    Jr Web Dev Jobs?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 02:49 PM PDT

So what's involved with working remotely? I'm giving up on freelancing and I want to start applying for some remote jr dev positions in the UK. I want to get the experience as well as building a network of contacts so I can get the contracts that pay £300-£400 a day which I'm not going to get freelancing for small local businesses.

What's holding me back is I'm worried my age will be a hindrance, especially with nothing relevant on my CV and no references. I'm 35 and have spent the past 3 years freelancing, doing brochure websites and digital marketing. I've basically been doing my own thing from my flat. The digital marketing side of things doesn't really interest me, I find I spend most of my time selling digital marketing, but it's how I get my web design work by building landing pages for Facebook ads. It's tiring spending 90% of your time doing something you have no interest in so you can do dev work 10% of the time.

I can show my portfolio and what I've built, but I haven't got references or any formal qualifications. I've never done a CV in my life, let alone have anything to put on it.

    Any advice?

    Coding Bootcamps?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 11:21 AM PDT

I was wondering if you guys recommend coding boot camps for people if they have the money. I would have to do an online boot camp part-time because I work.

My question is, are they a good idea since I learn better with a mentor/teacher than just teaching myself. I would like to get one that can get me a job, though that might be tough. Career Foundry seems to be my best bet since I would be able to meet the the requirements for reimbursement if they can't get me a job.

What do you guys think? I see good reviews but then on other sites I see bad reviews.

EDIT: I have an Associate's Degree in Computer Information Technology

Starting a video series on game dev with typescript

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 06:51 AM PDT

    Hey!

I'm starting a series on 2d game development with typescript using the canvas. The videos are focused on how to properly structure your projects and how to build abstraction as you add more functionality.

Hopefully you enjoy, make sure to let me know what you think!

There are plenty of tutorials concerning API security, but how do I build a client-registration system to allow external parties to access to my APIs in a managed way?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 12:29 PM PDT

It seems like a fundamental question, but one that isn't covered in any tutorials I've seen - if I want to make an API, and I presumably want people to be able to use it, how can I let them use it in a secure, maintainable way?

Think Twitter, Google - really any site with a developer. subdomain. They've got users and ergo user-data. They've got third-parties wanting access to that user data. Therefore, they have a portal for third-parties to apply for OAuth2.0 client credentials (client-id, secret, scopes, callback URI etc.) in addition to providing reasoning behind their integration (title, description, privacy policy).

If I decide I want to build, say, a todo-list application, I can start with an identity service that allows users to authenticate and ultimately log-in and manage their own data against my database, likely through some sort of modern front-end SPA. That, I understand!

Next, I could expose their data in a public API. Logically, I could restrict the data returned by the API to only the logged-in user, or furthermore allow users to generate an API key. This pattern isn't widely recommended, as users may have their key stolen.

I've had some experience with managed Authorization Servers like Ory Hydra, but as far as I gather, client creation is either bootstrapped or performed via a CLI.

So, with that context out of the way - how do I make it so a third-party developer could create a client dynamically - am I doomed to roll-my-own? The terminology I've Googled is so generic that I'm just seeing a melting pot of OAuth 101 tutorials - not to disparage them or take open-source for granted, but I feel like what I'm missing must be a solved-problem.

What do you all think? Thanks in advance for your input.

The "Over 30 & Learning Web Dev" Club

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 04:12 PM PDT

So who here is over 30 and learning web dev for a career change or for just a better tomorrow?

Thinking about starting a discord group for us. I'm guessing that most of us never quite found our place in the world in our 20's for whatever reason. I've spoken to some on here. Some of us spent our 20's in the military, some of us thought we had it all worked out in our 20's and made bad decisions, and some of us just got stoned way too much in our 20's and put things off until tomorrow. I'm also guessing that like me, you're trying to learn as much as you can, as fast as you can, while working out the lay of the land from a career opportunity perspective, all while at times having that sinking feeling that you're getting old and, you've fucked it because you're not where you wanted to be in life. I think it's good to connect with people in the same situation because it gives perspective to your own situation and clarity on your chosen path.

So who else is in this club?

Install DKIM email key on Shared Hosting (CloudLinux)

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 01:36 PM PDT

Am I going to be forced to use G Suite to integrate all emails through their system to gain DKIM support? I was hoping maybe there is a service that will host DKIM keys possibly to accommodate shared servers. Is anyone familiar? Curently running CloudLinux 6.5 on GoDaddy's "WordPress Managed" hosting. I have SSH access, but of course, no permissions to do anything exciting. Thanks for the heads up!

Good places to buy HTML/Css/Js quality snippets ?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 12:24 PM PDT

I mostly do backend and tinkering with css to find the exact breakpoint where it goes wrong or fighting with bootstrap classes isn't very productive and is very frustrating. There are plenty of free snippets/themes but it takes time to find + most of them have outdated design ( or are not adapted to actial browsers ) or end up breaking everything because of "bad" Css selectors. I'm not really searching for themes but for individual snippets like good looking and responsive sidebar , good searchbars etc. I know bootstrap provide these kind of things but it's too generic, pretty limited and force you to use Bootstrap. Thanks in advance !

thoughts using static pages (no js) when the page has credentials input

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 03:51 PM PDT

A while back this article left an impression on me: I'm harvesting credit card numbers and passwords from your site. Here's how.

The main takeaway for me was that using npm packages on the frontend introduces a large attack surface area. My app needs JS, but can do without it for pages like registration, login, and payment. It would take extra effort to make this split. Is this worth it?

Tool recommendation for static blog generation?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 06:39 AM PDT

So currently I'm using ghost for my blog, and I've had a couple of "hugs of death" from hacker news, so I'm looking for a more static alternative.

Ideally I'd like to have a nice WYSIWYG editor like ghost for working in markdown, and then just be able to export the content to static files which I can dump in an S3 bucket or something and not worry about traffic.

Ideally it would also come out of the box with fairly nice styling which works on mobile and PC screen sizes.

Does something like this already exist? It seems like it must.

    Testing skill/abilities

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 03:12 PM PDT

Is there a type of "quiz" or other type of test to find out whether you are good at JavaScript or Java, CPP, etc.

I haven't done much coding for years. Kinda interested to find out what's leftover in my head or what I should learn to get my feet back into coding.

What are the privacy and legal concerns to be aware of when building an app or website for a client?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 02:50 PM PDT

My client has given me complete freedom of making his e-commerce app and website. If a legal issue comes up with the website in the future (design flaw, security issue, privacy) can I get in trouble for that?

GoDaddy keeps saying it will invoice me for products I don't own.

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 09:20 AM PDT

A few years ago I ordered a domain with hosting, I have sent that domain over to another account that is not owned by me.

Now, I'm getting an email if I don't renew within 12 days I will be charged $80 + the renewal fee?

I have checked my godaddy account and there are no active products, there is no way to turn off auto-renewal since I don't have any products.

Does anyone have experiences or advice that could help me avoid this ridiculous cost?

    Anonymous Deployment for Treasure Hunt

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 12:23 PM PDT

I am making a treasure hunt, and I want to build a website for it. However, it is of the utmost importance that no one is able to discover my identity after I publish the website.

I plan on using Hostinger and I see they have an option to enable domain privacy. I will do this. Is there any other way someone could find out who I am?

How do you handle needing 2FA info from clients?

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 12:04 PM PDT

I freelance and have my clients register their accounts. So for hosting and other things it is the client's email and they share the pw with me. If possible, I then make my own login for the account and use that. Maybe this is not best practice, but I'm self-taught. If there's a better way to do this I would like to know.

Anyway, the issue is for some services that use 2FA it sends the code to my client's email or cellphone, which is very inconvenient for me. How do you handle this?

Thinking about project naming and domains

    Posted: 23 Aug 2020 08:16 AM PDT

Which naming scheme is the most SEO-friendly? And which one is your personal preference? A descriptive name, a portmanteau, a more abstract name?

    For example:

    • Wine Taster — Winester – Bacchus
    • Speedy Food – Spood – Zuter
    • Easy Blog – Ealog – Pentip
    • General Store – Genstore – Clar
