    You probably don’t need a single-page application

Do you like it when a website directs you to a different website by opening a new tab or just using the current tab?

I created an open source site that plays the soundcloud charts using the audio api for visualization

    Posted: 17 Feb 2019 07:07 AM PST

    https://cloudradio.pyxl.cloud

This project is already a little older, but still wanted to introduce it to you. I use the soundcloud API to play the top 50 charts per genre in random order. The browser audio API is also used to visualize the svg graphic a bit :)

Project is written in Laravel and Vue (still version 1 :D) and can be found on GitHub: https://github.com/devfake/cloudradio

Is there a 'standard' way to use shortcuts on websites? Which keys to use/avoid etc?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2019 05:47 AM PST

I need to add shortcuts to a web app and I've not done it before. I wandered if there were any standard best practices for key combinations to use or avoid?

For instance obviously you wouldn't want to use cmd+v because it's the standard for paste, or cmd+t would stop people being able to open new tabs.

There are a few obvious ones but I wandered if this was a problem that has already solved and there were standard new key combinations to use.

Setting up .htaccess to redirect all visitors to another domain except my own IP

    Posted: 17 Feb 2019 10:34 AM PST

    I tried the following:

    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !12.345.6.78 RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} !12.345.6.78$ RewriteRule .*$ http://www.website2.com [R=307,L] </IfModule>

    What am I missing?

    Edit: Tried also including

    RewriteCond %{REMOTE_HOST} !^12\.345\.6\.789

    That did not work either

Adding a reviews section to a website?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2019 10:32 AM PST

    Hi all,

Wondering how I would go around adding a reviews section to a HTML website. I am relatively new to dynamic sites, if this counts as that, so don't really know where to start. Any ideas?

I have a small bit of experience with PHP, but no knowledge of securing forms and how to avoid injections etc.

How would I go around adding a place for a person to leave a name, review, and stars on a site, and then it to publish them?

    I have looked at:

    1. Google My Business integration, but apparently they have deprecated the ability to add it to sites.
    2. PHP, but I have little experience with this, and I would be worried about securing it. We wouldn't be collecting personal info, maybe only location, but obviously it needs to be secure.
    3. JavaScript, something like this: https://codepen.io/jamesbarnett/pen/vlpkh but more advanced. Not sure how to store the data however, I guess I would use an SQL table?

    Thanks in advance!

How do you monitor client sites?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2019 03:52 PM PST

Hello all, I am looking to do some research about how different companies do monitoring for their client's websites. I am mainly interested in external monitoring compared to internal. IE HTTP/SSL checks compared to server memory and CPU checks.

So knowing that what services do you use for monitoring and what do you like about your chosen one? Also curious to know what you don't like about your solution and how you think that could be improved to make it better for your use case.

Learning how to make a website but don't know how/where to sell it?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2019 03:27 PM PST

I just started learning PHP and I'm reading the book "Learning PHP, MySQL & JavaScript with JQuery, CSS, & HTML 5" but I do know if I should keep on reading/learning. After I finished the book, my goal is to make a really nice dynamic website with those crazy animations but I'm expecting no profit/revenue because I will need experience in bringing in traffic and I know it's hard (well for me it was with the app IG.) I'm dedicated to reading the book but even if I do finish it, where can I sell my website designs/templates. Competition is going to be high and when I look at sites such as Flippa, I have to be making money with my website which requires traffic. I just want to program and make it without using those premade websites such as Wix, etc... Also, if I get to the point of selling it, how will they pay me, what price should I be selling it at, and how can I test my website so it can be safe from most hackers and no data is stolen from hackers. I'm looking towards making over $1000 like less than a month by selling a nice website.

CDN vs Local vs NPM vs Bundle

    Posted: 17 Feb 2019 02:34 PM PST

I'm making a simple portfolio website with jQuery and Bootstrap.

What would be the best way to serve the frameworks in question?

Add their CDN or store them on my server and include them in every html file?

Or install them as node.js modules and import/require them?

Or just use something like webpack to bundle all the js into one file and serve it to the user?

    How to handle recurring fees?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2019 02:25 PM PST

I'm new to freelance webdev, and just landed my first client.

I'll be using Digital Ocean to host the site, and Ninja Forms (or WPForms). My question is, these are recurring charges. How do you handle them?

I've thought of a couple ways...

    A) Charge the client $X/m to cover the fees (plus interest)

    B) Turn it all over to the client.

    C) ???

I like the idea of A, 'cause that's some passive monthly income. But I also intended to include maintenance and support. So that $X/m would cover DO, Forms, minimal support, updates, etc. (probably charge more than $X/m for all that though. This also means the client and I would be forever tied together. Which is good and bad I guess. And wouldn't be so bad if I keep adding more clients. Initially I might lose some money on the recurring fees, but eventually with enough clients I'd make more than enough to cover them.

But for option B, client would take on the DO payment ($6/m) and Forms ($80/yr). This way they'd be totally independent and could hire any other web dev to do changes/updates/etc. But an extra ~$100/m on their side could be a deal breaker? Also with B, I'd charge a fee for (hourly?) support instead.

I don't know if this helps, but my goal is not to just be a freelance web dev, but to own and run my own web dev company. In my mind, I want my company to handle the domain names, servers, design, web dev, etc. To handle the full stack to where clients don't have to worry about any of it. My clients want a website? They get a website. They don't need to mess with registering domain names, finding the right hosting, etc.

    Whatya think? Thanks!

Is there anything equivalent to 100DaysOfCode for BACKEND development?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2019 02:51 AM PST

Today I saw something posted in this subreddit about 100DaysOfCode for Front End Devs.

I am a full-stack dev that has developed apps in Spring Boot, Node, Angular, and React. I would really like to see a curriculum for backend devs.

If there isn't one, we can try making a repo on github and making one together as a community.

What are your best sources when it comes to learning only backend development? I find that reading articles and docs (if done right) helps a lot, but I know that people also like video tutorials and other sources.

Trying to set up email for a client based on their domain. Ideally, want to be able to interface with emails through Gmail

    Posted: 17 Feb 2019 07:16 AM PST

    Hi guys,

For some reason, I usually find answers quite quick for this sort of stuff.

My setup so far - github pages hosted website. Amazon route 53 setup as the DNS. The site is live and working as expected.

I simply want to set up emails such as 'sales@domain.com' 'admin@domain.com' and so forth. I don't need access to massively automated email sendouts and things like that at this stage. Just custom company email addresses.

Ideally, I want something simple to setup that is going to cost relatively little (not sure if there any free options anyway). Any pointers or advice or tutorial would be helpful.

I would like to interface with this via Gmail. I know at workplaces we have always used Gmail but is there something you have to do to be able to login with custom domains there?

Interested to know anyone's thoughts on how to do this and sorry if this is elementary stuff for some of you!

    Cheers

    Websockets with message callback

    Posted: 17 Feb 2019 09:15 AM PST

This is a part of a larger project that I've worked on and I figured other people might find it useful.

    https://github.com/aidv/websockets-callback

In my project I send data to a server using WebSockets and then waits for a response until the data has been processed.

Once a response is received a callback is executed and the user is notified.

My library simplifies such a flow a lot and code can be written like one would write any callback based code.

Feel free to give feedback or critique.

How to change default google search entry?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2019 08:32 AM PST

Hi, I've recently updated my site, and put it live. However, the default entry on Google is still of my previous site. This will still work as my domain address has not changed however my pages have.

Atm the Google entry is of my old website and is like www.mywebsite.com/index.html. I want to change the default search result to my new site, which is just www.mywebsite.com as index.html as a path does not exist anymore.

This is causing issues with how I handle my 404s and I hope someone can help me fix.

TLDR; How do I update the default search entry on Google from my old site to my new site (same domain but different link).

    Thanks!

    Discouraged learning React and Node.js

    Posted: 17 Feb 2019 08:06 AM PST

I have been a professional frontend developer for 2 years now, and I decided to expand my knowledge a bit this year and I started learning (or trying to learn), React and Node.js...

I'm struggling a lot. I have purchased and followed a few courses now, Wes Bos's LearnNode, some Udemy courses like the complete web developer bootcamp, the complete web developer bootcamp zero to mastery... Courses that are very recommended everytwhere and that got me stuff in my portfolio to show off...The truth is I haven't learned anything.

These courses have somebody coding and you just copy what they do...Take Wes Bos for example, love his podcast and everything, but how am I supposed to learn watching him coding an App that is mostly pre built with like 25 packages that I have no idea what they do...? I mean, starting from scratch, I have no idea what I'm doing honestly.

How are you guys approaching this? Can anyone share some tips on how to actually learn the fundamentals and how you went from zero to be able to build something from scratch in React or Node? I hate the feeling of grabbing code snippets and pasting them in hoping that they work.
