    Should I still create a subreddit and discord and sort of try to build a community for a simple horror game that I've been working on for 4 months and will still work on it for 2 more?

    Posted: 10 Sep 2020 11:32 AM PDT

    Hey guys,
    So I've been working on my game for like 4 months and plan to release it on Christmas, the game is 98% complete just a few tweaks and stuff. I read somewhere that you should start telling people about your game before release so I thought these two months might be good for it, but now I doubt it,
    Like I'm questioning if my game is worth it? I mean it's an indie horror game, with around 30-40 minutes of gameplay... Is that enough? I mean isn't building a community for bigger games? with a longer story and stuff?

    Now I've played my game like a thousand times, at first it was fun but now it seems boring lol.....

    I know it's because I've already played it... but it's sort of keeping me down, I'm not as motivated as I was, and don't really believe in it.

    So, in short, "Should I still create a subreddit and discord and sort of try to build a community for a simple horror game?"

    Can I use a fake company logo in my video game?

    Posted: 10 Sep 2020 10:56 AM PDT

    Im planning on making a video game. At the moment im just making some 3D models.
    Well, I just made a PC screen and though it would be a nice detail if I added a logo to it. I tought that I could rename the company's name and change the logo (ex; ASUS = VSIS).
    So, can I use a similar logo as ASUS logo, but it's called VSIS and it's created by me?
    Will I be risking a lawsuit if I do so?

    Resources (Text, Video), about how other (older) engines work?

    Posted: 10 Sep 2020 10:34 AM PDT

    I'm very interested in engines - a year or so ago I went through the Quake 2 engine source to see how it worked, and based parts of my engine on it. Additionally, my collision system has been influenced by things I saw about the Mario 64 engine. I think a lot of good research and reverse engineering goes into games like SM64 because it helps with exploiting glitches or physics for TAS. Do you know of any other good resources on how engines like these (older engines, in particular) work on the low level?

    I need help what kind of programming approach this is?

    Posted: 10 Sep 2020 12:11 PM PDT

    This is a rather unconventional question because there may not be a clear cut answer for this.

    So, I realized putting a lot of variables which need not be updated frequently in the game loop is bad practice. I put all the updating logic in one function which is called when the specific event occurs.

    For example : calculating the weight of the player rigid body. Instead of calculating the weight of the body every frame by adding everything in the inventory, I assign a variable with the total weight which is used every frame. When something is equipped on unequipped, updateWeigt() is called.

    I think this saves the processor some unnecessary computation.

    What kind of programming approach is this called?

    I know this is a naive question and I'll say I'm a rookie too, and since I'm learning this all by myself I don't know much about types of programming techniques.

    Please do answer if you can.

    Free/Cheap Photoshop pixel art alternatives (Unity)?

    Posted: 10 Sep 2020 12:07 PM PDT

    I'm a college freshman currently working on a game using pixel art. I used Photoshop as my primary art tool because my old high school was still paying for creative cloud licensing for me and others, but now that that's run out I'm a bit stick. I'm still in early development, but I haven't yet created all of my character, enemy, and weapons assets, so switching to just any program could be an issue, mainly because I tend to recycle models when creating new characters. Are there any recommended tools that I can use to make pixel art for Unity? Preferably something that I can transfer Photoshop files to (if those exist).

    Thanks.

    Help me choose an architecture for a mmo text RPG

    Posted: 10 Sep 2020 11:42 AM PDT

    I have some ideas from a text based mmorpg (well maybe not massive, just multiplayer online), but i don't know what to use from server side, I was thinking in using an message based comunication using websockets, but i don't know if it's the best idea or if it's secure or expensive to maintain an websocket opened with every client, also i don't know if there are another options.
    I'd prefer also using java + mongodb for serverside beacuse i don't want a 5000 lines file for nodejs so if you have some libraries or tools i'd appreciate every suggestion.
    Pd: sorry for the grammar, i'm not a native english speaker

    Does anyone know if Shadows In Darkness are still in business?

    Posted: 10 Sep 2020 10:53 AM PDT

    I ask in a follow up to my previous post here. Shadows In Darkness were an outsourcing company based in Sunrise, FL. I feel that there may be a small possibility they could still have their assets that they had made. For context, I'm working on a project where I'm essentially remaking/remastering a 2.5D point and click game into a full 3D First Person Puzzle game. So far everyone I've spoken to have been very helpful, but were not able to provide the files due to either not having them anymore or even not knowing where they would be. If there is any hope for trying to faithfully remaster it, the assets that the game originally had would help exponentially in terms of doing so.

    How can i interpolate angle here?

    Posted: 10 Sep 2020 10:18 AM PDT

    Hey , i have a question ,im trying to make a game and i don't know how i can make it so it slows down the rotation with mouse following

    updateAngle: function(target){
    var dy = this.pos.y - target.y;
    var dx = this.pos.x - target.x;

    var mousedistance = Math.sqrt(dx * dx + dy * dy)
    if (mousedistance > 7){

    var theta = Math.atan2(dy, dx); // range (-PI, PI]
    theta *= 180 / Math.PI; // rads to degs, range (-180, 180]
    if (theta < 0) theta = 360 + theta; // range [0, 360)
    this.angle = theta
    }

    },

    i don't know how i can make the angle go slower(its very fast.)
