Anyone have some entrepreneurial stories they would be willing to share?

How do websites like Traviago, SeatGeek, etc operate?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 09:58 AM PST

For those of you who don't know, these are comparison websites that gather listings/prices from different websites and show it all on their website.

    How do these websites work?

For one thing, in some of these sorts of websites, even though the listing is from website X, you end up paying from the comparison website itself, meaning everything is done on the comparison website and you never go to the actual listing site.

Secondly, where do they get the data in the first place? The listing sites never really have an API so that's out of the question, and I have a hard time believing they are scraping each site as that's heavily looked down apon and bordering illegal in certain cases. So the only option is that they struck a deal to get their data, but why would the listing company do it in the first place? What do they have to gain?

This whole thing is confusing and makes no sense to me but is quite intriguing. Any ideas?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 03:21 PM PST

Hello guys/girls or whatever you identify as, basically i want learn to become a front end dev , hopefully then full-stack. I spent couple of months on colt's course and it has given me decent skills. I am also taking Andrew mead's react course and it is going well. But i have questions

1.I hate coding html and css from scratch - i find it basic and I rather code be coding in react. Do I have to really master html and css to become a pro web dev, could I use a CMS like wordpress to generate html and css then use react.js and Javascript to make the website good

Do web dev. code the html and css from scratch for client. I rather use a template which has html and css almost done therest i can moidify and add to make the design meet the client needs

    1. Also, has anyone done this course to learn WordPress. I want to learn WordPress in a few weeks probably when im almost finish mead's react course

Are there any node libraries to handle notifications like facebook?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 11:31 AM PST

Are there any libraries out there that can help structure a notification system like facebooks?

For example, when someone comments on your post, you would get a little red (1) on top of your notification icon on your facebook navbar.

If there arn't any libraries/frameworks out there, how one would go about building this (a very high level explanation would be fine)

    Thanks!

Is mathematics needed for Backend Development?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 06:03 AM PST

Whenever I see questions asking this it's always towards the front end that seem to get the answers but from I've been researching, it seems that it may need some math but I'm not sure.

    Agile, waterfall & "How Long?"

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 01:33 PM PST

I'm a senior developer at a small-medium sized company. We have about 20 staff total, and 10 of those are developers so there aren't any faceless managers. We have a startup feel even though we've been running for around 10 years. I can create change if I make the right arguments.

Our organisation calls itself Agile. We depend heavily on SCRUM boards and user stories etc. We have small teams of 4, daily stand ups and 2 week sprints. It all sounds pretty good right? But my problem is that our developers are constantly having to answer "when" and "how long". Our project managers/product owners like to equate story points to hours as an estimation, rather than after the fact. These estimations are sometimes right but mostly wrong (as you would expect).

Part of the issue is that we have a lot of projects that are relatively static (things like converting an Access Database into a web app). There isn't a lot of requirements change during the projects, but even though we have a good idea of what we're building, there is still uncertainty and risk that lead to blowouts in time.

    My questions are these:

    • How do your management balance Agile with budgets and quoted work? I know it's not Agile to give a quote, but this is business. Our clients expect quotes. Anyone who wants to argue this point based on some kind of religious crusade where clients magically agree to whatever - good for you, but you're not living in my reality.

    • Am I wrong in considering that waterfall might be a better fit for our company if we aren't going to do Agile correctly, and insist on quoting work?

    • Do you think we aren't getting the benefit of Agile if we aren't doing it properly and thus, it's just adding pointless overhead?

    • Has anyone been in this situation and successfully convinced their management to do Agile correctly? I'm sick of walking into meetings and hearing the team having to say things like "maybe today".

This is probably for the professional developers out there, but if you've got 2c, throw it in. I'm keen for any and all experiences & suggestions.

How to get more information from error other than name and message?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 01:00 PM PST

I am using axios in a React app and when I console.log error, I get something like this.

TypeError: Cannot call a class as a function at _classCallCheck (Alert.js:19) at Alert (Alert.js:29) at eval (NotificationPanel.js:74)

I can extract the name, TypeError, and the message/description Cannot call a class as a function. But how do I extract the bottom 3 lines? I've tried error.lineNumber and error.fileName but they all return undefined.

How does SEO-tools gather data of sites without scripts?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 12:33 PM PST

How does SEO-tools like Ahrefs gather statistics about how many links has been clicked, how many visitors a page has had and other stats that, as far as I can understand, can't be known without an script on the page?

Google has managed to get theire Analytics script added to many sites and hence knows a lot, but how does the others do it without similar scripts?

Any Good jQuery-free Background Image Sliders You Guys Could Recommend?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 12:01 PM PST

Hey fellas, I'm looking for a solid jQuery-free responsive header background image slider with a full-height and full-width that can handle scrolling with content in each slide (something just like this), anyone got any suggestions? The problem for me is the software I'm doing this in requires a vanilla Javascript approach without any libraries like jQuery, and my JavaScript skills aren't super good. I don't mind paying for such plugin. Thanks!!!

(Also, bonus points if the actual image slide backgrounds are <img> tags instead of CSS backgrounds for divs, would make my job a ton easier, thanks!)

    React Proxy Issue with SSL

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 11:21 AM PST

Hey everyone, i'm trying to get some more answers with a clearer explanation of my problem.

Essentially i've got a MERN app that uses a proxy to talk to the express server. This was all working perfectly fine at one point. I looked into adding SSL to my localhost for secure localhost URIs but now the proxy for webpack doesn't seem to be working anymore and i'm getting 404's when I try to fetch the backend. That's the gist of it. I also tried removing the cert to revert my SSL on localhost but I still can't access http://localhost after doing so which leaves me in a bind when working with Node apps locally.

Anyone have any ideas? One of my initial thoughts was that the secure frontend and can't talk to an unsecure backend so i tried adding https to my express server but no dice. I'm out of ideas and seeking help from someone who has maybe had a similar problem.

    Internal vs public front-ends

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 05:00 AM PST

One professional distinction that does not get as much attention as it probably deserves is the separation between internal and public app development.

By internal apps, I mean either tools that used within a company (not necessarily your company). These include task management / ERP software, factory control systems, logistic monitoring etc. I would also include software that is targeted at trained professionals — image / video editors etc.

Public apps are then the ones that are supposed to be used by the whole internet — websites, social networks, mail clients.

I have worked as a front-end dev on both types of software, and the experience is very different. Internal apps usually require some user training, and therefore the features tend to be more complex — I did a lot of data visualization and mapping on these ones. On the other hand, while public apps tend to have simpler flows, they come with their own set of complications. Browser compatibility, responsive design and accessibility in particular are rarely that important for internal apps.

Do you feel this split too, or are they the same? If so, have you worked on both types? I feel that training and discussions on the web are greatly shifted towards public apps — isn't it? Any thoughts most appreciated!

    upcoming interview. Any tips?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 05:31 AM PST

I have an "interview" coming up next week and could use some tips. I agreed to meet for coffee with a web development business owner who is looking to take on a new "employee". They seem pretty small and honestly I was surprised they were still active, yet alone growing.

I am not totally sure if he plans on hiring me as a subcontractor or as an employee yet.

The job will involve back end with PHP (not sure about frameworks), some front end design work, and "operations management".

This will be my first interview like this so any tips on how to prepare or what to expect are appreciated.

Also what do you think "operations management" means? My understanding of this terminology is server setup, hosting, git/VC workflow, and possibly quality assurance procedures.

EDIT: I plan on bringing a paper copy of my resume, but would anything else be expected?

Transitioning from development to consulting- what's it like?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2018 06:10 PM PST

Have any of you made this kind of career transition?

The company I work for noticed I'm more personable than some of the rest of the staff and want me to interface with clients and try to consult/sell services and act like a account manager/dev hybrid. This will partially remove me from the developer "trenches" and place me somewhere in mid-management but still help with development when needed although it would be "lighter" and focus more on architecture than coding.

I accepted (long story), but I'm worried about long term salary prospects and losing valuable dev experience if this transition doesn't work out. Have any of you followed this sort of semi-dev/semi-consultant career path and have any advice? Are there any pitfalls or things to be aware of? Is it a grave mistake or is there a good, profitable career path out of this?

    Losing motivation - Need Advice

    Posted: 18 Nov 2018 06:19 AM PST

Hey all, I've been working in web development for the past 2 years after switching career paths. Initially I loved learning JS and was loving the creative problem solving it entailed.

These days however I'm feeling more or less like a code monkey without that creative feel. It could possibly be primarily the current project I'm working on, but I'm seeking advice on what you guys do when you lose that creative and fun that I used to find came with coding?

    Thanks!
