    A lot of the principles here can be applied to the acquisition of a new programming language, or simply brushing up on a pre-existing one. It'll provide you with a solid foundation on how to acquire and maintain knowledge, counter procrastination and form positive habits. Let me know what you think :)

    If you are passionate about programming and CS, never give it up!

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 05:42 AM PDT

    I'm self-taught developer, 34 yo, who decided to become full stack developer one year ago for my own personal reasons. It was really tough year for me to understand which path to take, what technologies and stack to learn. As per my background, I have BA in international business and been working in managing different types of businesses for last 10 years. The only knowledge in programming I had is 2 years in computer school long time ago(when I was in high school), where we learned Basic and Pascal. So I had almost zero knowledge of what I was going to do. The reason I desided to learn how to build websites for starter - one year ago I saw some video explaining which skills you can learn and develop over a year spending only 1 hour per day(Actually I spent way more hours). It changed my mind about CS and I gave it a try. For first few months of learning everything was so frustrating and confusing, all those tags in html, css and its preprocessors(sass/less/scss), bem, git and github(how to push/pull etc.), later on basics of JS and its frameworks, Dom manipulations and additional libraries/frameworks. I started to understand only half year later when I chose MERN stack and realised that I finally got what I wanted. And now I have my first real project to build website for real estate company which belongs to person working in local government. Price of this website is 3250$ and time I managed to get to complete it 1,5 months but actually it will be completed in less then 3 weeks. The reason I wrote so long text is that I see a lot of people who got so lost even after completing full university degrees in CS and don't know what to do later. Don't give up if you lost in something or got stuck on half way of your project or you don't understand what to do next. Programming society is so helpful and when you got right questions you will get right answers and support. (And of course, google and stackoverflow will get you some of possible solutions). I hope my little story give you maybe some motivation to move forward and get in place you want to be. Never give up!

    Should I take a python crash course or jump right into my project?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:16 PM PDT

    I want to create a price comparison scraping website using beautiful soup 4 and python. I'm relatively new to both as well as programming.

    For anyone who has been in a similar position. Should I just jump in and start my project and learn as I go or would it be more efficient to go through a python crash course to learn the fundumentals of the language itself?

    How much planning do you do before actually doing any coding?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:14 PM PDT

    What does that process look like for you? How much detail does your "plan" go into? Should everyone do a lot of planning before sitting at the computer? I'm still very much a beginner and wondering how important it is.

    Regarding Data Science, what paid course/certification would you recommend?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 06:02 PM PDT

    Hi everyone, thanks for watching this post!

    Well, I'm industrial engineer and I'm on the search of launching my career to the data science/engineering field. I've been learning Python and SQL by myself, through free courses, and I also have some basis about advanced statistics.

    Right now I think it would be good to pay a course related to DS, since I've read that sometimea too massive and free courses are not so good in terms of quality, and I would also like to get a nice and beautiful certification to put on my LinkedIn profile and improve my chances of getting a job related to DS.

    Which paid Data Science course would you recommend as the best?

    Thanks in advance!

    Is it OK to share blocks of codes here for discussion?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 09:14 AM PDT

    A little about me: I'm a system developer but I haven't really made anything big enough to be proud of. I specialize in .net. But I've dabbled in other areas such as java, and python. But I mainly stuck to .net because I found making GUIs simpler there than any other languages.

    Anyway, I have these bunch of codes that I've developed over the years. I'm kind of proud of it, but having no one to talk to means no one is there to point out my mistakes or offer improvements. In my current job I'm the sole developer and bouncing the ball off the wall gets depressing after quite a bit.

    So I was wondering if it's OK to post blocks of codes here for discussion. If stackoverflow is a place for solid solutions, then what I'm looking for here are opinions or insights, or better yet, constructive criticism. Simply because I want to improve myself.

    P.S. I'm new to reddit, so if I did anything wrong, sorry in advance.

    In CSS how do you decide whether to create spacing between HTML elements using the padding or margin property?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 08:03 PM PDT

    Is there any standard conventions for this? Like if you had two images next to each other or a header on top and a paragraph on the bottom, does it matter which property you is to add space between elements? I know you can also change the position of each element by changing its position property as well. So with all of these different ways of positioning elements, classes and id selectors how do you decide which method to use?

    How do I measure my self-taught programming skills if it's valuable enough to put in a resume?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 03:53 PM PDT

    Basically I'm heading on to a career switch with already 8 years from my current profession in Building Information Modelling. The switch is not really that far from my industry as there is currently a niche sector in computational design (architecture) but I am hoping to have a full blown programming career in the future leaving the highly regulated AEC industry but probably would still be somewhat related like working for Autodesk (or other CAD brands) and VDC environment.

    But I don't really have the programming foundation both academically and professionally, so I am learning it all by myself. Thankfully internet is full of resources I can exhaust but honestly I am overwhelmed at how deep and intricate this industry is. I can learn the scripting or coding itself but whenever i read documentations and theories, i just find myself unable to relate at all. Reading programming languages documentations is literally reading a language (linguistic) I can't understand it doesn't make sense to me. lol

    So anyway, I'm really concerned if after learning the gist of coding, if I can actually claim this skill in my future resume? What is the threshold so that I can say I can do the job? Do I need the deep level understanding of theories of computer science or practical knowledge would be enough? Will employers actually look at self-taught coders?

    How to make MP4 data from an http response into an MP4 file?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 11:20 PM PDT

    So, I'd like to write a script where I download part of an online mp4 file. I've written to the point where the script can download a user-input range of bytes from the file, but how can I take the response and turn it into an MP4 file that will properly compile (i.e. play as a video)? I'm relatively certain that this is possible, because the youtube-dl library accomodates a similar functionality. Thanks in advance.

    EDIT: I've tried just copy-pasting the mp4 data into a file, but I kinda knew that wouldn't work. Got a codecs missing error when opening it up with the video player.

    Repositories, compilanle Vs minimal

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:59 PM PDT

    I've heard many arguments from both sides of the debate. Either:

    • A repo should have everything required to compile the code, within it
      • Or, the repo should only contain non-compiled unique code, no libraries and not-even assets

    Is there any consensus on this, apart from languages that have a compiler, which manages external code such as GoLang?

    Which aspect of "first-class functions" refers to the ability to store functions in variables and executing them by appending () to the variable?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:57 PM PDT

    Hello!

    I come from Godot, where I am marginalized and ridiculed for wanting to be able to store functions in variables / objects. This functionality will come to the script in a year or so, so at least someone agrees with me.

    Anyway, looking at the wikipedia for first-class function, i really don't understand the majority of the text. The concept of first-class seems to branch into several apsects:
    - High-order functions (arguments / results)
    - Nested functions (Named / Anonymous)
    - non-local variables (Closures / Partial Application)

    I have no idea what any of it means.

    I just wanna do:

    function a(x) { return x + 1; } var b = a; var c = b(2);

    I come from a Javascript background, where everything is easy and permitted, so I was very confused when I learned that in GDScript I can't store functions in variables or objects, and have to execute them with a special method that takes a string of the function name as an arguemnt.

    Please explain this first-class thingie to me.

    Tnx

    Function for retrieving 3 types of data from MySQL database

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 07:11 PM PDT

    Public Structure SQL Dim Connection As MySqlConnection Dim Command As MySqlCommand Dim DataReader As MySqlDataReader Dim DataAdapter As MySqlDataAdapter Dim Transaction As MySqlTransaction Dim DataSet As DataSet Dim DataTable As DataTable Dim Server As String Dim Port As String Dim Username As String Dim Password As String Dim Result As String Dim Results As Dictionary(Of String, Object) End Structure Dim sql As New SQL Public Function SelectQuery(strQuery As String, intQueryType As Integer) With sql Try boolError = False .Command.CommandText = strQuery .Connection.Open() Select Case intQueryType Case 1 .Result = Nothing .Result = IIf(IsDBNull(.Command.ExecuteScalar()), Nothing, .Command.ExecuteScalar()) Return .Result Case 2 .Results = New Dictionary(Of String, Object) .DataReader = .Command.ExecuteReader .DataReader.Read() For count As Integer = 0 To (.DataReader.FieldCount - 1) .Results.Add(.DataReader.GetName(count), .DataReader(count)) Next Return .Results Case 3 .DataAdapter = New MySqlDataAdapter(.Command.CommandText, .Connection) .DataTable = New DataTable .DataAdapter.Fill(.DataTable) Return .DataTable Case Else Return Nothing End Select Catch ex As Exception GenerateErrorReport(ex) boolError = True Return Nothing Finally If Not .DataReader Is Nothing Then .DataReader.Close() If .Connection.State = ConnectionState.Open Then .Connection.Close() End Try End With End Function

    Sample usage:

    For one value only.

    strQuery = "SELECT `Name` FROM world.city WHERE `ID` = 1 Dim strCountryName As String = SelectQuery(strQuery, 1)

    For an entire row.

    strQuery = "SELECT * FROM world.city WHERE `ID` = 1 Dim results As Dictionary(Of String, Object) results = SelectQuery(strQuery, 2)

    For an entire table or multiple row results

    strQuery = "SELECT * FROM world.city WHERE `CountryCode` = 'AFG' Dim dt As DataTable = SelectQuery(strQuery, 3)

    I've been using this for years and I've tried to improve it. Only recently did I decide to share this for a code review and that maybe, someone else can do better. And I want to see it.

    I hope you guys can provide constructive criticism. I'm open for discussions and stuff. Also, I might get some terms mixed up, sorry about that.

    Thanks.

    Equation always equals 1

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:44 PM PDT

    I'm doing a CS50 problem, and to do it I made a function. Whenever I ran the code, the answer was super wrong, so I opened up the debugger and went step by step through the function. The variables are being transferred properly from my main code.

    Letters = 250

    Words = 55

    Sentences = 2

    The issue is, is that for some reason x = 1. I don't know how or why but what should be x = 100 / 55 results in x equaling 1. Am I missing something?

    int CLform(int letters, int words, int sentences)

    {

    float x;

    x = 100 / words;

    letters = letters * x;

    sentences = sentences * x;

    float index = 0.0588 * letters - 0.296 * sentences - 15.8;

    index = roundf(index);

    return index;

    }

    How would you program a Web App and a Desktop App differently?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:36 PM PDT

    Hi, I think I've finally got my head around how a web app works, where traditionally you have HTML, CSS, JS in the front end which interacts with a backend server which itself interacts with a database.

    I would love to know how are Desktop Apps developed differently then? What technologies do you use? Are the languages different? etc etc

    Another way of phrasing I guess is how would you program something like discord desktop differently from the discord web app?

    C Function Inside of a Function Pointer

    Posted: 27 Jul 2020 10:33 PM PDT

    While I was learning more about constant pointer variables and how to read them better, I came across a link about the spiral/clockwise method and so far it does work well but then I come across something that goes against everything I've learned about function pointers. (I'm still learning C) void (*signal(int, void (*fp)(int)))(int); What I don't understand is how you can have a function inside of a function pointer that returns a pointer, what I learned is something like this void (*functionPTR)(int, int); but I've never seen anything like the code above. Can someone tell me how this can even be made?

    Java sort set uppercase first then lowercase contents.

    Hi there,

    I have a set with contents: ("AZ", "az", "AB", "ab", "123", "D", "d"). And I want to sort it such that it is in the order ("123", "AB", "AZ", "ab", "az", "D", "d") with uppercase sorted before lowercase. I have tried String.CASE_INSENSITIVE_ORDER but this removes duplicates such as "AZ" and "az". Can someone help point me in the right direction on how to go about doing so?

Any advice on what details I should look out for? And how much should I charge? Thanks!
