    Google Tech Dev Guide - Google's Curated List of Resources for Learning Programming

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 07:54 AM PST

    Google Tech Dev Guide is a curated collection of materials from many sources, including Google, that you can use to supplement your classwork or direct your own learning.

    Excerpted from their website, "Whether you're a student or an educator, newer to computer science or a more experienced coder, or otherwise interested in software engineering, we hope there's something for you here in Google's Guide to Technical Development. "

    I was recommended this resource by a Google Tech Recruiter in a rejection mail 😅 I really liked this resource and decided to share it here. Hope you find it useful as well :)

    Does anyone else get super interested/focused at night?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 11:26 PM PST

    Through my years as a CS student, I've always noticed that during the last 2 to 3 hours of the day, when I'm tired enough to go to bed, I get in this mind state of super interest and focus.

    In the middle of the day, I often find it hard to really sit down and focus for more than an hour at a time without needing a break. It's to the point where if someone needs my attention during these peak hours, I get frustrated because I know I could be plugging myself in and learning/doing so much. It's what I imagine taking Adderall is like.

    Does anyone else get this? Is there a name for what I am experiencing? I would love to be in this state all the time, but something tells me that's impossible without destroying my mind with drugs.

    In your experience, when is it actually reasonable to start applying for junior developer positions?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 10:34 PM PST

    On this subreddit, and others as well it always seems like people provide these massive lists of things to know and to be able to do just for a junior position.

    In your experience, what is the earliest that it actually makes sense to apply for junior positions?

    Code base entirely in Italian and I don't speak a word in Itatian !

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 11:51 PM PST

    I recently got a contract on a freelancing platform, I was very excited since it's my first contract on this particular website, and the project was built in Python (I like Python a lot).

    I spoke with the client who seemed very nice, immediately gave me access to the main repository of the project, I cloned it and to my surprise :

    1. The code base is entirely written in Italian (classes, variable names...)
    2. The code base is poorly documented ( a lot of commented out code with no explanation, not a single docstring to explain what functions take, return ... )

    I am really frustrated as I really want to work on this project, what should I do ? Should I try to translate ?! Adapt myself to it ? learn Italian ?

    Feedback for my project

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 11:31 PM PST

    Hey Reddit, we are a couple of university students and we have made this website to help new comers plus anyone else eager to learn some programming. As of right now the website only contains chapters for python and html. We also have fundamentals of computer science. The subjects themselves contain a single chapter right now to show what sort of material will be covered. We would appreciate it a lot if the community could run through our website and give us feedback. Don't worry about how harsh it may be as we need all the feedback as we can get. If you would like to learn more about us you can also email us at goldengooseglobals@gmail.com. Again, thank you for your help and if you need more information, please don't hesitate to ask.

    What’s a successful path to take for learning ML

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 07:42 PM PST

    I have decent experience in Python and I want to do something in the A.I. field in the future, so I figured if I start small and early it'll help. I am currently in Algebra 1 and I know I have a long way to go for the math aspect. I'm using Khan Academy to accelerate my learning ahead of my current math class(also my math teacher barely explains things which is unfortunate). So what is a good way to learn ML and help set myself up for the future? Thanks!

    Should I continue learning C or start learning C++?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 10:44 PM PST

    Hey,

    I'm trying to learn system and software engineering, and I was wondering if I should stick with C or start learning C++?

    I already know the basics of C++, and I could easily get into advanced C++. But I don't know if i should stick with C and learn advanced things like OSDevelopment ( & Other System Programming stuff) etc..., OR start learn C++ for things like OSDevelopment, Software development (Software & System Programming)etc...?

    NOTE: I already know how to code with C.

    Best Regards.

    Trying to set a vision for 2020

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 10:34 PM PST

    Hi everyone. I've been watching this subreddit for a while now and saw everyone is so helpful and and so determined to help each other out. I'd like your help to set my 2020 goals in learning programming. I used to be a Computer science student in highschool. Although I only got up to basics of C and HTML5 as I had to quit due to economic reasons. But recently got a decent job and wanna get back into programming as it was my dream to become a programmer. So I picked up on HTML5 again Studied CSS3 and currently studying JavaScript during my free time. I'm currently on DOM and using w3schools and YouTube tutorials for my course materials. I realized it's been 5 months since I've been doing it. I recently learned git and github too. Now I want your help to guide me where to head next. Will I be completing vanilla JS by April this year? And What is React? How is this different from Bootstrap 4(I learnt bootstrap already too)? Is Node JS my next course? Or should I get into python? I do realize I have to practice a lot. Also can someone point me towards SVG and canvas from HTML5 I still have no idea how that works.

    Is this bad programming practice?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 10:30 PM PST

    Let's say I have a view element in an application, and I'm setting it's attributes one by one like this-

    self.view.backgroundcolor=red; Self........=50; And a lot more properties like it's position, textColor and textSize etc.

    Where does this code belong? I can't put it in the constructor since there's a lot more UI elements. Does this belong in the setter methods of respective UI elements where I pass all these properties as arguments to the setter?

    I'm only asking because this chunk of self defining looks weird and could be bad practice but I'm not sure.

    Having trouble writing a function that will take a tic-tac-toe board and return a hash that is equal to the hash returned by any permutation of that board passed to the function.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 09:28 PM PST

    I'm writing a tic-tac-toe program, and the computer uses minimax to decide which move to play. I've made the program a bit more efficient by storing previously evaluated board positions in a trie and returning the previously evaluated value of the board state instead of evaluating it again.

    At the moment, the program can't tell if the board that it's evaluating is a permutation of a previously evaluated board (rotated 90°, flipped on an axis, etc.). What I'd like to do is write a function that will take a board state and return a hash that is equal to the hash returned by any permutation of that board state.

    My issue is in ensuring that the hash returned by the function for a given board state is equivalent to only permutations of that board state. What I've done at the moment is calculate the distance from each X to each O, each X to each other X, each O to each other O, and whether the Xs and Os are corner pieces, edge pieces, or a center piece. I sort these values independently and the concatenate them into a string which is returned.

    Any help or tips are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    The sample questionnaire for the Python cert test is already confusing me. I understand double asterisks (**) are the power operator but...

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 08:02 PM PST

    How do back to back power operators work?

    2 ** 3 ** 2 ** 1

    Is this valid syntax yielding 64? Or will having back to back power operators throw an error? Thank you in advance!!

    How do I tell if code I write is "good"? Also a question about javadocs.

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 07:49 PM PST

    I'm working on a project of my own creation for really the first time, but I can't tell if my code is good and clean, or if it's really poorly written and messy and confusing. I'm adding comments and stuff to explain methods, but I don't know if that's enough or if they're adequate.

    also, javadocs. When is this needed? Is there something wrong with just comments? Does anyone know of a good video or tutorial for java docs?

    [C++] Trying To Solve a Diagonal Difference Problem (beginner)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 07:16 PM PST

    I'm a beginner to C++ and trying to solve a "diagonal difference" problem.

    Given a square matrix, I'm supposed to calculate the absolute difference between the sums of its diagonals.

    ex:

    11 2 4 4 5 6 10 8 -12

    Primary Diagonal:

    11 5 -12

    Secondary Diagonal:

     4 5 10

    Solution would be 15 if you subtract primary and secondary diagonals. (absolute value)

    I came up with a solution that worked when hard coded for a 3x3, but one of the test cases is 500x500 2D array.

    I am stuck and wondering where I went wrong. Here is what I have so far:

    int diagonalDifference(vector<vector<int>> arr) { int firstTotal = 0; int secondTotal = 0; int absTotal = 0; int firstMiddleNumbers = 0; int secondMiddleNumbers = 0; int lastY = arr.size()-1; int lastX = arr[0].size()-1; for(int i = 1; i < arr.size(); i++) { firstMiddleNumbers += arr[i][i]; } firstTotal = arr[0][0] + firstMiddleNumbers + arr[lastX][lastY]; for(int j = arr[0].size()-1; j > 0; j--) { secondMiddleNumbers += arr[j][j]; } secondTotal = arr[lastX][0] + secondMiddleNumbers + arr[0][lastY]; absTotal = abs(firstTotal-secondTotal); return absTotal; }

    HSSF npoi problem with colouring cells

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 06:16 PM PST

    using c#

    I have a problem with highlighting a cell. When I try to use the code below, the cell can be created and what not BUT the setfilloregroundcolor and setfillpattern will have this kind of error

    "hssfcellstyle does not contain a definition for setfillforegroundcolor and no accessible extension method setfillforegroundcolor accepting a first argument of type hssfcellstyle could be found".

    I'm not sure if I'm missing a nuget package but I'm pretty sure that's how you type it for hssf npoi. If it is a nuget package I'm missing, anyone know the name of it?

    HSSFCellStyle interviewassess = (HSSFCellStyle)workbook.CreateCellStyle();

    HSSFFont highlight = (HSSFFont)workbook.CreateFont();

    highlight.FontName = "Times New Roman";

    highlight.FontHeightInPoints = 11;

    interviewassess.SetFont(highlight);

    interviewassess.Alignment = NPOI.SS.UserModel.HorizontalAlignment.Left;

    interviewassess.VerticalAlignment = VerticalAlignment.Center;

    interviewassess.setFillForegroundColor(HSSFColor.Grey25Percent.Index); //error here

    interviewassess.setFillPattern(CellStyle.SOLID_FOREGROUND);

    A friend of mine expressed interest in learning to program for games, and I'm wanting to get him a book and a course coupon as a (late) Christmas present. Suggestions?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 02:09 PM PST

    He expressed interest in learning to program. His initial attempt was with C/C++ and he found it far too difficult due to memory management and such. I wanted to find a good entry-level programming (preferably scripting) language that he can make good use of.

    I've thought about JavaScript, as it's good for basic networking and webpages and I've been using it for many years and can help him along. But he seems more interested in getting into game programming or modding. Aside from C++, I don't know what a good entry-level language would be best for that. Maybe Lua?

    I have almost 0 experience with game programming or modding and so I'm at a loss. Which language would be good for him to start with?

    Web dev VS mobile dev

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 05:49 PM PST

    background: I'm 25 years old guy, want to switch career, I know HTML, CSS, Java, and PHP back from college but never done a complete project but i know how things work like OOP, variables types, methods, if/else, for, while, etc so picking up a language won't be a problem for me (just time matters for me).

    goal (It's all about time) : landing a job as soon as possible cause i have a limited time like 8-10 months.

    I searched for available jobs in my city and the most was either web or mobile.

    questions: according to the market now and the people who are in the field rn, what's the best niche or the shortest/easiest path to land a job in the shortest time.

    Should i do one of the popular full stack web dev paths like The Odin Project or freeCodeCamp?

    Java with spring or boot spring for web?

    or commit myself to Java/kotlin for android or swift for IOS?

    Thanks community.

    [C++] Are you allowed only one main() in each project?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2020 01:25 PM PST

    Hey guys, my question is the title of the post, but I'll reiterate. Can you not have multiple main methods in a project with C++? I'm coming from java so I guess this is weird to me.

    I'm using eclipse for C++ development. Normally when I write Java programs in eclipse, I can have more than one main within a project. A project is what's on the left hand side of the IDE. I'm talking about having multiple programs within one project if that helps clarify. Also here is an imgur link. http://imgur.com/gallery/Y81V8zV/

    Like when I want to start a new program for a different assignment all I do in java is click "create new java class"but creating a new .cpp seems to work differently. It only allows me to compile the main.cpp and I can't have another main. So is c++ different from java in this regard where each assignment I do has to be a brand new project?
