Narcos tv show website - Cocaine Routes - is really cool !

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 08:53 AM PDT

Here's the website promoted by Narcos, the tv show, on facebook. Link: CocaineRoutes. I was really amazed by the fact that you could enter basically any location in the "Create Route" and it will actually display the route to your country, with images from google street and all of that. Any idea how was that made ?

Is it worth learning Vue in comparison to React and Angular 7?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 11:37 AM PDT

Vue seems easier and faster to develop in, but it's not that popular? I did some Vue with routing and all the fancy stuff half a year ago or so, so I'm just not sure if it's worth focusing on it. Doesn't seem on demand, especially where I live (Germany). But, I assume Vue is better for rapid developing and if you're building something for yourself? What are some reasons to keep at Vue or switch to the new Angular?

    Thanks.

What is grpc in layman terms?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 05:18 AM PDT

I'm having trouble understanding it. I heard its a protocol, so does that mean its like http? And these terms thrown around like IDL, protocal buffer and rpc, I can't really tell the difference between them. Please someone clear this up for me.

I'm onto the JavaScript Arrays and I'm finding it really complicated. For example, I can't get my head around forEach and a couple other things. Is it normal to have to go over things multiple times in order to understand it, or is it bad that I don't understand it after going through it the first time? Feeling slightly demotivated by it.

Fresh Start; fill in the blank: Vue App <-> [ ] <-> Database

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 12:01 PM PDT

I am a "scrapy at best" programmer, and am developing a new CRM application for my business. I jumped in with Vue & Vuetify, and am having a blast. Frontend development has never been for expertise, but Vuetify makes it easy.

Now it is time to bring the application to life, and develop the API. However, now there appears to be so many middle-ware options, that making a decision is difficult.

I am inclined to go with a relational database, since the data is, relational.

However, what would recommend for components between the database, and the application? GraphQL, Sequilize, ORMs, etc, it can make you dizzy.

I would like something I can quickly develop, but will not be too constraining.

    Question on handling cross-browser issues

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 07:44 AM PDT

In order to accommodate cross-browsers, is it better to use a polyfill to make it work, or to use properties that inherently have cross-browser support? See below for example.

    https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/scroll-behavior

If we wanted to use something that is inherently accepted by all browsers for smooth scrolling, we would have to make our own custom function that utilizes Window.RequestAnimationFrame (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/window/requestAnimationFrame). The other option (I have not tested) would be to use a polyfill.

Is there a strong opinion as to which route developers should take to accommodate cross-browsers? How would you have specifically approach the example I mentioned above?

Is sharing plain email addresses on public websites with modern spam filters still not done? WDYT

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 01:41 PM PDT

Way back putting plain email addresses on a website was simply not done. We'd use forms or images to share our email addresses.

A colleague of mine told me that my tactics are old and that with modern spam filters (which we don't have ) not putting email addresses is passé. People would never figure out how to contact us. And besides he states, it's already too late, since most of our email addresses are already shared.

    So what do you think?

Please suggest some different CSS frameworks

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 11:17 AM PDT

I've been using Bootstrap for a dozen of projects and I've grown a bit tired of it. I want to try a new framework, but they all look like Bootstrap or offer less tools.

What I would like to have such that Bootstrap already does:

    • full toolkit - the ability to create buttons, menus, tabs, modals etc without writing a single line of css
    • bunch of predefined themes (color schemes, fonts, element styling) - I want to develop the interface and then swap along variety of themes to offer client the best or even allow users to select their theme. With Bootstrap + Bootswatch swapping theme is as simple as swapping a word in a stylesheet url.

    What I dislike about Bootstrap

    • the primary/success/warning/danger/info/secondary scheme. I have no trouble with the classes being there, but I often have a need for an additional palette of contextual classes ("category-1", "category-2", ...) and I'm tired that Bootstrap requires me to either think up and write my own classes or use "warning" panel, text and buttons for stuff related to Player 1 and "success" for Player 4. This flaw (missing a palette of contextual categories) seems to be present for virtually all css frameworks that I've found.
    • the old looks. I want it to appear a bit different. For example, I looked into the semantic ui themes and instantly noticed the same old bootswatch themes there...

    I want to create a "multi-carousel".

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 01:02 PM PDT

I don't know if it's correct to call it "multi-carousel" but that's accurate enough for me.

The thing that I need to to is exactly like this one, I want a carousel that changes content (photos) depending on the item that is selected in a list and I had an idea but I am sure that there are easier and less code ways to do it.

Embedded Videos Won't Resize, Always Bounded By Fixed Container

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 12:24 PM PDT

Hey all, I'm by no means an expert at web design but I do know a little bit. I've been trying to help a friend solve an issue with his website. His site is built with Wordpress, if that helps. Anyway, on to a description of the problem.

Every time a video is included in a post - whether it's embedded from youtube or elsewhere - it is restricted to what looks to be some container or viewport, you can see what I'm talking about in the following links:

    http://thehockeysummit.com/puck-control-hip-movement/

    http://thehockeysummit.com/defensive-movements-transitions/

    http://thehockeysummit.com/explosive-skating-fe-hockey/

I actually tried to embed a video in a post today (which I haven't published so I can't provide an example) from NHL.com, which required the use of iframe. I made a new css class in order to work with this, and it works fine but once I exceed the dimensions of the viewport the video is completely cut off. If it's within the viewport I can resize all I want, and in fact the viewport responds to any resizing up to a certain point.

I'm at a loss as to what to do, I can't find the class that the container belongs to anywhere in any of the stylesheets to edit. Any help would be appreciated and please let me know if there is anything else that I can provide! Thank you!

    Running your entire website "serverless"

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 04:07 PM PDT

Is this feasible? Would using something like aws lambdas to accomplish this be the right choice? or is it more geared toward smaller high usage areas of a service?

What would be the ideal way to do this?

Newb question regarding using DB or api

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 12:10 PM PDT

I'm fairly new with php and back end. Trying to go full stack. Employer is willing and supporting me in every way. Giving me some back end projects to work on etc.

Got given a project today. They are using a soap import and storing everything in a database. (Products, prices, description etc). They want the api updating.

Been given documentation for a rest api with get. Same place they get the Soap import from. Here is the question. They have given me documentation for the rest api. In my mind. I can completely ignore the database now and make calls to display products as they are categorised in a way where I can target what I need.

Or am I going about it the wrong way? I could just amend the endpoint(s) and store the products using the new api. But it seems really wasteful.

Is this the line of thought I should be taking? Is this what they are asking? I know it's vague. I don't know if I am completely thinking wrong haha.

Or out my depth and just tell them can't do it yet with my current skill set.

I get paid the same regardless.

Creating AWS Lambda Applications with SAM

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 03:37 PM PDT

Looking for some tool recommendations as a JS / Node developer. Would love you guys to help me (and others in /r/webdev) out.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 10:48 AM PDT

I would like to hear opinions on:

    • an alternative to Webpack as a module bundler

    • the best linting tool / JS code standard

    • the best CSS preprocessor, something you use and enjoy, which has more to offer than just using vanilla CSS (note that variables are not a selling point anymore and haven't been for a while now)

    • anything at all which works alongside Git, like a tool which enforces a standard for commit messages, anything at all which you feel makes using Git more easy and fun

    • And why not, let's just have your general VS Code extension recommendations as well.

I'm at a point now where I feel completely adept in the essentials of JavaScript, both vanilla and with Node and its ecosystem, and I would like to find and settle into the more comfortable workflow of all time. Gonna take some weeks to learn TypeScript and other tools, that sort of thing. So fire away with some recommendations. Thanks /r/webdev

    How Important Are Job Titles

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 01:40 PM PDT

So, I'm officially a "front-end developer" and my resume, LinkedIn, etc. reflects that. Most of the work I do is on the front-end, but I also handle a significant amount of back-end and devops stuff as well as GraphQL which feels like it sits between front and back end. I wouldn't consider myself as versed in back-end/devops as I am in the front, but it is "full-stack" work.

Recently I've been wondering if it's worthwhile seeing about getting my title changed to more accurately describe what I do. My instinct is that it doesn't really matter - switching context is very common in this industry, especially on small teams/solo development, and the much more important thing is to be able to put down on paper and talk about the work you've done. In a cover letter and interview I'd feel very comfortable discussing what I've done beyond the front-end.

What are your experiences with this? In an industry where the same job and completely different jobs can all go by "software engineer" and "web developer" and "front-end developer" and "back-end engineer" and much more, how much do the specific words matter?

When looking for web development/coding jobs, how important have your college education been in your experience?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2018 09:28 PM PDT

For those of you who are currently in the field, how much of an impact has your college degree had on you getting your jobs? Or do employers test your skill with some project or problem they ask you to solve.

Edit: bad wording in the original question, meant to ask how has your degree or lack of affected opportunity and has it at all made it harder for you when looking for jobs.

A better way to do this? (HTML/CSS)

    Posted: 02 Nov 2018 11:43 AM PDT

I ran into this situation and I'm not quite happy with how I did it. Looking for some input on how I might have done this a little better.

    https://codepen.io/danbastin/pen/VVZNqr

The main goal is to have a "full width" section Which has an image that stretches to the edge of the screen, but a content section that stays inline with the center aligned content column. Is there a way to do this without the image being absolutely positioned?

    Thanks for any feedback!
