    Game Development World Championship 2020

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 05:11 AM PDT

    Warm greetings from cold Finland!

We're calling for all game developers to participate this year's GDWC - Game Development World Championship!

The GDWC is a yearly global online championship for game developers, open for games on all platforms, and fit for teams of all sizes and backgrounds. It's been organized in it's current form since 2016. GDWC offers exposure for your game and a chance to win prizes, like a trip to Finland and visits to top game studios.

For this year, we have two main categories, Pro and Hobby, and a bonus category for Game Jam games. Winners in all these categories will be chosen by a Jury of industry veterans. There's also a weekly fan vote, which opens later this year, and culminates in the Fan Favorite vote at the end of the year.

As said above, all games on all platforms are welcome: PC, Console (PlayStation, Switch, Xbox, etc.), Mobile (Android, iOS), Browser games, VR Games, Board Games, etc. Only requirement is that the game can't be released before 2020. Games released this year, currently in development or Early Access games are accepted.

Submissions are open until the end of the year in here: http://thegdwc.com

If you're a game dev with a new game in the works or just out, consider participating! We'd love to have you on board. If you have any questions, fire away, we'll try to answer as quickly as possible.

Edit: Just to clarify, you don't have to travel to Finland to participate, and the GDWC 2020 reward trip to Finland will take place in 2021.

This seems like an impossible task. You never find the right sound effect on the internet. for music you hire someone but for sounds like foley and stuff is impossible. How to do it? who should I hire if I need to?

After 3 months of intensive coding I have managed to create the first version of my new game. What is PyuTas? PyuTas is a twin stick shooter with retro graphics and high difficulty. It features 6 levels for now but there will be more!

Hi everyone, my name is Kene and I am currently a junior game design major student attending Quinnipiac University.

My team and I are currently developing a Barbershop Simulator Virtual Reality game and we want to get your thoughts and suggestions from this survey. This survey will really help us in the development stages of our game. I promise you it won't take long.

    Thank you :)

General confusion on game development jargon

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 01:00 AM PDT

Hello. I'm a recently graduated gameplay programmer, and I just have to get this off my chest.

Ever since getting into game development, I've seen countless people mixing up certain terms, with "game design" and "level design" being two of the most prominent. To those thinking that this does not matter, here are some problems that arise from this:

    1. When you have to search for specific things online, you will often get unrelated results before you get correct results. This is not the fault of the search engine you are using, but rather the misuse of the jargon. Imagine this: you want to look for a good tutorial on designing enemies, and all you get is how to draw orcs. Luckily we are not there yet, but I worry that we are heading in that direction.
    2. Some online courses / content creators straight-up lie about their content, probably due to ignorance of the meaning of the terms in use. Many of the students that enroll in these courses also do not necessarily know what "game design" is, and look to their teachers for correct usage of these terms.
    3. There is a soft takeover of these terms happening with people new to game development (and gamers alike) no longer seeing the difference between for example "game art" and "game design". If you call 3D modelling "game design", then what are you supposed to call actual game design?

Here are some real-world examples of these problems:

    1. This course on Udemy claims to teach game design. However, from looking through their promotional video, looking at their website, and their responses on getting called out on this, it is clear to me that they in fact think game design == game art creation. They have ~50,000 enrolled students. https://www.udemy.com/course/become-a-game-designer/While some of what they teach can certainly be useful in prototyping your game designs (and maybe some tidbits of it is actual game design), they seem to focus almost exclusively on general game development, not game design. This is also apparent on their website where they refer to the industry as "the game design industry". I haven't checked out their entire course, but this feels like an unintentional scam. They should just correct their course title (and their brand name "School of Game Design").NB: I reported the course on Udemy, but Udemy replied by saying "you should reach out to the creator directly instead", so they're not willing to enforce actions on their own website against misleading advertisement.
    2. The content creator Sykoo repeatedly abuses the word "level design". This occurs on several of his videos, like in this one: https://youtu.be/bFFSIMgMxbkI am only using him as an example because it is necessary to point this out in a natural habitat (so do not direct any hatred towards him, please). I feel like his casual use of the wrong terms accurately represents how many people misunderstand these terms.
    3. If you look in the r/gamedesign subreddit (and other related gamedev subreddits), you will also frequently see posts on 3D modelling that is (surprise, surprise!) not in fact game design.

Honestly, sometimes it feels like a lot of people misunderstood these terms (or did not bother looking up their meanings), then went on to create learning content on this skewed foundation. When you're only learning game development by yourself, i.e. not in a cooperative work environment, not in school, etc., you tend to not get checked on your understanding of the terms you are using. I feel like this is a big reason why these misunderstandings are happening, but that's just my gut feeling. And it's happening pretty high up with content creators, it's not just startups and kids - it's people making money off of courses, content creators hired by serious companies like Unity (Sykoo), and probably also elsewhere (I can't find them all).

What are your experiences with misunderstood terms in gamedev? What other terms get frequently misunderstood?

    Edit: typo.

Invitation to contribute to a the brand new nautilus game engine

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 11:21 AM PDT

Is there a very lightweight and basic game engine for C# meeting the following requirements?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 07:12 AM PDT

I would like to learn trigonometry, mechanics, etc. by making small simple games with the formulas, but also get better at C# with it (therefore, languages like Labview or math & mechanics simulators than allow events aren't useful for my goal). Is there an engine ready for the following requirements:
    - Premade window, scenes and camera functions
    - Premade functions to draw points, lines, and polygons
    - Premade functions for lighting, coloring, texturing
Optional: premade functions for input and sound

Why wouldn't Unity Animator accept my duplicated animations?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 10:29 AM PDT

I'm running into quite a dilemma. I duplicated my animation files since I need to add an Event on one of the animations which originally are set to read only. The animations when dragged directly onto the model work well and I can edit them as I see fit. The issue is when I try to add the duplicated animations into a state in the animator, please see the below video for reference. I can add any other type of animation and they work (even the read only) however the ones I duplicated aren't being accepted.

Anybody can pin point why this issue and how I can overcome it?

How to design an indie like Octopath traveller?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2020 10:02 AM PDT

Hello all! I am a student game developer who has recently begun creating games. As I am not extremely advanced and I am working as an individual, I have taken inspiration from indies such as Hollow Knight and Celeste. After pouring in hundreds of hours into Octopath Traveler on my Nintendo Switch, I was really inspired to incorporate a similar HD-2D design for my game. Any help on how to do this? Thanks for everything (also pardon if this is the wrong subreddit. I am using Unity to develop the game btw).
