    Our designers only design for desktop

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 10:00 AM PDT

    I've been with this company for about a year and a half now. When I was teaching myself web dev, one of the first things I learned was mobile first approach.

    At my job, the designers only mock up a desktop version of the site in XD. For tablet and mobile, it's expected that I just "make it work." This can be really frustrating as the design sometimes just will not fit on smaller devices or it's impractical to do so.

    Should I urge my employer to add mobile and tablet design to the design phase? The main reason he doesn't is cost. But at the same time, I'm not a designer, and often times me "making it work" ends up needing additional revisions because I just don't have an eye for design, I am simply trying to fit everything.

    Spent a few hours and built a Trivia Game

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 12:54 PM PDT

    I've been coding for around 8 months, and this is the first "big" project I did in such a short time.

    This project uses the Jservice API.

    Here it is.

    I'm going to add an attempt system later, as well a category option and a point system. But, do you think that this could be a decent project for a junior front end dev portfolio?

    How do you make a JavaScript framework?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 06:48 AM PDT

    Hi everyone.

    A week ago I started thinking about this after seeing what Google and YouTube uses for front-end frameworks.

    I did some research but I am not satisfied with what I found.

    Do anyone know how do they make Vue.js or React.js?

    If I owned a big company and wanted to make one, where would I start, what would I do?

    Anybody here consider themselves expert at CSS before trying Tailwind and enjoyed it?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 11:01 AM PDT

    I picked up Tailwind UI for a few projects it has been requested by clients on and has been a rollercoaster.

    First I was against it. Then did some courses I was kinda sold on it for quickly getting pages together. Quickly building templates was great with Tailwind UI. Now the final customisations are reallllly dragging I feel like I'm going 10x slower than I could with SCSS even after beginning to pick up much of the syntax.

    I am beginning to wonder if a lot of the praise comes from people that do not consider themselves good at writing vanilla CSS? I have been writing it for 10+ years.

    I want to create an e-commerce website, is using Magento as backend and Angular as front is a good idea?

    Is that a good combination? If not what's better.

    Curiosity question: Why when I try to "revive" an idle FTP connection to a site does it take forever to re-connect while if a initiate a new connection "from scratch" it connects instantly?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 01:16 PM PDT

    The title pretty much sums it up. When have site open in FileZilla ignored for a while, then attempt to open a folder it takes forever for it to reconnect. It's almost always much faster to re-start the connection anew and navigate back to where I need to be.

    How can I make some little zone clickable of my screen?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 12:32 PM PDT

    Hi!

    My client want a screen where the user can click on a little dot on the screen and be sent to another page in my React app.

    So, how can I add these little dots on my image/page, when the user click on a dot they are redirected to another page. The dots must always be at the same place. When the user is on mobile, there will be another screen, no need to handle this case then.

    Here is the desired result: https://imgur.com/a/ywEpAKA

    Thanks!

    Intro to Web Components Part I

    Could you give some feedback on my app and landing page?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 03:06 PM PDT

    Hi!

    I've just deployed my new game Singalingding on https://singalingding.com.

    It's a simple card game where two teams compete, targeted as a family game / party game. The goal is to remember the lyrics of the songs, and sing the right lyrics :)

    I'd really appreciate any feedback on how I can make the landing page pop a bit more, and the styling on the actual app as well (I'm currently working on porting to IOS and Android apps using Ionic).

    Thank you very much for taking the time to give feedback. I appreciate it very much!

    The problem here is that they are ordered from youngest on the left to oldest on the right, and I want them to be in the opposite order.

    Can someone take a look at it and tell me how to do it?

    [Looking to Hire] I'm looking to invest in building a website for a service but I believe it's complicated and I don't know how to articulate in industry jargon what I would like

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 02:42 AM PDT

    Context: Online service--not a physical one--(so, web heavy) that requires what I would think is a fairly advanced design.

    Given that, what is the best way to communicate to potential designers and developers what I would like?

    I was thinking a mixture of descriptions and explanations + mocks drafted in an image editor demonstrating what I have in mind and also examples from around the web ("Like this, with this function" etc.). I can draft mocks in art software in a jiffy and point to clear examples with no problem.

    It is complicated so I understand it probably will cost $10k+. Because I understand I will be spending a lot of money I would like to know what I'm requesting and what ballpark the investment will require and I know very little about web dev and since this will primarily be an online business, I figure I should learn what I'm talking about.

    Thank you in advance

    c# over Python? Which language would be more secure in the future for job placement and maturity of available applications for the respective languages?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 12:28 PM PDT

    Hey guys!

    Here I am asking a super noobie question, but it's something I'm facing today. I have a choice to dive deep into Python or C# for my server language.

    My question is which language future proof me if I began a mastery in either one? Super vague question, I know, but I just wanted to kind of gauge what web developers are using in this subreddit.

    Here's one thing I'm struggling to understand. There was somebody who posted recently in the C# thread that C# and Java are almost exclusively what you'll find on enterprise level software vs Python where you won't find a lot of that in very mature codebases.

    How true is that?

    Wrapping form elements within a paragraph tag?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 12:12 PM PDT

    While going over the "How to structure a web form" section in MDN's form series, it states that it's common practice to wrap checkboxes and radio buttons within a <li> element of either a <ol>, or <ul>. That makes sense. What I don't get is wrapping labels and their associated widgets/elements within a <div> or <p>, which I see the latter a lot more.

    I've done it because:

    1. I've been told to do so (without explination)
    2. I can display: flex; flex-direction the <p> tag

    I know Flexbox didn't existed before this was considered common practice, so what is the real reason for wrapping these form elements within paragraphs exist?

    Looking for pointers on how to get started with website/app integration

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 04:29 AM PDT

    I'm a front-end web developer, very much comfortable in making WordPress and other responsive websites and relying on plugins etc. to include added functionality to my client's websites.

    Recently, I started working with a client on a charitable well-being website, which has the aim of eventually becoming a community-based platform where members can keep track of their daily activities & goals (e.g physical activity, productivity). The idea is to either link the website with an app/health tracking software which already does this, or ideally, bring in someone to develop a custom app, similar to e.g ATracker.

    I'd like to involve myself in facilitating integration of the app with the website, so that either side can communicate by inputting the user's activity and have it viewable. This is both to develop my own skills, and as the client has expressed flexibility in allowing me to learn and keep the team small, as this is a more long term goal.

    I am aware that this will involve building an API hosted on a server to enable the data to be saved and sourced, however as this is very much new to me I would appreciate any pointers in how to start learning this and what the best approach would be. Is there any way of making use of existing toolkits and plugins, e.g Flutter & REST API, to jump-start making an attractive application which can easily integrate with the existing (wordpress-based) website?

    What should I expect in a 3 hour web dev interview

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 11:33 AM PDT

    This would be my first programming job and I don't know what to expect in this interview. I've had other interviews where there are multiple stages, but the longest one I ever had was one hour. I'm extremely nervous about it and was hoping to get some advice on what to prep myself on.

    Nginx serving content from the wrong site in DO droplet

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 11:26 AM PDT

    I have 3 sites on one DO droplet, all being served by nginx. The first two sites I added are working as intended, the third site that I just added, however, is directing to the original one (the first one added to the droplet which is not set as default_server if that's important).

    I've triple checked that the proper /etc/nginx/sites_available file is linked to the right sites_enabled directory.

    I directly copied the 2nd site's sites_enabled file for the new site with only the domain names changed, and I've triple checked for typos and everything:

    server {

    listen 80;

    listen [::]:80;

    root /var/www/example.com/html;

    index index.html index.htm index.nginx-debian.html;

    server_name example.com www.example.com;

    location / {

    try_files $uri $uri/ =404;

    }

    }

    The DNS is properly directed, and the A records are created for both www and non www addresses.

    I'm completely at a loss here for what I'm missing, any help or speculation is appreciated!
