Posted: 06 Nov 2018 01:03 AM PST Hello /r/webdev. I've recently landed a job at a consultancy company which promised me Id be working with recent technologies and would heavily focus on my career. That sounded great, and the people from the company were really nice. A client came along and asked me to do a simple exercise, which I did, using angular 6. That exercise and a conversation heavily focused on angular got me the job on the client company. I started yesterday, and when I got there they told me I'd be working with YahooUI, something that has died ages ago. This is a time where I really wanted to focus on my career, but I cant help but feel Ive been thrown under the bus [link] [comments]
What's it like being a Front-End Angular/Vue/React Dev? Posted: 06 Nov 2018 11:47 AM PST What kind of things do you usually work on, are they hard, how does your day flow, do you use only one Framework or multiple, are you better of knowing more Frameworks? I'm sure it's not just programming the entire day. I'm asking because I am thinking about improving my Front-end skills to get a good Front-End job in a year or two and my skills are decent now. Am also genuinely curious how different people's experiences in different Front-end jobs are. Looks like it has a bright future. [link] [comments]
Posted: 06 Nov 2018 07:40 AM PST I have what is essentially a backend API for a few points in my app, I use Let's Encrypt for SSL, and the endpoint seems to work great for the vast majority of the world (returning the result without issue). It's just a simple JSON endpoint in this case: https://apollopushserver.xyz/api/active_products But I've had some users (some from UAE and some from Russia) email me saying that they get a "certificate should not be trusted" error, or the request times out. My implementation is pretty straightforward using Thank you. :) [link] [comments]

Help finding CSS design showcase site... Posted: 06 Nov 2018 12:50 PM PST I recently (in the last week or so) clicked through to a CSS showcase site that I can't find anymore. I thought it was through this sub but I've gone through most of recent posts but can't find it. The main thing I remember that I wanna get back to is a post about this menu where the text cut and moved horizontally on hover. [link] [comments]

How to make a portfolio site as responsive as this? Posted: 06 Nov 2018 12:58 PM PST I recently came across this website through this dev.to post and I realized I have never created something that was this fast and responsive as this. Is it all through Webpack? Also, I was under the impression that using React would actually slow down speeds of one's site, but I don't know how true that is. (I apologize for all you experienced devs if that makes you shake your head) [link] [comments]
Can anyone who works remotely part time give me insight on your workflow? Posted: 06 Nov 2018 10:31 AM PST So my company is allowing me to transition into working remotely part time but I have a couple questions regarding workflow. I am working as the only web developer for my company and have all of our projects in private repositories. Right now I don't have any of my code saved onto the internal server, just my computer but once I go back and forth from home, I can only imagine that system will break down. For example, if I'm in the middle of working on some code at home but not quite enough to commit anything, when I get to work the next day, I wouldn't be able to work on that. Should I start allocating some space on our server so my Code can live there and simply map that folder on both machines? [link] [comments]

Print designer requesting help with organizing photos in blog posts using Wordpress Posted: 06 Nov 2018 03:51 PM PST Hoping this is okay to post here. I sometimes write the blog posts for work with Wordpress. I'd like to make the blog really photo heavy, and it tends to be more like a photo essay. Since our webmaster is updating our site she asked me to find examples of what I want, except I'm not sure I know what it's called. I want to be able to have some sort of gallery or way to organize multiple images between a paragraphs of text? https://demo.10web.io/photo-gallery/blog-style/ This is sort of an example I want. Is it possible, instead of having one static picture between paragraphs, can I have a slideshow that doesn't pop-out as a lightbox? Or a bunch of thumbnails between paragraphs? Searching for these terms doesn't return anything beyond more examples of slideshows/thumbnails and such. https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/when-will-we-know-who-won-congress-polls-closing-13367599.php I kind of like the gallery of this news article here (if there weren't ads). Conversely, if what I'm asking for is not optimal, or just isn't the way it works, can anyone point me to some really well designed blogs that are photo heavy? Thank you for your time! Posted: 06 Nov 2018 03:47 PM PST Hey everyone. Just curious as to how your resume looked before you found a web dev job, and what type of projects you tackled & had listed. [link] [comments]
What ever happened to the semantic web / web 3.0? Posted: 06 Nov 2018 03:07 PM PST I remember there used to be lots of buzz about the W3c's push for the "semantic web"/"web 3.0" back in the 2005-2010s. I haven't heard much about it since and can't find any recent articles on the topic- has the idea just died out? [link] [comments]

How to do you do client handoffs? Posted: 06 Nov 2018 02:29 PM PST I've been working as a Freelance dev for awhile and I've been wondering if anyone else has a better way to hand things off to a client than I do. It depends on whether or not I am maintaining the site for them but usually I give clients a PDF(created in Word) with all the information they could need like their login details, and some instructions on making changes to their content as well as images to get rid of any possible confusion. This seems to help with the simple questions and I don't get as many as I used to but I feel like I could streamline the process somehow as these usually take me a not insignificant amount of time to put together. Do any of you have a different process for this or a better way of putting together a document for clients? [link] [comments]
Need some help finding documentation, advice, etc., regarding Elasticsearch. Posted: 06 Nov 2018 02:21 PM PST I have an Elasticsearch instance, already indexed with documents. Got over that hump. Now, I'm trying to figure out how to design a search function with this data. This is what I'm stuck on right now: I have a real estate example. I want someone to be able to go to the search bar and type in a city name or an address or a zip code, etc., and have that passed into the Elasticsearch client, where it would then match it correctly with the field the customer is trying to search on. In other words, I want it to work like how Realtor.com's home page search works. I'm understanding that the developer used React for their search, too. If anyone has any sort of guide they can point me to, because this part has been the hardest to wrap my head around, I'd appreciate it. I'm using the php-elasticsearch client and I've gone through the documentation. Nothing has really popped out at me as relevant to what I'm trying to do. [link] [comments]

Posted: 06 Nov 2018 02:07 PM PST Someone recommended me 1984hosting.com (also: 1984.is). I have a pretty good feeling about them, but it turns out that it's really difficult to find some reviews on their services. Anybody out there who uses them? How is it working out for you? Any info or opinions would be a great help!! Thanks a million! [link] [comments]

Would people even want to register another account just for my website? Posted: 06 Nov 2018 12:32 PM PST Quick question. Part of why I love OpenID is that people get to use a single account for many websites, although I am aware of it's flaws. I'm not sure if people want to register yet another account on yet another account system for this one website they might use only once, though I can't say for everyone, so I'm asking this here. Have any of you ever made an kinda obscure thing for people (in my case other programmers) and people actually registered, at least 50 or so? [link] [comments]
