What are your tips for polishing your game? Posted: 30 Apr 2020 07:05 AM PDT Hello, I find that I am pretty fast at the prototyping and first 90 percent of game creation, but I end up rushing towards the end to finish and end up with a product that is slightly less good than I would like sometimes. Does anybody have any tips on keeping focused on polish even when sometimes it almost seems like nothing is changing? [link] [comments]

What makes a movement system satisfying to pilot? Posted: 30 Apr 2020 07:55 AM PDT Many games feature player avatars navigating their environments, and entire sub genres are devoted to different movement mechanisms and expressions in space and exploring the challenges that can pose. These can range from platformers to racing simulators, from 2D to 3D, but what matters is the player experience- what leads to the most satisfaction, what feels most rewarding to use? What have been your favorite movement systems? [link] [comments]

Want to get to game development Posted: 30 Apr 2020 12:06 PM PDT Hello, I'm a high school student who's about to enter his senior year and I need help with deciding what classes to take (I've taken AP computer science principals and am going to AP computer science A but I'm also on the fence about AP chemistry?) Okay, I made my first game! But... now what? Posted: 30 Apr 2020 02:50 PM PDT I have finally gotten to the point where many of us dream to get to. I made a little game. It's a web music game and it's not very big but I'm proud of it. I made a website and a logo for it. But now I'm out of my depth. I thought when I started that I'd throw a Google Adsense ad on it an call it a day, but to Adsense my website is just a canvas and a short description with "no valuable content" so they've rejected me along with the other reputable networks. Looks like all that's available to me without 500k visitors a month is scummy popups or affiliate links? And those affiliate links will also be shut down unless I sell 3 things in 3 months. Also I have no idea how to tell people it exists. Should I be buying advertising? Should I be trying to get it included in a larger game-aggregator site like ArmorGames? What do they ask for in return? I don't expect to make significant money off of it of course but it would be nice to at least pay for hosting and make me feel like someone is looking at my baby! Would love some advice from anyone who's made it to this stage before. Thanks all. [link] [comments]
Glew not linking to visual studio 2019 Posted: 30 Apr 2020 02:02 PM PDT Hey everyone, I have been trying to get my new laptop set up for OpenGL programming. I have visual studio 2019 currently as my ide. I am trying to just set up glew and glfw and run a basic window program. Got the include files working and can include the headers, I set up an external libraries folder with the glew and glfw contents and put the paths to the lib files for each under additional directories. The glfw seems to be working, but i am getting unresolved external linker errors on the glew commands when i try to build. I also added the .lib files to the additional dependencies in the linker settings. And i added the glew.dll in my project folder. I have done this successfully on my old machine but cant seem to figure out what I am doing wrong here. Any suggestions would be great. [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Apr 2020 07:11 AM PDT Hi guys, I'm prepping to release a demo of my game, and it's time for my least favorite part of this whole process: marketing and the trailer. The game is essentially a twin stick shooter, inspired by nuclear throne, but with added features like itemization and more diverse classes. One of the highlights of the game is going to be the leaderboard system which prominently displays the names of the best players in game. My steam page goes into detail about game intricacies and stuff, but I wonder if my trailer is too lacking of info. I don't mention the leaderboards or the classes much, hoping the video instead highlights gameplay. Is this the wrong move? Too wordy = bad, right? There is the trailer. There is no existing store page so hopefully this doesn't get flagged as self promotion. I'm just looking for some kind of specific advice! Thanks! [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Apr 2020 11:25 AM PDT So this semester we started learning unity. I am very familiar with many programming languages and many theoretical concepts of programming. But when it comes to developing any game, mind you not level design or such, I mean just turning a idea into a game is very very hard to do. There are certain functionalities in the game that I want to add, and I end up adding them but they are clunky and have many edge cases. I have seen many gamedevs on Youtube make crazy games within days. I know I can't compare myself to people who have years of experience. But at the same time I feel like I am missing some crucial knowledge or idea. My biggest problem or weakness is game logic, because anytime I code any game logic there are many edge cases where they just don't work. [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Apr 2020 01:04 PM PDT I'm graduating HS this coming month. I'm on the fence between going to a college to get a BA in game design and self teaching through websites like Udemy and SkillShare. I've heard that a strong portfolio can mean a lot in this industry. I also realize how much more expensive college is alongside the fact that the first 2 to 4 years isn't even game design related. What do you guys think? [link] [comments]
