Days where you feel like you’ve achieved nothing. Posted: 16 Jul 2019 07:32 AM PDT Do you guys ever have days where you spend hours upon hours trying to code a feature but end up right back where you started, or perhaps with little progress? I feel like shit when this happens because it can feel like a waste of time. Time is precious! Sorry, needed to vent. Carry on as you were. [link] [comments]

Posted: 16 Jul 2019 12:59 PM PDT I'm a web developer with more than 18 years of experience (yes, I'm older than most). Three weeks ago, I was let go. I worked for that Company 5 years and it was a shock for me. They were making structure changes so they needed less developers and more content managers and similar. Even is they said that this move was not performance related, my confidence took a big hit because I was selected from a pool of 12 developers. It was the first time something like this happened to me. In the beginning, I tried to look at the whole thing from an optimistic point of view, new opportunities, possible improvements, ETC. Then I started looking for a new job and, in several occasions, I was asked to show examples of my code. All my code belongs to my last company repository, I lost access to it when I was layoff. I don't have any up-to-date personal code projects. I have a lot of experience but nothing to show for it. I'm slightly dyslexic and really bad with assessments, even if I never had a problem completing a technical task assigned to me. I have been rejected for several positions I applied and not getting any answer from others. Right now, I'm feeling really down and my hope of finding a good job fast is reduced to ashes, but I'll keep trying. At the same time, I'm building my code examples and a Portfolio. Guys, don't forget to have personal coding projects. Also, save those interesting pieces of code from your job, so you can show them when needed. Don't repeat my mistakes. [link] [comments]
When building a new site for a client how do you go about collecting all of the copy/text from them? Posted: 16 Jul 2019 10:32 AM PDT This is a process that feels honestly quite awful and unorganized in my work at the moment. It's typically a lot of emails and questions back and forth. I was considering designing a form to send to my clients with the copy points I need and inputs with character limits but not sure if this a good idea. How are you getting this part of the process done? Care to show any ideas on how to be more efficient and organized with clients during this process? [link] [comments]
Posted: 16 Jul 2019 04:23 PM PDT Examples include: EspalonTequila.com NADDPOD.com There's others, but I can't find them at the moment. What is squarespace bringing to the table that makes its UI stand out in terms of fast, aesthetically pleasing designs? [link] [comments]

Getting a job in an agency? (Montreal) Posted: 16 Jul 2019 03:38 PM PDT Here is my portfolio piece (Laravel & Vue.JS) : https://i.imgur.com/BTUPSzR.png I have a personal project I am proud of built with Laravel and Vue.JS. I also have 2 work experiences (one in BI and the other as a developer). Here is a picture: https://i.imgur.com/BTUPSzR.png I am also in university for software engineering. Is it just a matter of showing up at the agency and selling myself? [link] [comments]

Best way to compare two object values? Posted: 16 Jul 2019 03:26 PM PDT So I received a code test from a company I applied to and I'm wondering if there is a better way to write this code. I have a selectedCards array of objects that looks like this and I need to check and see if the ids of the two objects are the same. Right now I have this which works fine because there can only be two objects in the selectedCards array but I'm worried that its not scalable and they will pick up on that. Should I stick with what I got or try to use something like some or find? [link] [comments]
The least annoying ‘download our app’ popup Posted: 16 Jul 2019 03:26 PM PDT I need to add some kind of 'download our app'-notification/popup to a website. What's the least annoying and/or best looking way to display a message like that according to you? [link] [comments]

Posted: 15 Jul 2019 05:01 PM PDT When it was that mandrill debacle, they stepped up the game and said they were increasing their free tier to 100k per month. They explicitly said in 2016: (web.archive.org cache, they deleted the post)
Then in 2017 they changed their free tier to 15k/month, but said they were still honoring their 100k free plan (Google cache of that blog post, they deleted it now) (also saved it in archive.org)
Today they send a mail saying that they are ending the 100k/month plan (that they promised twice to exist forever), and you should select a paid plan (minimum usd20/month for 50k), else they give you their new free plan, only 500 mails/month. capture of said mail Sparkpost really works great, and 100k/month was too good to be true. But well, they promised twice that they were honoring it, and now they announce they axe it with a cold mail and nothing more. [link] [comments]
Having client do requests with User's 3rd party API key? Posted: 16 Jul 2019 03:01 PM PDT I am trying to figure out the best way to do this. I am writing a web app which only runs client side, no back end. In essence the app is a visualizer for the responses from a 3rd party API. Each user would provide their own API key and the app would make the API calls on their behalf, then visualize the responses client side. Is it ok to store the key in plain text client side? Do I store it encrypted client side and then decrypt it for every API call? I don't want to store the keys in a back end where the user would log in and then I would retrieve the key. Instead the user would need to provide the key new every time they use the app. The only calls the app makes to the wider net is to this API (not counting calls to CDNs for resources when the app is first loaded). Just asking for some opinions/advices about school schedule. Posted: 16 Jul 2019 11:07 AM PDT So as the title says I'm asking what people here think about the schedule that my school provided for the rest of the year. I'm on a two year web development degree and this is the one year mark in to the degree. (The first year we [imho] squandered on mainly customer service. Other things we were taught were virtual machines, hardware [building a pc etc.], security, Microsoft 365 [literally a month spent on just how to use the basic softwares], ISO and other standards and ip configuration) oh and how to be an entrepreneur. Pretty much it tech stuff. Now they give us 13 days to learn about databases and SQL, then 2 days to build a database and 6 days to manage one before we have the test about how to build/manage a database. Is this reasonable or not? Then they give us 6 days to learn about web software, 9 days on HTML and CSS, 2 days on wordpress and 9 days on how to build software (testing, project management, UI/UX and agile software development) and then we get 5 days to make a web software or a web site that's supposed to be for a company. Is this reasonable? I really jumped on this degree because I want to get out of my old job and developing softwares has always intrigued me. And this was sold as a software developer degree but it changed to be a web developer one about six months in. I don't really care as long as I get through and learn something I can get a job with and a foot into the field and for the future possibility of getting a higher degree. [link] [comments]
Maple - A Basic Sass Site Boilerplate Posted: 16 Jul 2019 02:48 PM PDT Hi all! I'm here hoping to receive feedback on my Sass Boilerplate repo called Maple. It is a basic Sass site/file/folder structure designed to get you up and running as quickly as possible. It is organized using the 7-1 folder structure popularized by Hugo Giraudel. This site structure is meant as a general starting point for building your next Sass based site. Feel free to remove any content you don't want need and update the things you do! Some of things included are:
Please check out Maple and please provide feedback on what to include/update/remove/ etc. I am still early on in my web development journey, and there are definitely some long term goals I have in mind with this repo. I want to add more features surrounding animations, functions, flexbox, grid, and more. I am still learning them now but I will add some of those when I can! Let me know what you think! My intent was to include as many of the basics you always do when setting up a new project, and removing those mundane steps as much as possible so you can get going asap. [link] [comments]
Posted: 16 Jul 2019 02:34 PM PDT Hello all! First time in this forum so please forgive me if anything I do here is wrong. A bit about me, I have very minimal experience in creating web pages with HTML, very basic. So I need help with coming up with some ideas for a project i'm about to endeavor. Below is a brief explanation of what i'm aiming to complete. I'd like to create a website where people can donate funds, and then the funds be distributed to those in need of said funds, (essentially like go fund me), where there's a main donation page, where people can pledge any amount they'd like, this money then would go into a pool of funds, which would not be touched by anyone except me. Then there would be a separate page for a type of forum where people could post requests or perhaps just a form to fill out. On that page they would have to submit a request for why they need the funds, and other general basic information. Based off the information they provide, our staff would then review the information and make a decision on whether to release a certain amount of funds to that person, or deny their request. All of that is pretty basic and I should be able to figure that out no problemo. My 2 main problems are as follows; A. Actual receiving/distributing the funds (I'm assuming I could set up a paypal account for this and then provide a simple store on the website for people to select a donation amount and then the funds go into the pp acct.), B. How would I stop someone from doing more than one request per given time frame? What options do I have to prevent someone from say creating an alt acct with a different email and then making another request? Finally, since I do have limited experience, and not a lot of that green paper, what options do I have in terms of creating the site for dirt cheap or free (preferably the latter)? I don't want a POS Wix site. Any help would be greatly appreciated, sorry that this is a lot of information, just trying to do good for my community. If you need more information, I am happy to provide it. [link] [comments]
Converting an old Access application (SQL Server Database) to react app - Questions Posted: 16 Jul 2019 02:29 PM PDT My company has been building and maintaining an Access app for many years. The app uses Access as a to display and manipulate the information that is lives in a Microsoft SQL database. I would like to convert this application into a react application but I am not sure what the best way to access the data would be. In the past I have written some small Rest API handlers (Done with golang) to take the data that I need and put it into a rest endpoint. This works well as I can define the data that I want or need and then handle it with react. Although I know this method will work I would like to explore the option of querying the data directly because we already have all of the correct SQL queries written inside of the access application. So I guess my questions are 1) Can my react app access Microsoft SQL data directly? 2) Is there any reasons why I would not want to do this? 3) Is there any easy ways to expose microsoft SQL as react or graphql endpoints? I am also not married to react but I cannot divorce SQL in this instance. So if there are any other ways of turning an access application into a web application that I am not aware of...
