What do you do when you feel like giving up? Posted: 12 Sep 2020 10:48 AM PDT I've found myself opening up Unity Hub and then closing it back down after the thoughts of "I don't have enough time" or "why does it even matter, it's never going to be good enough." I watch as my project I've sent so much time on "here and there" over the past few years build up days, weeks, and now months of "last opened" next to it. Does it even make sense to pour what little free time I have left at the end of a 40+ work week and take that time away from my family just to spend time hunched over my laptop to fulfill a pipe dream. Does this happen to you? What do you do to pull yourself out of a funk? Do I just wait until I retire in 30 years to finally have enough time? [link] [comments]

I want to move away from Unity but don't know where? Posted: 12 Sep 2020 08:28 AM PDT Hi, i'm using Unity for 4 years now. I know how to make games on it, but I don't want to continue on it. Unity has some minors problems for me and I would like to have a more flexible workspace to make games. I like making 2D games so I think Unity is not the best way of doing them. I don't know as a single developer if I can make games without game engines. I watched couple of devlogs and the games that don't use game engines look very intense. What is the best way to make my games without engines? I heard C++ is used in industry very often but I am not sure as I didn't get involved in the professional side of things. What would be the most logical decision to make? Thanks! [link] [comments]

I cant stop thinking about this game Posted: 12 Sep 2020 11:28 AM PDT I had an idea for a game: the pepole of the vilege wanted the legendery wepon from the top of the mountain the Magnifying Blade (Magnifying Glass sword) no one could climb up the tall mountain other then the chosen one. The chosen one had to climb up the tall mountain on his own and he did it but when the chosen one came back down he died Immediately and the village filled with darkness and evil. This happend 100 years ago and you are the current chosen one you need to take the Magnifying Blade back to the mountain and make the light come back and the monsters to disappear. The game will be a metroidvenia in the art style of hollow knight. I still couldnt imagine how the characters going to look like [link] [comments]

Looking for a team for a multiplayer horror game. Posted: 12 Sep 2020 09:52 AM PDT Me and another decent coder are looking to put together a team for coding sense I have little to no coding experience and would like to direct the game. There would be 2 teams, A killer and up to 6 humans. The human team would be inside a big house where they would have time to find stuff around the house to blockade doors, windows, etc. They could build alarms, traps, weapons with stuff they find. Their whole goal is to wait for the police to arrive while trying to slow the killer down from getting inside the huge house. The killer would have different abilities and weaknesses dependent on which one you play, the killer would be able to break down doors, climb walls outside the house into windows, crawl through vents, maybe other ways to? The killer would have something i'll call an "exposure meter" this exposure meter will slowly go up when you are inside the house, when it goes all the way down you would teleport back outside with a cooldown on your respawn. Getting shot or hit by a survivor could slightly effect the exposure meter kinda like a health bar but would do very little to stop them. There could be a brute killer that can smash through walls if he's gets impatience from being outside for to long, or a killer that is "blind" which can't physically see humans unless he hits them, they will be visible for a limited time, but he would also be able to hear extremely well and do a lot more damage. If your interested in making a game like this contact me with any questions you may have over reddit, from there I can give you my discord so we can talk further :) [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Sep 2020 09:44 AM PDT Hello, my nickname Amfich, I'm 17 and I create games, I want to share my game with you. In a row, this is already the 5th game that I made myself, as well as 1 game where I do not use my graphics (do not beat for this :)). Okay, let's move on to the description of the game itself: Welcome to the game Be a Pirate! What should I do? Take all the gold from the pirates that are in the room for a certain time and escape through the second door! Steal gold, complete quests, solve riddles, but watch the time as it is limited Also, do not forget about the insidious pirates and monsters as they are watching you. 1) Game link - https://www.kartridge.com/games/Amfich/be-a-pirate [link] [comments]
I am thinking of starting an inspirational blog for game developers what do you think? Posted: 12 Sep 2020 09:10 AM PDT Hi everyone, So here is the deal, I have been working on this idea of mine while trying to land a gig for a few months now, but as we all know, game dev isn't easy and motivation slinks into dark places after a while -- specially if you're working alone. This made me shuffle around looking for things to inspire me -- renew my motivation and vigor. Now inspiration can come from many different places and in many different shapes or forms. One form that works for me is when I see other people succeeding and doing what I'd like to do or am doing right now but having a hard time with. Now you'll say, well, we have LOTS of interviews, articles, talks, etc... about successful game devs. Just google [insert some hit game here that made a bazillion Dollars]. Honestly, I agree. 100%. But the issue here is, that success is a goose's golden egg. Your game is most likely not going to be a hit. In fact, it is most likely (at least odds wise) going to be a failure and that is VERY demotivating. So I thought, perhaps, we are going about this the wrong way. Why are we chasing wild success that have like 1% chance of happening if not less? In fact, that is very demotivating; you have only 1% chance to make a hit game (it is actually less) and these are almost all of the stories we have. Why aren't we looking at something more realistic? Something more attainable? People like Jake Birkett or Jeff Vogel? People with success that most us can replicate realistically? But let me go a step further... what about people who are successful (they make a living out of games) but are not from the US or western Europe where the game industry is a huge presence and governments throwing grants left and right at people there? What about people from 3rd world countries? Africa and South America? What about Easter Europe or people from Asia? People that don't have a game industry presence. That can't just move a country whenever they want to. I come from a 3rd world country, we basically don't have a gaming industry presence here and the government controls what little presence there is and keeps it under a tight noose. I had to claw my way up to the smidge of success I have (barely able to sustain myself as a game developer) and every success comes with LOTS of hard work, battles and what not. I felt that I'd love to hear about these people that no one knows about? Those people that I wished I had when I was growing up to look up to and inspire me, make me feel that I CAN do this. That I success in this field under the conditions I had (and still have) is not a simple fluke. It can be done and there are many ways to it and here are examples. I guess what I am saying is, what do you guys think of such an inspirational website/blog? Every week, a post from a successful developer, someone that isn't your typical USA developer or Western EU developer. Someone that figured their way into the industry and can offer insights to those that are less fortunate? Yet, this doesn't mean that I won't go through and interview and catalog some of the success made from developers in those places (USA, EU, etc...) on the contrary, but the priority/focus won't be to these since there are many such examples and stories floating around the internet anyway. So what do you think? Would you read something like this? Do you think you'd find something like this motivational and helpful to you? Thanks. [link] [comments]
