    Any good programming side hustles?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 04:47 PM PDT

I have a fine job but I'm always looking to get into new areas and learn. It's not so much about the money I would make on the side but I feel a sense of accomplishment that I could produce software that someone buys.

Web development is an obvious but I'm curios what this community does on the side.

How do websites like Honey gather product information?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 08:28 AM PDT

Interested in creating chrome web extension. Can anyone give me a high level explanation as to how an extension like honey works behind the scenes to get product information.

Edit: Sorry, I kind of messed up the title, I know that honey isn't a website, in case there was any confusion.

    Best resource for beginners?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 09:59 PM PDT

I am a BFA Musical Theatre and Honor student grad looking to switch careers. I feel like I'm crazy going into a field I know almost nothing about, but I've heard that there is room for creativity in coding and IT. I'm hoping to get some advice on what specific field I should look into and how I can take steps toward this new career. Are there any resources I can use to get my feet wet to see if this change is actually for me? I'm looking for something stable, reliable, and financially secure. Medium stress level, about 40 hours per week, not on call. I don't mind an office setting, but it would be nice to have flexibility working from office or from home. Anything helps!

Is there a book like "programming from the ground up", but for GUI programming?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 09:52 PM PDT

I love that book, along with "Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software", because it manages to mention enough to please those who love ridiculous precision, but also not get bogged down in the details.

I'm wondering if there's something similar for GUI programming, specifically with the X window system. It would start with maybe assembly programs that would alter the screen directly, or read from the keyboard directly through /dev/input, then explain X, and then explain the higher level toolkits available, like GTK.

    Question regarding mobile telehealth app

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 09:00 PM PDT

    Hi all,

After doing the proper research and seeing a solid product fit, I have started the process of creating a mobile telehealth application that would connect patiences with their respective physician. I am a UX/UI designer and just finished creating the userflow diagrams, wireframes and mockups. I am at the "find experienced developers phase" of the product road map. Although I am more technically inclined then most, my knowledge doesn't scratch the surface when understanding the back end of how this app will work. Im hoping to get some consult on these questions:

There will be two different user persons on this app, 1. a patient, 2. a doctors office that the patient already has an established relationship to. If the patients doctors office is registered with the app then there will be a button to schedule an appointment with their respective physician. A calendar would pop up where the patient can see available times their doctor has and book an appointment for a video conference. On the physician dashboard a pop up will show up showing patient X scheduling an appointment. The physician confirms, and by confirming the patient gets a message about the confirmation. My question is: How does an input from one user side show up on another sides interface? especially in regards to scheduling and making appointments?

Second question kind of piggybacks off the first in that the intent is to have the app have multiple clinics using it. Within those clinics, there will be individuals users using it to communicate with their respective patients. My question is: What does the application architecture look like to allow this 1 mobile application to host x amount of clinics (and their physcians) while all using the same system?

And lastly, because of the particular nature of this app, Is it better to have clinics and patients login to the same app? Or is it better for there to be two separate apps that communicate with each other?

Im sure the the answers to these questions are not just a couple sentences. If you feel it would be too much to type feel free to drop some articles or use cases : ) But all thorough answers are appreciated.

Thanks in advance and thanks for your time.

    Much love.

what skills do you need to become an AI(machine learning) engineer?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 12:31 AM PDT

I've worked with Java, jsp, oracle/mysql, frameworks such as spring and mybatis for a few years, but I'm quitting and I'm going back to school soon. I have a degree in computational biology, and I'm interested in working with AI to tackle real-life problems preferably related to medicine or DNA-related subjects. What are common skillsets that employers look at? If I want to find an AI-related job in 2-3 years, what should I study?

    BASH script

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 06:06 PM PDT

Hey. I need help with project including BASH Script, but I have no clue how to do it. It's 1/4 part of project, I've finished rest of it, but have no clue how to even start that. I'm on networks and programming really isn't my thing. So I'm looking for sth that will help me do it like similar example. Is anyone here who is gonna help? I'll be very thankful.

Your menu must use suitable BASH commands to provide the following functionality:

    Menu Option 1:

Display the current version of BASH, then automatically update and upgrade Linux Mint.

    Menu Option 2:

Install the 'xcowsay' application. Prove that 'xcowsay' is working by running it with the following message: "I love Linux Mint".

    Menu Option 3:

Add the following PPA to Linux Mint ppa:deadsnakes/ppa, then update the system and install Python version 3.7.

    Menu Option 4:

Produce an 'exit' option that closes your program. This option must prompt the user to confirm that they definitely want to exit. When the user answers 'yes', the program must close, when they answer 'no', the main menu must be reloaded.

Ensure that the code for your final PartC1.sh BASH script also includes the following:

    • Suitable 'error handling' features.

    • Relevant comments.

    • Appropriate use of your own custom made BASH functions.

Creating an Array of Doubles from Textbox Inputs ASP.NET

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 05:02 PM PDT

    Hi,

So I have created a Web Form via ASP.NET and Have a total of 47 textbox inputs on a Input Form. This value will never change. Once the values are entered into the textboxes, there's a calculate button at the bottom of the form. When the user presses the button, I want to take the textbox inputs and put them into an array of 47 double variables. I've searched everywhere for an example and would greatly appreciate if someone could show me how to create this array in ASP.NET.

    Thank you

    Creating gamemodes in one program

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 04:48 PM PDT

HI, am developing a game where a user can play one of various simple sports games. I was wondering, since they share some similarities, whether I should write each one as a separate class or use one large class with if statements depending on the different rules?

If I'm making a videogame in C, current game state is a huge, complicated structure, storing positions and states of all objects, the map, the AI, etc. In Haskell, would I just wrap the entire thing in a State monad? Wouldn't it mean that the (huge) state is getting copied needlessly all the time?

Is it possible to build a desktop app as a local server plus a bared-down web browser window, using html+js for the GUI and something else for internal logic, wrapped up in a single executable? It sounds like something that could be useful, but I failed at googling anything like that

    Language and framework for Webdevelopment

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 12:13 PM PDT

    Dear programmers,

I want to realize smaller projects in the near futures and I'm wondering which language / framework I should choose.

I already realized a big project with Java / Spring Boot and was kind of happy with it. Development felt sometimes slow (I come from PHP, good old LAMP days) but I like the static typed language and the resulting type safety.

A colleague recommended me Ruby on Rails and Django. I'm not familiar with Ruby, but I'm familiar with Python.

The projects I want to build are primarily Web apps consisting of a separated Front-End and Back-End where communication takes place over a REST-API. Back-End has to communicate with a database (can be NoSQL, but doesn't have to be NoSQL).

My main requirements are a fast development and good maintenance (i.e. good readable code, not too complex). What would you recommend from your personal background / experience?

TLDR: Want to build a Web app (more specific: REST-API) which uses a database. Which language / framework should I choose?

    Twitch OIDC Authentication Question

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 08:13 AM PDT

I'm using this authentication strategy for an app I'm building. The goal is to store the JWT ID token that I receive from Twitch in the client's cookies and send the token with each request (it's a single-page app and requests are to a REST API.)

I verify the token with every request, but the expiration of tokens from twitch is something like 15 minutes. It seems like there isn't a way to refresh id tokens. Obviously I don't want to redirect the user to the Twitch auth page every 15 minutes, so what is the normal strategy for accomplishing something like this?

Edit It turns out it's possible to verify an id token using PyJWT while ignoring the expiry. So that's what I'm doing in the meantime.

    Any good code review resource?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 09:57 AM PDT

    Hi, I am a Node.js developer with 3 years of experience. In peer code reviews, I get to review code of my colleagues having 6 - 8 years of experience. Some of them start there function with try statement. e.g. function a() { try { // some code. ... }

They put variable declation and even logging statement in try whereas I feel try should be used only around breakable code but they say it's okay to keep everything in try. I know this is not right. How should I convince them?

Can you suggest me some good resources for good practises and code reviews?

how do websites detect user scripts?

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 05:04 AM PDT

In the thread linked, a user wants to automate a way to upvote submissions.

Yes, it's also the fastest way to get shadow banned.

    Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/GreaseMonkey/comments/caify5/upvote_all_submissions_on_a_page/

My thinking is ... what if you set the script to do 1 upvote per 30 seconds? How would this be detected? (Not that I'm going to do this, I'm just curious).

I'm looking for a programming language

    Posted: 05 Aug 2019 08:12 AM PDT

I'm looking for a programming language that allows me to create an accounting program/software for my company and I don't know where to start or what language should I learn so please help me with choosing a language
I've already learned an intro to python and I haven't seen anything that would create such program. Plus I need it to be user friendly because the accountant on my company knows nothing about programming.

    Thanks.
