Posted: 27 Jun 2020 01:29 AM PDT Hey! I graduated with a bachelor's in informatics a year ago and I'm now trying to become a junior front-end developer. I've been doing web development as a hobby for 2 years now and just created a portfolio to give a short introduction of me and my projects. I used React, Styled Components and Framer Motion to build it. I know some of you will think it's overkill to use React for a portfolio site but I wanted to try out Framer Motion and since I want to become a React developer I want to put it to use in as many cases as possible, because no matter how small or big the project you learn some new patterns every time. Here's the link: stevenjuks.me Let me know on what to improve or if you encounter any bugs or other weird behaviors. Thanks in advance :) [link] [comments]

Tried-and-true path to becoming a web developer come from an IT background Posted: 27 Jun 2020 03:08 PM PDT I'm new here so apologies if this is not the place to be asking such a question. So I have a background in IT working at the state level(current employment) and some graphic design experience as well. I've been using this time working from home to dig into courses and practice some of the web dev skills that I may be rusty on and add some new ones to my belt. Initially, I was doing it all out of order assuming I could take my limited js knowledge and jump directly into a framework like react, but that proved a mess and I have since reverted and I'm working through the course on Udemy suggested on this sub. I've got HTML and CSS down as well as simple CSS frameworks and some of the popular content management systems. I've done some web development on the side, but it was usually through something like WordPress. I wanted to see what you would recommend for someone who doesn't have a CS degree (originally I was pushed to go to law school so I have a BA in political science) but is looking to stay on track and enter the industry as a junior web developer or further. I'm not sure what exactly I should be focused on and what extent I should proceed before moving on. If anyone has any advice to steer me in the right direction and help me know when I should move on to the next topic I would appreciate it. My biggest concern is that I am not efficiently learning the skills I would need to enter this industry. Thank you in advance to anyone who can offer some advice. [link] [comments]

Customizable Reading Progress Bar for Websites/Blogs - HTML/CSS/JS Posted: 27 Jun 2020 05:54 AM PDT
Posted: 27 Jun 2020 12:50 PM PDT Hi! I am building a website which would store user info (name, email and passwords) and Im being super paranoid about GDPR. I tried googling my way to find more information about this but everything is super confusing. Since I do not own a company and there is no buying/selling anything on the site, should I even be worried about this? If so, can anyone point me in right direction on how to even implement this thing? [link] [comments]
[Showoff Saturday] My first Website - Convert-it Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:30 AM PDT My first project as I started to learn HTML/CSS/JS. Its pretty basic, I only know flex-box, just learned about grid. Is this OK for a first project? Looking at various posts here, I had initially presumed that everyone is leagues ahead of me. But I guess everyone has to start somewhere! This simple project taught me a lot more than any course could. Currently I am following The Odin Project and Free code camp's responsive website course. I am thinking of practicing by trying to clone websites. I will be thank full for any ideas-criticism-help ! [link] [comments]
First attempt at a portfolio - please critique! Posted: 27 Jun 2020 01:07 PM PDT So I've been studying web development as a side hobby for over 2 years now. There's been lots of intermittent weeks / months though where I've slacked and done nothing as life/work gets in the way and often I've been doubting whether I'll ever actually be able to get a job from this without a degree. Anyway, I found that focusing on building projects tends to make me focus a lot better and learn faster, rather than just watching tutorials. Please take a look at the first draft of my portfolio and the two projects inside and let me know what you think. I realise that since it's a static page, I probably should have used Gatsby, but at the time I started making the portfolio I had just gotten used to Create-React-App and so just went ahead with that. I'm pretty busy right now so figured I'd just post the portfolio and get feedback and then when I have more time, I'll optimise it and maybe convert it to use Gatsby. Eventually I'd love to be able to make some money from this, but I'm not sure what the best route to that is. I have some experience with the back-end as I did a part-time bootcamp, but I much prefer working with the front-end and would love to get in somewhere as a Junior Front-End dev. Even just making money through a site liked Fiverr or Upwork would give me great satisfaction and motivation, but I'm not sure i'm at that level yet. I tried to make the portfolio be eye-catching, hence the animations, full-screen background-images, light/dark mode, etc... But I'm not sure if they're just a distraction and worsen performance/user experience or if they look good. I compressed all my images as much as possible, but I'm sure there are other areas I could have optimised to improve performance too. Lazy Loading is another thing I have to look into, but just don't have time right now. I will also include a footer with links to my Github and socials when it's finished. Here's the link, please give overall impressions of the portfolio and the two projects inside! [link] [comments]
Need help with create post page, vetting posts, and listing posts Posted: 27 Jun 2020 04:48 PM PDT I'll preface all this by saying while I have a good grasp of OOP languages and have dipped my toes in HTML/CSS I'm quite new to hardcore webdev. I am really interested in learning more webdev and a project I thought would be really interesting is a classifieds service. I'm trying my hand at an MVP of a classifieds website like Craigslist but more focused on a specific category for sale. My first big chunk of work needs to be split into 4 functions
Research I've done already is how to create a page to post listings but most results on google are regarding API calls to post which isn't really what I'm looking for. I've also seen suggestions online to use open-source frameworks for classifieds but whatever I found has been deprecated and no longer exist. If there any new ones, those would probably be of great help to me. Where are some places I should start off on my search to develop this project? [link] [comments]
Posted: 27 Jun 2020 12:45 PM PDT I doesn't seem right to share this kind of project in the sub after seeing every Saturday hundreds of fun code snippets or personal projects which are free and even open source. I have myself posted personal projects which I enjoyed developing and just wanted to share with everyone. But I think projects like this are a world apart vs pet projects which we all normally show. I think more knowledge about building a brand / a successful service / or even just handling of actual users should me more transparent and not only come from world class companies like Facebook or Google (list non extensive). How to actually report errors and make sense of them and even do i18n for services which benefits from having more languages are things I would like have better guides to read on how to do them. I don't have any knowledge of the previous points and I'm just hacking my way into production trying to find the right way to do things. Given how large the web is it seems that information like this is very disperse and will take full time on its own to gather it and make sense of it. BackgroundAnyway... 4 years ago when I started learning web dev, I took a dive into React, NodeJS and WebSockets to create a local website to just click on button and start a server for my friends and I to play. Back then the Minecraft server hosting didn't seem as fancy as my tool so I dreamed of releasing it and earning money from it. Given I'm 23 maybe back then I didn't do my research correctly and likely this was already a thing. Fast forward to 2020 I have spend the last 2-3 months actually working on this project as much as pausing my actual for the last weeks. IncentivesMy service is about quickly getting a server online so you can play with your close friends when you all feel like it. My main gripe is that I don't like paying for things I don't use, so paying for a month of hosting when we will only be playing a few days each week felt like a waste of money. And the other issue is if we wanted to use a cheap one, connections and performance issues are usually part of the equation. But high quality ones tend to be expensive so we are back to square one. I have used DigitalOcean for years now and I saw they release some time ago servers with dedicated CPUs for intensive tasks like video encoding and machine learning. And I wanted to use them for playing technical mod packs with my friends. The problem is that the starting cost is $ 40 usd / month But I know I could only launch it those hours we will be playing. But by the time I have manually setup the server my friends would have lost a bit of the desire to play. So I created a pipeline to turn on the server, install everything needed, download the world and start the game. I attached it to websockets, created a website and vualá, you can do them with a single click and in 2 minutes you have the gang playing with blocks! Tech StackI have the service in 3 main components. Central: A main server which handles websockets, client api and worker api. Here I use Laravel with Laravel Websockets, Postgresql and Redis to control the other 2 main components. The client which sends and receives events from the Worker and the Worker which sends and receives events the Central pipes from the Client. The Central is also in charge of setting up the Worker via ssh. Client: The website runs as an SPA with SSR. It was build with VueJS, TailwindCSS and NuxtJS for SSR. It has a dark theme and while is not the best it has been extremely easy to implement by just using background opacity and text color inheritance. Given the simplicity of the page I'd say it goes along very well. Worker: A nodejs running typescript publishes a web server to handle income events provided by the Client through the Central. It is launched by the Central using DO API and waiting the server to be ready to interact. It will then connect via SSH and run a bash script to run a Docker image which gets the game data via environment variables. Result If you want to try the product send me a DM and I'll give you some coins to get a server running for a few hours. Thanks for visiting my post :) [link] [comments]
How good is freecodecamp.org as a learning material for a beginner? Posted: 27 Jun 2020 08:57 AM PDT I read the FAQs and saw freecodecamp.org listed as one of the resources for learning web development. I started using it just a while ago and finished the basic HTML part. It felt really short so I checked the lessons if there are more HTML in future lessons and there doesn't seem to be any. Should I be worried? I just started learning and I don't want to be switching learning materials in when I've invested more time in it. [link] [comments]

Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:59 AM PDT Hello, I want to create web and mobile app with the same backend in nodejs. If I used Azure, or any cloud provider, it would be cheaper than using Firebase. But in another hand, Firebase boosts the development required time and make it easier to finish the app compared to custom backend. Also, Firebase doesn't have some features that I need and scalability is a bit limited. So, Should I go for Firebase or my backend? With the knowledge that development time isn't important and also cost. Thank you for your help in advance 🙏 [link] [comments]

Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:41 AM PDT My friend and I have been working hard on developing a swiper porn web app, and we are calling it SwipeSpank. This is our first attempt at creating something from the ground up, so all feedback is welcome and appreciated. I've posted some of the technical details of the app below. Thank you all for looking, and have a fantastic Saturday! Technical Specs - Frontend: Ionic/React - Backend: Django + Gunicorn - DB: Postgres - Infra: - Deployed on AWS - Use an Ansible playbook to manage GitHub releases and AWS deployments - The frontend and backend are Dockerized - Nginx for the web server - Docker Compose to orchestrate the different services Goals - Introduce filtering - Introduce ability to save videos/intelligent swiping (would require user profile support) - Animated thumbnails! - Finish up the CI/CD part of our infrastructure - Move from standard Docker Compose to K8s infrastructure for increased ability to scale - More content, obviously - Set up non-intrusive ads since we need to support our infra costs [link] [comments]

Started first junior React job - AMA Posted: 27 Jun 2020 09:17 AM PDT 9 months ago I had never seen a line of js, two weeks ago I started my first job in the industry as a React frontend (in Israel). I feel like the gap between personal projects, online courses, endless and mindless medium articles and an actual first job is talked up too much and causes fear. So AMA if you have any questions [link] [comments] |
