With all the talk about ADA lawsuits, how do you ensure compliance?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 09:48 PM PDT

Hi, throwaway as this is a work related matter.

Our general counsel has made it a top priority to ensure that we make an effort to complying with the american's with disability act on our public facing web properties due to all of the talk around lawsuits.

Before jumping into this I'd like to hear any experiences that you've had or tools that you recommend, as it's my first time dealing with accessbility.

    Thanks.

Trying to build my first, very simple API. I feel overwhelmed and lost. Please help. (x-post /r/dotnet)

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 03:00 PM PDT

I think I've got the hang of routing, models, controllers, and how ActionResult works. But the Todo List API tutorial is not enough, and it seems to be the only up-to-date learning resource. The docs for C# are excellent. I expected the same quality from the ASP.NET Core docs. The Microsoft Learn "interactive" tutorial and the video playlist are even worse: "Just copy and paste this mess to the sandbox CLI and voilá, you have an API!" or "In Visual Studio™, right click this, click here.. done!"

    • How should I structure my project? All the info I find about project structure seems to assume you're building a huge enterprise application. So many options and buzzwords everyone seems to assume I know.

    • When and how should I build my DTOs? The tutorial glosses over them, gives me some boilerplate to copy and paste, and that's it. Not a single mention of DTOs in the rest of the ASP.NET Core 3 docs.

    • Should I still use DTOs if my models don't hold any secret data?

What about repositories? I've seen comments calling it an essential pattern and an antipattern. Who should I believe?

    • How much EFCore should I learn before working on the API? It seems huge and intimidating compared to something like SQL-Alchemy.

    • Should I still worry about security (besides CORS) if it's a private API that only my own client site will use?

    • Am I better off using something like Flask or Node for my first API?

    Deciding between front-end and back-end

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 07:35 PM PDT

    Straight to it:

I have 4 months to learn web dev from scratch (I know some python), and I want to be able to build a small side project as well. Which one in general is quicker to learn, front-end (HTML,CSS,JS,angular and react) or back-end (python, ruby, mongobd, and any other associated languages)? In general, which would be easier to get a first internship in? Also, is it common for people to switch between back-end/front-end/fullstack in between jobs/internships? Any answers/advice are greatly appreciated

Google Colab is telling me that a path to a video input is not set when it clearly is set correctly

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 07:30 PM PDT

I am using google colab GPU to run an open source vehicle counting system on the darknet/yolov3 framework. I was able to get yolov3 running perfectly for video object detection. I cannot get this second repository to run and I think it is a google colab issue because I am new to it. Ivy-master and darknet-master are cloned under content, I also tried saving these in drive but it did not make a difference.

I have my .env file set up as vars.env and installed the colab-env. When I run !python -m main in colab, I get the error Path to video or camera input not set. My variable in my vars.env file looks like so: VIDEO="./content/vehiclesystem/data/demodata/videos/sample.mp4". The path is correct, so why is colab telling me the path is not set? I have tried asking owner for help but no luck.

Looking for a javascript framework for getting form data.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 07:30 PM PDT

I'm about to start a project where users will be filling out form data and it will need to be processed (some math, calculations, etc) and then sent to us. I'll probably store it in a database (somewhere in Office 365/Sharepoint Online would be ideal too). I'd prefer it to be static pages on shared hosting. I've done a lot of html/php/css/javascript over the years. LOTS of codeigniter but I'm trying to get away from that. I recently did a small project in Vue and really enjoyed it. I'm currently going through the Javascript course on pluralsite in an effort to get a better understanding of its more advanced fundamentals. This makes me lean toward wanting to doing this site with a javascript framework.

My question is would there be a javascript framework ideal for this project? I also thought about Nuxt and having it build the static pages. What would you recommend, especially for someone really trying to dig deep into learning more about javascript?

How to move on from WP/CMS ad agency?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 11:41 AM PDT

I currently work at an agency, which I enjoy working with clients and customer facing sites. However, I seem to get passed over after interviews since it's primarily all WP and other CMS's.

What skills should I focus on outside of work to help bolster my resume? Are there other industries I could target besides CMS/WP shops?

I can add it if requested, but I've been working on React primarily in my personal time. My main issue is I don't have work experience with it, so I tend to get overlooked in that aspect.

    Struggling To Start Freelancing

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 07:47 AM PDT

    Hey Devs

So I am trying to start freelancing and to begin I want to build my portfolio up with a couple of well designed websites that will eventually go on my website.

However, I am struggling to find clients accepting of what I have to offer. I have messaged so many soletraders and small businesses around me, asking them if they want a free logo with no catch and then a potential free website design too. Then they never reply. I login to a different account of mine and message them about their services and they message instantly. As soon as I bring up anything about helping their business I am ignored.

I understand the saying "Never work for free" but I am not after money right away. I just want to have someone be happy with what I make them.

What can I do to try and find someone willing to take a chance on me, I also clearly state in my message if they aren't a fan of what I create they don't have to use it and we can go our separate ways.

I have thought about another idea where I just create them a logo and send it to them and try and get some conversation going that way.

    What do you guys think?

Best CMS for hosting with limited configuration?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 02:39 PM PDT

    Hello everyone! 👋

This is a bit of a tough one for me. I am trying to find a CMS that can be installed on a free hosting provider with limited capabilities. I've looked at a lot of information online and the more I research it, the more confused I become. I have listed the information ans opinions I was able to find below.

I would like to create a small & simple but clean looking online portfolio of my creative work (illustration), together with a contact page and a few other simple pages. It would have to look good on both mobile and desktop. It also needs to be easy to install and manage in order to be able to add pages with text + images with ease.

    Wordpress would have been nice.
As one exemple, I quite like the look and feel of this portfolio which is running on Wordpress: http://bantjes.com/work/category/portfolio/

But the opinion of some users online is that the limitations of the free hosting (such as the memory (64 MB), the limited number of sessions and the PHP version) are not sufficient for Wordpress.
They are quite behind when it comes to PHP which is maybe the biggest issue.
If that's incorrect, I am open to other diverging opinions. :)

A semi-official support ticket states that it is possible to use Wordpress 4.2.x, 4.1.x, 4.0.x, 3.9.x, 3.8.x, 3.7.x BUT it requires a few hacks (mostly to reduce the PHP memory usage and to avoid certain plugins that aren't compatible).

The right CMS would need to fit the following requirements:

    PHP Version 5.6.34
    System: Distribution Linux 64bits
    Apache : 2.2.x
    PHP: 4.4.3 / 5.1.3rc4 / PHP 5.6 (beta) / PHP 7 (very limited alpha)
MySQL : 5.0.83 / MyISAM storage engine (no InnoDB)
PHP ⟷ MySQL link: mysql (no mysqli or PDO, except with PHP 5.6)
    PhpMyAdmin : 3.1.5 (client MySQL 5.1.61)
    PostgreSQL: 9.1.2

Maximum execution time of a PHP script is 20 seconds
Maximum time to receive a PHP or SQL request is 60 seconds
Maximum memory for executing a script is 32 MB (64 MB if using PHP 5.6.x)
Maximum size of a POST request is 2 MB
Maximum size for sending a file to the server is 2 MB
Safe mode is active (with the exception of PHP 5.6.x)
Maximum number of SQL queries, at the same millisecond, for the same account, is 1

The hosting provider doesn't allow a number of lightweight CMS or extensions (also known as plugins / add-ons / components / plugins…) from CMS that do not use an SQL database. It does not allow these to store information in text files of type TXT, XML, PHP, LOG, HTML, SQLite… without using MySQL or PostgreSQL databases.
The hosting provider states that it is imperative to avoid using them on their servers, otherwise the hosting could be suspended.

So it could be that a lot of SQL-free options might not be allowed?

It also advises to avoid using tools or modules that can generate excessive SQL requests or significant disk access.

The maximum data volume (FTP space + SQL databases) is 10 GB, but sites that comply with the rules for using the service can use more space without risking suspension.

    Thanks 🙏

Trying to put all mapped objects into a single array

Trying to put all mapped objects into a single array

    Hey Redditors,

As the title suggests I am trying to put all the objects that I mapped into a single array. The problem is if I keep the arrayIt() within the map function (as shown in figure below) they produce individual arrays packed with their own objects due to the map. But if I keep the arrayIt() outside the map() only the last object gets saved in the array because they are overwritten repeatedly due to map().

    https://preview.redd.it/delntpe6wuv41.png?width=1065&format=png&auto=webp&s=90913eb1f596b20aa9eb03f8b662e215cec4ae72

     coordinateValues = () => { let data; this.props.provinceNames.map((e) => { data = { date: e.Date, totalCases: e.Cases }; // Function for putting mapped objects into an array const arrayIt = function (...array) { console.log(array); }; arrayIt(data); }); this.setState({ xAndYValue: data, }); };

How can I do it so that all the objects get saved into one array?

Thank you very much for your help! Stay safe & happy coding...

Any recommendations for a simple CMS for an already existing static site?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 06:14 PM PDT

I want to add a blog page to a site I've already built in vanilla HTML/CSS/JS. All pages are static and hosted on Github pages. No backend currently. I'd like to add a blog page, but have an actual CMS that populates the blog. I'd be able to go to [XYZ].com and write the blog posts in rich text, and my static site would ping an API to get that content formatted correctly.

I hate Wordpress and I'm looking for a really bare-bones solution that makes managing blog posts easier than having literal HTML pages per post.

Thank you for any and all advice/recommendations!

How can I ensure a screen reader doesn't read the entire nav menu each time a page loads?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 09:26 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I have an accessibility question. I'm working on a site that needs to become WCAG compliant, and one of the feedback items we recently got was that when a user opens a page, the screen readers announces the entire navigation menu. I was wondering if there's any way to prevent this from occurring. The nav menu is a list of some top level links that have a dropdown which is opened whenever a user hovers or tabs over one. I've done a bit of reading and it seems that the aria-haspopup and/or aria-expanded attributes may be what I'm looking for. Is this correct?

Tips for writing better HTML/CSS ?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 09:23 AM PDT

At this point I feel competent enough to take any design and code it to spec, but I feel like the way I implement CSS is just kind of knocking things into place bit by bit.

I'd like to get better at structuring CSS to more efficiently utilize classes, selectors, variables etc, and also figure out how to better take advantage of different HTML tags instead of using divs for everything.

    Thanks

How does your PHP development environment setup look like?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 09:56 AM PDT

I'm not familiar with PHP development, I usually work with Node. The few times I do need to code PHP I resort to live-editing files on my server, which is really really bad.

But I'll be honest I have absolutely no clue where to start with setting up a local development environment for PHP, I've been googling all over and every single thing I found seems to suggest I install an entire LAMP stack on my machine which seems overkill.

I know I can remotely connect to Mysql using ssh from terminal, so that's an easy solution,

But do I really need apache installed on my local machine to also have PHP?

If I run `sudo apt install php`, Ubuntu also asks me to install Apache and a lot of other dependencies. Is it okay to just install php on its own? If I do that, will things like Wordpress or other CMS built in PHP work or do I need to mimic a LAMP stack to get those to function properly?

Is Docker a worthwhile solution? Is it very resource heavy compared to Node?

Could I ideally mix Docker together with Webpack to build my JS and optimize everything it for production?

I would love to hear about more experienced PHP developer's experiences. I'm currently trying to modernize a very 'old' setup without reinventing the wheel.

I do know of stuff like Xammp, I've had trouble with compatibility while using it before but if that's the only option I'll go for it. I'm that desperate.

I'm a big fan of managing stuff from the CLI, so anything using that is big plus, especially since it would allow me to automate it with shell scripts.

Currently developing on Linux (Ubuntu to be precise).
