What have you been working on recently? [September 26, 2020]

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 09:04 AM PDT

What have you been working on recently? Feel free to share updates on projects you're working on, brag about any major milestones you've hit, grouse about a challenge you've ran into recently... Any sort of "progress report" is fair game!

    A few requests:

    1. If possible, include a link to your source code when sharing a project update. That way, others can learn from your work!

    2. If you've shared something, try commenting on at least one other update -- ask a question, give feedback, compliment something cool... We encourage discussion!

    3. If you don't consider yourself to be a beginner, include about how many years of experience you have.

This thread will remained stickied over the weekend. Link to past threads here.

I'm giving back - here's a free book on Python - keep learning during this pandemic!

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 06:45 PM PDT

I started writing "Slither into Python" a little over a year ago and I have recently completed it. I decided to release it online for free as a thank you to the programming community, in particular the Python community. Since release there has been over 64k readers, and I've received a tonne of really amazing feedback as well as some incredibly important constructive feedback which I have taken and used to improve the content. I know a lot of you out there are learning Python at the moment and I hope this resource can serve you well.

If you have any questions, or feedback for me, then please let me know, my email is on the site!

I know this is a difficult time for many of us but we can use it to our advantage! Many of us have a lot more free time now then we ever had before, so use this time to continue learning and really ramp up your skills!

The Odin Project introduced a full-blown React course

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 12:29 AM PDT

Hey @everyone! You may notice your percentage change in the JS section of TOP, this is because we introduced a full-blown React course in favor of a high level overview of the 3 main frameworks. This is thanks to aronfischer putting in a lot of work to get the meat of the content finished.

This has been a long time coming, and we have decided that focusing on a specific framework is more important than a high level overview of many of them. We believe that understanding the concepts is more important than learning specific pieces and feel you can learn the others with minimal issues after completing the React one. Good luck all! Feel free to give criticism and feedback either here or on GitHub!

Here is a link to the new section: https://theodinproject.com/courses/javascript#react-js

Best online courses to learn advanced C++?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 10:42 PM PDT

I tried googling but most courses were just basic C++ courses. I am looking for a course that goes into advanced features of C++ like polymorphism, multiple inheritance, little known STL tips & tricks, exceptions, multi threading etc.

    Html, CSS, JS

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 02:33 PM PDT

Hey all, A few days ago I was talking to my dad who is a back end dev for a logistics company and told him that I wanted to get some experience in programming and he said he can get me an internship at his job(freight forwarding company) if I learn HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Angular/react (either or both) up to an intermediate level. They gave me a paid program for free called pluralsight to learn. Any guidance or supplements I should learn on the way that will help me be ready? Thanks!

Laid off or affected by the pandemic? I'm running a Free Full Stack Web Development Bootcamp to help folks unlock a career in tech. I would love to have you join!

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 10:50 AM PDT

    Hey, everyone!

Starting Oct. 20th, I will be running a live intensive full stack web development bootcamp covering everything you need to know to go from no technical skills to employable. We'll meet every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30pm EST to 9:30pm EST with office hours on Saturdays from 12pm EST to 3pm EST. The goal is to give folks who have been laid off or affected by the pandemic the tools they need to command a job in software engineering. I'm looking for a group of 100 individuals (#100Devs) and will give priority to those affected by the pandemic and/or under represented in tech. I recently ran a short 5 week bootcamp that was an amazing success. I want to follow it up with a 30 week full stack program to help folx get ready for a career in software engineering.

If you would like to join, please follow the instructions in my blog post here.

    A little about me:

I'm Managing Director of Engineering for Resilient Coders. My job is to get black and brown folks into high paying careers as software engineers. We're pretty damn good at it too. 85% of our graduates, most of whom do not have degrees or prior experience, go on to get full time offers at an average starting salary of $98,000. All free and stipended. No bullshit or funny business. I'm also a Distinguished Faculty Member at General Assembly were I've been helping folks learn to code for the past 8 years. You can see a sampling of my classes taught at Harvard, MIT, and elsewhere here and reviews from my past students here.

    What to expect:

We'll have class two nights a week with the expectation that you come prepared and have done the assigned reading ahead of time. I like to use lecture as a means of exploration and not dictation, but that only works if you come prepared. The first half of class will be exploring new topics and the second half will be lab. During lab, you will tackle what we just covered by building. You'll never just listen to me and then sign off. Myself and TA's will be available throughout the lab. You'll have real time guidance / feedback and a chance to have all your questions answered.

This course is designed to give you the skills you will need to pursue a career as a software engineer, but will only work if you are committed and ready to put in serious work.

    Why am I doing this:

My activism is teaching. I want to help folks affected by the pandemic and those under represented in tech. The bootcamps I run are either very selective or expensive, so I am hoping to help in the best way I know how by offering a full stack course for free.

    Disclaimer:

I like to joke, curse, and have fun. I do the same thing in my classroom. I value learning over nit picky correctness. If any of these things bother you, this course might not be the best fit.

Here are the videos from my most recent live bootcamp: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGiRSHBdWuCgjgmPPz_13xw

These should give you a good idea of my teaching style and what to expect.

Happy to answer any questions here on reddit.

    Peace!

Edit 1 Everything will stream live on Twitch, but those that get accepted to #100Devs will get private channels with priority help, resume / portfolio reviews, private review sessions, interview prep, and much more!

We'll be covering Full stack JS - HTML, CSS, JS, Node, React, MongoDB, and Postgres!

Always backup your development environment and settings. Remember how to setup things.

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 05:49 PM PDT

I am learning programming and I have a lot of frameworks, languages and libraries installed on my computer.

For example: setting up mongodb and mongoose on Windows 10, my VsCode settings etc.

Yesterday I had to format my computer. I installed the OS. What I forgot was to backup and save all the files and settings I had. And I didn't really remember how to setup things. I casually followed the instructor.

Today I spent 5 hours learning how to install things and setup my settings.

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 07:14 AM PDT

As the title says. I found I learn better this way. Looking for something that will give you bad/broken code on purpose and you have to figure it out to fix it.

Edit: No specific language I'm looking for. Just anything.

Manipulating JavaScript on a webpage using Python

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 11:48 PM PDT

I plan to make a module which takes a users text input, feeds it through this page https://lingojam.com/EnglishtoShakespearean, and receives the output. I've looked into the website itself and it does not seem to do anything server side, all done through client side JavaScript. So sending a GET/POST request does not seem possible. I then came across Selenium which lets you manipulate the web page. As for as I know for Selenium, you have to download browser drivers. Do I just include those within the module that I create (separate folder)? Is there an alternative to Selenium which requires no downloads and does not open a window or just simpler in general? Someone told me another way which is to just recreate the script myself after looking at the source code, but I'd rather avoid that method.

How would you guys go about performing this task?

[java] Why does my array stay the same after calling a function to change it?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 11:32 PM PDT

    //assume part of Main function // assume myIntArray is an array of zeroes modifyArray(myIntArray); System.out.println("after modify: myIntArray= " + Arrays.toString(myIntArray)); //arrays reference/memory exercise private static void modifyArray(int[] array){ array[0] = 2; array = new int[] {1,2,3,4,5}; } //Why is myIntArray completely unchanged?

    Why is myIntArray completely unchanged?

Shouldn't the "new int[] {1,2,3,4,5}" modify it?

We take in 'array' as the parameter, and array[0] changes the first element. So shouldn't array = new int[] also "point" it to a new array?

    How to finish my code?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 11:06 PM PDT

I'm a senior computer science major, and I've written hundreds of programs. Big and small, double digit languages, I've been taught it all. The one thing I don't know is how to finish my code. I'll give you my example right now:

I have a basic program to type in an assignment and it puts it on your google calendar (written in python). It has a GUI, it works well and is tested. How do I (at least in python for now) make this into a full package, something I can send to someone and they can double click the file and it turns it into a program that they double click on from their desktop and it opens and functions normally?

In other words, how do I make it so that it's an application that installs itself from a file and makes sure everything python related is up to date and makes a shortcut on the Home Screen? All I have now is .png/.jpg for what everything in the GUI should look like, plus the main .py file. Does anyone have any recommendations for YouTube videos or websites or courses explaining the process?

    Thanks in advance.

Are there any books, resources or advice on making my portfolio projects look very visually striking and professional?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 03:27 PM PDT

I'm not that interested in design and appearances, and I don't believe I have a good eye for it. I'm much more interested in data and algorithms and nuts and bolts of programming, but at the same time I don't want the appearance of my portfolio projects to let me down when it comes to job-hunting time. With that in mind, any tips, or book recommendations, or recommended resources that would help me polish the look of my projects? Apart from HTML, CSS, bootstrap and Sass, are there any other recommended languages, tools or frameworks I should know for visual stuff?

    TIA

How much Back End knowledge must a Front End Dev have?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 09:21 PM PDT

Is a developer with good knowledge of Front end but extremely little knowledge of Back End acceptable/ hireable?

Is there a minimum essential backend knowledge? Can you know absolutely nothing about the backend being frontend, and still get a job?

I know that over time it's inevitable to understand a little of what happens in the backend if you are already working and are curious, but can you start at zero backend knowledge?

can someone help me with this

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 08:58 PM PDT

A piece of equipment, such as a computer, loses value over time. The amount of this lost value is called depreciation. The simplest way to determine depreciation is by the straight-line method. If the asset has a useful life of n years, the straight-line method of depreciation assumes a depreciation of 1/n of the item's value each year. Assume a particular $3,000 computer has a useful life of five years. At the end of the five years, assume it has a scrap value of $500. Thus, the net cost of the computer is 3000 500 = $2500. Using the straight-line method, the computer depreciates $500 (= 2500 x 1/5) each of the five years of Its useful life. After two years, the computer depreciates $1,000. Thus, the book value of the computer after two years (the difference between the cost of the item and the depreciation to date) is $2,000 (= 30001000 Write a program that calculates the

depreciation of an asset using the straight line method. The program should ask the user for the initial cost of the item, the scrap value of the item, and the item's useful life in years. Use a function Depreciation that calculates and displays a table that shows the book value of the item after each year of its useful life. The function should have three arguments the Initial cost, the scrap value, and the life of the item. The function should not return a value.

    [Scheme] Binary to numerical

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 04:41 PM PDT

Hi everyone!, I am kind of stuck in a basic problem: I am reading (self-studying) the book Simply scheme (Harvey-Wright), going right now on chapter 15. The problem comes from an example called from-binary, where basically given a binary number we want the numerical value that it represents. Of course I did it in the obvious way, which is how they show how to solve it:

(define (from-binary bits) (if (empty? bits) 0 (+ (* (first bits) (expt 2 (count (bf bits)))) (from-binary(bf bits)))))

The problem comes when they show a different way to solve the problem, one where the extra calculation of expt can be avoided:

(define (from-binary bits) (if (empty? bits) 0 (+ (* (from-binary (bl bits)) 2) (last bits))))

I don't understand how it works, i tried to trace it but it only returns the final result with no intermediate steps. I also tried to modify it so it might show what is happening:

(define (from-binary bits) (if (empty? bits) 0 (se (* (from-binary (bl bits)) 2) (last bits))))

But no luck... Can you help me? It's obvious that I am missing something simple but I can't see what.

    Non-Blacking input ncurses

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 08:24 PM PDT

I've seen many people ask a question like this, but they all seem to mean something different than what I do so I'll define what I mean by blocking:

When I hold a key on my keyboard, I want to be able to hold another, and have its input override the previous one, but when you let go of this new said key, I want the input of the other key that I was holding before to come back.

With that said I'll now explain my problem: I'm currently Programming a rogue-like in C using the ncurses library. My issue is that I cannot figure out how to get non-blocking (see above definition) input. My current method of getting input is a while loop with a switch statement that detects input using the getch() function provided by curses. Anyone got any tips, should I be taking input completely differently? I don't know how to use threads as I'm new but I'm willing to learn if it will work and run better. I'll attach a gitlab link with the code for my controls.

Controls The actual loop in question is around line 38

This isn't too urgent, I appreciate any advice and if there's anything else that I should include let me know.

What would be the right way to do this querry?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 07:55 PM PDT

Hi, ive been doing some MySQL homework and i need to get an average of discounts by product and the min and max discount. Ive tried this:

    select COD_PROD, AVG(DESCONTO) as MEDIA , MAX(MEDIA) as MAIOR, MIN(MEDIA) as MENOR from NotaFiscal group by COD_PROD;

But the code does not recognize the "MEDIA" name i gave the avg (my teacher says it should) and so i tried:

    select COD_PROD, AVG(DESCONTO) as MEDIA , MAX(AVG(DESCONTO)) as MAIOR, MIN(AVG(DESCONTO)) as MENOR from NotaFiscal group by COD_PROD;

And it is giving me a "Invalid use of group function" wich the only solution i found is change where to having, but i am not using where.

What am i doing wrong? Can't I use the names in the "as" and can't I put an AVG inside a MAX/MIN? How would be the right way to do this?
