Building a website for a friend - need help Posted: 01 Dec 2019 07:00 AM PST I'm making a website for an old friend and his small business, figuring it would give me some more practice as I continue to learn web development. I feel comfortable with the html and css part, but I'm still a novice with javascript and I'm not sure how to implement like a checkout page for his products and make it functional and what not. Am I way in over my head or is this something that I can accomplish? And how should I go about that. Thanks guys! [link] [comments]

[Tutorial] - NodeJS/Express + MongoDB + PassportJS authentication system Posted: 01 Dec 2019 08:22 AM PST Since many doc's out there (in my opinion) somehow expect from you to be already familiar with some concepts shown in the doc's, i've found myself kind of struggling to create an authentication system in nodejs/express and passportjs from scratch. So i recorded a tutorial on how to create a complete authentication system from scratch in nodejs/express together with PassportJS and MongoDB. If your interested or also found yourself having some troubles implementing it, you can find the tutorial on YouTube here: Happy coding everyone! [link] [comments]
I think I want to quit but I’m unsure what to do Posted: 01 Dec 2019 05:04 AM PST I have a year and a half of front end dev experience now and I've honestly have been traumatized by this experience. I can not believe the racism, sexism, and the bullying I received at my workplace. I am a minority and female and I got into this industry because I came from a low income background and wasn't making enough to live prior to this. I worked at a bank as a teller and did postmates. I simply wanted to just work and be able to move up, be able to have a good life and just live. However the experience I have had has triggered severe anxiety and depression as well. My manager doesn't have my back and does not seem to have a spine, he is a nice guy but doesn't stand up for his Devs and seems to be an old school tech guy so he doesn't even know how popular frameworks operate and how to write in JS. The other Devs are white men ranging from late 20s to early 40s. Some of them have an entitled attitude and complain about the tech stack we use( we use Angular on the front end with NgRX, also ionic for mobile apps, backend we are Node, and I believe MongoDB, SQL, and AzureDevOps for devops). The developers do not include me in conversations regarding projects, I am often left out because I am junior, purposefully not given tasks and ignored. Due to this I have grown apathetic and indifferent and I am currently on a performance plan and am blamed for this, even though I have asked for help, asked to be given a smaller tasks, and a mentor to help me grow. I am a year and a half in and still struggle incredibly and have been looking for a new job for six months now with no results, always rejected. I am honestly tired and anxious and sad. I also experienced sexual harassment but luckily was able to get the person fired because I reported it to HR and the other Devs corroborated with what I told HR. I was thinking about going into UX, or atleast trying my best to give front end development another chance and maybe another job would give me the lift up I so desperately need. I am doing the best I can to survive, what can I do? [link] [comments]

Quickest way to build online store / ecommerce? Posted: 01 Dec 2019 10:38 AM PST Hey! So I am a programmer, but not quite a web developer. I could make a simple website, but it would take me time. And no way in hell would I ever trust myself to create something that handles user auth / payments from scratch. With that said, what are some of the best ways for me to quickly yet safely and securely make an ecom website? Nothing too high level, like shopify and wordpress. But are there any like inclusive libraries or maybe less involved gui systems out there for this? [link] [comments]

Best SVG export settings for web in Illustrator CC (2014)? Posted: 01 Dec 2019 08:44 AM PST Hello, I need to export a text based logo to a SVG format (the original is in .ai and I have Adobe Illustrator CC 2014). I'm presented with these option: https://www.dropbox.com/s/oqyjazs04u3wf0y/screenshot.1.jpg?dl=0 Can anyone please advise the best settings? Also, if I'd use a newer Illustrator, would the SVG be any better in terms of file size and compatibility? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Feeling kinda lost in my work and not sure what to do. Posted: 01 Dec 2019 12:28 PM PST I graduated last year with a 2-year degree in software development. Towards the end of my schooling, I started working more with JavaScript, and have kinda tended towards it ever since. I struggled to find a job coming out of school, and eventually landed at a company that an old coworker recommended to me. It basically worked like a coding bootcamp -- they had me do some coding training for 3 months, and then would contract me out. It's a full-stack program, which runs you through SQL, Java, some brief JavaScript, Service-Oriented Architecture, Spring, and REST APIs. I would say I'm pretty comfortable in my development skills, and that I would have no problem in an environment using those technologies. I learned Vue as my first JavaScript framework, and came to really like it. As part of the training I received, they encouraged the use of Angular. Unfortunately I really struggled to pick it up since it just seemed like a lot of extra bulk compared to Vue. Due to my past experience with Vue, I was able to skip the Angular section and move on with the training. I started a contract back in August, and I'm working on a project that is using some pretty old tech. The project is nearing 10 years in length. It's all Java, with GWT for the frontend. It has been an extremely painful development process, with simple tasks such as creating a modal dialog taking me as much as 3 weeks to complete. The way GWT does things and how it interacts within the application is completely backwards and goes against all conventions I am familiar with. Honestly, it's kinda killing me to continue working on it because I know the stuff I'm working with isn't going to be useful for me to know. I've done some job searching because I really don't think I can take another year of this project. My passion is working with Vue, but there are next to no job openings available for it because it's still pretty small compared to React and Angular. I've applied for a few positions where they used Vue, and I've gotten interviews which I thought went well, but then the companies completely ghosted me and I never heard back from them. Anymore, searching for jobs just makes me feel apathetic and I can't bring myself to do it. But I know I need to make some change otherwise it's just gonna get worse. Does anyone have any advice? [Question] How to make page scroll down after clicking a button? Posted: 01 Dec 2019 08:11 AM PST Hi, I am currently working on React and pretty new to it. I used to use this function to show the next page: //To keep it hidden initially $('main').hide(); //To reveal it after clicking button $('button').on('click', function() { $('main').show(); }); How can I hide <page2 /> to the same effect? And where do I write this function? [link] [comments]
WeChat Mini Programs Framework Posted: 01 Dec 2019 03:40 PM PST Hi everyone, I am new to learning more about tech and I would like to ask you a couple of questions. I read a bit about WeChat Mini Programs and I am wondering if anyone knows what the difference is between what they are doing and basic WebView? They are using wxml instead of HTML and wxss instead of CSS. Is there any particular reason for this? [link] [comments]
Help me understand how to choose a method for information storage and retrieval? Posted: 01 Dec 2019 09:32 AM PST I'm getting lost in the weeds because I don't have any background in back-end stuff. How do I know when data should be kept in a database (MySQL?) vs something else? I've tried asking about this project a couple of times and people have said "you don't need MySQL if you don't have user accounts". I don't want to have to repeat myself (typing info) over and over, it would be easier to be able to refer to a central like, spreadsheet or whatever. The information I want to display doesn't really change, but I might only want to display certain attributes (I may be using this word out of context) on certain pages. I don't know if the information could be described as relational or not? Like I could lay it out in a spreadsheet and include all of the information related to an item in a single row, but it would be a really long row. I did go as far as looking into stuff like JSON, but from what I read a JSON file itself shouldn't be 'the database'. Roast me. I have no idea how to ask what I'm trying to figure out ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (thanks for your time!) [link] [comments]
Need help figuring out cloud storage and delivering/downloading files Posted: 01 Dec 2019 09:31 AM PST Hi, I'm starting a project where I will be generating videos for users (From a Shopify Store) and sending them the finished result. Right now I'm hosting the videos in a bucket on B2 Cloud Storage. In the email that I have Shopify send when the video is ready, it creates a link to the file. Right now, when you click on the link, it takes you right to the video where you can watch it. Downloading it can range from annoying (saving the link as a video) to extremely difficult (can't get an iPhone to save the video at all. I'd really like to get it so that clicking on the link from the email will send them to a page that downloads the file automatically. I've found some PHP code that looks like it would work: ?php // We'll be outputting a video header('Content-type: video'); // It will be called video.mp4 header('Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="video.mp4"'); // The video source is in original.mp4 readfile('original.mp4'); ? But I have no idea how or where to implement it. Is Shopify and the bucket from Backblaze not enough? Is there another step I'm missing? I'm very new to web development/hosting/cloud storage, and I'm confused how to come up with a solution. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks [link] [comments]
gapi.client.enterprises is undefined - Android Management API Posted: 01 Dec 2019 08:46 AM PST I am trying to use the Google API client (gapi) to interface with the Android Management API. I am doing this in Vuejs, but this is not where the issue lies. I am using Typescript and the following @type packages are installed: @types/gapi, @types/gapi.auth2, @types/gapi.client.androidmanagement.
Once that has finished, I prompt the user to sign in, if not already signed in (this works). Technically I should be able to use the Android Management API now, but when I try to access "this.gapi.client.enterprises" I get an error because "this.gapi.client.enterprises" is undefined. This isn't in the docs, but I found some suggestion online, so I have also tried to load the Android Management API before accessing "this.gapi.client.enterprises": Doesn't change a thing. What am I doing wrong? [link] [comments]

What to consider while buying a domain for e-mail services? Posted: 01 Dec 2019 07:57 AM PST Hi everybody! I am currently planning to begin a "fresh" start in the world wide web and would like to get rid of all my e-mail addresses and user accounts I used before and create new ones. I think it would be a great idea to buy a domain (root) and then creating a few second level domains for different internet services. Therefore I would like to group my second level domains by categories like gaming, social media, shopping, business, etc. I did a few hours of research and I found a lot of services that offer domains, web front ends for emails and so on. But I am really struggling with security, prices and the services they offer. So my question to you professionals (if this is the right sub for): What do I need to consider while buying a domain, what do I need to get my e-mails at one place that is secure? I am located in Germany. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]

Best way to store and use static data? Posted: 01 Dec 2019 01:19 PM PST I took a web dev course where we built a simple webpage, then we removed the content, stored it in a json file, accessed that file with jQuery, and used the json object to populate the webpage. I thought it was brilliant. My jQuery would loop through my json file, so I could add and remove things from my json file at will and my webpage would respond accordingly. I made a second project that was really just the first project with different data and a few other minor tweaks. Now I'm on my third project, which I'm building from scratch. I decided to do vanilla JS (which might be a bad idea) and I came across async issues for the first time in my life. After hours of Google and Stack Overflow, I finally got my code to work, although it might still break with a slower connection. Fighting with my async issues, I thought to myself that it would be a lot easier if json could be accessed from the directory and not from the web, or if I could just store my json object in a text file and then parse it with my javascript. I'm making a simple idle game, and I've got an objectives.json file with eight objects, but I'd like to be able to easily add more as my game progresses. I'm already using localstorage to save the player's game. What is the easiest way/best practice to store this kind of data (static game info/rules/logic) and accessing it?

vBulletin + vBcmps alternative? Posted: 01 Dec 2019 01:08 PM PST Hi 📷r/webdev. Not sure if this is the proper place to ask the question I'm going to, so feel free to point me in the right way if it isn't. Also, excuse me since English is not my native language. 10 or so years ago, I used to own and run an emulation-related website called "Retrojogos" that had a main news page that was interconnected with the forums. It was powered by a (very expensive) vBulletin 3.x licensed forum and one addon called vBadvanced CMPS. The "News Posts" were simple forum threads that were posted in a specific forum where the CMPS bit got them from. Here is how it used to look in 2005(!) - Link Fast forward into late 2019, and I'm looking to get something very similar running on a shared webhosting (to start with) since I'm planning on not having more than 100 or 150 users total, maybe 10 or 20 online at the same time. I'm currently trying out a Wordpress + BBPress install, but it seems to put the importance on the wrong part (the blog, where I mostly only want to do news/articles) where the forums are kinda dull and with few options to manage it (by comparison with the old vBulletin 3.x that is). Not to mention that the theming bit on the forums isn't remotely similar to the WP theme. Does anyone know of a better integrated solution that isn't expensive (I've looked into vBulletin 5 yikes) and that is better integrated? [link] [comments]
