[News] Baidu Open-Sources RNA Prediction Algorithm for 2019 Novel Coronavirus

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 11:30 AM PST

In response to the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak, China tech giant Baidu has open-sourced its RNA (Ribonucleic acid) prediction algorithm LinearFold. The tool can significantly accelerate the prediction time of a virus's RNA secondary structure, affording frontline researchers an opportunity to better understand the virus and develop targeting vaccines in a time of crisis.

    CS education becoming more Practical?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 03:43 PM PST

This is something I have been pondering for a while know. I have seen a trend in trend in CS bachelor studies becoming more practical in my neighborhood (part of the country). By that I mean, the way the study is taught is becoming more group project and assessment based, instead of founded in theory and based on individual tests per subject.

Is this something you see as well, or perhaps the opposite? And maybe even more important, do you think this is a good move?

What are some modern models of computation that are alternative to the lambda calculus? Have any decent attempts been made to model quantum computation through a lambda calculi?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 02:56 PM PST

    Hello r/compsci

If my title wasn't clear enough, I'm curious to know what are some modern approaches to lambda calculi that have come into existence recently/what are some unsolved problems relating modelling computation? Is this something researchers actually care to consider or is it a closed book? For reference I am familiar with the calculus of constructions

Also as a side point, are there any currently existing approaches to modelling a lambda calculi for quantum computation? If not, why?

Any discussion or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

    Programming a Samsung Gear?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 08:17 PM PST

Does anyone have experience programming a Samsung Gear 2? I've never done a project with a smartwatch before but this is what I want to do:

Detect the gesture of a dumbbell curl at the gym, and once finished curling start the timer on the watch to time a set.

Anyone have any advice on how to pull this sensor data from the watch or other tips?

Do a master degree in Computer science or related increase your chances in career promotion or salary?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2020 05:15 AM PST

As stated in the title I would like to know opinions from people already in the industry about this, will a master help me to have a better career and salary in it than just having a bachelor degree?
