What is the advantage of CompSci degree vs. other engineering disciplines? Posted: 30 Jan 2019 10:28 PM PST I am currently a sophomore studying Computer Science, and while I do find software development enjoyable (I am especially interested in bioinformatics/biotech in general) I feel like the roles I could fill are pretty narrow. (Software development, IT, business analytics). I have been exploring other degrees, mainly biochemical engineering (gets me closer to the hands on), industrial engineering (allows me to take on many different roles in a many industries) and to a lesser extent computer engineering (still software focused but more chance of hands on work). From what I can tell, as long as a person knows how to code and has a mathematical background (sometimes not necessary) they can still land many software development positions. Maybe they won't be working for IBM or Google but still many options. So my questions are: 1) What sort of opportunities are available only to CS grads? 2) What other fields can a CS grad transition to? 3) If I were to switch into computer engineering, will I be barring myself from certain CS roles or am I truly just opening more doors for myself? Thank you [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jan 2019 11:51 AM PST I'm taking an Undergraduate Seminar class, one of my last requirements for my bachelors in CS. The class is a single 30-40 minute research presentation with a written report on a technical topic. I'm at a loss for ideas that are technical enough, but also doable in the next few weeks as time is very short. [link] [comments] |
