Can I do a code review for you? Posted: 20 Sep 2020 10:12 AM PDT Hey! I do a lot of code reviews in my day job (dev of 10 years) and I noticed that many juniors and solo developers would benefit from bouncing their code with a more experienced developer. So here's what I have in mind: I can do a code review of your public web dev project (preferably Javascript/Typescript, but I do fairly well with anything you throw at me) as a Youtube video, no strings attached. Let me know what you think! [link] [comments]

UX/UI jargon, is this the buzzword for front end developer these days? Posted: 20 Sep 2020 03:07 PM PDT Newbie here trying to figure out my path. Given that I understand UX/UI to deal with all things "user experience related", are most boot camps and jobs using this label to say that they are offering/requiring knowledge related to front end design? (HTML, CSS, JAVA, anything else?) Will I have exposure to most things on the front end side? This seems like a good fit for me, especially since I already enjoy all things related to my graphics degree. Thanks in advance, sorry for the repeat question. [link] [comments]
industry standard ways for hosting a scalable django app on AWS? Posted: 20 Sep 2020 12:43 PM PDT what are some common ways or industry standards for hosting scalable backends on AWS? im comfortable and have experience with EC2 but im learning a bit about lightsail and load balancers that seem to be better suited for having scalability out of the box. im really comfortable hosting frontends with S3 + cloudfront but trying to understand what are some of the best ways to go about hosting the backend. thanks! Questions regarding Frontend-focused Software Engineer Interview Posted: 20 Sep 2020 12:24 PM PDT For those who have experienced interviews for a frontend-focused SWE role, do they usually test pure JavaScript knowledge without any frameworks? I know the team that I am interviewing for uses React, but I wonder if I should focus more on JavaScript knowledge and building something using Vanilla JS without using any frameworks or library (build a navbar, modal, graph, etc. using pure JS)? Any thoughts? [link] [comments]

How to Create a Map with Private Data? Posted: 20 Sep 2020 03:30 PM PDT New to the game here, and trying to create a concept similar to the maps seen on HikingProject or AllTrails. From what I can find, both of these are using private/internal data projected onto a map. How does that concept work? What is happening on the backend, and what would be examples of the software that allows them to build a database of their own (vs. publicly publishing this data to Google Maps or OpenSteetMap?) Hopefully I'm making sense. Thanks for fueling my curiosity. [link] [comments]
Question from a complete beginner. Posted: 20 Sep 2020 07:45 AM PDT Hello! I currently am taking a course and I've went over very basic HTML and CSS, and am now learning Bootstrap. From what I can tell, Bootstrap seems to have a lot of pre-built things that would seem to be very helpful building websites (at least what the user sees). With how easy it is to just grab code and use it, would this mean that bootstrap is very commonly used as a template for most websites? Or are they just using bootstrap as a template in the course only because it's for beginners? I was just curious how common it is to use bootstrap as a template in the professional world. Posted: 20 Sep 2020 08:33 AM PDT For example, if I need to start a React app with some nodeJS back-end, it'd be awesome if there's a directory pointing me to a boilerplate app using modern features and principles. Then there could maybe be another entry for an Angular app, etc [link] [comments]
How to write a privacy policy when you use something like AWS Cognito? Posted: 20 Sep 2020 02:03 PM PDT I'm launching a web app that has user login/auth using AWS cognito. My site actually doesn't even have a database, all user information is stored on cognito, and I just authenticate my backend routes with the token users get from cognito. Does this change how I write the privacy policy for my site? Am I still technically collecting user information if it's stored with amazon? What about if I have users pay for my site's services through PayPal? I store order ids and the transaction date, but my site never even sees any credit card or other payment information. What should this part of my policy look like? [link] [comments]

Need advice for my new type of post system (web and app developers) Posted: 20 Sep 2020 01:51 PM PDT I need some advice for the best way to tackle an interesting problem. I'm creating a platform where users can create a variety of post types meaning there's a variety of post editors with a variety of post outputs. Another key aspect of it is that I want to let 3rd party developers develop their post types. In order to solve this problem, I decided to use iframes, the iframe gets data through messages from the main host and that's it. To prevent XSS I just force everyone to wait for my personal approval to have their post type accessible in the post type collection. Any ideas? here's some tutorials I've made for 3rd party developers on the platform: [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Sep 2020 10:02 PM PDT Hi Reddit, So quick backstory, my mom works at a local barbershop and the owner asked her to pay money so he can hire a web developer to create a booking website for their local shop. He wanted to split the cost of building the appointment site with the workers since the workers will benefit from it and he did not have enough money ( I know, the owner should front the cost instead of splitting it with his workers. It is definitely really shady and she did not tell me when this all happened and now its been a year but this situation is a whole nother problem). I was curious about how his website end turning out in hopes of getting an idea of a new project, and I was looking through their bookings and did not see my moms name on appointment site. So I went back to her and confirmed that she did pay, and she said yes, and showed her that her name was not on the appointment site at all. I really felt that the owner was taking advantage of my mom since shes old and does not understand technology well. Long story short, to hell with all of that. I want to build her her own appointment site, but I am not sure what are good tools / github package I can use to do the appointment booking. Since I am new to web dev and still learning I wanted to turn to you guys for advice. A lot of questions pop up in my head that I have zero clue how to solve or what to look for to head in the right direction. Like is the a library to do the bookings? After the booking is placed is the timeslot going to be grayed out so no other users can book that time slot? What if the customer cancels their appointment, how will the grayed time slot open back up for booking? What service do I need to use so the user receives a confirmation text message. Any advice that would point me in the right direction in building this app would be a great help! Thanks for reading. [link] [comments]
How to create a page with sortable entries? Posted: 20 Sep 2020 12:42 PM PDT Howdy, I'm a webdev newbie and only use Dreamweaver with limited coding exp. I would like to list some of my paintings on a webpage. On top, I would like to have the ability for visitors to sort by "Year" "Theme" "Medium". When they click on these, the entries below will automatically be rearranged. Any insight is appreciated! Many thanks! :) [link] [comments]
Questions about building websites for people Posted: 20 Sep 2020 08:06 AM PDT I'm a newer developer who knows React, Redux, Javascript, Ruby on Rails and NodeJS. I've built my own profile site and project apps. I've deployed to Heroku and Netify but nothing like GoDaddy or more bare bones hosting site. Here are my questions: 1) Regarding getting a domain, what should I ask/tell the person I'm building a site for? 2) Assuming it's a simple profile site, maintenance will be minimal but wondering if I should use a CMS like Conentful or Wordpress? Posted: 20 Sep 2020 08:04 AM PDT I handle my dad's website through my laptop. It was made in PHP which requires XAMPP t run. Some things are run locally and then uploaded on a live website using FileZilla. Everything is handled through my computer because I help manage the website most of the time. The website was not made by me, I'm just a beginner. It was made by a professional. Whenever I try to open localhost/phpmyadmin, it gives me access denied error, even if my dad's website opens on localhost. I want to open it because I want to learn WordPress which requires making a database trough there to install WordPress. Since I'm getting access denied error, I thought I should install WAMP and don't do anything with XAMPP. I don't want to make any changes to XAMPP myself because I'm not that tech-savvy to these things properly. That's why I was thinking about using WAMP intead. [link] [comments]
Is a Flat File CMS still a good idea for a new brochue type website? Posted: 20 Sep 2020 11:38 AM PDT I'm creating a multilingual brochure type website with 10(ish) pages of content, a portfolio and possiblly later on blog. I used Grav CMS a couple of years ago and for me the learning curve was fairly steep but once I got into it I found it really nice to be SQL free and it was pretty easy to deploy since it was just files. Now it feels like the flat file cms has kinda died off, many of projects I looked at seemed fairly dead. Is something like Grav or Kirby still a good idea? Where have these users moved onto?
