Is possible/ practical to build websites without a CMS? Posted: 12 Mar 2020 04:46 PM PDT I don't often come to this sub so if this question is stupid or doesn't belong here I'm sorry about that. I've been designing websites by making custom Wordpress themes for a few months now and while I enjoy the process of building websites I really don't like using Wordpress. Im fairly adept when it comes to the php required for plugins such as advanced custom fields and custom post types but I feel like I could replicate them and any other Wordpress feature using plain php. I'd like to make websites using nothing but php and no cms at all. Is this a thing people do? If so what are the things I need to take into account? [link] [comments]
Any recommendations for a gallery script? Posted: 12 Mar 2020 04:41 PM PDT I am looking for a gallery script (PHP and/or javascript) which will produce a lightbox with images sized to fit nicely on a page (similar to Google's image search), preferably with text overlays. Ideally with nothing more! I've tried Google (and Duckduckgo) and seen stripped down content management systems, object examples of horrible coding practice, plugins depending on complex ecosystems and lots of ugly implementations. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]
When using REM, is it better to have a 16px base font size over a 10px base font size? Posted: 12 Mar 2020 05:14 AM PDT Personally I would have assumed 10px is better because mentally converting px to rem is just dividing by 10 and therefore easier. However, many frameworks appear to use a 16px size. What is the reason for this? [link] [comments]

How does this website achieve this type of scroll Posted: 12 Mar 2020 09:09 AM PDT Hello, I always wondered sites like this one https://www.wecargo.be/ , how do they achieve this scroll animation on scroll ? I have tried Scrollbar JS but it isn't even close and I can't really find anything else. Thanks ! [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Mar 2020 03:01 PM PDT Hey all, I made a php login/ registration page that connects to a MySQL database and verifies user logins. Once the user logs in they get redirected to my online chat page. The chat is fully functional right now and multiple users can use it. I want to add a Users Online/ Users Offline feature to that chat page. I know two tools at my disposal are COOKIES and SESSIONS. SESSIONS is what I used for user verification but the way I have things setup, unless the user hits "Log out", they stay logged in. I wanted it this way so you don't need to login every time. Can I use a cookie with a timer to keep checking if the user is currently logged on/ the chat site is open on the browser. Any advice on how to tackle this would be appreciated. Which development stack for marketing/non-SPA websites? Posted: 12 Mar 2020 04:43 AM PDT So here's the deal: I work at a digital agency and we build websites with Wordpress. We either get a theme from ThemeForest or develop it from scratch, depending on the client's need and budget. I thought about using React to render data from an API (maybe Wordpress API) but then I found this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/reactjs/comments/4n27qm/makes_sense_to_use_react_in_non_spaweb/ and I do think that the top comment does have a point so this is also not an option. My question is: What is the 2020 way of building marketing websites that:

A few questions about memory and local storage in Javascript Posted: 12 Mar 2020 02:14 PM PDT Hi So whats up with JS stack & heap concept ? Now for anyone who has used RxJs, there is something called Subject, which is a type of observable that you can also publish data to. This holds a bit of state. pretty please and thank you, any clarification would be grand ! [link] [comments]
localhost server slows down computer Posted: 12 Mar 2020 02:01 PM PDT I have the localhost server running all the time. Keep forgetting to put it off after i am done coding the project for the day. But when i type localhost://8888(localhost for the api) in the browser and then it displays what i have attached to the server thats when the computer slows down. The mouse moves slowly, internet pages take a while to open. Is there something i am doing that am i not supposed to be doing? How do i fix this? Reading up on web development in this reddit there is something i have noticed. Its like the practice is to fine tune my code in a way that shaves down response times. Like is there something i am supposed to attach to fetching data from the api that does not slow it down? I dont know how to put this into words cause i am not familiar with the terminology [link] [comments]
How do you selectively pull from github? Posted: 12 Mar 2020 01:59 PM PDT I am trying to pull just the "src" from Sarah Drasner's https://github.com/sdras/cssgridgenerator.git

Open Exchange Rates Data Breach Posted: 12 Mar 2020 01:38 PM PDT Just received this mail: What Happened On Monday 2 March 2020, we received reports that requests to our API were taking longer than usual to receive a response, resulting in timeouts for a number of users. Upon investigation, we determined that this was the result of a network misconfiguration. Although many API responses during this time were still being successfully served, some users further reported that exchange rates in their API responses appeared to have ceased updating throughout the morning. While correcting the underlying network issue, we identified that changes had been made to our AWS environment by an unauthorised user account. We immediately shut off access to this user and worked to restore full operation to our platform, and the issues were corrected by 15:00 GMT. After the incident had been contained, we immediately began working to establish the cause and extent of the unauthorised access, alongside specialised IT security consultants. Upon further examination, we determined that the unauthorised user appeared to have initially gained access on 9 February 2020, and could have gained access to a database in which we store user data. Whilst our investigations are ongoing, we have also found evidence indicating that information contained in this database is likely to have been extracted from our network. What Information Was Involved There is no evidence to suggest that information relating to you was specifically targeted during the incident. However, our investigations have found that some of your information is contained in this database and therefore would have been accessible to the unauthorised third party. The information relating to you that may have been taken includes: • The name and email address you registered with; • An encrypted (salted and hashed) password used by you to access your account connected with the platform; • IP addresses from which you have registered and/or logged into your account with us; • App IDs (32-character strings used to make requests to our service) associated with your account; • Personal and/or business name and address (if you have provided these); • Country of residence (if provided); • Website address (if provided). Example client website requests? Posted: 12 Mar 2020 01:28 PM PDT Probably worded really wrong but I mean if you were a freelancer and a small business asked to design a website, what would they ask for. E.g. in an old assignment, the "back-story" was that a fake travel company wanted a company I worked for to redesign and rebuild his website (there was a really bad demo site). I want to do this because then I could have a range of examples in my portfolio to show what I could do, but I can't think of too many "example requests". Even just knowing a better way to word it would probably let me find them on DuckDuckGo. [link] [comments]

Anyone periodically have issues with Google reCAPTCHA V3? Posted: 12 Mar 2020 09:10 AM PDT Sometimes I get an "Uncaught (in promise) null" error in console, even though the domains are registered, and have tried the typical recommendations, and other times it just seems to...stop working. Posted: 12 Mar 2020 12:55 PM PDT I've seen this on some sites, but I don't know what this technique is called. So I can't be more specific. Sorry. [link] [comments]
Posted: 12 Mar 2020 12:54 PM PDT Hey, everyone. I am working on figuring out a CMS solution for my first client. He is currently a Wordpress user but expressed an interest in switching to something which makes editing less daunting. I coded and styled a simple html site from scratch which my client liked and am just looking for an easy solution to retrofit what I currently have with an intuitive editor that keeps costs down for my client. SurrealCMS seems like the perfect solution, however since it is a commercial site and would infrequently need changes, I want backup options in case he doesn't want to spend $120 annually. Honestly anything similar to Surreal would be ideal. Perch seems like another option which is easy to implement into what I've built, but the lack of point and click visual editing, like surreal and wordpress offer is a drawback. Scrivito is another option I stumbled upon, although I am having difficulty finding many people online who can vouch for it. It seems like they have partnered with netlify to provide hosting and a CMS bundled together for a low price. Their WYSIWYG editor seems like a decent option but I don't want to hook my client into a service that doesn't have any reputation built up. I really appreciate any feedback you guys have! eCommerce Mobile site V Mobile App Posted: 12 Mar 2020 12:20 PM PDT Are there any good reports that show at what size you need your site to be for a mobile app to be worthwhile. I am developing a woocommerce site for a client and the project is progressing nicely, but they've just dropped a bomb of "How are you approaching the app version of the website? How do you get it onto an app store?" in a progress email. This is the first mention of an app at any stage. I don't want to turn around and just say "We're doing a website that will be mobile optimised, but we're not building you an app." I also want to show the benefits of a Mobile Optimised website over a Mobile App. So far I've got:
