Posted: 03 Jun 2020 11:33 AM PDT I got a job offer as a web developer yesterday, but have mainly been studying IT (A+, Net+, CCNA, etc). They say they primarily will be using HTML, PHP, and CSS and work mainly through creation and registration of WordPress plugins. I have a probationary period where I am expected to demonstrate skill in these areas since they know that I have not really studied any of this. I'm just ecstatic for the opportunity. Posted: 03 Jun 2020 08:13 AM PDT I hope this type of post is allowed, but I apologize if it is outside of what this sub allows. I don't think it's specifically against the rules, but it is different than what most posts are on this sub. I have a simple idea to get links to videos and images from various sources and use the included metadata (or manually entered information) to plot the videos and images on a map across time. I actually had this idea years ago for another purpose, but I was reminded of it because of the recent protests in the US. This probably exists in some form on another site, but I could not find it yet. I have not done much web development or Cloud development in about 5 years and I would be slow to get started again. I can figure it out, but it would be extremely helpful if someone else was with me on this project. Even just choosing which storage tech (e.g. NOSQL vs SQL) or which frontend application framework is something that would take up a ton of my time since I don't have my own preferences yet. This project would benefit from getting done quicker, so that's why I'm reaching out for help with someone more experienced with webdev. [link] [comments]
Starting a free coding class for kids in my city, need advice. Posted: 02 Jun 2020 06:55 PM PDT I live in Annapolis, MD. I live in a community of less fortunate families. I want to make a real impact, not just post a black square on my instagram. I am going to start teaching kids the basics of coding for free. I work in IT and have access to spare laptops that I can use for the class. I have never taught before but I am excited to take it on. I am open ears to any advice on how I should approach this and outline the class. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]

Web developer job offer with no competition clause? Posted: 03 Jun 2020 11:04 AM PDT Been offered a new web dev role with a company but something caught my eye with a NDA document that I am required to sign if I want the job and it gave me pause. The verbiage seems, to me, that if I work at this new company and then leave, I can't work as a web developer for any other company for 24 months in a 50 mile radius which seems crazy to me? Also how are you to know who is in direct competition with the company? The legal mumbo jumbo in question is below. Is this standard stuff, cause I've never come across one like this in a long time? " No Competition. Employee agrees that during Employee's employment with the Company, and for a period of twentyfour (24) months thereafter, Employee will not directly or indirectly, on Employee's behalf or in conjunction with any other person, company, or entity, own (other than less than 5% ownership in a publicly traded company), manage, operate, or participate in the ownership, management, operation, or control of, or be employed by any entity which is in competition with the Company and operates within fifty (50) miles of the Company, with which Employee would hold a position with responsibilities similar to any position held with the Company during the twenty-four (24) months preceding the termination of Employee's employment with the Company or in which Employee would have responsibility for and access to confidential information similar or relevant to that which Employee had access to during the twenty-four (24) months preceding the termination of Employee's employment with the Company. Employee also agrees that any such opportunities discussed or requested by Company's clients during this period (including extensions to the current contract or any other potential new business opportunity) will be promptly referred to Company for follow-up." About to design my first portfolio in React. Best design practices/suggestions? Posted: 03 Jun 2020 09:32 AM PDT Hey, here's a question about designing a portfolio. I'm new to the career, just took a MERN stack bootcamp and will be seeking my first job as a web dev. I'm planning to build my portfolio with React, and I see there is a spectrum of component libraries. Some are styled more simply like vanilla reactstrap and others are highly stylized like the Bamburgh React Admin Dashboard, and everything in between. Is it a good idea to use components from the latter to create my portfolio, as its design is highly polished, or no? What are good design suggestions/practices for your portfolio? Got my first "client" need some help . Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:20 PM PDT Hello all! Existing news for me, but quite stressing as well as i am not sure if i am really prepared for this. I´ve contacted one friend that sells homemade vegan food through Instagram and is going quite well, and she accepted and was very excited as well about this. This will be a no charge thing, basically i just want the experience and have something online to show potential job applications. I´ve been learning for about 3 months and i know html css scss, javascript(not very deep to be honest..) and a bit of react. I am planning to build this using react, front end application only, with a basic contact form from netlify that i saw in a course i was taking. I am from UK she is from Brazil , is there any issues from her being from Brazil that would make using netlifly a bad option? Any sort of tips someone could give me ? I am really stressing about this as i dont feel completely ready for this, but at the same time i´ve built a few small landing pages etc using react and i might be able create something reliable. I dont understand anything yet about online security as well, but since i am not going to use any sort of back end this shouldn't be a big deal? Why react? I could just do this with basic html css javascript but i want to learn react, so why not? I plan to keep studying and probably improving the website as i learn new things. Thanks for all your support so far, im really excited and SCARED as well. Wish me luck [link] [comments]

Like Water: Developers for Black Lives Matter Posted: 03 Jun 2020 09:05 AM PDT Governments have been employing us to use facial recognition to erode the privacy of American citizens: using drivers license photos to turn our faces into forms of government identification, making the technical back ends for corrupt institutions. This isn't all bad, but it sure isn't all good; why don't we put our skills to good use? I, like many of you, have been comfortably working at home, uneffected by covid 19 and the protests. Besides casually posting on Instagram, I have not participated. We need to do better. I'm working to set up a community of activists who are technical professionals. We're just getting started, but with your help I think we can do something great. We're in the brainstorming phase, but some ideas include: -a wayze style app so that protesters can report incidents and communicate with each other as a unit -a system to make it easier to discover the identity of police officers and hold them accountable for their actions -a system to catalogue and archive police brutality, so that we can learn from our mistakes despite the short halflife of social media -or, any other ideas you or the public may have To do this WE NEED HELP. I need people -experienced in setting up a self sustaining technical community (git, organizational tools, etc.) -experience in app development -experienced in security, to keep users safe -experienced in DB management and infrastructure setup -experienced in AI and Machine learning My dream would to help create a self sustaining with a public social face. An institution that is by the people, and for the people. Please, If you're an experienced developer and you're interested, PM me. We are setting the bedrock as we speak. [link] [comments]

agency best practices for keeping track of assets like domains, domain records and webspaces Posted: 03 Jun 2020 05:16 AM PDT see title. i've only worked for small agencies before. their plans for keeping track of all those assets, webspaces, subscription plans were mostly just excel documents that were more or less up-to-date. hosting plans targeted at agencies/resellers do help, but they don't prevent the chaos that was sown in the past. every month or so, an ancient website project comes up where noone knows whether we still have it, control it, who pays for it, etcetera. then i'm usually required to shed some light with whois, creating text files in web roots and investigating virtual host entries which were left to rot after they're not needed anymore. so, my question is: how do larger/more organized agencies keep track of all that? as is usual, excel probably isn't the real answer to this. or is it? Anyone have experience with Product Recommendation Quizzes? Posted: 03 Jun 2020 03:49 PM PDT Hello everybody, I got a client that is looking for a score based product recommendation quiz that assigns answers to a product. Not sure how to start this from scratch. Anyone know of any frameworks online that I can piggy back off of? Thanks Here is an example of what I mean: https://www.drinktrade.com/onboarding/question/1 [link] [comments]
Biodling a backend for a gallery app of sorts Posted: 03 Jun 2020 03:22 PM PDT If there's a sub better fit for backend questions, please do tell. I'm trying to build an app, with Express, that'll pretty much be centered around images that are indexed by categories/subcategories. Cars is a good example, you can have images of cars and then index them by (manufacturer -> model (-> potentially other stuff)). What I'm struggling with is that I'm not sure how to go about storing the images and indexing/categorizing them in this way. Going with the car example, I'd need a way to have API endpoints for listing all manufacturers, then listing all models from a manufacturer, etc. (The images (or, an URL to them), being at the end of each category "tree"). I've looked at some Google Cloud services, but they don't really seem to offer a good way of indexing in this way. Any suggestions? Do I even need any third party service? [link] [comments]
Is it just me or is receiving pre-rendered assets for a build like trying to chase a rainbow? Posted: 03 Jun 2020 03:20 PM PDT Basically, title. I've only worked at two development jobs in my short four year career, but both demanded pixel perfect designs without providing any assets. Every time I start a build or work on a page with a new image, it's assumed I'm the one responsible to go into a sketch or Photoshop comp and extract, resize, center, crop, add my own gradients, convert, and finally optimize every single image. Does anyone actually work at a job where the designers export the assets for you? Am I crazy for thinking this should fall on someone else's shoulders? [link] [comments]
TillWhen - Just a Time Tracker Posted: 03 Jun 2020 03:19 PM PDT Wasn't planning on posting this right now since it's still in active development but going to try my luck anyways. I decided to build a simple time tracker app with projects and members in mind. It's free so you can go ahead and try it out. Wouldn't recommend a company wide usage right now but early adopters and curious humans are always welcome. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Jun 2020 03:12 PM PDT What's your favorite method for restful API calls within the browser? Jquery $ajax, axios, fetch, etc. What benefits do you see with your choice? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Jun 2020 11:26 AM PDT I have a project where a user makes changes to a page which displays a list of tasks which have been assigned to other users. When the user makes a change it sends the data to the REST API using either POST or PUT and if redux-saga completes the request successfully it inserts that data into the working list of tasks. This works quite well when only one person is working on that data, but I'd also like the page to update itself when external changes are made. For example - my project is a service that dispatchers couriers on tasks. When a rider has picked up or delivered an item, I want them to use their smartphone to press a button that send the current time to the server (time of pickup/delivery). At some point I want that change to be reflected on the coordinator's view (the person at home recording and assigning deliveries). I understand using a web socket is often recommended for this approach. I may have done myself a disservice by not using that approach in the first place, as everything is done using REST and redux-saga. I'm imaging it would take a lot of rewriting to make it work with a socket instead, unless it is worth making a socket that somehow only retrieves changes from external sources. I could do that if it needs to be done. However I don't know if it's necessary, because I'm not really aiming for real-time collaboration (like say google docs or monday does). It just needs to periodically refresh itself say every 10 seconds. This is what I've done so far: All tasks have a parent "session" object in the database. All tasks for the coordinator's current shift are associated with it. I added a field when retrieving details about the session called "tasks_etag" which sends a hash of all the tasks. Then my page makes a periodic call to this endpoint (every 10 seconds at the moment) and if the etag changes it triggers an attempt to refresh the data. If the coordinator is currently waiting on a request to send data to the server, it waits and delays the refresh by a few seconds before checking again. It should only retrieve data when no data is currently being sent (I might also disable controls while the refresh request is in progress, so that the coordinator has to wait a moment before changing anything). I've copied I think the most relevant piece of code here for what I have so far. The full file can also be seen here. SessionDetail.js createPostingSelector postingReducer: One problem with this approach is that I can't know where changes have come from, so when the coordinator makes a change to a task, it will inevitably come back with a changed etag and then pointlessly refresh everything. I want to know if there is some way I can avoid this happening, but I can't think of a good solution except maybe trying to calculate the hash on the client side at the same time. This seems expensive if there are a lot of tasks to hash and probably not reliable as some data that exists on the server (but isn't essential for operation) does not get inserted into the client side state. I also find that after sending lots of data to the server, I end up with multiple loops that are waiting for isTaskPosting to be false, but it never resolves, so my console gets spammed with messages that say it needs to do a check but isn't going to. Does anyone have advice about if I am approaching this problem in the right way? Should I be rethinking how I'm going to do this? Are there better ways or some differences I should be making? Thanks very much. [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Jun 2020 07:23 AM PDT Hi everyone - I recently inherited web content responsibilities due to severe lay offs at my company. Luckily I have 3rd party support to rely on for the heavy lifting and actual development but I'm completely out of my element. I apologize for the dumbest newbie questions, this is super embarrassing. Our AWS bill skyrocketed from $50 to $300/mo due to outbound data transfer and our support company says it's due to malicious bots dominating the resource load on the server. They said they've been attempting to block each of these bots subnet IP's as they come through but the last one required a total server reset to get things back online. What questions do I need to ask our support and/or AWS? I'm not sure what to do next to get this under control but we're a nonprofit and it's looking grim. Any help is SO appreciated. Working with recruiters for small contracts? Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:27 PM PDT Hey, been thinking lately about filling some of the 10ish hours I'm now saving not commuting with some small contract work to boost savings. I'm not particularly fond of or great at using channels like Craigslist to pick up and manage small gigs; wondering if anybody has any experience working with recruiters for that kind of part time short term contract work? Are there recruiters that deal in those types of contracts? Is it a waste of time to try? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Font Awesome Kickstarter - Reward Interpretation Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:19 PM PDT I've been using Font Awesome through the private npm registry in order to get the pro icons. This was included in $50 pledge that initially gave me Font Awesome Pro. They recently emailed about the end of the 1 year subscription, and an end to my access to the CDN and npm registry unless I start a subscription. Link to Kickstarter - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/232193852/font-awesome-5/ As a Pro backer, the wording below does not show the npm access to pro icons as a 1 year trial.
The 1 year term was for accessing the Pro CDN.
Based on what I originally funded, I'd fully expect to be able to use the pro npm packages without needing to use a subscription. Requiring a subscription to upgrade to version 6 makes sense, but npm access to version 5 pro was included in backing the Kickstarter. Am I being unreasonable in my thinking? I've built many projects that depend on the npm package and migrating them all would be a huge pain. [link] [comments] |
