I started a coding channel, my first series is a beginner series about game development with libGDX Posted: 29 Jul 2020 11:51 AM PDT I have been a long time leecher of free knowledge and wanted to give something back. So I started a youtube channel focused on game development. I still need to get used to the (still non existent) audience but I think the third episode already has significant improvement. At least I had to do a lot less cutting and almost no retakes. It's still hard for me to explain deep topics clearly but I feel this is a learning process. I have some more ideas and hope I can bring a different angle to tutorial land with my channel. I am very interested in some feedback since I am all new to this and English isn't my native language. This first series is a LibGDX series, in the 2nd episode I code a basic game in about 20 minutes and in the 3rd episode I start refactoring the code in order to add functionality to it. I'm hoping to get enough audience in this series to ask/poll what direction the game should go and implementations they would like to see. 1st episode (intro and setup) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_EXYXgQAZU&feature=youtu.be Skip to the 2nd for actual coding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-d0soMr7dA&t=218s [link] [comments]

Pixel Art - Pro's and Con's of 640x480/ 480x270/320x180? Posted: 29 Jul 2020 10:10 AM PDT I'm starting to make assets for a game and am deeply torn between which display resolution to use.
If I go with 480, what happens to other other popular resolutions like 720p and 1440p? I know games like Hyperlight Drifter and Owlboy are in 480, but I don't understand how they went about scaling for smaller resolutions (for example the portable Switch at 720p). Am I over thinking? This seems like a pretty important thing to understand before starting a project. [link] [comments]
Game creators, what are your thoughts on Steam key resellers like G2A? Posted: 29 Jul 2020 11:18 AM PDT I hope this post doesn't break this subreddit's rules, but I couldn't think of a better place to be able to ask game creators this question. I was reading an article last year about G2A from the perspective of a few game creators and they were talking about how they receive no money from Steam key resellers and that they would rather people pirate their games rather buying Steam keys for them because at least with piracy other people/companies don't profit off their hard work. What are your personal thoughts regarding Steam key resellers? [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Jul 2020 10:03 AM PDT So I want to make a website that will act as both my professional portfolio and kind of a website for all of the things I made for fun! I see a lot of people using their real names for their domain etc. Is it better to use my real name rather than my creative name? Most of my projects and things that people have seen mostly use my creative name rather than my real name tho... so I kind of shot myself there. [link] [comments]

Could it work if I were to make a 2D pixel art game using photos as backgrounds ? Posted: 29 Jul 2020 08:32 AM PDT I'm making a 2D platformer game and the character is pixel art. For the game backgrounds, could I use real life photos I took of sky to add a cool effect or would this look... off? [link] [comments]

Solution for developing at home and outdoors Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:35 AM PDT Do you know any solutions for programming on a PC at home at first and then afterwards on a laptop somewhere else and having your work synced on the PC and the laptop or at least making transition of your work on the other system fast. Not dealing with Dropbox and others cloud storages and not dealing with USB sticks. [link] [comments]
Any good framework to make games on Android? Posted: 29 Jul 2020 11:15 AM PDT I have mobile phone at my disposal whole day long and I want to make video games. Can anyone suggest how can I do it using my phone only? Any engine availible for Android? In the very least: are there any IDE for developing stuff using Android phones? I want to point out that I am not up to develop Android games, but I am up to do it using Android. EDIT: I don't care about the language itself, I have plenty of time to study anyway. Is anyone else stressed out about coworkers or acquaintances seeing your devlog? Posted: 29 Jul 2020 10:56 AM PDT Maybe not just coworkers; maybe friends/family. It's feels like, laying yourself bare. A bunch of strangers I'll probably never meet don't stress me out. But the judgement of people I see everyday finding out I have hopes and dreams only to watch me (most likely) fall on my face HARD. Or they silently think "oh man, THAT's what he's been doing with his time!? That won't work. That poor bastard." It's unavoidable, but still; the anonymity is a cozy blanket. Hopefully it's all unfounded. Or I'll choose to believe the thought is "Cool, he's just over there doing his thing." Oh! Maybe it's that people are slightly different around their different clicks; and maybe I'm worried someone will find out "He's really not who I thought he was, loser." Man, seeing this all typed out looks dumb and obvious. I can't silently judge other people's posts anymore. Also, I don't have a devlog yet. [link] [comments]
Using unity and GitHub file size. Posted: 29 Jul 2020 10:27 AM PDT So I am trying to collab on a project but when I try to commit, it exceeds the 100Mb limit. I have tried committing one folder at a time but most of my folders are >100MB. Any solutions? [link] [comments]

Doing a game about the dev life, and need your help... Posted: 29 Jul 2020 09:46 AM PDT The game idea came to me because I suck at communicating what is inside of me. I'm fluent in 3 languages and studied another 4, and yet the words keep missing. Tried creative writing, emotional drawing, music, and other channels for communication, but then I realised: I'm a game designer, why not design a game so I can express what I have inside? So here I am. Took a sabbatical off work, and want to try and make a (maybe depressing) game about life as a game dev. The mistrust from the family, the hurdles, the "99.8% games fail", the oversaturarion of the market, the self doubt, the health problems, the mental health issues created due to stress... As many things as possible. Think of it like a "choose your own adventure", with simple gameplay, of the "what if I was a game dev". My goal is not really to entertain, and definitely not to sell the game. The goal is trying to use a game to express what I struggle to say. What my life is, can, or could be. Because of this, I'm here to get your anecdotes as game Devs. Tell me a hurdle you went through, big or small. Tell me of an abuse you received because of this path you chose. Tell me a happy and lucky outcome. Speak up, want to have as many events ingame as possible. I'll keep you guys posted with the game. Want this to be my personal August project. Thanks in advance, wish you a great evening. [link] [comments] |
