Employer's employee survey got me a 10% raise

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 10:37 AM PDT

Every quarter my Fortune 50 company sends out an employee survey that does not promise to be confidential.

Full disclosure, most LinkedIn interview offers I get are for similar pay and benefits, it would be hard for me to find a better job, as I couldn't pass most coding interviews right now. I know how to do my job and look for new ways to do it, but I can't write a linked list or sort from scratch.

The company went through a "transformation" similar to one GM is about to go through, and some talented people have been choosing to walk.

I reamed the company this time around. I put I wasn't happy, that I look at new jobs every day. That I've interviewed. That I felt underpaid. That I don't trust upper management.

About a month later my manager calls me in to a room saying he wanted to talk to me about my employee survey. He basically said "The company is going through a big change right now, we need people with internal knowledge to stay, here is 10%, we want to be more competitive."

So don't be afraid to rip your employer when they are looking for feedback.

Update: dismissed criminal charges and background checks for software developer

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 04:43 PM PDT

I posted a little while back asking about dismissed charges and background checks. I had an arrest last year but the charges were all dismissed. Most people told me to disclose my records to my employer as they thought the employer would find out anyway. In my state, dismissed charges are closed records and only entitled employers may see this.

(Some entitled employers: government agencies, daycare/home care services, financial institutions have access to closed records)

I decided not to disclose my arrest and the records did not show up. Everything was cleared and the offer is now officially accepted.

Be sure to know your state laws. What will show up and whether or not employers can make a decision based on an arrest alone varies a lot. If you don't know for sure then talk to your lawyer (or a lawyer). You may also be able to get your records expunged. This can apply to convictions too.

Engineers who went in to management, worth it?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 07:00 PM PDT

    Hello,

I'm in a weird place where I do both team leadership and architecture(primary strength is in front end apps). I can't do both any longer they are making me bad at the other.

Considering going the management route because I hear the pay is better and while I love to build things I'm not as in to learning languages and frameworks as I used to be. Plus I always seem to excel in helping team members grow and meet deadlines. Plus I just like the big picture thinking you get to do when you don't focus on specific problems.

For those of you who did it, any regrets?

The fear is obviously loosing the tangible skill proves easy employment.

As a New Grad, what can we do to send ourselves on a trajectory towards prosperous careers?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 02:04 AM PDT

So not specifically asking about how to be the best at leetcode, how to get to Sr dev, etc.

How do you continuously progress? How do you push past senior eventually or how do you (as a grad), make choices that will send you on a good trajectory? What decisions matter the most as a new grad on how to never stagnate and always grow (doesn't have to be technical)

Like companies or industries to work for, starup vs mega corp, being a dev vs switching into management? Putting in 60 hr weeks your first year vs side projects, learning new hype languages vs Java or C++, effective networking, etc.

Appreciate questions about algorithms and DS because I can't take another goddamn brain teaser

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 06:55 AM PDT

This is just me ranting because around 4 companies answered me asking to do their "coding challenge" and in reality it's a shitty 33 (or around that) question questionnaire full of brain teasers. Like associating images together by trying to find a pattern (some of them are completely ridiculous), "find the next number in the sequence" and this type of shit. Like, seriously, if you do this: fuck you.

I would take leetcode questions over that anytime.

AMA: I am the unicorn that is a Part Time Software Engineer

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 05:03 PM PDT

I often see posts on various forums proclaiming it's near impossible to get a part time (permanent) job as a Software Engineer, or in IT in general. This is depressing, because when you're doing it, it's a fantastic way to work and the company benefits hugely too in my experience. I'm more motivated, sharper and productive than I was full time.

So I'd love to see more people doing it if they wish too.

For some background, I've been doing it for 10 years now. 3 days a week and most importantly, I've switched companies in that time and retained working part time. Senior/Principal level engineer in the UK. AMA!

To PhD or not to PhD? That is the question for AI and Machine Learning enthusiast .

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 07:11 PM PDT

I'm kicking around the idea of going on for a PhD after finishing my degree in CS. What are your thoughts on getting a PhD focused in AI and Machine Learning? How necessary is it to really become an expert in the topic?

    Roblox?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 11:18 AM PDT

So, I'm in the process with Roblox for a summer internship and had a couple questions for anyone that can answer them:

    • What were the interviews like? I've got a video interview coming up but was wondering how you felt about the process.
    • How is the company culture? Laid-back/start-up type or more corporate?
    • What do you think of the pay?

    Thanks!

Burning out from job searching and working full time?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 11:30 AM PDT

    Hello,

I've run into a rut and I'm finding it hard to make progress on my goals.

I've been at my first company after college for 3 years now and I'm basically responsible for the entire department. I work 40-50hrs during the week, try to spend at least 5hrs brushing up on my technical skills, and also have to deal with life, maintaining relationships, etc, and all of it is really exhausting. For the past 8 months I've also been trying to job hop, but haven't been making much progress because I have no energy to dedicate to it after all of the above.

It kind of feels like I'm in a trap. All of these things are sucking my energy for a better future, but it feels like I can't actually advance from here or reap the benefits. I have good experience from my job, I'm learning lucrative skills on my free time, and I've been getting a lot of attention on my resume, but it's all very draining and I don't have enough energy to actually prepare for interviews or spend time on things that will actually get me out of here.

I've been trying to think up some ways around this but they don't seem very viable so I need another perspective. I've considered quitting my soul-sucking job to dedicate myself to the job search, taking time off to travel and recharge, side-stepping to an easy job, living in my car, getting a prescription for Adderall, even dropping acid to find new energy in my life. I'm really thirsty to advance my career, but I just have no energy after dealing with life.

Applying for internships later in the year?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 11:54 AM PDT

It seems like 99% of the companies out there have already finished selecting the interns for Summer 2019.

Are there any companies out there that recruit in Novemeber or Winter/Spring for Summer 2019? I havent got any offers so far and am feeling pretty discouraged about it, I'm hoping theres still some companies out there that hire later in the year.

Would it bother you to have your references called before knowing a company is moving forward with you?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 06:20 AM PDT

Back when I worked as a recruiter, something my boss made us do was to conduct a reference check on a candidate as soon as possible. We were competing against other agencies and he liked us to be able to say we have the reference check to help push our candidates along.

I've gotten out of Recruiting for many reasons but reflecting back I am wondering how people feel about this.

If someone is calling my references I tend to assume I have the job but they just want to make sure no red flags before I come onboard. If someone just called my references after I interviewed then all my references would know I went for the job, I'd have to face them with not getting it and bother them again for other jobs. My references are at VP levels and very busy seems to be a disrespect for their time. I've had candidates get very disappointed with my saying they didn't get the job when they had great references.

I had even tried to get my close friend a job at my company and my boss called her references and then never even let me know that the role was never open. My friend had struggled finding professional references and was so excited that she even bought me an expensive thank you gift for helping her. References were great but the role was never given the green light but the company.

Curious on others thoughts on this?
Recruiters calling references without knowing if a company even wants to move forward.

Tech job offer: Who else feels the pain of not knowing your worth?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 03:51 PM PDT

I'm a software engineer with 4 years of experience, who's just got a new job offer with a series B funded start-up.

Is it just me feeling unassured of what kind of comp package and terms I can demand? Glassdoor seems limited and broad.

Does anyone else feel uncomfortable agreeing to an offer letter without having it looked over/benchmarked by a lawyer or industry expert?

    Recent grad: Uber or AirBnB?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 12:46 PM PDT

I am lucky enough to have offers from both as an almost new grad (5 months experience) both offers in SF. Compensation is roughly the same with Uber being a few thousand higher (but it's not a big deal). I don't really plan to negotiate with either since the offers are higher than I expected anyway.

I am excited by both teams I would join and it seems like fun work. I have a bit of a dilemma now because how do I pick and choose?

Both companies seem great, with great trajectories ahead of them. How should I pick?

I REALLY need to ramp up on Algorithms and Design Patterns in general. What's the best book or online course you've found that could really drive home the main topics in those areas?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 02:08 PM PDT

I've been coding in Java and/or C# for many years, plus countless front-end work. Nothing crazy or too fancy to be perfectly blunt (ecommerce, CRUD apps and some other desktop/web/mobile apps). I'm probably downplaying it, but whatevs. Many times found myself in the manager position as well with some roles as coding took a backseat.

I've been recently laid off, and realized that design patterns and algorithms are becoming first class citizens in interviews or job descriptions (most small companies are now focusing on it). I've written plenty of CRUD apps and similar, but never specialized or had this "deep" language or algorithmic knowledge that software development typically has on the higher end of the scale.

Maybe I'm panicking, but along with brushing up on some Java/C# deeper areas. I also wanted to directly concentrate on design patterns and algorithms as much as I can.

Company B made me a better offer after I accepted an offer from company A

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 05:02 PM PDT

About 2 weeks ago I received an offer from company A. Feel good about this company, I like the tech I'd get to work on and the potential team I'd get to work with is filled with great people. I already had a final interview scheduled with company B, possibly my dream company. I asked company A to give me till the end of last week for me to get back to them, they agreed that was a good deadline. This would give B nearly 4 days to make me an offer.

Had my interview with company B, went well and everything felt good. When my recruiter sat with me at the beginning of the day, I let him know I had a standing offer from another company and a deadline to get back to them at the end of the week. He made a note of that. After the interview, radio silence. I got nothing from my e-mail follow ups. So when Friday came around, I accepted company A's offer. I didn't feel comfortable asking for more time, especially when I haven't gotten even a word of an update on my status with company B.

Fast forward to now. Company B reached out to me and an offer. It's a better offer, and a very interesting company that I'd love to work for. And while there are so many things I like about company A, B might be better for me. But they took forever to get back to me and I'm not sure what to do now. I think I'd rather work at company B, though I don't feel good about going back on my word with company A. I haven't started with them yet, but I'd really hate to do this to them. I'd love some advice on what to do next. I'm really frustrated with company B, despite the better offer, and worried about hurting company A by going back on my word.

    Did bloomberg just drop everyone??

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 01:15 PM PDT

So my friend got an email saying all the spots for summer interns at bloom are filled.

I have a scheduled onsite in one week. Should i even bother going? I'm sort of upset. Do you think they are still holding space for those interviewing in a week?? Or is it hopeless :(

How do you outlive the rejections?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 11:36 AM PDT

I am nothing short of burned out right now. I have been getting rejection after rejection, and believe me, it is not my resume. It is simply that I am an International Student in the US. I wanted to secure a summer internship by now, but clearly that is not happening. I just got one more rejection, and I am actually trying to study for two big exams I have tomorrow, but right now all I want is to go to bed and nothing else. How can you go through all this bullshit and still have the energy to go on?!

is a 14% raise worth switching jobs?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 09:14 AM PDT

I work at a startup in a major tech hub. I make 140k.

I have an offer from an established, large tech company. The offer is for 160k.

I tried negotiating up the salary, since common advice is don't leave your job for anything less than a 20-30% raise. but they told me it was as high as the particular pay band goes, and offered me a signing bonus instead (15k). There is also a small equity component but it's nothing too crazy, around 50k.

All in all, it's a pretty compelling package, but it's only a 14% pay raise. They argued that given my YOE, this is an appropriate salary. The next pay band is for people with >= 8 YOE. I argued that while true, my history of senior / team-lead roles warranted more.

I'm excited and interested in the job, and I feel it will be more stable and have a better work life balance than my current gig. But I want to make sure I maximize my personal gain transitioning.

do you think I have any more room to negotiate? They made an offer, I said it wasn't enough, they came back with a sign-on bonus but same otherwise. Any more room to negotiate or should I consider this my best offer? Should I "trust" that this is actually as high as they can go or push for more?

Is 68k CAD a good salary in Toronto?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 06:33 PM PDT

Starting full time software dev job after graduation in May 2019. Was wondering if this number was below average. Should I stay temporarily in this company or stick for growth opportunities? To put things in context, this is one of the big banks. I'm starting with a 5k sign up bonus and an 8% salary bonus.

Should the talk about the future of software engineering being a flooded field be looked at as anything more than fearmongering?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 02:40 PM PDT

This is just something that has been on my mind recently as I've been seeing a lot of posts about the amount of people getting Computer Science degrees, self teaching, and learning from a bootcamp. I thought it's too a point where someone starting Computer Science next year might want to consider the future of the field.

I don't know the numbers of graduates last year but do believe that CS is one of the most popular majors in the United States. And of course bootcamps are becoming more and more of a reality.

However there's the relieving fact that the job market is growing and will continue has we become more dependent on tech.

Do top companies still hire in January?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 01:07 PM PDT

I keep failing coding challenges and it is extremely demoralizing. A lot of them have medium-hard level LC questions and they just stump me. I am taking 6 heavy courses as well so there is very little time to grind LC. I feel I will be a lot better prepared for interviews after the Winter break but it feels like it will be too late.

Building a personal website without any creativity?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 11:08 AM PDT

How do people do it. I have no artistic ability, no imagination or creativity. My ability caps at drawing stickmen on Paint. I'm a second year student and want to build myself a website to present to recruiters. Something to showcase my ability to develop. But I have no idea of how to design it. I'm looking online at all these other personal websites for inspiration and they look like they were designed by a team of professionals. Those that have done this, any tips? Should I ask someone to design something for me? I have a friend who's in marketing but she also does ad designing on the side and is an artistic/creative person in general.

Trying to decide between two offers

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 02:02 PM PDT

I have two offers, one from a consulting company (Cognizant) and one for a company that produces their own product (a mobile and in person store). Both would be using a similar tech stack, and would be experienced fullstack dev positions.

The Cognizant offer is 20k more than the other company. I'm leaning towards the extra cash, but I've heard that working at a consulting company can lead to stagnation, and it can be hard to find other jobs after working at a consulting company. What would you guys go with?

The extra money could be cool (would put me towards retirement a lot quicker), but I definitely don't need it. I make plenty now, and both positions would be hefty pay bumps. I'm in my early twenties too.

What would you guys recommend? The position at Cognizant is as a senior dev, I don't know what the title will be at the other one yet, but it should be similar.

Some more background, I currently work as a mid-level full-stack dev.
