Web performance or how to build fast websites: from Google expert

    Hey community!

I'm Stacy, I create educational projects for developers. Now I'm launching the first one in English, Doge Talks — something like TEDx for developers. Basically it's online talks with Q&A session, but with experts from Google, Microsoft, Babel etc.

I got into an accelerator, trying to win a trip to New York and the first funding. Being 23y.o., I've invested ~$60K of own savings in my Ukrainian startup. Now I need to validate this idea with foreign audience to get the funding.

Here's the first announced talk. It's about making fast websites from Google expert. If you think it's promising, please, sign up. It means a world to me! As great speakers love the idea, but business people don't.

    https://dogetalks.com/web_performance

this is me giving a talk 🙂

Also you can ask me anything about education for devs, CIS region development culture and startups.

How to Deal with Low Price website Development competitors?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 03:43 PM PDT

I have seen web development companies are creating websites for just 100$ and they offer lots of free services like domain, hosting, content, logo, basic SEO and unlimited Revisions.

I am a small web design agency and I don't know how to get clients with the help of Google ads when same visitors see these companies are offering websites in just 100$.

    Any suggestions?

Help|Change a live site using CSS or Jquery

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 08:23 AM PDT

Is there a way to change a live site (that isn't mine) using CSS or Jquery? For instance if a site is organizing data in a way that is confusing, is it possible for me to write some sort of add on that changes the format and other things on my side? Instead of hoping the devs of that site will make the changes.

The best example I can think of is the Reddit Enhancement Suite.

    I appreciate the help!

Dynamic application with lots of data update

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 10:17 AM PDT

    Hi fellow programmers.

I got some time to spare so I wanted to create an app, where I wanted to create a room-like structure. Users should be able to join and leave these rooms and for someone who's in the 'lobby' room numbers (like current number of users in the room) should be updated dynamically.

So basically I've been thinking React, Redux, NodeJS, MongoDB. My question is, however, will this setup be able to handle such amounts of data being sent, deleted and modified so quickly? Because I'm guessing each room would have to be in the database, I'd need an API for that database and I'd need to make requests for stuff inside it. Then this data would have to be resent as it updates, so an user can see that a room is full now (so it updates before user interacts with it).

Should the data update with a constant delay, e.g. update every 1 second or so? Is that a good practice?

What is the best way of creating such apps? Apps like, for example, CSGO Roulette (Don't worry, that's not my goal, but it's a good example, cause it has a lot of data updating with many users seeing changes at once)? My app will be more like portfolio kind of thing, but I'd still like to use best tools and practices available at the moment.

    Thanks!

Software Consultancy Job/Co-op a good idea for starting career with no other industry experience?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 04:12 PM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I am currently pursuing a degree in computer engineering with an emphasis in software development(currently a junior). This year I did a total deep dive into the world of web-development and fell in love. Learning really a bunch of the technologies full-stack web developers should know. My school has been pretty impressed with the work I have been doing and wants to hire me on engineering co-op (7 month extended internship) as a software consultant. This means I will likely be the sole developer working to scope/develop projects/webapps for academia. I would most likely be the sole developer for these projects and responsible for transitioning their ideas into value adding products.

Is software consultancy experience valuable if most my experience so far comes from engineering projects at school? I am also curious as to how a year of software consultancy(with multiple contracts) sounds to other web-development companies if I plan to apply elsewhere after graduation? I would appreciate any and all of your thoughts.

Hiring managers: how to structure a "career switcher" resume with 2 years of production experience?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 11:59 AM PDT

Two years ago I realized I was unfulfilled in my 10+ year marketing career, fell in love with coding, and after six months of full time self-study I was able to find a lightly funded start-up that hired me as their only full stack dev. (They paid me very little at first and I got the experience - win win.)

Now two years later I have 2 production apps under my belt with thousands of active users and a 3rd app on the way, all with the same company (and me as the solo dev).

I'm very confident in my skills, love the crap out of coding more than ever, and want to level up by working somewhere with seniors who I can learn from.

The only problem is that my brain is burnt out at the end of the day so I have no active GitHub or side projects to show off and those apps I've built are totally close sourced.

My question: is there a specific way to outline my resume as a "career switcher with production experience who loves to learn" that would make you extra intrigued and want to call me in for a mid-level interview? Emphasize the career switching aspect, downplay the previous career, something else, etc?

    Thanks!

If I'm building my own site, should I do all the coding myself, or should I use a wordpress theme and edit it?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 03:34 PM PDT

I'm looking to start a full project for the first time. Unlike normal, this will not be a part of something as a way to test myself, I want to make the real deal, my own site based off my own idea, but I'm not too sure how to go about it.

I have a lot of experience with Wordpress/Shopify as an ecommerce retailer. I have a lot of experience with HTML, CSS and JS, and am starting now to learn PHP and SQL. But I have NEVER edited a theme in either of those CMS'.

So I'm confused what the 'average' dev does... I know there isn't a stock theme built for what I'm doing, in fact, I'm not sure there's a theme that's even close.

But does that mean I should build everything myself and just use CPanel and GoDaddy? Or should I use a theme as close to what I want then edit it where I see fit?

I will be selling products eventually, so I think editing a theme is the way to go because if I host on wordpress, I get the CMS and don't have to do as much backend stuff on my own.

I guess you could assume I'm building a site like Newegg or Amazon, which may seem similar to stock themes in wordpress on the surface, but there are many differences I want from a stock theme, such as mandatory fields in the description, a custom search filter, different type of product list, etc...

I'm willing to put in the work, I just have no idea what to do and am looking for guidance.

    Thank you.

Do I need SSR? What framework to use for it?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 02:58 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I have created a mobile app (with flutter). I now want to create a web application in addition to it. I'm currently wondering what tech stack I should use. The app is something similar to this scenario:

The app is a collection of multiple games. At the Home page you get a list of all the available games. You can click on a game and it routes to an about page of the game with more information about it. These pages need to be SEO friendly, meaning when I search for a game name in google, the detail page about the game should show up in the search results.

On the game information page, I can start a game. This routes to another page where you can play the game. At this point the SEO isn't that important.

For a database/backend I use firebase. The Games are documents in a Firebase collection.

I heard Google is quite good at indexing single page applications but I'm not sure if its good enough for my goals and I don't want to take any chances. If I would go with a normal SPA the content would be loaded after the page is served, so to my knowledge it won't be considered for SEO.

If that's true, I would need to use Server-Side Rendering, right? What exactly is the difference to a universal JavaScript app? Could using a Static Site Generator also be a viable option?

What Frameworks do you recommend? I have experience in Angular, but I tried Angular Universal and wasn't very happy with it. So maybe React + Next.js or Vue and Nuxt.js? Any other options that a quick to learn? The Framework should have simple state management and should be easy to use with firebase (which is why I like angular).

Any opinions and recommendations are appreciated!

    CSS tips for programmers

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 01:29 PM PDT

There are situations you can replace your JS, PHP or any other language code to CSS.

Useful replacements I have recently found:

    • using text-overflow ellipsis instead of your own logic in programming language - for short texts it may be useful
    • using text-transform to capitalize

Most of frameworks or template engines offer support for similar behavior, but can be handled purely in CSS.

I would like to extend this list to more interesting tips.

Do you have some you want to share with others? :)

    Seeking static photo gallery generator

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 01:12 PM PDT

Would anyone know of a good program to build static photo galleries from a html/js/css template and pull from a photo directory or place the code in that directory for hosting? I'd prefer it to be written in python, ruby, or bash and support building thumbnails and maybe pages for the intermediate sized images that'd link to the full size via the template.

Server side rendering and seo question

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 09:18 AM PDT

We have a new page in production, essentially a really large table of product offerings ~300 entries. The design we were given was not lazy loading friendly. We wanted to server side render so that the products get indexed and so someone with a slow network gets something to look at before the JavaScript bootstraps. (Angular 6) we are getting dinged because of excessive Dom size from our SEO consulting company, due to the complexity of the table design. I feel like I'm trying to have my cake and eat it too. How do I balance these 2?

    Greenfield vs Legacy enjoyment

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 09:16 AM PDT

I'm realizing now after five years in the industry that I have an extremely difficult time getting motivated about fixing and working on legacy code.

Granted, I know it's a massive part of any job, and I'm not unsuccessful at completing tasked work and getting things done, I just don't enjoy it.

At my current job there's a certain expectation that during downtime in between sprints and scheduled work that you pick up some tech debt and do your best to improve the code base, but I can't seem to bring myself to care about any particular part of the codebase.

I'm curious to hear about your work experiences. Do you relate to me? Have you figured out strategies to make this easier? Help!

    Web Developer Blog Options

    Posted: 28 Mar 2019 12:31 PM PDT

Looking through the search results it seems there is a mix bag of folks suggesting Jekyll, Wordpress and a couple others. I work almost exclusively in MERN (Mongo/SQL, Express, React, Node), based on that stack what is the suggested layout for a personal blog site? Do people really care if you use Wordpress for a personal blog as a Web Developer? Is it worth the seemingly large time commitment it would take to build one from the ground up?

I'm leaning towards Wordpress for the ease of use and just to get something out there, but it comes with so much stigma that I'm reluctant to do so. If I could just whip together something quick in my novice tech stack that would be ideal.

I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on this and what libraries or frameworks (if any) you would use just starting out your Web Dev career with a limited stack.
