Want to get into competitive programming, just don't know where to start and the best resources.

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 09:41 PM PDT

So I badly want to get into this realm of competitive programming and I know what I am setting myself up for. Problem is, I just don't know where to start....especially in the math sector. Now I say math because, a person can not understand "x,y,z" in math if they don't know algebra...a person can not understand sin, cos, tan, if they don't know trigonometry. Same for me, every time I see a math problem in cp, I'm like....what does this even mean..I'm an eighth grader and know algebra and learning trigonometry....but I just want to know a few more "math" topics beforehand so that I don't get dumbfounded when I see those maths in cp and atleast interpret how the math can be solved....pls help a brother out <3

How the software engineering process is organized in your big company?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 02:08 AM PDT

    Hi there,

I'm wondering how a whole workflow looks like from a developer perspective.

Are you using a tools to ensure code consistency across the whole company?

In case if you have company code related guidelines do you follow them?

How easy it is to agree upon the usage of a new lib/framework/language/etc. and what it takes to push it?

Do you feel motivated? If so, what company does to keep you motivated?

Trying to look for "advanced" programming courses for free.

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 09:48 PM PDT

Title is pretty self explanatory, parents will not pay for any udemy course or anything like that, so I need to learn about "advanced" programming courses. By advanced I mean this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUQZ1qmKlLY in this tutorial the guy teaches you about advanced c++ syntaxes and commands which I have not found in freecodecamp's c++ tut. So I just want help from you guys to find me something very similar to this but for python,c# and java. For competitive programming, a 'basic' tutorial will not help me so I need an advanced tutorial which can actually teach me the advanced cmds of the languages python, c# and java...please help a brother out...and btw it needs to be free as you know from earlier....so yea pls help me :).

In C, how could you take an input of a character and if someone enters more than one newLine in a row it would only print one newLine?

My idea was to create a counter that counts the instances but for some reason I cannot get it right. If someone could look over this code and give me any suggestions I would appreciate it. I feel like there is something wrong with the way in which I am using the counter. https://pastebin.com/dDgfDtUq

python -m pytest ./tests/ VS pytest ./tests/? The first gives errors, the second doesn't

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 03:38 PM PDT

    When I run

    `python -m pytest ./tests/`

I get several errors, for example: ImportError: cannot import name '_helpers' from 'google.auth'

Without making any other changes, all tets pass if I run

    `pytest ./tests/`

Which approach is correct and why is there a difference? I'm running python 3.7.5

    Thanks

How important is it for final year engineering project to be in the same field as what you want to land a job in ?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 09:35 AM PDT

I'm interested in web development but since we are 6 in a group it was hard coming up with a difficult enough project with just a MERN stack. So one of the mentors decided to help us out, however the idea that he is pitching us falls in ML and involves clustering.

It's also an amazing project, like the professor is a genius and he wants us to work on an algorithm he designed. Honestly I don't mind, I don't even know if we are smart enough but he has agreed to teach us whatever is required to learn. The first 6 months will not require any coding but maths and more maths for a better algorithm. I've worked with Tensorflow once and kinda liked it, but never thought of it as a career.

So what should I do. I don't want to be selfish and divert the full group to do something I want obviously. And I'm myself intrested in this project and it'll shine on my resume. But at the same time it will mean I have to stop studying whatever I was doing all this while like JavaScript and React. And I feel like it'll look odd when I go looking for jobs in web development to have a ML project.

    Problem sending http header

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 10:36 AM PDT

Hello. This is a question pertaining to a website utilizing the usage of HTML, Python3, CGI, and SQLite3.

I have an html page consisting of a form with some inputs and a submit button.

This form action calls upon a python script which with cgi obtains values from the above form utilizing POST.

When this action happens the Content-type defaults to 'application/x-www-form-urlencoded'. This is fine, however because the HTTP header is being printed out before I have any control over the contents, it seems that I am unable to store my session cookie within the HTTP header.

Past attempts have included using os.environ to manually change this but this throws a TypeError when obtaining FieldStorage using cgi.

Thank you very much in advance. I can supply any more necessary information -- I tried to keep my post as short as possible.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I'm trying to make an app with stock market data, possibly using json.

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 05:35 PM PDT

    Hi reddit,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I'm trying to make an app with stock market data using json.

I have made iPhone apps before that are currently in the app store, but nothing too complicated.

Basically I want to create an app that shows the top 5 stock gainers for the current time/day.

For example if TSLA was the top growing stock for the day it would display:

    TSLA, % Change: +101.34%

As pitiful as it sounds im basically asking how I would go about doing this and from what API I should get the data. Should I use Json? Etc.

    Thank you for your time

Tools for modern .NET web development

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 10:29 AM PDT

I haven't done any significant web development for like 10 years. Most of it involved simple ASP.NET MVC pages and a little jQuery.

I want to build a website that shows off a portfolio of my work and a blog. Part of this is to give myself a web presence, but also to get back up to speed on modern web dev technologies.

A lot changed since then. Bootstrap, stylesheet preprocessors, like 10 versions of Angular, Vue, React, Redux, TypeScript, whatever Webpack is. I don't know what NodeJS. I've just heard of Blazor. I've never used to the CANVAS element.

There is too much. And I've learned recently that some popular JS frameworks like MomentJS and RequireJS are obsolete.

It's really hard for me to keep up with front-end technologies. Would anyone mind giving me a rundown of relevant technologies to learn for modern web development with C#?

Best programming language for image processing?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 09:38 AM PDT

Is Python the best or is there another language that is better suited to image processing and creating GUIs?

Advice or recommended resources for having all pages on a site route through index.php?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 03:12 PM PDT

I was reading a handful of stack overflow posts about all sorts of php organizational things. A lot of people on various posts recommended using index.php for all page requests with a query string for the actual page you want to display as a way of simplifying the various packages/css/includes/etc as well as standardizing page headers and footers that would be on every page anyways.

This is starting to seem like something that would be useful in the application I'm working on as the number of pages and dependencies used increases and as I'm starting to think about how to go about redirecting every page to some temp page during server maintenance (way easier with one point of entry that can be closed). But I am not entirely sure what the best way to go about this would be. My intuition is to just do the query string thing and then use a switch in index.php to read the query and include the body for that page which would be written in a separate file. I assume this would make it so that the included file would have access to everything already included in the index.php file both on the php side and the html side (like scripts).

Mainly, I am looking for some resources to read about this paradigm or some alternative suggestions. For now I am trying to avoid adding any new dependencies so I don't just want some templating engine recommendation or anything like that.

Javascript: decisions about frontend and backend use for web apps

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 02:39 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm studying full-stack development and a question has been popping into my head lately, now that I've entered the backend with node.js:

How to make a decision based on whether Javascript should go into frontend or backend for a particular case?

I mean, I know that the frontend regards to what the user interacts with and the backend is the server-side part of it, but since Javascript can be used in both sometimes I feel a little confused. Let's take a simple example: a calculator of any sort. I know I can build a calculator web app either exclusively on frontend or in backend, but in situations like that how do I make the decision? It's only with time and experience that I'll know if something should go into one or another? Are there some guidelines to take into consideration that I can use to determine what to do in these somewhat ambiguous situations?

I'm a keen, pretty chill guy.. Won't be super serious just someone that can give me direction so I'm not wasting so much time.

If there's anyone out there i would appreciate it!

    Any good resources for SQL?

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 01:47 PM PDT

SQL has always been confusing to me. In OOP languages everything seems intuitive to me (now anyway, now when I was getting started) but SQL seems all over the place and unclear. I feel like I'm memorizing key words instead of learning the language. I think the rather forgiving syntax makes me feel like it is a less logical language than it really is.

Any suggestions on resources? What helped you? I know there is a definite logic to it but I just can't figure it out. What were you "Ah ha!" moments? For example, when I finally got my mind around objects in OOP, everything else just seemed to make sense. Any similar situations with SQL for you? What helped you understand SQL better?

Tech companies are selfish and being a hypocrite. We should stand together and demand them to open source

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 08:34 PM PDT

We're living in the year 2020 and open source has been the go to when it comes to sharing information with Humanity. We're all here to learn and to improve on software without any additional costs. Why aren't tech companies doing this? We should demand Amazon to release their full source code, OpenAI to release all their source code including GPT-3, TikTok to share all their source code and Facebook to release their full source code on Github so that we can learn and spot security flaws. Please upvote as a way to sign this petition and together we can make this world a better place. Information should be free without any additional costs. Keeping source code a secret should be a crime as you're being selfish for not sharing your knowledge with the world

I have an awesome idea I want to code, but it’s a large project and outside of my comfort zone, need advice/help (long post)

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 03:02 AM PDT

(TL;DR) Have a idea, not a lot of coding experience. Need help/advice on how to setup a database, do API calls, host the code, and/or have a login system.

I have a really cool idea I want to code and I've been messing around with it for a while, making a little progress here and there but mostly just learning as I'm going, nothing that useful yet. I'm at the point where I want to start combining things but I have no idea how to go about it, what language to use, programs, sources, etc.... and that's where I need help. I've tried looking things up online but I can't find anything useful or helpful. I have a basic understanding of how to code in most languages but not a lot, mostly math and computational stuff.

To start, I need to have a database set up to store information that is in the "cloud" and can be easily accessed when needed. I got a basic one setup in Google cloud and I can use it from a terminal but I have no idea how to access it from the code, I tried JS and Python but I'm not really sure what I'm doing there. I know Redis is a thing I've heard is pretty good but that's the extent I know on that. Any advice on that would be great, even just where to look for helpful information.

Separately from the code I need to be able to access outside API's to send user info and then get stats back. I have absolutely no idea how to do this. I found a YouTube video that let me code something in JS that works but I have no idea what's happening with it or why it works so I could do it again.

Once those 2 things are working I need a way for users to login and secure their information. The security for this isn't as important right now, it's more just a way for users to see their own info rather than someone else's. Everything this program is doing is all public information anyway. I've seen some things like Orange? I think that lets you login with Oauth through almost any company which would be awesome if I could get that too work.

Then lastly having the code uploaded to a cloud service so it could run 24/7 and provide live updated stats on a website and/or be used as a discord bot but that's not important right now. Right now I just need the first 2 things to get started.

The end goal is to have the program run by itself on like Google cloud or AWS or some cloud site so I don't have to rely on my own computers. I'd like for everything to be condensed into one location for ease of access and use. At this point apart from paying someone to do it (which I'm ok with) I'm not sure where to look or where to even begin. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated! Sites, videos, just misc info, whatever...
