a team of Node/JS devs instead of .net developers.

    As we're an Azure shop as well I looked into Azure B2C but couldn't decide if it was worth the investment and plenty of Google searches throw Okta into the mix.

    If completely going down the Node build it route I was looking at https://github.com/panva/node-oidc-provider which is certified, but unsure of how easy it is to stand up.

    The use case we've got is reasonably straight forward, a load of relatively basic front ends, a backend which currently stores username and passwords which we want to ideally migrate to stand alone, but still store all of the profile on the legacy system.

    Any advice appreciated!

    Used NetlifyCMS with Gatsby to build a site for small dogs

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:43 PM PST

    Used NetlifyCMS with Gatsby to build a site for small dogs

    I have a Brussels Griffon, so finding things for him being small and flat-faced were pretty hard. I decided to spend Black Friday building a little website for other small dog owners to see what products I really liked. https://smolpups.com/

    https://preview.redd.it/8c2f39jlyg261.png?width=2880&format=png&auto=webp&s=01c7b5594dc473974699deb12a47f5e1301cf363

    Things I liked about NetlifyCMS:

    • It's free and kind of easy to set up. I couldn't get one of the files to work (https://www.netlifycms.org/docs/collection-types/#file-collections I even copied/pasted the example of nested fields inside fields and it still didn't work), but since it is a small site and just JSON I made another file instead of a combined one. I didn't make any custom widgets.
    • Having a collection of files and folders. I was able to use files and import JSON for things like the menu and use folders for categories and products.

    Things I didn't like about NetlifyCMS:

    https://preview.redd.it/qx6qk4r81h261.png?width=2880&format=png&auto=webp&s=3404d76777105b6ebf8779c9736fc08c971a2d92

    • Only being able to see the title (and image if there was one) of the things you made in a folder. It would be nice to be able to customize it where you could see the title and some other fields.
    • You cannot edit multiple posts at once and then publish. Every post you change has to be published before changing the next one. This results in a ton of commits and a ton of builds. Netlify limits to 300 minutes of builds, so two days on this small site almost capped me for the month before I had to join the next tier. It would be nice if the data was stored in localStorage and you could publish at once, but I get some sites might be over that threshold (BUT that's a really big site for this CMS).
    • I had a list widget with a relation widget inside it. When dragging the relation widget in a different order it would either take several seconds for the selects to reappear with a value. Sometimes they didn't at all, but the data was still there.

    Maybe you can do some of these things, so please let me know if you can.

    Gatsby was probably a little excessive for this site, but I figured if it ever grew then I would already be set up for that. Let me know if you're interested in any of the component and I can get a demo up with the source code.

    Made a little web game to pay homage to my favorite game ever!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 12:31 PM PST

    Question: Is data sent to an HTTPS website also encrypted if it's coming from a script?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:31 AM PST

    I want to write a small script to track my stocks gain/losses with a certain broker but I'm scared my login-info is sent in plain-text. The following snippet is from the API:

    class Broker: _LOGIN_URL = 'https://trader.broker.nl/login/secure/login' def login(self, username, password): login_payload = { 'username': username, 'password': password, 'isPassCodeReset': False, 'isRedirectToMobile': False } login_response = self.__request(Broker.__LOGIN_URL, None, login_payload, request_type=Broker.__POST_REQUEST, error_message='Could not login.')

    I know that when you use a browser to connect to an HTTPS website a secure connection is established and no-one can sniff the data sent over the connection. Does this also happen when I call 'login()' from a script?

    (I wanted to check myself but I'm not sure if web requests are made from a certain port similarly to how received web data goes through port 80 so I don't know what to sniff)

    Auth0 after refreshing the page I lose the ability to retrieve user information

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:32 AM PST

    There is no Auth0 subreditt and I thought this was the most suitable one. I hope not to post a OT question.

    At first my webapp looses login after refresh, then I read some topics on how to set up social logins and I solved.But now I have a different problem. Here is some code to explain better:

    const { user } = useAuth0(); const sub = user.sub;

    If I refresh I get: "TypeError: Cannot read property 'sub' of undefined"However, the user is still logged, in fact if I go back and then forward using the browser arrows, the page reloads without errors.If I load login/signup page url, the "logout" button appears as the user is still logged.I realized that maybe it's not clear. If the user is not logged, the button displays "login", if user is logged it displays "logout".

    EDIT: From other tests I have done I have noticed this. If I refresh a component (use React.js) that retrieve user info like: user.name, user.sub ecc… I get error; but if I load a different component first and then the one using user. then it works.

    Concrete example: The UserInfo.js component crashes after the refresh, but if I first access the Dashboard.js component and then click on UserInfo through the sidebar then it works and load it without any error.

    How can I avoid this error? And above all why does it occur if the user apparently has not logged out?

    Professional domain name: what is best practice?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:21 AM PST

    I'm putting together a portfolio of my work, and am going to buy a domain for it too, but I'm not sure what's best practice with this kind of thing, so would love some help!

    I'm a designer (do mostly web and print graphics, and web design) and have recently started programming in JS and React. I would think of myself as a designer and developer, and so want a web address that reflects that.

    What's the standard domain suffix to use in this situation? .Dev is cool, but doesn't necessarily show that I design, too (and want to continue to advertise these services).

    Any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance!

    The Chromium Chronicle: Restricting Target Visibility

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 11:21 AM PST

    So... Is there any way to use a drawing from Google Suite in a webpage?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 02:45 PM PST

    I'm trying to use a Chromebook to design a webpage.

    The hitch that I am running into is... the Chromebook.

    I can't see to figure out how to <img src> a pic file from Google Suite.

    I can't transfer the pic to Imgur.

    I understand I'm designing in hard mode, but this is the option I need to use.
