do you delete a branch once you merge it into your master branch? Posted: 26 Aug 2020 08:21 AM PDT I'm still new to git, this is a quick question i had. [link] [comments] |
Any suggestions for a Rasberry PI camera? Posted: 26 Aug 2020 05:45 PM PDT Looking to create a home security system that would monitor my driveway. Ideally something that's good at night. [link] [comments] |
Drone Swarm lightshow simulator Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:51 PM PDT How would I change the shape of the waypoint to go from a sphere to a human looking area in the following file? Background: I'm trying to recreate this drone lightshow: with a free software I found https://github.com/gtri/scrimmage/blob/master/README.md. I got it working for all the drones to head to a waypoint and also avoid each other, like a real swarm. So first thank you to this community for helping me learn Linux, C++, and python! I'm new to programming but willing to learn! Tips:

How are highly customizable systems (like SAP ERP, Salesforce, etc) built? Posted: 26 Aug 2020 08:30 AM PDT In my experience with backend development, you design and code some services to fulfill certain business requirements, and you ship the result to production, possibly using something like Docker. The system that you made is static/fixed, in the sense that its functionality cannot be changed at runtime (it will only fulfill the business requirements that it was designed to). And if you use SQL for persistence, the SQL schema is also static/fixed (you don't create tables or columns at runtime). If business requirements change, you need to modify the service or build a new one, and ship it to production. The services code cannot be modified at runtime to fulfill the new business requirements. I don't have experience with systems like SAP ERP or Salesforce, but I heard that these systems can, at runtime, be highly customized or even programmed (with their own language, like ABAP o Apex/SOQL): they allow you to create new tables, new classes and new instances, new business flows, etc., all at runtime. It's like the system is able to change itself at runtime. I wonder how these systems are built. Do they use some advanced metaprogramming techniques? How are they able to be that much customizable? [Request] Language Suggestions Posted: 26 Aug 2020 08:02 PM PDT Looking for a language with robust applications but extremely simple syntax and documentation. Since Python seems to have this reputation and I still consider it convoluted, I'm guessing such a language doesn't exist, hence the question. When I say simple, I mean every call follows a very simple form: Method(input1, input2, etc) No [], no {}, no method.(), no commas in weird places. Simple. Documentation would be straightforward. Here's the inputs, here's the outputs, here's some examples of both, and here's the full code. Linux man pages are still too abstract for me. I want to follow the code, not decipher a couple sentences as to what a flag does to the code. Bonus: For whatever libraries need to be retrieved and installed from the internet, it would automatically retrieve and install all dependencies. Recently tried to teach myself R, and importing each library on its own is a serious pain. P.S. If I flair a post for language, should I be dropping F bombs? I can edit this later if it turns out I need to. [link] [comments] |
How to connect ReactJS/JS to .db file Posted: 26 Aug 2020 08:01 PM PDT New to ReactJS. Well versed in c++, python and other common languages. Struggling through JavaScript and ReactJS the past few days. Where I'm at: I have a file of data I would like to build a web app around. I converted the file to sqlite .db thinking that might be easier to work with. I know this is not best practice but I'm in the phase of building the front end of my software to mold what I would like the app to look like and get anything working. I have a bear bones web app structure from going through a bunch of online sources. Having trouble getting the data in and maturing the web app. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
How are fiber optic signals decoded/encoded so fast? Posted: 26 Aug 2020 12:18 PM PDT I recently saw the article about the new 178 terabit connection, but i wondered, how is the light signal decoded/encoded (I dont know which one it is in this case), so fast? Is it strictly hardware that does it, or is there some software that can somehow keep up with those speeds? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:46 AM PDT I use DuckDuckGo as my main search engine (for obvious reasons), but, lately, I've been finding that Google does a much better job of returning good search results to me. For instance, if I were to search based on a programming issue I'm stuck on, Google often leads me to better results quicker (i.e., its first two pages lead to much more relevant results that solve my issues quicker than the first two pages in DuckDuckGo, which saves me a ton of time and effort). But this stretches beyond programming. If I have any health-related questions or even politics-related questions, Google often does a better job at returning good, relevant search results that solve my questions more efficiently compared to those of DuckDuckGo. I'm wondering if this is just some sort of cognitive bias on my part or if it's actually a thing. [link] [comments] |
Is the TripleByte Interview a live interview with a real engineer? Posted: 26 Aug 2020 01:29 PM PDT So, I was given the option to schedule a two-hour video interview with an engineer who has a name as well as some listed hobbies, so I am curious if this is an actual live video interview with a real human or is it just an automated interview? How to distribute lightweight FOSS MacOS menu bar app? Posted: 26 Aug 2020 05:08 PM PDT I'm working on developing a small app in the Mac menu bar mostly for personal use/Obj-C practice. It interfaces with wanikani, a website with a fantastic API and a lot of plugins/scripts/etc. that take advantage of it. What's the best way for this app to be available and easy for users to install on their computers? As I understand it, the App Store requires a costly developer license and I'm not trying to make any money from this program. I could distribute the Obj-C/Swift source code, but that seems like an unnecessarily high barrier to entry. Is it as simple as creating a [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Aug 2020 04:44 PM PDT Hi, I'm trying to create a website that will allow people to shop and compare health care prices. It goes like this, you put in the treatment you are looking for, then the program will tell you where you find it in your area and how much it costs. I'm crawling the websites to collect the data. But I was wondering what other programming is needed. [link] [comments] |
[PHP][MySQL] Optimizing dynamic/live search operation from database. Posted: 26 Aug 2020 07:55 AM PDT Greetings. In my web application I have database-tables in almost all of the pages. They follow this format https://i.imgur.com/adWHzik.png where the 2nd row/header serves as real-estate for both, taking new user input and performing live database search. A Jquery on.keydown event listens for any input on these input fields and performs an Ajax call to a php script which queries the data using (Where target_column LIKE %input_field%' and so on (of course using prepared statements). No problem so far. The issue becomes obvious when I inspect the Network tab https://i.imgur.com/oIzgUuR.png Even the smallest (1 sentence) search operation fills the entire tab with calls to the PHP script. I believe this could become a problem, perhaps not now but down the road. And it doesn't seem like a performant approach on the long run. Any idea how I could tackle this problem without compromising the user experience? for example, setting up a <search> button would defeat the purpose of it being a LIVE search. [link] [comments] |

Python: I want to find a match of 5 consecutive integers in a list within another list Posted: 26 Aug 2020 12:26 PM PDT I have a 5 element list of integers. I want to find a match of these 5 elements within a much larger list of integers that is the size of 1,000,000 random integers. Once I have found a match I want the index where the match begins. I simply cannot figure out how to do this with loops in python. I basically iterate through my big list with for x in big_list: if x == small_list[0] then a huge if statement matching x sub next element == small_list sub next element & so on for all five digits. I cannot believe I can't figure this out it seems like such an easy problem. [link] [comments] |
Books about modern software engineering practices Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:40 AM PDT My engineering education goes back to the early 00s, and back then there were a few books that were staples, like GoF Patterns, Clean Code and Patterns of Enterprise Application Development. Many of these books are still relevant today, even if just partially, but I cannot find any new books that address the same content in a modern context, integrating new technology like cloud and CI/CD. If you had to recommend one book that covers the development of software in a world with cloud, containers, microservices, CI/CD pipelines and all the rest, which one would you recommend? Posted: 26 Aug 2020 06:43 AM PDT I recently had the idea to switch from my QWERTZ keyboard layout to a more ergonomic one. Since I am a programmer I also wanted to get one which is better for programming. I found 3 layouts which look pretty good and I wanted to know which one you guys can recommend or if there are any others you prefer.
btw I mainly use C based languages and my native language is german. [link] [comments] |
Could dynamic programming help filtering a subset from a set, matching certain criteria? Posted: 26 Aug 2020 10:12 AM PDT Edit: I know there are already many modern and optimized compression algorithms, even zstandard has a mode to use a external dictionary. This is just some algorithms learning from my part :D I was experimenting with small strings compression, focusing in 8bit cpus, and was thinking about a more abstract way of what I was doing (word compression with indexes to a dictionary). You have a set of n items, and the problem is selecting k elements from the set that best match certain matching function. The problem I see is combinatorial explosion. The filter function searchs in the set all possible combinations of k elements. maxing the matching function in all that space. I never used dynamic programming by myself, just as already done algorithms as Levensthein distance and other ones. From what I've read maybe this could help? I could try freq analysis as a help for the filtering, or adding other criteria, as word size. Also its a good excuse to try genetic programming and generate random subsets and running them through articial evolution. Any ideas for an approach to reduce the workload filtering the combinatorial space? My matching function is already defined, maximum compression, as is what I was looking for. [link] [comments] |
What does your product development process look like? Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:52 AM PDT Hi all, we are at a transition point in our development process. Right now we use Trello to keep track of all our tasks / bugs / stories / etc. We have reached Trello's limitations and would like an improved system for our product development roadmap. Ideally we are looking for a system where we can categorize each task [bug, feature] and it's underlying purpose [user satisfaction, user engagement, user acquisition] etc. At the beginning of each week I would like to be able to quickly filter based on purpose [user satisfaction, engagement, …] and create a queue of tickets. Then, when myself or fellow developer starts to code each morning, we just pull up tasks from the queue and work on them until they are complete, and then mark them as done. Can anyone recommend a good tool for this? I've heard of Jira, but was a bit overwhelmed with all the choices (Roadmap, board, agile, scrum ,etc, etc). I'm sure this question may lead to a deep theoretical discussion of product development , but really I'm just looking to hear what works for you and your team and what tools you enjoy using. Tough finding a job, how to fill in skills gap? Posted: 26 Aug 2020 01:13 PM PDT Due to the way I ended up being a dev (pretty much falling into it), and the projects I worked on for the last several years (highly specialized with not too many transferrable skills), I'm finding myself having a tough time finding a job now. I consider myself at least a mid-level developer, and (according to the recruiters), many employers are initially receptive to my resume, but they end up passing because I don't have a key skill they want, namely developing microservices. Yes, believe it or not, I worked for 5 years on a project that didn't implement microservices. I've taught myself to do this on my own on personal projects, but not on an enterprise level, so of course that doesn't mean squat to employers. So I'm wondering if anyone else out there has had to fill in a skills gap, and how it went. I was thinking trying to do a small freelance job (for free) just so I can have something to point at. Anyone else ever dealt with this? [link] [comments] |

Referencing multiple part numbers that differ per customer. Posted: 26 Aug 2020 12:42 PM PDT Edit: this is using Python and openpyxl So I'm using an API to pull item numbers to then fill an excel spreadsheet pick list. When I fill that pick list, depending on the customer name, I need to also add the customers item number (which for some customers is different from our item number). The customer item numbers are not found anywhere on the website so they are only saved in an excel spreadsheet and can't be pulled using the API. Any suggestions for what the most concise/simple way to pull this customer part # would be? I have a dictionary of our item numbers but the value is the qty on the order. Maybe I need to build a separate dictionary where the value is the customer item number? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
How to successfully change user agent in Selenium script? Posted: 26 Aug 2020 11:36 AM PDT I'm currently using Selenium (written in Python) to automate a Bing search via Chrome. I want the script to automate opening Chrome with the User-Agent set to Edge Mobile. According to information in the Chrome devtools, the User-Agent should read: When I try searching through Bing on a regularly opened Chrome whereby I manually change the User-Agent to Edge and Mobile, Bing acknowledges that I am performing searches via Edge and mobile (Bing can track where you searched). However, when I use my script, it does not recognize that the searches are via Edge & mobile. This script used to work, but recently Bing won't recognize the changed User-Agent, even though the UI appears to change. Here is my full code: I believe all my packages and chromedriver are up to date. The interface opens and runs the searches when I use the script (and the UI seemingly changes to mobile), but Bing does not register this search as a mobile search nor an Edge search, for whatever reason. But it does work when I open up Chrome manually and change the User-Agent manually. I have another script that does the same thing without the User-Agent code (so just searching via regular Chrome desktop user agent) and Bing recognizes this as it should (as a desktop search). Here is an error code I am receiving in the command prompt when running the above script, as well: I simply want the script to search with the Edge & Android Mobile user agent, which it appears to be doing considering the Chrome UI changes to a mobile one in the test automation, but Bing doesn't recognize it as such. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
My virtual environments are a mess... How do I start over? Posted: 26 Aug 2020 11:08 AM PDT Hi everyone! Kinda newbie in programming. I am gonna try to keep it short. I started programming with Matlab for scientific research, and then discovered the beautiful world of programming out there and started playing around with python, r and javascript. And LATER, I discovered the concept of virutal environment (don't ask my how I discovered that later, I don't know, I'm messy). And now I am completely lost because I have really been super disorganized, I probably have several versions of python and r on my laptop, I have no clue of where I installed libraries and always get errors related to the fact that probably the library I am trying to load is not in my current env. So... how do I start over so I can make it all clean and clear ? Hope that whole post makes sense (it is not impossible that I use the wrong vocabulary here and there)! Thanks in advance for helping me come back to the righteous path :) [link] [comments] |
