Where can I learn about video compression?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2019 01:36 PM PDT

    Hi,

I'm building an application that requires users to upload videos that can be on the longer side. I'm having a lot of memory issues with my server as I'm just uploading the plain files.

I'd like to learn where I can compress the files before upload rather than making the users do it.

I am already at my max in terms of how much I can spend so I can't really upgrade the server any more than I already have or pay to use an api of an image compression service. However I do have time on my hands, and I'd like to build this myself.

Can anyone point me in the direction of video compression 101? Or even better, a free API to compress and upload video to S3 (I know I'm dreaming).

    Thanks everyone!

[Showoff Saturday] Speedy Portfolio Page (Design / Dev)

    Posted: 27 Jul 2019 12:53 PM PDT

I have to admit, I'm not the type that likes to "show off". But I just finished my new portfolio page redesign which utilizes no frameworks or plugins and no server-side code on purpose (not a fan of PHP).

It still has a few kinks here and there and would love to know if you fellow skilled developers can find more.

On initial load, the site comes to about 800KB not minified and I spent around 3 months on this. The focus was on scalability, so the JavaScript code allows for quick iterations and build-out of more pages in the near future. Still trying to figure out how to serve video files faster.

I'm a graphic designer and front-end web developer that is now trying to learn React and Node.

What do you guys think? Feedback is paramount. Comments are appreciated.

[Showoff Saturday] Traffic Model in Node JS used to determine optimal lane changing strategy

    Posted: 27 Jul 2019 04:58 AM PDT

Can self-driving cars save us time in traffic? If so, how much? I set out to answer this question by building a traffic model to simulate human behaviour on congested, multi-lane roads.

In this first article of a two-part series, I use the traffic model to determine whether changing lanes in congested traffic is a zero-sum game. Please have a look and let me know what you think!

    Recommended frameworks for rusty developer

    Posted: 27 Jul 2019 10:10 AM PDT

I want to make a website to digitize and host my grandmother's old recipes for family. I looked at a few existing packages for this and wasn't the most enthused about them.

I decided to try and make my own but would like to not start from scratch again. I looked at a few frameworks like Vue, but found it was just a front end.

Are there any frameworks that encompass front and back ends that you recommend? Something that has modules to handle things like logging in, securing access to pages and what not?

Am I just not seeing them? Is there a framework that pairs with Vue/react/angular well enough? What would you use for this type of a project.

I hope this isn't too general, but if more details are needed, I will try to come up with some more specifics. I have experience in JS, PHP, and MySQL. But my UI's are (comparitivly) terrible and I am more or less just self taught for one off pages. This would be my first larger project, but am not a noob to programming in general.

    Thanks

[Showoff Saturday] I made a social media like web app that is focused on gaming clips. GetCLIPD.io allows you to upvote, comment, or submit clips from twitch, youtube, or streamable. Would love some feedback.

    Posted: 27 Jul 2019 12:03 PM PDT

I have been working on this for about a year.

The inspiration for this app came from my favorite part of reddit, the gaming clips that people post.

Twitch already has a "clips" section but it has no rating system and much of it is random segments so its difficult to find good clips at times.

This is what I have tried to remedy. You can submit clips from Twitch clips, Youtube, or Streamable.

If you are into gaming and clips like me, sign up and post some clips.

    Feedback welcome!

    [Help]Scheduling with login

    Posted: 27 Jul 2019 03:33 PM PDT

    Hey,

I have extremely basic understanding of web development and so on, but need to create a schedule-type website, where you log in, and you gain access to a monthly schedule.

Now, what I want to know is, in what language should I write such a thing in, to make it relatively easy, and safe? I don't want to learn about something and then realize there is something objectively better than what I was planning to do it.

What is the best practice of creating my own CSS Theme/Template?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2019 03:31 PM PDT

I want to make a CSS theme or template that can be used for any web projects.

Let's say if I want to build a web app with React and want to apply my theme,

what are the properties that I need and how should I apply the .css?

Do I just create a single .css and place it in my root folder and just treat it as a global stylesheet?

learnt the basics , What to do next ?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2019 03:14 PM PDT

So i am a beginner at webdev . I started watching tuts on youtube on HTML/CSS and then jumped to Javascript , but the thing is tutorials on youtube only teaches you the basics and in most cases you have to enroll on their courses on sites like Udemy etc, I would love to pay to learn but the thing is i'm broke rn and could not really afford to enroll myself on those courses. so what options do I have left? are there any free courses of intermidiate level available on the internet or any projects I can work on to polish my skills?

Those of you that are employed with a degree, what degree do you have?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2019 02:41 PM PDT

A common sentiment that I see shared that even though a degree is not required for this career field it definitely helps and you should obtain one if you can.

I am in the military and one of the reasons why I joined was to finish school and get my CS degree. This has been my plan for a while but I have also been told that even though getting a degree helps, getting a CS degree can be a bit of overkill for a career in web development.

The only reason why I chose Computer Science over other majors is that it gives me the best chance of getting a job but it is also one of the most math-heavy majors which is discouraging at times because I have struggled with math my whole life. There are other majors I am interested in that relates to the career field (IT, MIS, IS, Marketing) but I don't know how much they will help me when it comes to looking for a job.

I do know that your portfolio is the most important thing but I do not want to waste the gi bill.

Restricting access to a beta branch subdomain

    Posted: 27 Jul 2019 10:46 AM PDT

I am using Laravel if that provides any extra options of how to achieve this. I have a live production git branch that I host on site.com. I also want to have a beta git branch hosted on beta.site.com, but somehow restrict that to certain users. I want them both to use the same database. What are some ways to go about doing this?

I can probably do something with user roles, assigning 'beta' to a few users and then use middleware to restrict access. Is there a simple way to specify that in Laravel? Only apply a middleware to a subdomain?

I could also implement some sort of password up front the first time a user tries to access beta.site.com, and give that password only to select users. I wouldn't even know how to start that.

    Any other thoughts?

I don't want to be able to see my users' data. How do I accomplish this with encryption?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2019 10:08 AM PDT

I have a web application that hosts sensitive information. I don't want to be able to see my users' projects, so I'd like to use encryption so that only the users can see their own projects.

    Here's the tricky part:

    • I have team pages, where everyone on the team can see the team projects.

How do I accomplish this? Using OAuth for authentication, so using the authentication password for in-browser decryption is not an option, which leaves having an additional password per project or user. But then the team issue is a pain! What about in-browser crypto - has anyone worked with this?

What data can I not store in a database?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2019 01:20 PM PDT

    Hi

I'm creating a blogging engine that I'll be using to host my own blogs. I'm wondering what data that I can, and cannot store. I'm based in Europe, so I have GDPR to deal with.

    For example,

    • I store every click on a post as a view article, can I store the IP address so I can count unique views?.
    • I store if they click on one one of my affiliate links.
    • I detect which country they are viewing from and show them affiliate links with the correct domain. For example, if a visitor is from the USA, I have affiliate links that point towards Amazon.com, if they are from the UK, the link points towards Amazon.co.uk.

There will be no user accounts. The only user account is mine.

Hoping the genius of r/webdev can help (correcting margin on left/right aligned images wordpress)

    Posted: 27 Jul 2019 01:20 PM PDT

Here is my issue and details posted on stackoverflow - The resolutions provided fix it but screw up images that are not left/right aligned and cause the text to overlap images in mobile.

Here is what I found to fix the problem but its far from Ideal.

    .post-1996 .entry-content p:nth-of-type(1) { margin-top: -1em; }

I would have to manually enter that over and over for each specific post. Wouldn't that make my stylesheet overly large and cause loading issues in the long run?

Hope someone can help solve this problem! Here are a couple more posts to highlight the ugly space (desktop) ex1 ex2
