As a web dev, what are the pros and cons of working for: (1) the government, (2) a start-up, and (3) a large company? Am I missing anything here?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 01:55 PM PDT

I'm starting a course on web dev with co-op built-in to the program, and by next year, I'll have to decide what jobs to apply for. I'm thinking of going the start-up route because I feel that it would be more fulfilling for me, personally. Government feels like chaining myself, and a large company isn't the type of work environment that I want to be a part of. I could be putting them all under an umbrella, but I just want to be working for a start-up. I know that I likely won't be getting paid as well as a larger company (don't know how bad the loss is, but it's not so much about money for me).

Through CO-OP, I'm offered both sweet opportunities with a larger company and with the government. Will working for a start-up be screwing me over long-term and missing out on a good opportunity and potential growth (assuming I end up changing my mind), or does it really not matter what I choose, so long as I have the skill and experience built over time, and it's not FAANG (as I've heard that they hold more weight on a resume)?

I don't want to be that guy who cares more about his resume than what I personally want for myself to explore and grow from, but I also don't want to be screwing myself over long-term, so I'd appreciate any advice from some of you guys who are experienced in the field, to know if I'm not seeing something, or if I'm making a huge mistake, potentially.

WTF is the appeal of middle management?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 10:16 PM PDT

    Screwed in all 3 holes:

    • Screwed by the Client
    • Screwed by executive management
    • Screwed by people reporting to you

At the very best, you'd be lucky if you have SME engineers who know a particular technology inside out and so they leave their workday always feeling like a rockstar. At the worst, you have disgruntled engineers who are capable but feel like they deserve more despite not showing any sort of leadership potential.

You have the client who is intent on getting every bang for their buck and you're the #1 target in their minds.

You have upper management who live in their ivory tower and haven't touched code in 10 years and have lost touch with how things actually get done. They set a grandiose vision and it's so perfect in their minds that anyone who bursts their bubble, guess who? That's you. You are now their #1 enemy.

I started my career as a software engineer and I was pretty good at it. Got promoted through the ranks. I kept having the feeling I'd do a better job if I was in a leadership position. So finally, I achieved that. I achieved my career goal.

    And boy, was I disillusioned.

Much to my shame, I've regretted that I've lost my shit in front of senior management. I've lost my temper. I literally broke down at the enormity of the pressure whilst at the same time having my hands tied.

I want to start over as a senior engineer and a SME. I would even take a paycut doing it but right now due to COVID as well as the fact that I've marked myself as a "manager", it's hard to get those pure engineering roles.

This is the classic case of the disillusionment that occurs when one actually achieves their goals. I feel like a stupid mofo for ever wanting the position that I have now. And can't imagine WTF I was thinking at the time.

WTF is the appeal of positions like this? You get blamed if things go wrong for implementing a vision that sucked and was unrealistic to begin with. You are responsible for carrying things out and take all the blame for the fuckups that happen under you. You shoulder the burden of everyone's problem. And even when success happens, are you gonna be a hero? No. Senior management will get the private accolades and some under-the-table goodies. The senior engineers or rockstar developers on your team will be seen as the true heroes, the ones who did the work.

Meanwhile, you the orchestrator, the person who coordinated and planned and ran everything, you're just a goddamn fly on the wall.

I'd like to hear more from people who are in this position and what their plans are for getting the fuck out.

Looking for guides on AWS, Azure or other cloud hosting for people that grew up with "cPanel on a shared server" type of hosting

If you know of any guides with this target audience in mind, let me know. I'm trying to unlearn all there is about using cPanel and FTP-ing websites in shared hosting plans to better understand when and why I would use something like AWS or Azure instead.

Anyone else have the experience of being overworked, underpaid, and stressed out as a junior dev at a small agency?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 04:31 PM PDT

I'm a new developer with one year of experience. I couldn't get a job anywhere but ended up finding employment at a small web design agency (< 7 people). The pay is below average for entry-level devs. Also, we bill all our time to clients so I have to record at least 40 hours every week on a time sheet. The project budgets are very tight, and I have little support as I develop, manage, and interface with clients, all while keeping hours spent to an absolute minimum. My company has no concept of context-switching, so I lose a lot of time switching between multiple projects - time that I have to make up in the evenings. This is putting a serious strain my relationships and social life (or what's left of it in the pandemic).

More venting: I sometimes resent my friends who make double/triple what I make as they spend half the day browsing reddit. One of them works at a large tech company and works less than 10 hours per week. The average appears to be around 30 hours per week amongst my friend group - meanwhile I'm scrambling for 40+ hours per week and oftentimes the work bleeds into my weekend. It's exhausting mentally and emotionally.

TLDR; I work at a small agency and have to put in lots of extra time and wear many different hats to meet expectations. It's stressing me out and I know I can't keep this up for too much longer.

    Finished Contract- now what?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 05:15 PM PDT

Hello! So happy to say I am finishing up my first freelance contract from my first full stack web dev project. My question is, what do y'all do professionally to keep your previous clients happy!?

Obviously it's time to go get another freelance job(just did that), but I am curious of your interaction with clients post contract. I'd love if I could stay a part of their team- specially since it's my work. Is that a typical thing?

    Thanks!

I just wanted to take a little time to thank everyone who take their valuable time to help others.

Even answering to something very small and simple for a few seconds. I want you to know that it means a lot to noob me and people like me who needs help.

And for the beginners: don't forget to help others when you get good at something. I am also trying to give back to community whenever I can.

I love this community and people. Not just on reddit, on other platforms as well.

    Thank you a lot!

How does a CDN 'download' all assets from a website?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 02:00 PM PDT

So when signing up for a CDN, you just have to enter the URL of your site and you're ready. Then you only have to replace all your asset URL's to use the CDN domain.

However, I'm wondering how the CDN automatically downloads all the assets (images, JavaScript files, etc) from your website to replicate them on the CDN servers. Does it use a crawler? It feels like the content is like instantly available after activating the CDN, so how does it do that so fast?

Anyone seen creative ways to approach this? Website framework is html and php but i imagine this would incorporate javascript or something too. Anyone ever seen anything like this? I only know adsense, and I dont know if it has a way to include something like this

How do dynamically created pages like JsFiddles get indexed by Google?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 12:41 PM PDT

If you search for something programming related like you're pretty likely to find a code playground like CodePen or JsFiddle in the search results. These pages are dynamically created when you hit save. If you search JsFiddle in Google Keyword or Ubersuggest you can see it has 200k keywords in Google indexed pages.

I'm wondering how are these pages getting indexed by Google? I can't find any Sitemaps, or index pages with links referencing each fiddle for Google to crawl. I'm trying to implement something similar but I can't figure out how they're doing it to replicate it.

How to think about saving XP on browser game

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 04:18 PM PDT

Sorry - I would normally google for this but I don't even know how to think about this.

I'm not a game developer at all. I want to create a small browser game where the user will gain a lot of experience. For my purposes, you can think about this as a text-based game where a user can gain XP.

I'm assuming devs don't save to the database every single time someone gains a small amount of xp. I was thinking about saving to local storage and saving the total every 30 seconds or so, but it just doesn't feel right and seems prone to mistakes happening. Can someone please point me to the right direction?

Want to make a move from the hellscape that is embedded firmware into web-dev. Need some advice and motivation. [x-post from r/cscareerquestions]

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 07:23 AM PDT

    Hello everyone,

As the title says, I want to make a move from firmware development into web-dev. I have a lot of anxiety about the move, so I'm hoping that this subreddit can give me some advice and motivation. There's a lot here, so MASSIVE thank you in advance if you take the time out of your day to read and answer :)

    My background

I graduated with a 1st class (4.0 gpa) degree in electronic engineering with honours back in 2018. I am currently 26. I worked 1 year as an intern between my 2nd and 3rd year of uni, worked 4 months as an embedded software developer at a startup, and am currently working as an embedded software developer for a larger company. I am miserable at the current job due to a variety of factors including poor social atmosphere, disinterest in the product, lack of guidance or mentoring (I am the only software developer in the company, and my manager does not know C or review my code), lack of progress on project even after 1 year due to management ineptitude and my own depression/apathy, and a disinterest in electronics and embedded systems.

    Current situation

I have come to the slow realisation in the past year that I don't actually enjoy electronics, embedded systems, and hardware nearly as much as I enjoy the software development. This change in perspective has been accompanied by me losing interest in C (my job's programming language) in favour of more high-level languages such as python and JavaScript. I have admittedly become lazy in my current job, as I've already been through a handful of mental breakdowns and find that apathy is my best mental defense until I find a new job.

    Where I want to be

I would like to begin working as a web-developer due to the more interesting nature of the job, as well as the greater creativity (relative to C) offered by JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and various frameworks. I simply LOVE how I can create the most beautiful websites and have fun while doing it. While always initially daunting, I enjoy the process of setting up a index.js and letting my imagination run wild with UI/UX designs or staying up until 1am finding a clever way of implementing a solution using JS libraries. I am still blown away by how this almost seems like a superpower, being able to make the coolest apps I can think of whenever the hell I want.

    What I've been doing

I have been busy on the Odin project moving along with personal projects. I am halfway through the JS course and have completed 4 projects which I have spend a great deal of time polishing. This has brought my Github portfolio up to 13 projects which also include some simple game development using python and c++, and well as python automation for my main job.

    Questions

Here are the questions I have. I am happy to elaborate on any of them if needed.

    • Should I begin a new web-dev job as a junior. I am tempted for a junior position because I believe it will give me more time to learn the basics , incline the company to provide me with a mentor, and allow me a slight breather while I learn the ropes of the new job and working in a team.
    • What is it like to work in web-dev, especially as a beginner?
    • Will I be frowned upon if I don't perform as well as my experience would suggest? I'm still relatively new to software development and I feel that my current job as not done me any favours in terms of technical experience. In fact, my C skills have badly degraded since starting due to depression.
    • Should I wait until I finish the Odin project, or just jump into a web-dev job asap?
    • What will increase my chances of getting a web-dev job?
    • Any recommendations on how I can improve?

Thank you everyone for your help, and have an awesome day ^_^

Website design - allow users to upload confidential files/documents

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 04:02 PM PDT

A client has requested to add a file/upload feature to their website. The nature of the files will have personal sensitive information (tax documents, etc). I have knowledge of uploading files. However, I was wondering if there is a best practice or what methodologies I should consider because of the nature/content of the files that are being uploaded.

    I appreciate any advice.

    Thanks.
