New free audio pack featuring 200+ unique metallic sounds and thumps along with over 20 original drum loops.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 09:38 AM PDT

You can check out the pack right here: https://gum.co/bb_Maike use the code free_mashup to reduce the price to $0 for the month of April. More info on the pack and some example sounds can be found here: https://youtu.be/UtDuEYb4jVA

Hello friends! I'm really excited to get this pack out to you all. It was made as a collaboration with YouTuber Maike Watson. Maike posts some amazing videos about the creative process and how to overcome your fears and doubts as a musician.

This pack contains over 200 samples from both Maike and myself. Then we took those samples and mashed them up into original drum loops! This was the first time I have made drum loops without making a song to go with them; it was a lot of fun.

These sounds are public domain (Creative Commons 0). You are free to enhance, reuse, remix, or do whatever with these files. Obviously, linking back to the pack or dropping my name in your liner notes is encouraged, but not required.

Can someone explain why most modern games have such high input lag?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 02:14 AM PDT

    Hello /r/gamedev!

I'm on a quest to find out why we are going backwards on one of the most important fundamentals: fast, responsive controls.

~100ms of input lag is what I'd expect from an old flash game, so why is it in games like Street Fighter V and Smash Bros. Ultimate regardless of controllers/interface used?

The first thing that comes to mind and what I read in general is that it's done for performance reasons, but I don't see how polling for inputs on every frame would be significant enough to reduce overall performance.

I hope someone can shed some light on this :)

25 Years Since The Release Of Final Fantasy VI – Looking Back At The Passion

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 10:30 AM PDT

You guys know of any good beginner graphics guides?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 10:13 AM PDT

Like, I'm just completely lost when it comes to graphics.

For example, I downloaded the space shooter graphics pack from KenneyNL, and the backgrounds are only 256x256

It's not obvious to me if I can use that somehow or not.

Is it meant to be tiled? If I stretch it, it's low res. If I click tile, it isn't very fun to look at

Maybe there's another option I'm not aware of? They're png files

Why would an image meant to be used as a background be only 256x256?

Thanks guys I appreciate the help ☺️

    How to learn game design?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 06:44 AM PDT

Hi, r/gamedev! I'm a game developer-in-training currently taking game development as my major in university.

Fortunately, I was able to pick up programming pretty quickly so I don't have many problems there, my problem is actually game design. I really want to be able to be a game designer as well, but I'm not sure how. When I first entered university and began a pseudo-game development studio with my friends I had a lot of ideas but they were either bad ideas or way too big in terms of scale. My friends say that I can be a game designer but the problem is that I don't play enough games (which is true, I love game development but I'm not really the most avid of gamers).

Is it true that I'm not good at game design because I don't play enough games? How do I learn game design? I'm trying to start a personal project for practice but I can't seem to get ANY idea for games.

What’s do you prefer for learning game dev: videos or books?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 07:00 AM PDT

Understanding this entirely can be boiled down to "it depends how you learn best," it does seems as though game dev is a bit unique in that you may miss out on specifics of a game engine by watching videos and tutorials.

Would it be safe to say recent books are up to date enough that it would be worth it to read them? Seems as though the nuance is not caught in videos, so reading to catch it may be best. Curious to hear your thoughts.

Also if anybody has recommendations, would love some! Have started some Unity dev.

Got a ready prototype as university-project over 1 year with a partner. Want to send it in for fund-approval. Partner does not seem interested anymore.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 06:33 AM PDT

Anyone know how this goes down legally?

My partner does not answer any mails or messages and I couldn't get a hold of them so far. I definitely want to continue the project in case it gets approved for a fund, but at one point during the point they were like "I don't really care for it. It was my idea though, so I won't let you do this alone" - Not exactly in a serious manner, but I guess there was some truth to it . I already talked with a professor and he simply advised me to let them have a lifelong 25% share if I send it in because its based on their idea, but to me that notion sounds ridiculous if the partner does not want to have anything to do with it.

I'll gladly give away a fund portion if it gets them out, but so far I'm mainly afraid if I have to be afraid of something if I want to get this funded without their approval. Best case would be if they would just answer and decide to work on it in case of a fund , but alas I am still trying to get contact...

    Question about Logging

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 07:45 AM PDT

I decided I'm going to try to create my own engine for educational purposes, and I have a question about logging. Is it standard practice to log to the console rather than logging to a text file? What are the implications of logging to a text file?

Best US cities for game development

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 12:02 PM PDT

I live in Austin Texas, I was raised here and I am 18, considering a career in the game industry. I am told that it is one of the greatest places for game development in the country, with companies like Bethesda, Blizzard, and EA being here. The cost of living is a bit high here, and I don't think I want to work for EA... I'm wondering, for the future, what are some of the best cities to live in, in the United States, for a beginner in the game industry?

Does not making games in my free time mean I shouldn’t become a game dev?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 11:31 AM PDT

In my current point in life, I'm in school for computer science and I am looking into game development as my career choice. I don't have a part time job(right now) so outside of class I have a large amount of free time. My big concern is that I have all of this free time that if used to make some games(in unity or something) I could probably make some really cool stuff, but instead I spend all of my time playing video games instead. I don't think I should change degrees but I'm worried if game dev is not for me.

I know that I enjoy making things for others to enjoy, and in the past making a game for class and having my family and friends test and give feedback and hearing them enjoy it has been my favorite thing. I also spend a lot of time during assignments coming up with cool ideas to put into them outside of what's required for the course. But once the assignment is submitted, even if I come up with cool new ideas, I don't toy around with the game anymore.

TL'DR: I enjoy when I'm making games, but with the tons of free time I have I don't use it to make games. Should I keep going with game dev?

I would greatly appreciate any opinions especially from someone who may have relatable experience

Some Questions on 3D Animation and Rigging in Game Development

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 10:49 AM PDT

I'll try and stick to the point I have a habit of going off on tangents. So my knowledge on the aspects of game development are predominantly in the programming areas, though I am able to 3D model and have rigged models before. However I have never used 3D models, skeletons and animations with game engines and am looking for some generic information on this subject.

    1. What sort of animations are needed for say a basic platformer? Most importantly what animations are needed for movement? Do you need an animation for each direction, plus changing direction?
    2. Are there any good free collections of animations for a basic biped that I could use?
    3. If not are there any decent methods of creating skeletal animations that are relatively quick other than motion capture?

    Thanks in advance

Don't know what I want to do

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 10:35 AM PDT

Okay, first I don't really know if this is a question. It's more just me talking about my thoughts.

So I really want to work with game dev. I'm young so I can really choose what I want to do. Thing is, I don't know.

Lately, I've really gotten into making concept art. I like concept art, but I realized, that's only really used in the early stages of making a game. Graphics / 3D modelling is also fun, but I don't know if I like it as much as concept art. The game design itself looks really cool. The whole coding, putting together indie game thing. But I honestly don't know.

    Game Development Survey

    Posted: 07 Apr 2019 11:11 PM PDT

    Hello Fellow Game Developers!

I am doing a school project that requires me to collect data on a topic I'm passionate about so I chose game development! If you could fill out this approximately 3-5 minute survey it would mean the world to me. No personal details will be collected, just general information so no need to worry about that!

Huge thanks to anyone and everyone that takes 3 minutes out of their day to help me out!
