I’ll write music for your game for free! Posted: 10 Aug 2019 06:28 AM PDT Hi! I'm shiei, a composer and music producer. One of my university assignments is to make music for a game, so I thought I'll reach out here if anyone needs some free music! If you're interested, please DM me! I'll require a 3-5 minute clip (i.e. gameplay) of your game by 16 August 2019 😬 My style: I won't be doing any orchestral works because of time and workload constraints, but think Pokemon-esque music. I can do some sound design as well. Edit: My SoundCloud is soundcloud.com/shiei if you'd like to see some of my previous work. [link] [comments] |

What did you learn after releasing your first game? Posted: 10 Aug 2019 05:02 AM PDT I'll soon be pressing the magic button "Release App" in Steamworks, and I was wondering what lessons did you take from releasing your first game? What was that day like for you? Stressful? A relief? I'm curious to hear what your expeirence was like. [link] [comments] |
Any good sites devoted to game-specific math? Posted: 10 Aug 2019 02:45 AM PDT I guess this could be an expansive topic, but I'm looking for a site that gets me into the mindset of when a certain function could be beneficial. What branches of Math do you find most applicable in your day-to-day game programming? Geometry, Trig, Arithmetic, etc. [link] [comments] |
How will new AGCOM regulations affect indie-game developers access to Italian market? Posted: 10 Aug 2019 09:12 AM PDT https://www.webnews.it/2019/08/02/videogiochi-arrivano-i-bollini-di-agcom/ Google Translation for convenience: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.webnews.it%2F2019%2F08%2F02%2Fvideogiochi-arrivano-i-bollini-di-agcom%2F I've been wondering how most indie-devs expect this to affect them. I imagine complying with these new regulations by AGCOM would make the Italian market inaccessible for inde-game developers who lack a budget to cover proper content ratings for their products. I've been hearing of this push from AGCOM for a little while and I can't help but feel it's ignoring the market aside from AAA titles when making this decision. As I understand it, PEGI ratings are one of the most expensive ratings to obtain at approximately $2,000 USD. For many indie game developers, this might be unachievable and I can only imagine this new regulation will simply prevent a lot of smaller indie games from being made available in Italy. The vocabulary suggests this only affects games which are "sold" and that is why I wonder if exceptions will be made for indie developers eventually. [link] [comments] |
Best HTML5 engine to learn in 2019 (Facebook Instant Games) Posted: 10 Aug 2019 05:49 AM PDT There is an archived post with a similar title as this one but it's 2 years old, which is an eternity in programming especially game dev. For someone making a very simple 2D game, where I just need to move some sprites around a background image, what is the best HTML5 engine? The specific context is creating a Facebook instant game. Some additional dev points:
So what's your mid-2019 state of the union address for HTML5 game dev? Bonus points for any recommendations connected to the Facebook Instant games platform. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Aug 2019 05:09 AM PDT Hey gamedevs! I've was a computer science student for 2 years and the only programming we have done is simple console programs that are not really complex (usually around 100 lines max).. so recently i decided to dive right into Unity and challenge myself to make something! I just wanted to share how satisfying i find it when i solve a problem that i have been struggling with and i couldn't find an answer on Google For example, i am currently making a simple game / app for a drinking game a friend and I enjoy playing (ring of fire / kings cup for those that know it!). In this game a deck of playing cards are arranged into a circle where they can be drawn from. I didn't know how to instantiate each card from my List in circle (adding an offset on each loop was not able to make a cirlce, well at least i didn't know how to do that and couldn't find an answer anywhere). This is when i had my idea! I created a cube object that would hold this script to deal the cards, i added code to make this cube move in a circle that was the right size that i wanted for the cards! I then instantiated each element of the List at the cubes position and added a small fraction of a second delay! This worked even better than originally intended because the cards now looked like they were being dealt! Sorry for this pointless post i just wanted to share how good it feels to overcome a problem. If any of you have similar experiences where you solved a problem in a way that you didn't expect i would love to hear them! [link] [comments] |
How do you deal with not having an artist? Posted: 10 Aug 2019 11:32 AM PDT I mean in a more emotional sense. I am aware the solution is to pay for an artist but many do not have the funds to pay for one out of pocket. How do other people deal with this? It makes me really depressed that no matter my skills, no matter how much i work on a game, it will always look like shit/have place holder art. I just wish i could find a partner to work with. Edit: posted in wrong sub, not sure how to delete on mobile :/ [link] [comments] |
Landscape artist looking to get into video game landscapes Posted: 10 Aug 2019 10:43 AM PDT I'm an artist and love video games, I am getting interested in the idea of making 3d landscapes or making landscape concept art for games. What are some good first steps? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 10 Aug 2019 09:32 AM PDT Hey everyone, I just wrote up a guideline on the different aspects to consider when writing a review for a puzzle game: https://thepuzzle.press/puzzle-game-review-guideline/ Remember that reviewing puzzle games can help not only the creators of the games but also those who intend to create! It helps everyone better understand the ins and outs of what makes a puzzle game interesting and fun. However, puzzle games are as hard to review as they are to make. There is so much to learn about the different aspects of puzzle game design that make any puzzle game stand out. Hopefully the guideline/template helps a reviewers mind focus on the different aspects when playtesting to get more accurate depictions of what makes the game good or bad. [link] [comments] |

Which game engine for a C++/Webassembly 2D game? Posted: 10 Aug 2019 03:01 AM PDT I've written a small 2D puzzle game in C++ (compiled to Webassembly with emscripten) that uses bare SDL2 (+ SDL2_TTF for fonts). I find SDL2 to be a little too low-level. I feel like I'm reinventing the wheel by coding all these animations, UI widgets, saves, state machines and so on. Do you guys know a higher-level alternative to SDL2 that is:
I'm aware that C++ may not be the easiest option for a web game, but I have a 15 year experience with it and I don't want to put the effort into learning a new programming language for a hobby project. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
I made a calm, nostalgic little game for the GMTK Gamejam, and would love to get some feedback! Posted: 10 Aug 2019 11:40 AM PDT Hi there :) This annual GMTK gamejam is my very first one, so I decided to make a small game about nostalgic and changing colors to see different parts of your home. I'd love to get some feedback from you guys, as I want to polish it a little bit more after the jam! --> One Last Time Explore your home as you leave - one color at a time! [link] [comments] |

Unity seems to be missing 'Tile Pallette' option in the Window section? Posted: 10 Aug 2019 05:29 AM PDT Hey there, Very new to Unity and still figuring it out, so I apologise for my nooby question. I've been following a guide to try and learn to make a platformer and was told to import several items, which I did. I've then gone on to the next step and seen 'now we have everything imported, click Windows > Tile Pallette' - except this option isn't there. I search it online and every guide I see simply says 'go to windows and then tile pallette' but of course... nothing there. I don't know if it's been moved in updates or if I'm missing something here? The link to the guide is here: https://gamedevacademy.org/how-to-build-a-complete-2d-platformer-in-unity/, embarrassingly, I'm a few steps in... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is It Legal & Under Fair Use (Parody)? Posted: 10 Aug 2019 10:41 AM PDT Not sure if this is allowed here but say if you're making a game and you have clothes and accessories a character could wear. Let's say if you have a mask that resembles Sonic with the head being a mix of classic and the teeth and eyes to mock the movie and say if you change the color scheme and add a description like "Smells like old chilli dogs" and name the mask something like "Danic deh Woodhog" would that be considered parody and fair use and completely legal for a commercial game? Or is it something that could lead into legal trouble? I have other references like a messier Goku hair and a Naruto like head band that parodies those but I know those cant be copyrighted since its a hair style and common accessory. I just don't want any serious legal trouble that I would lose and it would just be easier to remove as a indie dev if not allowed. [link] [comments] |
Does enter the gungeon control which enemies can shoot the player? Posted: 10 Aug 2019 06:54 AM PDT Whenever I play the game It always feels like the enemies take turns shooting to not overwhlem the player. I guess it could be done using some sort of randomised priority system. Or am I overanalyzing the game? It could just be that the attack cool downs are randomised enough to allow for small breaks between enemy attacks. [link] [comments] |
Silly question, but can I still become a game developer? Posted: 10 Aug 2019 12:49 AM PDT Hello, I've been looking around reddit and I have realised that there are people that are so much better than me with Unity. For example: https://www.reddit.com/r/Unity3D/comments/co6wuy/after_months_of_development_i_finally_finished_my/ I have tried to create such thing on my own but the results weren't even close to this. I've been developing games for a company before those were simple tasks (for a 2D game) and well…I was wondering whether or not I should keep going and try harder or give up? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 09 Aug 2019 06:44 PM PDT I first learned programming on the job. I then went back to school for a masters in computer science since it was more relevant to me than my undergrad. I've never been a professional game developer, but will make games in my spare time just for fun. Never anything sellable, just for my amusement. I can't help but notice that I feel a much stronger urge to use global variables making games than I ever did making professional software or on school assignments. It seems like games, and only games involve a state of the world that requires countless variables that you either have to pass everywhere, or preferably just declare globally. Obviously, it's usually better to have all these variables organized into objects, but it is just a tremendous convenience to have a global instance of some of these objects. I really want to hear from any professional game developers about how they handle this problem in general. Any specific examples would be awesome. [link] [comments] |
