https://inventwithpython.com/automateudemy (This link will automatically redirect you to the latest discount code.)

You can also click this link or manually enter the code: MAY2020FREE (on Monday the code changes to MAY2020FREE2)

    https://www.udemy.com/course/automate/?couponCode=MAY2020FREE

This promo code works until May 7th (I can't extend it past that). Sometimes it takes 30 minutes or so for the code to become active just after I create it, so if it doesn't work, go ahead and try again a while later.

Udemy has changed their coupon policies, and I'm now only allowed to make 3 coupon codes each month with several restrictions. Hence why each code only lasts 3 days. I won't be able to make codes after this period, but I will be making free codes next month. Meanwhile, the first 15 of the course's 50 videos are free on YouTube.

You can also purchase the course at a discount using my code MAY2020 or JUN2020 (or whatever month/year it is) or clicking https://inventwithpython.com/automateudemy to redirect to the latest discount code. I have to manually renew this each month (until I get that automation script done). And the cheapest I can offer the course is about $14 to $16. (Meanwhile, this lets Udemy undercut my discount by offering it for $12, which means I don't get the credit for referral signups. Blerg.)

    Frequently Asked Questions:

    • This course is for beginners and assumes no previous programming experience, but the second half is useful for experienced programmers who want to learn about various third-party Python modules.
    • If you don't have time to take the course now, that's fine. Signing up gives you lifetime access so you can work on it at your own pace.
    • This Udemy course covers roughly the same content as the 1st edition book (the book has a little bit more, but all the basics are covered in the online course), which you can read for free online at https://inventwithpython.com
    • The 2nd edition of Automate the Boring Stuff with Python is now available online: https://automatetheboringstuff.com/2e/
    • I do plan on updating the Udemy course for the second edition, but it'll take a while because I have other book projects I'm working on. Expect that update to happen in mid- or late-2020. If you sign up for this Udemy course, you'll get the updated content automatically once I finish it. It won't be a separate course.
    • It's totally fine to start on the first edition and then read the second edition later. I'll be writing a blog post to guide first edition readers to the parts of the second edition they should read.
    • I wrote a blog post to cover what's new in the second edition
    • You're not too old to learn to code. You don't need to be "good at math" to be good at coding.
    • Signing up is the first step. Actually finishing the course is the next. :) There are several ways to get/stay motivated. I suggest getting a "gym buddy" to learn with.

Free all-in-one roadmaps to help you learn React, Vue, Node, Android and more. [Cauldron Quarantine Challenges]

    Posted: 02 May 2020 12:02 AM PDT

Hi everyone, you might remember us from this post 6 months ago, where we received tons of feedback and hopefully helped some of you get better at Android Development.

That was the first time we launched anything public and since then we've grown Cauldron to be a recruitment tool used by companies like Fox and PicsArt.

Because today most people are stuck at home in lock-down, we're coming back with 7 (for now) new "free all-in-one roadmaps" that we call Challenges. In these challenges you'll find:

    • The tech stack (breakdown on key skills)
    • Links to the best learning resources on the web
    • A main challenge assignment you can complete for your portfolio :)
    • Currently we are covering Web Dev w/ React or Vue, Backend w/ Node or PHP, Mobile w/ React Native or Kotlin and a cheeky Python ML challenge. (iOS w/ Swift is coming next)

This time we've brought in experts from each field to curate the learning material and the tasks that are included in the challenge. And we're try to have them look through and give feedback to all submitted/saved tasks on the site.

P.S. Based on the feedback from last time we're engaging the community to help us iterate and make everything better. You'll find options to suggest changes, request a specific stack to be covered or even create your very own challenges.

Jump in and let us know what you think!

Help my single-dad friend - details inside

    Posted: 01 May 2020 09:11 PM PDT

My best friend is a great guy, and a greater dad. Unfortunately his wife left him a year ago, and he's stuck raising his three daughters alone.

He and I started learning to code a year ago, but with all the personal stuff he's dealt with he basically completely lost the energy to do it. He's better now, but he feels stuck. He thinks he may have to get a second job to support his kids in daycare, he's at a job he hates, he doesn't make enough - and he wants a change.

What guidance/resources are out there that maybe we don't know about? We've done freecodecamp, which was great. But not enough.

Is there anyone out there who could connect with him? I think what he lacks is a community.

Project ideas for applying for jobs

    Posted: 01 May 2020 11:42 PM PDT

I'm on my first job as a software engineer for 7 months already. I got lucky for getting a job when the project I put on my CV is my final year project and college assignment. I almost never done any personal projects before. I'm currently working using Rails, React, and React Native.

My company isnt stable due to the pandemic and I might need to apply for jobs. I don't know what field/technology I want to work with in my next job but I'm sure I don't like webdev, I just accept this job because I can't get better jobs

This pandemic renders me unprepared as I do very little self study while working all these 7 months :s maybe I would be in webdev again if I have no more choice

I want to make personal projects but I'm confused of what would impress the interviewer or what project is considered good enough to be put on my resume

    Currently I have 2 ideas:

    1. Recipes storing mobile application. Im confused on what to cook sometimes and forgot about the recipes i learnt from youtube because i didnt type the steps. I also need to filter the recipes i know based on the ingredients I've left in my fridge

    2. Game using unreal engine but still unsure about the theme

What I want to know is if the project is common or already thought by a lot of people is it ok? Because i think i can find an app similar to my first idea and im afraid the interviewer will think its boring and basic. Should a project have more than 10k lines to be considered good?

    Thank you

    Studying vs Programming

    Posted: 01 May 2020 07:11 PM PDT

How much time do you guys actually study/learn compared to programming? I want to learn more about different technologies and how they interact in general, but I feel like when I'm programming the details are too technical for any widespread learning. That is why I am also wondering how much time you guys spend learning about general computer science compared to programming and getting into the nitty gritty details.

Software engineers: what do you do on a daily basis?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 09:11 PM PDT

Hi! Im in my first semester of college and just trying to figure out what I want to do when I graduate. Software engineering is whats peaked my interest the most so I went on youtube and searched the same question I asked in the title. Every single video is "hey, look at me wake up at 4 am, now watch me eat breakfast, snacks, lunch, more snacks and now I go home! Its so easy!".

I want to know what kind of issues you guys actually have to deal with. Whats the normal day like without all the bullshit? Also, i'm just getting a 2 year IT degree right now, would it be better to go for a computer science degree, or try to get this job when I graduate? Thanks :)

p.s i can provide more info on the degree if I was too vague

Please give me some more playlists about more topics, any topic. And please also point me towards some mini project tutorials of machine learning I've never done a machine learning project, so I thought it would be helpful to watch a video of some first. And can someone also give some project ideas to me? Just guide me please! Thanks!

    Understanding Sedgewick's math

    Posted: 02 May 2020 01:14 AM PDT

On page 247, Sedgewick and Wayne says the lower bound of merge sort is expressed by the term C(N) >= C([N/2]) + C([N/2]) + [N/2] where N is a power of 2 say 2n. First, since [N/2⎦ = ⎡N/2⎤ = 2n-1, we have:

    Step 1: C(2n) = 2C(2n-1) + 2n

    This is clear, then...

    Dividing both sides by 2n

    Step 2: C(2n) / 2n = C(2n-1) / 2n-1 + 1

I'm confused how we got the middle term to C(2n-1) / 2n-1 in step 2

    I know 1 / xn = xn-1

Not sure what else I'm missing

How to study with online courses?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 01:38 PM PDT

I just finished my first year in CS at my school and I want to learn more over summer through online courses (from websites like Udemy and whatnot). I haven't done any online CS courses (except midway through the current semester) and I just don't know how I can go about this in an effective way. Do you guys take notes along the video? Do you write code along with the instructors? Any tips on how I can properly study off of these courses would be great!

    Tips for a new programmer?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 08:25 PM PDT

    Hey guys!

So I'm currently a first year college student (and CS major) who just finished up my first Computer Science class with an A. The language we focused on in class was Java, and I really enjoyed it, but I also really struggled and had to work super hard for my grade.

I was just wondering what sources you guys would recommend for somebody who wants to continue strengthening their Java programming skills? (besides this subreddit of course :P). I'm enrolled in Computer Science II for next semester, and apparently the professor makes the class super hard, so I just wanna be prepared.

I'm making a project website. I want to use the NHTSA api to populate drop downs, year make model. Do things such as store selected information. Recall information, and possibly more.

I've seen a person on YT doing a codecademy course for NHTSA api but wanted to see if there are any better options (free preferred but if I pay, at least pay for the better or more worthwhile course)

Thanks in advance, I read post under api search and disnt find any specific resources.

    Computer Graphics or Computer Vision?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 08:01 PM PDT

Hello, I am currently doing a project where I have to make a person "wear clothes of different color" , which I think boils down to mapping texture to a 3D model ( correct me if I'm wrong ).

The thing is I only have little knowledge of computer graphics, so should I follow a course on the way and then learn how to do it or should I just google and try and try until I get what I want, learning along the way?

Also any and all resources related to this topic would be highly useful to me. Thank you!

ERROR: List indices must be integers, not str

    Posted: 01 May 2020 11:24 PM PDT

    #PYTHON 3

This is my small python code. I'm getting error at line 10.

    tc=int(input('No of test cases:')) times=0 while times!=tc: array=input('Enter the array') count=0 seplist=list() array=array.split() index=1 for index in array: if array[index]-array[index-1]<=2: count=count+1 else: seplist.append(count) count=0 print(min(seplist),max(seplist))

I want to start the for loop from second element of the list so that I can easily apply if conditions.

I got some error which I'm unable to resolve even after googling.

Traceback (most recent call last): File "covidspread.py", line 10, in <module> if array[index]-array[index-1]<=2: TypeError: list indices must be integers or slices, not str

    What I'm missing here?

Help with copying linked list C++

    Posted: 01 May 2020 11:08 PM PDT

    template<typename Type> List<Type>::List(const List<Type>& other) { Node* p; p = other.head; while (p != nullptr) { push_back(p->item); p = p->next; } } template<typename Type> void List<Type>::print() const { Node* p; p = head; while (p != nullptr) { if (p->next == nullptr) { std::cout << p->item << std::endl; return; } std::cout << p->item << " "; p = p->next; } } template<typename Type> void List<Type>::push_front(const Type &item) { if (head == nullptr) { Node* p; p = new Node(item, nullptr, head); head = p; tail = p; } else { Node* p; p = new Node(item, nullptr, head); head = p; } num_nodes++; } template<typename Type> void List<Type>::push_back(const Type &item) { if (head == nullptr) { push_front(item); } else { Node* p; p = new Node(item, tail, nullptr); tail->next = p; tail = p; } num_nodes++; }

I've got the push_back and push_front functions to work, but when I try to use them in my copy constructor and print, I get garbage values. I think it's a problem with head but I can't figure out what exactly is wrong.

Edit: So I tried making head and tail equal to nullptr and that seems to fix it, but idk why.

Rethinking my career and risking new things

    Posted: 01 May 2020 11:07 PM PDT

    Hello everybody,

I would like to share my life with you and if possible I would like you to help me understand some things in relation to programming and game development.

I have a degree in publicity and advertising, which is an area I never had a great affinity with and working with it has always caused me frustration. I have been working with digital marketing for 4 years and I was fired from another job after a long year of a lot of stress and disappointments. This made me deeply rethink my life and I came to the conclusion that I am not on the right path.

As I have always played video games all my life, naturally I developed a strong interest in working in this area, and what always blocked me was the fear of not being able to learn to program. However, taking advantage of the time I have now during quarantine, I bought a highly recommended Unity 3d course and I feel that I am managing to understand and evolve faster than I imagined.

In my last job, I was responsible for taking care of 10 digital marketing accounts, managing at least 5 channels with many campaigns within them, which was still a complex job that requires a lot of attention and care, in addition to good memory, because things happen in real time in that area. It made me think: well, if I am able to take care of so many accounts, with so many details and have it all in my head to present it to customers, why would I not be able to learn to program?

Unfortunately, life is not like a movie where everything happens like magic. I am very anxious and stressed about this decision, as I may be failing to accept good job opportunities and continue my career to dive into a new universe where I have no guidance and support from teachers / professionals, and no prior knowledge. I turn 30 in two months and I feel like I don't have time to make the wrong decisions.

What do you, who work in this area and already have some experience, think about my situation and what advice would you give me?

PS: i'm really sorry if this cannot be posted here in this community!

Whats a good Udemy Course to go along with the Odin Project?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 07:15 PM PDT

So just some background beforehand. I finished Angela Yu's web bootcamp yesterday and I'm able to grasp the material decently and I'm starting the Odin Project in 2 weeks so that I have time to study for my APCSA(CS 101 equivalent for anyone confused) exam and other AP exams.

I'm also learning data structures and algorithms on Coursera by robert sedgewick and want to specialize in backend since my design in frontend is eh and I already have previous programming experience.

So could anyone reccomend me a Udemy course with these details?

    Making GUI programs in Java

    Posted: 01 May 2020 10:59 PM PDT

    Hello!
I have recently learned java and i wanted to start learning GUI app creation. A quick google told me that I should use JavaFX. But is it worth to learn JavaFX? Is it really the best way? JavaFX does not seem to be a part of Java anymore but is developed separately (OpenJFX). I was not able to find any good answer.

Or is there any other way to make GUI apps? I know C++, HTML/CSS/JavaScript. Someone said I can use HTML/CSS/JavaScript with Java to make GUI apps. I don't know how to do any of that. Can anyone please give me an answer. If you also happen to know any resources on learning any of this, please let me know. I did not find any resources in the subreddit FAQ.

Forgive me if i have made any mistake, i am fairly new to all of this.
