Music streaming website I made using YouTube and Last.fm API, what do you think?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2019 02:24 AM PST

I think I know Wix and SquareSpace's marketing strategies.

    Posted: 16 Feb 2019 10:06 AM PST

Most of the time when I visit Youtube for some quick webdev help usually I have to go through a wix or a squarespace ad but I am a web developer and the video I am watching is a pretty advanced concept, why do I need wix in node worker threads? I am a web developer, I don't need squarespace. But this view completely changed yesterday when one of my friends wanted a free website form me. I can't level my existing contract work and spend hours for free, that's when I suggested him wix or squarespace.

Wix and squarespace are targeting us so that we can tell that friend of ours who needs a free website. They know that many people approach us with this.

And it also for those who rage quit after seeing how CSS float works. ( You should look into CSS grid )

What do you think? And did you see a WIX or SQUARESPACE ad before this article?

My Money So Far - A simple utility to see how much you earn in real-time. Feedback?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2019 12:10 PM PST

My "first" website, revived. Fairly simple, somewhat amateur-ish. I would love some feedback on the look and design, I tried to keep it clean and kept mobile phones in mind mostly.

    Thank you, very appreciated

What technologies to use for Ecommerce website creation?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2019 10:33 AM PST

Hi, I'm still learning all the web dev stuff, so i have been tasked to create Ecommerce site.

What would be the best technology for that?

    - I know i can use Wordpress but i feel because it's wordpress i won't be really able to show my ability to code.

    - Second option React, i'm still in process at some point to learn React so for now i'm skipping this for Ecommerce.

    - So what i have left? PHP, Laravel?

How exactly do professional web designers design their websites?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2019 12:02 PM PST

I've always had been interested in web design on recently started learning again HTML, CSS, and responsive design. Through a series of lessons, I've made a sleek, modern looking website sample done in Brackets.

My friend recently told me though that making hand made sites from scratch is very painful and annoying, especially with forms and shops. He said I'm fine with just doing CSS stuff though.

My question now, how do the pros make websites? Are they not typically made by hand, or do they use short cut applications and other websites to shorten the work load? What are these said shortcuts and such? Just how much of a pain is Javascript and PHP by hand?

    Need Help Negotiating Salary/Benefits

    Posted: 16 Feb 2019 03:59 PM PST

It finally happened. A real company wants to hire me. I'm still in shocked. Saw a sponsored job on Indeed, saw the salary range being between 110k - 145k , realized it was in a city 4 hours away, but still applied. After a week long process, I received a job offer.

So here's the thing. Salary being offered to me is less than what was displayed as the salary range on the Indeed ad. About $5k less. Not a huge deal but I feel like I should ask for more? The job ad did say "Extremely competitive compensation packages".

Also, I need to relocate. The job ad mentions "Relocation Assistance". Yet the offer letter didn't mention this at all. I feel like that's something I should negotiate as well.

In your experience, how do you recommend that I go about this? I am not good at negotiating and not sure what to expect.

Is my project useful for web devs?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2019 05:45 AM PST

    Hello fellow Web Developers

I made a project I hope will be useful for web developers. http://taskguide.app

I made it to allow me to have the same kinda protection/feedback CI does for code, but for human efforts.
I've requested feedback before but it was difficult for most people because most features were behind paid accounts.

Today I relaunched with no paywall, so everything is free, and a bit more polished in terms of ui.
Alot of people thought "runs" were confusing, so I made a how to video I've featured on the site as well.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_WI6lCKGmc

Would love to hear your thoughts on the project's usefulness, presentation, my personal attire, go nuts!

Have to do PSD-to-HTML site to get into web dev program. I'm lost. Advice?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2019 03:12 PM PST

I have to do a PSD-to-HTML site to get into a program. I can't use Bootstrap or any other CSS framing to to compete this task, and the page has to be done entirely with HTML and CSS.

Although the website looks devilishly simple to code in HTML structurally, I don't know a thing about CSS yet. I don't know how to do shadows or anything. I know only rudimentary HTML and some advanced Javascript.

Does anyone have any advice, tutorials, etc?

I shared https://temp.media a few month back when it was still a WIP.

It's been live for a while now and I wanted to share some stats as most of the traffic comes from my original post.

Images generated: ~28000 Videos generated ~7000 Total cache filesize ~ 22GB Total bandwidth used ~800GB

Most of the traffic comes from people developing locally and codepen. I'm sure some of you guys are using this and I hope it's useful to you!

I made a website for creating and sharing flip notes (animations)

    Posted: 16 Feb 2019 02:15 PM PST

On the website you can create and the upload animations. You can follow users and star flip notes. It's best on a computer but works on phones as well.

No email is required to create and account, just enter a username and password!

    The website: http://flip.livfor.it

    Screenshots of the website

More information about the website on the Github. If you want to help, you can get access to the private, server-side repo.

If you wish to report a bug or submit a suggestion, PM me or open an issue on the Github

If you want to apply as staff, PM me!

How would you adjust this media query for higher resolution smart phones?

    Posted: 16 Feb 2019 01:08 PM PST

I have a 1920 x 1080 monitor I've been working on to design my website. I set it to change different elements around with this media query:

    @media screen and (max-width: 800px)

When it goes a bit past halfway on my desktop monitor, my intended changes kick in, but on my smartphone, which is 2560 × 1440 resolution (Samsung Note 5), it won't take these changes. How do I make these changes kick in on my smartphone, without making them come into effect at 1440px width on my 1920px width desktop monitor?

Thanks for any help that is provided.

Thumbnail pics on Wordpress site are pixelated. Could use some help.

    Posted: 16 Feb 2019 12:43 PM PST

    Hi there!

I'm working on my site right now and I've noticed that my thumbnail pictures are coming out a bit blurry. I've tried using bigger sizes and they still appear pixelated.

Is it because my images are too small for a 2 post column? Would having 3 post columns work better?

    Any advice is appreciated.

Help with Materialize CSS form validation.

    Posted: 16 Feb 2019 12:21 PM PST

Hi guys, I'm creating a website for practice using express , nodejs, and MongoDb. I am building my UI with Materialize CSS. I really like the look of modals as signup forms so I created one. On the front end, I simply check for password, email length, etc, and display errors. However, I read that it is always a good idea to do backend validation so I would like to practice that. The way I am doing it is on the form submit, I have similar checks to the front end in nodejs, and build up an array of errors. Then, I would like to pas in the errors to the ejs template and re render the modal immediately so the information doesn't disappear that was correct. However, since the modal has no actual "url", no "/something", I cannot re render it from the backend with the errors. I was wondering if you guys could help me with this. Thank you so much!!!!!! Sorry to have a beginner question for you guys.
