What websites do you use for design inspiration?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 08:53 AM PDT

Like many, I find design to be the most difficult aspect of web development. I'm wondering if anybody has any good websites that they use to get ideas/build off of for web design?

    Thanks!

Getting an HTTP 403 error from Google Places API when getting images for certain places and I have no idea why. Half the images load and half the images don't which makes me wonder if I'm doing something wrong or there's something wrong with their API.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 05:14 AM PDT

This doesn't always happen - sometimes all the images load correctly and I get no errors, and sometimes I get the errors and only half the images load. I'd assume if there was a problem with my code, I would always get the errors and not just occasionally. On the other hand, I doubt Google would allow for their API to be experiencing problems so often.

I've recently started to get my feet wet into web development and I was wondering what you guys use for a text editor, also extensions. I'm stuck between using vscode and intelliJ.

Any modern equivalent to css zengarden?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 10:18 AM PDT

Backend dev here. I was looking to try and improve my CCS skills. I thought checking out http://www.csszengarden.com/ would be good, but I realise that the site is quite old now and not responsive. Are there any similar concepts that are more up to date?

What laptops do you guys own? I'm looking on getting a good laptop for programming on the go and need some suggestions.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 07:34 AM PDT

Hello guys. As the title say I'm looking into getting a laptop and need some suggestions.I plan to use it as a main work laptop since I will move to another country and will probably have no access to a pc for a couple of months.

I'm currently looking at the following laptops:

    Thinkpad t480s - 900 euro (16gb version with i5 8350U) New
    Dell Latitude 7480 - 14" - Core i7 7600U - 570 Euro used
    Dell 7250 16gb ram i5 gen 5 - 279 euro used
    thinkpad t440 CPU i5 4300M 8gb ram - 250euro used

I have never owned a i5 laptop and don't know if I need the latest processor to do programming.I use linux as main system and my editor of choice its quite lightweight (nvim). Since I only need it for work I don't want something which has a gpu integrated. What I mostly want its a good keyboard. Nice screen and most importantly no heat through the keyboard.

My last laptop was an macbook 2010 which I was given as a gift and that thing was a pain to do programming on. Not slow but the cooling keep passing the heat through the keyboard.

    Would love some suggestions. Thanks

After lurking in this sub, I have decided to build my first website. Did I leave anything out?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 03:20 AM PDT

Goal: build a website for my projects using python/django for both front end and back end

    Projects:

    • something to do with statistics(i.e. user enters information, back-end processes, results are displayed)

    • create an audio looper(i.e. link a youtube vid, audio url, etc. The application will then process the file and allow the user to select loop start/stop and also control speed. I know a million of these already exist, but mine will eliminate the need for saving a file and then loading.

    Plan:

    • go to namecheap and buy a domain for $8.88 per year. I am going to use a ".com" url

    • buy a $5 droplet from digital ocean. Since I will be the only frequenter during the development process, I don't need a lot.

    • link my namecheap domain to digital ocean

    • secure digital ocean w/ ssl certificate via letsencrypt(free)

    • begin development using python/django(free). not going to use wordpress since I want to learn both front-end and back-end

EDIT: Wow, did not expect so many replies! So many more ideas. Thanks!

Building my portfolio, any advices ?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 11:29 AM PDT

Hello folks, I'm going to apply to several companies this April as I need an intership in Web dev to finish this semester.

I got some personal projects under my belt and wanted to make them available within a simple website.

    http://www.louislaiolo.fr/

Here it is. Still a work in progress, and before adding it to my actual CV and futures mails, I'd be glad if you could tell me what's downright terrible and somewhat unprofessional. The goal there was to be minimalist but efficient.

The CSS comes from a template, and is suiting my needs. I'm now listening to you.

Thanks to anyone willing to use their time for this !

    Learning React right after Javascript

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 12:44 PM PDT

I have recently learned the basics of HTML, Javascript and CSS in a 3-month training. That's the first level for web development, and the second level is about React JS, so I'm not sure whether I should hop into the second level already or take some time to learn more about js at home. My friend recommended that I take a pause for 2 or 3 months in which I develop my js skills furthermore, but I'm still hesitating. PS: I'm sorry if this is not the thread, I really don't know where to ask such question.

    Equivalent to /etc/hosts on iPhone?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 04:08 PM PDT

I have a need to hit my local dev environment running on my MacBook from my iPhone. But I need to do it with the IP aliased as my dev domain for CORS reasons. I've done all sorts of searching about this, and the most promising advice I found was to use an app called Weblock. It has a redirect tool which should be functionally equivalent to adding entries in a hosts file. But after buying it and trying everything imaginable within the app's settings, I have had no luck.

Have any of you successfully achieved this?

    Thanks!

Trying to get google API key for client.

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 03:35 PM PDT

My client is trying to fix an issue with google maps on his wordpress site.

The issue is that he has no API key and I am trying to set it up for him but to get a key, google needs business and credit card information. So I can set it up myself using my own credit card but then I will always be the owner of that API key and tied to his website. If I give him access to the account, he can see my credit card info.

Or I can ask my technologically impaired client to set up an account himself so that he can use his own information and then tell me what his key is. But he would also have to mess around with securing the key and other complicated things I know he doesnt want to do.

What is the right way here to set up a google maps API key for my client without one person having access to the others financial information?

I am looking for a free tool to help me with CSS

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 03:26 PM PDT

Hello, sorry for my bad English.

I need a tool (to mockup) to help me this way: for example I create a box with text inside and then shadow in the box, the tool should export the padding that has the box, that generates in CSS the code of the shadow , etc.

I need this type of tools because it is difficult for me to design webs, I understand CSS but I do not understand it in depth or I am not able to transmit what I want to CSS

Good examples of real-world (interaction/graphic) design project case-studies?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 03:26 PM PDT

Looking for good examples of "project logs" – no matter how small – with problem definitions and explorations of several possible solutions.

Seeing final solutions is nice but often not all that helpful. The actual problem-solving and decision-making process is often much more interesting.

Interaction design, graphic design, typography, React-component API design... everything remotely related to web design is welcome.

For example, Aaron Draplin designing a logo. Text and images are fine too.

    Suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Will using an iframe to embed an online ordering service work on my website?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 03:16 PM PDT

We own a restaurant and we have a company that provides an online ordering platform on their website that is compatible with our POS system. My question is: if I use an iframe to embed that online ordering webpage on the restaurant's website, will the iframe maintain all functionality? Additionally, can I apply css styling to the iframe? Thanks in advance for any replies.

    Next.js vs Nuxt.js

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 02:12 AM PDT

I'm currently planning to develop a SSR web app. I'm not sure if I should choose Nuxt.js for vue.js or Next.js for React. I'm not experienced in vue or react, I'm coming from angular. Does anyone has experience with both? What are the differences?

How can I tap into my customers POS systems to allow them to upload all of their products to my site?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 02:31 PM PDT

I am building a platform b2b website where I am looking to find a way to allow one side of the platform to be able to upload all their produts that they stock at their physical location to the website. It would be great if I can find a way to be able to tap into their system so all of their skus, inventory levels, and pricing automatically uploads to the website. Does anyone have any idea how this can work? I know websites like leafly, and leafbuy.com, offer something similar and that this can be done.

Help with creating a functional contact form

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 01:49 PM PDT

    Hi,

So I've been going at this some time trying to create a functional contact form. first time doing so tried pairing my html code with php and it's currently not working out well. everytime the submit button is pressed on the contact form it takes me to contact.php with is a blank screen and also not receiving the contact form either. my understanding is that it's suppose to just process the request on the backend while keeping the visitor on the same page. can someone tell me what am i doing wrong. Here's a sample of my code. TY in advance

    contact form

    <form method="post" action="contact.php"> <div class="field half"> <label for="name">Name</label> <input type="text" name="name" id="name" required/> </div> <div class="field half"> <label for="email">Email</label> <input type="email" name="email" id="email" required/> </div> <div class="field"> <label for="subject">Subject</label> <input type="text" name="subject" id="subject" required> </div> <div <div class="field"> <label for="message">Message</label> <textarea name="message" id="message" rows="4" required></textarea> </div> <ul class="actions"> <li> <input type="submit" value="Send Message" class="button special"/> </li> </ul> </form>

    php code

    <?php if (isset($_POST['submit'])) { $name = $_POST['name']; $subject = $_POST['subject']; $mailFrom = $_POST['email']; $message = $_POST['message']; $mailTo = "receive@domain.com"; $headers = "From: ".$mailFrom; $txt = "You have received an e-mail from ".$name.".\n\n".$message; mail($mailTo, $subject, $txt, $headers); header("Location: index.html"); } ?>
