Can someone help, I want to understand my boyfriend when he talks about programming.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 05:28 AM PDT

Hi smart humans, my boyfriend enjoys talking about programming, virtual machines, containers, red hat and Linux in general, does anyone have any links that I could study to learn things? He talks about tech stuff a lot and half of the time I have no clue what he's talking about, but I want to be more supportive.

Thank you so much, any links for beginners would be great!

I didn't pass my probation (Junior dev role)

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 07:27 AM PDT

I just got confirmation from my boss that I didn't pass my probation, I was told at this point (3 months) they expected me to handle simple task and medium levelled task independently. I struggled a lot but I felt like I had just started to 'get' it. Unfortunately, I got it too late and will be let go. I am upset, but I am still determined to learn programming and hopefully get a new job during these crazy times. I hope I can find something soon, I start working on my CV and projects tonight lol.

Question: When applying for new jobs, what reason should I give for only working for months? I'm assuming having three months worth of work experience is better than none.

Are there any full C# project "walkthroughs" on YouTube

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 05:01 AM PDT

I'm watching The Cherno's Game Engine Series in C++. I'm like 5 episodes in and I've already learned so much about how to properly build real-world applications in C++. The series has around 80 episodes currently and is still in the making (since it's such a massive project) and I've been wondering if there is a similar series on YouTube but written in C#? Thanks in advance!

Could someone hear out my understanding from 20 years ago and give me a rough idea of how things have changed?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 05:03 AM PDT

As a teen I used to make stuff back in the aol days with Visual Basic. It was a lot of fun but I was never under the delusion that I was a "real" programmer. But making things that got semi popular felt really good especially when I saw strangers use them.

I think it was the .bas files, that I'd get that had all the hard work done and I could call on whatever it was like a script.

Like I didn't know how to do any of that myself but I still had to work them into my programs and write all of the If/then stuff.

I had made a site that was pretty much what Facebook is now where I used a cgi script called newspro I think that let people log in and post stuff to the site. But again I was just doing the easy work of making the layout etc where the hard part (aka what I didn't even know how to do) was done for me.

I was just curious how modern programming is compared to what I used to do. Like so much legwork has got to be done already for making things like phone apps right?

    If you read, thanks

Maybe a stupid novice question but ...

I try to follow along a website building tutorial (in Brackets text editor) and I came across a problem with the logo image. Here https://imgur.com/Q9V5YAR instructor already has saved the img files in the website folder. I tried to do the same thing but all I could do is save the img file as a different folder: https://imgur.com/lOZ6H4k . It is a good practice to use an absolute path like that? Or should I save the img file in the same folder, and if yes how?

What should you do after learning a language?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 04:14 AM PDT

I'm currently learning how to code in python, but I keep on wondering what's next after I reach a basic level of understanding code and writing it myself... should I master python and learn it more in depth or should I learn another language like java script, c or java?

I help you write better structured code

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 02:05 PM PDT

I am an experienced Software developer, who wants to help beginners to become a better programmer. One problem I observed many beginners have, is that they tend to write hard to read spaghetti code, which is totally fine because you can't focus on everything at once. At some point you have to learn how to write better structured code, though.

I want to help you make that step. And this is how:

You send me a programm/script you wrote and I will do a youtube video in which I refactor your code with clean coding practices in mind, so that it could pass a professional code review. In that video I will comment on why I am doing certain changes and how it makes the code better readable/better structured/better testable. I hope that helps you to use that improvements in future code which you'll be writing.

The programm you send me must not exceed 1000 lines and must be written in one of the following programming languages: JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, Python. The code must be working as I don't do any bugfixes, you have to send me a link to a github repository or a pastebin which I can easily clone/copy and start the programm from. It must also run on windows.

    How can I learn coding?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 02:08 AM PDT

I don't know anything about coding but I want to learn. I've gone online to start learning but it still seems kinda complex coz they don't start from the basics they just go straight to libraries and objects and stuffs I know nothing about. Is there any advice to a learner like me who has zero knowledge about codes and languages and their terminologies. And is there any site I can learn or YouTube page. Thanks I will really appreciate it. Tryna get my life together and I guess I just have to move forward so decided to learn programming

Immediate / advanced C# course recommendations

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 05:39 AM PDT

I'm looking for some C# immediate / advanced courses. I suppose focussing on best practice and design patterns. But I'm guessing at that level the courses will be focused on a specific framework or staxj (e.g. .net core, asp.net etc.)

I've got 10 years professional experience using C# but alongside Unity (a game engine). I've had to use lots of external frameworks and I've been exposed to lots of .net but I worry haven't had the same learning experience as an exclusive .net developer.

So essentially I want to reaffirm best practices and ensure I'm writing high quality C# code.

Are there any courses out there that focus on this?

How do i get started making my own DAW

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 03:16 AM PDT

Right off the bat i have essentially zero knowledge on how to code (I've dabbled in python before and i learnt enough to make a very basic commandline calculator but i have zero knowledge beyond that (also im familiar with arduino programming but i feel like thats alot different than programming for applications)) so this is more of a general question of what things i should learn to make my own DAW. I am willing to invest the months or even years it would take to learn / code all of this since i don't really have anything to do right now (yaay quarrantine)

I've had this idea ever since quarantine began and I've even made extensive UI interface mockups for all the individual panels / devices as well as written comprehensive documentation on what functionality id like to add into it and how the whole daw will function which includes every little detail i could think of like how automation would be handled, how audio recording would be done, how audio / midi information will be represented, how files will be managed, how the user will import files from their own library down to how the animations would be handled and what philosophy the DAW would embrace, and so on. It basically goes something like this...

Essentially I want to create a daw similar to Ableton live 10 / bitwig studio but instead of the effects chain they use, I want to use a node based workflow similar to blender's compositor and material workflow while still adding a traditional effects chain that is offered by both daws. The user will be able to choose between the two similar to how blender lets you choose to use the nodes to do stuff vs just using the options provided. I want to make it free and open source for anyone to use and have it function with as much polish / usability as blender does. This means programming in the ability to have multiple workspaces, a node based workspace for effecting the incoming audio. Nodes / modules for the effects chain including a eq (like khs slice eq), dynamics plugin (like the khs dynamics plugin), a soft clipper (such as gclip), having extensive keyboard shortcuts similar to blender, having good trackpad and mouse support and so on.

This is a drastically shortened snippet of my entire layout / plan (because the documentation I've written is like 10 pages excluding images lmao) but it outlines what i want to go for

I'm very familiar with music production and how different effects alter / effect audio (for example I know a bitcrusher reduces the samples of the incoming audio and outputs it, a compressor automatically turns the volume down when a certain threshold is met based on a specific ratio and so on so really i just want to know what i should learn to make these myself.

And yes i know Ableton, Bitwig and Blender are made by an entire team and not just one girl but like i said i don't mind investing the time into it and I'm essentially doing it for fun.

Anywho I just want to know like a roadmap of things I should learn to make this DAW. Also i know that the questions on here are more specific and more coding or language related but i thought that you all would have better insight into this and could guide me through what stuff i need to get started learning but regardless thank you for helping me out or even spending the time to read this

Also I'm really sorry for any spelling mistakes / grammatical errors I made. English isn't my first language.

Also i tried posting this question on stack overflow but i cannot for the love of god figure out what title they want me to use because it keeps getting rejected.

Warning: Be very careful when using css variables in javascript.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2020 09:36 AM PDT

I´ve just spent about 2 hours trying to find out why this wasn't working:

     const primaryColor = getComputedStyle(document.documentElement) .getPropertyValue("--primary-color"); document.querySelector(".starting-color").value = primaryColor;

I´ve only found a solution when writing a stackoverflow question and saw that primaryColor had a white space before the #, for example instead of "#ffffff" it was " #ffffff".

All i had to do now is use .trim() like below and fixed fixed my issue.

    const primaryColor = getComputedStyle(document.documentElement) .getPropertyValue("--primary-color").trim();

Just trying to save someone else the headache of finding out that a css variables creates a white space at the start!

I srsly spent more than 2 hours trying to find out way... I love programming hahah

Hey guys! Its been a few months that I've treaded into programming and I love it. Right now I want to learn more about web development and be a full stack developer. I know it'll take both time and dedication, but I'm having trouble in getting started. What would be some great resources to learn online (preferably free)? There is such an abundance of lectures and videos that I am genuinely confused. In addition, what all tools and skills would I need to become a web developer? Thanks in advance!

    Help with networking and configuration

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 06:10 AM PDT

    Case to be solved.

A company that will open its doors soon has contacted me to resolve the following points:

    - The implementation of a network of 10 nodes is required, within which one of them will behave as a Server and the others as clients.

    - The Server will have the objective of performing massive information analysis, and they have heard in the technological market the concept of Big Data and want to explore it.

    - The nodes will be desktop machines that will be connected by means of a LAN network and that will provide information to the Server, where the information that will later be exploited by the Server will be concentrated.

    Define the hardware characteristics of:

    a) Desktop computers.

    b) Server.

    c) Type of network to be implemented (general characteristics).

    - The client is very interested in knowing the types of OS that each of the computers will work with(desktop and server machines).

    - Likewise, the owners of the Company require to know what type of Software: programs, programming languages, etc. will be used to carry out the exploitation of the information.

    - The choice of the chosen Provider will be based on:

    a) Quality in the proposal of your solution.

    b) Convincing the customer of their solution.

    c) Cost of implementation.

Can someone help me in general terms how can I do this. My concern is that the people on the company doesn't really now how to work with linux, and they think Big Data is something that you grab and just start messing with it

    Thanks for all the help!

Best way to make a GUI to enable searching through a data matrix? (e.g. showing rows matching a search)

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 05:55 AM PDT

I'm wanting to present a user interface for querying a matrix, e.g. the user searches for every row that has a value of 4 in column 3, and upon that search the GUI shows them every row meeting that requirement.

I can implement this functionality with Python+pandas no problem, but this seems very difficult to turn into a GUI since with different search queries there would be a different number of rows presented.

From researching the best options seem to be either R Shiny or the PyQt library...but I still have no idea how I'd implement this functionality in either of these libraries.

Are there any other good options where this would be easier to implement? Any ideas at all are appreciated

Making an On Demand Food Delivery Clone for a project, any guides?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2020 02:51 AM PDT

I'm making a food delivery app (DoorDash/Uber Eats clone)for a project and was wondering if there were any online guides I could follow because I am getting stuck in certain areas. Also was hoping to get some 'best designs' for certain designs.

Currently I'm working with Android + Firebase as I've worked with Firebase before and good in Java, eventually I would recreate it on iOS and Web. I could easily use Firebase to for these aswell but i want to learn more about industry standard practices.

So does anyone have any good guides/tutorials about on demand apps? Or specifically Uber Eats/Skip Dishes/DoorDash type clones? Or tips about a project like this in general?
