Posted: 24 Mar 2019 01:05 PM PDT I've been programming for about a decade now and have been teaching others for nearly as long. One phenomenon I experience is that sometimes I get back a lot of questions, most of which could be answered without my help. I realized that one of the reasons is that people don't know any better. That's why I wrote Learn it Yourself and described some basic methods for how you can answer most of your questions and fix most of your bugs without external help (and why you would want that). Hope this will be useful here. Let me know if you know any other beginner techniques—I would be glad to include them, too! [link] [comments] |
Wordpress frontend developer looking to get better Posted: 24 Mar 2019 12:35 PM PDT Hello. I'm a 25 years old guy living in eastern europe, so I hope you'll understand the english mistakes I might make. I've finished my local college, without getting a degree, due to personal problems. Since the end of 2017 I've been working for a small startup ( 6 people) that is mostly doing wordpress sites with divi builder. What I do at work is "somekindof fullstack" stuff, and I feel that that is the problem. In the last year and a half I don't feel that i learned something specific, just bits and bits of everything. So, basically I live with the impression that my skills are not really transferable to another company because I feel that I'm not good at anything specific. Most of the time I'm in charge of pretty much all the aspects of creating a website: design, functionalities, creating tutorials and providing support to the client etc. The design part I'm expected to do by myself, and I'm not a very creative person. I could implement mockups or wireframes, but I have to do it all by myself as we don't have a designer. My colleagues are a bit more creative, and somehow manage to do this, but this part screws me up bigtime. Now the thing is, I want to get better and be able to find a more decent job, but I don't really know which way to take. I like the idea of being a fullstack developer, but with the current structure of doing things in this company I feel that things are not going ok. Manager just expects me to do everything, fast and good, all while I'm being paid 350$ per month. I can't quit even this job for the moment, because of life commitments( I'm still staying with parents, which are sick and old, and if I do, it will do a lot of damage). I'm looking for a plan/route whatever to get better and not feel like a piece of shit that knows nothing. I know php, js, css , wordpress all at a basic level. I've been searching the web and i found the following resources for: FRONTEND : p1xtguides, freecodecamp, 30days js BACKEND : laracasts GENREAL: cs50, learning to use git, codewars Please give me an idea, I feel very lost... Struggling to learn a new language after Python Posted: 24 Mar 2019 09:09 AM PDT Like so many others, I chose Python as my first language and had pretty good success with it - I managed to apply my knowledge at my workplace to a significant extent and I consider myself an advanced-beginner or an intermediate Python programmer. After a while I thought it would be a good idea to try and expand my horizons and learn a new language. However, seeing how different syntax is between languages I feel overwhelmed. Python just makes everything so easy - one line of code can be 10 or more in other language. Everything is so easy to understand and read. I can't even imagine what it takes to learn something like C++ after coming from a comfortable place like Python. I've heard that once you learn one language, learning another one should be a trivial task, since concepts are more or less the same, except the syntax is different. At this point I feel like I'm learning everything from the beginning when going through Golang tutorials. Should this be expected? [link] [comments] |
How to I write some code to find combinations of how rearrange my child’s train set? Posted: 24 Mar 2019 01:05 PM PDT So we recently bought my son a wooden train set - see here for an outline of the pieces included. We were having competitions to see who could build the biggest track without looking at the instructions. But kept finding that it's actually quite tricky to make a large track that is able to connect back on itself correctly. Then that got me thinking, surely there's a way to make a program where you can tell it what pieces of track you have and then it'll spit out options for tracks that you could build. How would I approach this problem? Obviously each piece has a length, angle and a male or female connecter on each end. Some have multiple connections. You would need to have it come up with combinations then have it test if it would be able to connect back to the start to make a closed loop. I have done quite a bit of web/database programming but this is a different ball game and I'm just looking for a nudge in the right direction. Thanks :) [link] [comments] |
Looking For A Buddy To Learn Web Development With HTML/CSS/Javascript Etc. Posted: 25 Mar 2019 12:10 AM PDT Hi Everybody, I've been trying to learn web development off and on for the last year. I'm looking for a friend(s) to continue learning with. The eventual goal would be to be at the point where we are hire-able. Hopefully this could hold us more accountable and prevent procrastination in the learning process. I have used HTML in the past and have the basics down pretty good. My CSS knowledge is pretty beginner, I did a couple courses on it but haven't used it a lot in a while. I've used Bootstrap a bit and also know some Git basics. JavaScript is the main thing that I have been focusing on learning lately. I know some fundamental things to a degree like data types, logical operators, loops, working with arrays and objects, and basic functions but I still feel like I am far off from where I will need to eventually be. If someone is at a similar level that would be great, of course, although it's not necessary. A brief background on me: I'm 30 years old and live in Canada. I'm quite introverted with some social anxiety problems that prevented me from going to post secondary after high school. I like gaming, although don't do much of it these days because of the above :P My goal is to be a self taught web developer, even though that seems like a pipe dream right now. [link] [comments] |
Is Udemy a good source for learning new programming languages? Posted: 24 Mar 2019 11:59 PM PDT I'm a Computer Game Design major at my school and I'm on the engineering track so it's basically game design plus computer science. I want to learn other languages that I'm not so familiar with such a Python but on my own time. I learn better through in person lecture and video but I don't have time to squeeze more classes into my course schedule. Is Udemy good for learning new languages? I've used it for other things and I've loved it so far but how is it for teaching programming languages and now that I'm here, what courses would anyone who learned through Udemy recommend for Python and JavaScript [link] [comments] |
I’m 16 years old with no programming experience eager to build a website. Posted: 24 Mar 2019 07:59 AM PDT I'm looking for advice on what resources I should get & how I should study & practice to build a functional website. Specifically I want the website to have an appointment system where anyone can go & submit an appointment & I will receive a notification to my phone via email. Currently I'm on the verge of buying "Murach's HTML5 & CSS3, 4th edition" book. Once I have the html, css & javascript aspect done, what resources would I need to learn for the back end or server side of the development? How could I accomplish my goal of building said website in 1-2 years? I have plenty of free time, so I'm able to dedicate my time. [link] [comments] |
Need help in mips, creating a toMorse function Posted: 24 Mar 2019 08:08 PM PDT I've written a bit of it but I'm stuck. I don't know how to add a string from an array of strings ammending another string. I forgot how to even access a string in an array of strings in mips. The source code and the spec sheet is in my github repo https://github.com/CjStaal/CST-222-MIPS/tree/master/Projects/Project2 Can anyone please help? I'm desperate. I missed the class where we do this since I had a baby. He went over all this but since I missed it, the project is overdue and I can't ask the professor since it's spring break and he's given me till the end of spring break to hand it in. Plus the third project started. I'm determined to get this done and get an A in the class, since I need to in order to do well for my kid. In appreciate any help. If anyone can tutor, please PM me and we can set up a skype. [link] [comments] |

How do you all deal with unwinding/backtracking? Posted: 24 Mar 2019 11:48 PM PDT What I mean by unwinding/backtracking is this - Suppose you are devising an algorithm for a problem. You divide the problem into many smaller units which are all interdependent on each other. Along the way, as nearly the program is complete, you have a sudden shot of wisdom, like Dr. House, that a unit you previously made could have been implemented in a much better way. And there you are, redoing that unit and all of it's dependent units. I already suffer from anxiety and this has been quite frustrating for me since I started programming. It has been quite a frequent occurrence now. Is it something that you avoid by gaining experience? Or you plan efficiently before hand? If yes, then how? I tried git but then the dilemma arises of how frequently should I commit. I also maintain some common snippets in my book that I think are concise and useful. What are your methods? Also an unrelated question - I can't grasp OOP however hard I try. I just goes off my head. How did you learn it? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 24 Mar 2019 11:34 PM PDT I am in my first year at my new college and my second year of post secondary education overall - I switched institutions to pursue software engineering (I was originally in general sciences.). I have never done any programming, but I excel at math and physics and find programming incredibly interesting. So I took my first course (C++) and failed spectacularly. Now, I have python coming up for the summer as sort of an intro course to the C++ I will be retaking in the fall. Is it a good idea to enrol in an online python course prior to the python course in the summer? I want to become a software engineer more than anything in the entire world, but I just don't know what to do or where to even begin to assess the conceptual obstacles I face when programming [link] [comments] |
(Java) Program runs a method to write to a file, but it runs twice instead of just once. Posted: 24 Mar 2019 11:31 PM PDT I've got this code I've written in java that's basically an AVL tree. I have this 'find' method that checks whether a specific item or data is in one of the nodes within the AVL tree using recursion and it returns that node. It also keeps track of the number of comparisons (called countFn) that are being made while traversing the AVL tree. Right before my 'find' method returns the node it send the comparison count to another method called counter. This method creates a file (AVL_counter) and appends the counter to that file. I have written my code here and have tried to reduce it as much as possible. My issue is that when I run the find method it writes the counter to the file twice instead of once. If someone could please explain to me why it does this or advise me on how I could solve this I would really appreciate it, thanks. the main method in the PowerAVLApp reads a textfile called cleaned data and inserts the first second and third item in every line into the avl tree. the printDateTime method calls the find method from the avl tree. What is this serverless I keep hearing about? Why is it so popular now and what are its benefits? Posted: 24 Mar 2019 05:20 PM PDT I assume an example is something like lambda, that just runs a function periodically given some sort of input that does something desirable. I guess its more efficient than a server because its not always online and only used when it needs to be. [link] [comments] |
[C#] Simple Roll / Flipping A Cylinder Posted: 24 Mar 2019 11:07 PM PDT Hello! I need some help with how to make a cylindrical object do a kind of roll when i double press a key (A and D). Basically what i have so far is a top-down SHMUP kind of game where you play as a battery and have to do this roll kind of thing which flips your positive and negative sides, because there are charging stations on the sides and you have to match the batteries + and - sides to the charge station. I've got most of the other stuff/know how to do it, just not the rolling thing. I'd like the roll to kind of be in an upside down U motion but will take whatever is easiest at this point. (I've been learning programming at uni but i'm still terrible at it and still not confident at all with how to do things right) Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you. [link] [comments] |

Career Advice: Stick with JS/React or switch to C#? Posted: 24 Mar 2019 08:30 AM PDT Currently, Where I live is very Microsoft heavy (SSIS, C# .NET, SQL Server) while I landed a job a few years back working with Javascript (React, Redux) almost exclusively. I occasionally work with our API which is .NET but nothing extensive. I'm at the point now where I'd like to move to a different company because the one I'm at now has no career advancement. My lack of C# knowledge has made this process very difficult, however, I don't really want to learn C# because I love JS/React! Should I just suck it up and learn .NET? [link] [comments] |
