My success story as a grad with low grade and no internships. Posted: 27 Oct 2018 01:35 PM PDT I wanted to share my success story because I found them very helpful when I was really struggling. I attended a top 10 university in UK, I struggled a lot. In first year, I failed all of my exams but luckily passed the resits later on in the summer. Second and third year went a bit better but I still graduated with a third. For those that don't know, that's the lowest possible grade, below that is an outright fail. I didn't do an internship, I didn't even want a career in CS up until about a month before end of uni. I had a serious think about what I am going to do and decided to stick to it because I didn't know anything else. I decided to brush up on my programming knowledge and I spent the next couple of months online courses and youtube tutorials, learning as much as I could. I had some interviews that didn't go to well and I was invited to another that went really really well, I thought I had it. I loved the place and they seemed really happy with me but I didn't… I was devastated, I honestly didn't know what else I could have done, I thought that was my one and only chance gone. I was depressed afterwards, I gave it my all and fell short. The manager gave me excellent feedback and told me to not get discouraged and go out there and do exactly what I did here and that he'd love to work with me at some point in the future. I got back to learning and searching for more jobs. In the next 4 months, I learned a lot and had about 40 interviews for all sorts of companies. I kept getting declined and feedback I got over and over again was my lack of enthusiasm. I agreed but it was extremely difficult for me to come across enthusiastic for a job I didn't really want. I honestly run out of jobs in my area. Out of nowhere, I received a call from the manager that had previously turned me down, asked if I was still looking for a job, I was. We had a chat about what I was up to in the last couple months, then was asked if I could come in for an interview the next day. I had less time than I would have liked to but I said yes, of course, that was my one and only chance returning to me. I went in the next morning. This time I was interviewed by the man up top this time, the CEO, as if the situation wasn't stressful enough. Again, I did really well in the interview and received my offer withing couple days. I couldn't believe it 6 months ago I was on the verge of failing my degree and now landed my dream job. I get to relocate to a place I absolutely love and work in a fantastic environment. I love it, couldn't be happier. I cried when I got my offer through, there was a point where I thought I wouldn't ever find a job. I've been continuously told by friends and family that I fucked it, I wouldn't get anywhere with a 3rd, employers are looking for 2:1 or 1st. That I wasted 3 years of my life and £40000 on a worthless degree. I've been really discouraged by some people close to me, some saying that I should just try for a career in retail or fast food. I know it would have been much easier if I got a better grade or if I done an internship. What I want to say, I guess, is that it's not too late, even if you fucked up massively, you can still recover! Better late than ever, if you are in a similar situation, start working on it now! TL:DR Almost failed my degree and had no experience, my one and only chance came back round to me and I landed my dream job within couple months of graduating. [link] [comments] |
Is there a job where I can just do leetcode-style questions all day? Posted: 27 Oct 2018 12:49 PM PDT It may seem unorthodox, but preparing for interviews has helped me realize I really love Leetcode style questions. I love the brain-teasing simplicity of it. Is there any job where I wouldn't have to worry about source control, design patterns, best practices, or honestly dealing with complex systems at all? I have never been very good at those things, but I really enjoy challenging Leetcode questions. If I could spend every day balancing binary trees, I would be happy. What path would you suggest for me? Playing it safe and sticking with a Big N or exploring alternate paths? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Oct 2018 04:05 PM PDT Work at BigN company. "Performance" is heavily scrutinized (my manager said he keeps a list of how he ranks his team members). I put the word performance in quotes because obviously it's a subjective thing based on the perception of your manager. Lots of room for rewards (can easily 2x your salary in cash bonus plus stock if your manager wants to reward you) but of course this is individual-based rather than team-based and this means that every team member is looking out for his own interests and how to maximize his own perceived performance. Let me give an example of why this is a problem. Let's say we have a 10-day sprint and someone puts one of their stories up for code review on day 9 (which always happens lol). I'm also trying to get something done in the final day, so I don't have much incentive to help someone else get their work done by reviewing their code. But it gets worse. If I do review their code and there are major problems with it, I don't want to point them out because I know my team mate will feel like I'm obstructing their performance because if they don't address the issues I point out then they might not "finish" all their work this sprint and it won't look good to my manager. More recently I just let problematic designs or code pass through just because I don't want to feel like an obstructionist. I do this because I know for a fact that another team member had been complaining about me to my manger (basically because we're working on something interdependently and I'm trying to make sure that it's done right rather than push through something that I know has tons of flaws). True story. There are so many engineering politics, I wouldn't be able to fit all of them on this page. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Oct 2018 07:51 AM PDT I mean, just "I quit effective immediately", with no 2-weeks notice? I'm not quite to that point yet, but if things trend in the direction they are going, I will be. What are the consequences? Will the short-term rush of saying "fuck you" to the man be quickly overtaken by more practical concerns? I do not have another job lined up, btw, but I live in a tech-heavy area and am demonstrably very good at my job. [link] [comments] |
Need help after losing first CS job after 2 months Posted: 27 Oct 2018 10:05 AM PDT I graduated from uni back in May with a BS CS degree and I landed my first job 2 months later. During this time, I was hired into this company during their "Boot Camp" phase, which lasted two months. However, after this phase ended, I was judged to not be a good cultural fit for the company, due to asking ineffectual questions and sometimes repeating questions, and they decided not to continue with my employment. I currently have no other experience. My question is, should I place this on my resume, even if it was for a very short period? What can I do to get reemployed at this time? EDIT: If the choice is to leave it off the resume, should I also leave it off of job applications that say to list all previous positions? [link] [comments] |
How do you find places to apply that aren't the big super well known companies? Posted: 27 Oct 2018 12:53 PM PDT I just graduated in May and moved to Seattle. I have applied to a lot of the companies that I know of or could find up here and haven't gotten in at any of them. I know there have to be more places as I mostly applied to Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Boeing, Apple, Hasbro, but how do you find companies? I interned at a company while in school that I had never heard of before prior to the internship but I don't know how to find those kind of places, I had a friend who worked at the place I interned. Any advice you have would be helpful. [link] [comments] |
Best way to maximize use of this year to prepare for new grad hiring season in 2019? Posted: 27 Oct 2018 01:59 PM PDT Basically slacked off freshman and sophomore years and didn't do any internships, have a few offers for a junior to senior year summer internship and am planning on taking the one that has the most name recognition (they're all relatively meh). Pretty disappointed that I didn't land anything at a company that I'd actually want to work for out of college, and want to be better prepared for when I interview for full time jobs next year. How should I best use the next 10 months to do this? As of now I'm planning on:
Most application descriptions also mention Linux experience/development as a plus, what exactly does this mean? I've implemented a lot of the Linux kernel in my OS class and use Ubuntu on my main machine, but nothing I've ever worked on has had any relation to the OS I was using to develop it at the time. What could I do to get experience with this? Any suggestions/revisions to the above plan would be great, definitely don't want to waste this next year like I feel like I did with my first two years. Also, given my lack of work experience, would it a bad idea to try find a co-op for next spring, graduate December 2020 instead of May 2020 so I can have 2019 internship + 2020 co-op + 2020 internship for the 2020 hiring season? Or is that too extreme/unnecessary. [link] [comments] |
Year off after four years in the workforce? Posted: 27 Oct 2018 05:44 PM PDT Hello all, I am considering taking a year off starting early 2019. I've provided some background below for context of the question. Overall, looking for real thoughts and advise. I am tired of reading articles on the matter. Specifically: thoughts on calming yourself down enough to enjoy the break and not run my mind, reentering the workforce after the break, and any other advice reddit deems relevant. After finishing grad school, I went to work in the tech sector (IBM) for 3.5 years and recently switched to smaller tech company. Starting in January 2019, I am considering taking a year off to finish (most if not all of it) a second graduate program and focus on other goals, personal (doing yoga, working out, catching up on video games, etc) and professional (gain certifications, improve programming skills, etc.) [link] [comments] |
Stay in satellite office vs. return to HQ? Posted: 27 Oct 2018 05:42 PM PDT This is an update from https://old.reddit.com/r/cscareerquestions/comments/9ky4q5/hate_current_team_want_to_switch_back_to_old_team/. I told my boss I want to switch teams and he was really understanding (whew). I can either move back to my old team at HQ (Bay Area), or my boss encouraged me to talk to other teams in the remote office (NYC) after a long talk about lifestyle. I still love NYC and feel like I'm not ready to leave yet, but I'm not super interested in what the other teams in the remote office work on and unfortunately the office is small. Leaving the company is not an option for me, as I would like to vest all my stock and it's enough for me to wanna stay. Neither is being remote for an HQ team. What would you do in my situation? Would you return to HQ and get better projects with greater visibility though you sort of hate living there far away from family, or live where you love but are sort of coasting and not learning too much? I know this is probably a personal question and there's no right answer, but I would appreciate your thoughts. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Oct 2018 07:37 PM PDT I am applying (as an Engineering Student) for a Research and Development Summer Intern position at a company. They have listed their remuneration to be 'To be agreed upon, but no less than $18/hr'. In my previous internship, I was being paid around $20/hr so I'm aiming for at least that. I should also mention that the reason they say 'no less that $18/hr' is because they are in an innovation program that provides funds to prospective small companies to hire interns (e.g. I get paid $20/hr the company only directly pays me $2/hr). How would I go about negotiating a rate in these circumstances (as a first timer in this situation)? Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
What jobs should I look into based on this information? Posted: 27 Oct 2018 01:38 PM PDT Sorry for followup-post as what I wrote previously was not exactly clear. I am currently a Youtuber and I've done Youtube for 4 years. While I did pick up around 12.5k subscribers, I could barely make enough money and would struggle to make enough for a living. I have tried sponsorships but the niche I do is too small. Therefore because of this, I feel that Youtube being a full time job is off the table. I've tried my best but unfortunately I have hit my ceiling; Long story short. On Youtube, what I did mostly was design and edit videos using Sony Vegas pro. Now I'm trying to find a job that I would really consider enjoying for once. I have done a lot of unskilled labour jobs in the past but I have never broken out of the hump. Because I studied Software development in college, I think this subreddit might be right for posting this. I enjoyed programming and software dev at first but in my last year of college, I suddenly lost all my interest in software engineering/development. I had thoughts about dropping out but I decided to go with the flow because career advisor said "oh you get a diploma on your belt so why give up". I don't know why but during that last year, I basically leeched (tried to contribute but group members just pretended they gave me work) all my assignments and halfassed everything I did. Despite this, I still got a decent grade and graduated last year. Now with that said, I was trying to find a job within the software development sector. I applied but unfortunately my lack of work experience made it so I couldn't get even a single toe in the door. So I was forced to work labour unskilled. Then about 6 months of working I quit and decided maybe I could go full-time on Youtube and work hard on this channel. Despite the semi-success, I was never able to make more than $350/month. At this moment, I'm thinking what job should I really go after? I tried to apply for the media field but the market is too small + insecure 99% of the time. Basically what I want is a job that I could apply my skills on Youtube video development (+whatever I learned from school). I mean are there really any jobs where both content creation + software development will cross paths? Like I can't think of any off the top of my head. I don't mind if it is a part time job as I want to develop some skills to hope for the future. While I did say that I lost interest in the software development field, maybe I could just use that diploma as a resume asset for a skilled job. I feel like to some extent what I learned in software development is useless so far. To this day I have never worked in a job like this. What job should I go for? Should I still stick with the software development field? And if so, which jobs? [link] [comments] |
How to exit contract to hire position? Posted: 27 Oct 2018 07:31 PM PDT Hello everyone, So I need some help here. I recently took on a contract job it has 1 month. Now everything is great and all and the position is contract to hire in 6 months. But the issue I face is that I got offered a full time position with a huge company with amazing healthcare benefits, and 4 weeks off in vacation a year. And the role pays more. I want to take it, the only thing is I only started 1 month ago I don't want to burn any Bridges. The reason I took the contract position was because my last job was miserable and I wanted to get out asap. I interviewed with multiple companies and the contract offered me the most in money and experience so I took it. But now with the other offer on the table I really want to take the other one but I am not sure if it is the right thing to do I don't want any bad references or to burn any Bridges. Can someone give me advice or share their experience I want to make the right decision.. Also if I do end up taking the new job, what is the best way to get out of a contract to hire position that is 6 months? Does anybody have any experience with this? Thank you in advance for your help!! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Oct 2018 06:34 PM PDT Hi everyone, So I have a week to decide which place to choose for a Software Engineering Internship, please help me out! I go to a top 15 CS school. Post tax comp is almost the same at both places. I'm really confused as I honestly like both the places. My end goal is either working at G/F/Lyft etc or getting a return offer. Hulu Pros: 1) Better brand name, everyone knows about it 2) I've already been placed on the team I want Cons: 1) It's not purely a tech company. SWEs might not be as respected. 2) LA. I'd prefer living in Seattle. 3) Will have to live in corporate housing (would appreciate is someone can tell me more about them) since housing allowance is 3k which I don't think is sufficient for Santa Monica/LA Tableau Pros: 1) I like Seattle and the fact that I'll have to pay less tax. The pay is lower but I'm pocketing the same amount post tax. 2) A LOT of interns get return offers 3) From what I've read on glassdoor, the culture/management seems better and people enjoy working there Cons: 1) Have no idea about team placement 2) The company is a little less known Some questions I have: - Are Hulu/Tableau as respected in the industry as Amazon/MSFT? Will I easily be able to get interviews for full time roles in the future? - As an employer, would you be more impressed by seeing Tableau or Hulu on a resume? - Why isn't Hulu's engineering team as revered as Netflix's? I haven't seen many Tableau/Hulu mentions on this subreddit. I would really appreciate if former/prospective interns or current/ex employees at Tableau/Hulu could PM me! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Goldman Sachs Application Status Posted: 27 Oct 2018 02:40 PM PDT Hey guys, I applied for 3 positions (Summer Associate) in 3 different locations in the application page of goldman sachs. I did the the math test after that and after two weeks they sent an invitation for a digital interview via hirevue. After two weeks, I checked my application status and I was rejected in all 3 positions but on the other hand I was added to another position for SUMMER ANALYST in the portal. The status of the position is thank you for doing the second round interview facilitated by hirevue. We will be in touch soon with an update. Has anyone experienced this situation before? Do I have the chance now to be invited for the superday? [link] [comments] |
Major in Math or Computer Science? Posted: 27 Oct 2018 06:23 PM PDT I'm going to college and would like some advice. The software industry is growing rapidly and technologically evolving at an exponential rate (or so I've heard). Data Science and Machine Learning are apparently growing fields right now and I'd really like to have good job prospects with decent salaries. From what I've been hearing, getting a degree in mathematics (or math related field like statistics) is just as good as getting one in computer science if it is the software industry I'm heading toward. The reason for this is because software engineering is becoming a lot more complex and mathematical, thus utilizing more theoretical concepts in CS. CS is, after all, a branch of mathematics and is based on logic. Should I major in applied math with focus on CS (algorithms, lin. algebra, data structures, discrete math), or just go for the pure CS degree? I do really enjoy theoretical CS and mathematics more than I do software engineering and programming in general, though. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Oct 2018 05:37 PM PDT Hi. I am a CS grad student, graduating soon, looking for full-time opportunities. And I am extremely confused about whether to go to this SHPE 2018 conference. It'd be around $500+ expenditure (plus all the additional effort). Is it really worth it though? It's really not like that I am not getting calls. But, would I be missing out on a lot? Can I land jobs directly from the conference? Also, is it easier to land jobs from the conference (like, lesser rounds of interviews or easier interviews and stuff) ? Edit: Also, for your information, SHPE - Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers and I am an Indian (Asian) male. So please do keep that in mind if it does have a role to play. How do I proceed? (goal to work for AAA gaming studio) Posted: 27 Oct 2018 05:33 PM PDT Background: I'm a recent graduate with a physics degree from a top 10 uni with a 3.8 gpa. I did not take many cs classes. I did however have an internship in cryptography for the past 2 summers. I'm pretty confident in my programming abilities but my specialty lies more in the mathematical/computational side of things, so while I'm familiar with object oriented design, etc. I don't have much experience in game programming/design. Goal: I'd like to get a job at a AAA gaming studio (e.g. nintendo, activision-blizzard, ubisoft, etc.) in game programming - or engine programming. What is my best path forward to get from where I am now (currently jobless) to where I want to be (optimally working for nintendo)? Thanks for any feedback, advice, encouragement, etc. in advance! Posted: 27 Oct 2018 01:00 PM PDT Hi all, I had a technical phone interview with a midsized company (100-125 employees) 8 days ago and they said they would be getting back with me in the next few days, however I haven't heard anything. I interviewed directly an engineer, not a recruiter so idk if they're busy or they just decided to pursue other candidates. Should I send a follow up email to confirm? Or just assume I've been ghosted and forget about it. I have an offer pending from another company and I am on a time crunch. [link] [comments] |
How difficult is it for a general SWE to change into an ML-related role? Posted: 27 Oct 2018 04:44 PM PDT If a SWE is doing non-ML related work in a big company (Google for example), how difficult is it for him/her to change into an ML-related role (application level)? Provided that he/she does not have a MS/PHD degree in ML-related area. [link] [comments] |
What is an average signing/relocation bonus? Posted: 27 Oct 2018 04:21 PM PDT I've got two offers but neither of them offer a signing or relocation bonus. I want to negotiate with them but I don't know what number to use [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Oct 2018 03:09 PM PDT I just got software engineering offers from both Chevron and BP. Chevrons is a 5 year "depth" rotational program for software engineering, and BPs is just a 2 year rotational program. Both programs are 3 roles each. I'm graduating in May and have to make a decision on these offers next week... pay and benefits are pretty comparable, but I'm not sure which would be a better career choice. Anyone have any insight on what working in software engineering would be like for BP or Chevron? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Oct 2018 02:41 PM PDT I'm torn between two new grad offers and can't decide, and my deadline is in two days. Option 1: SWE working on autonomous vehicles in SF Bay Area. 130 base, 260 equity, 50 sign on. Pros: better work (to me, at least), probably higher hiring bar so possibly better for resume Cons: would have to commute because it's in the South Bay and I want to live in a city Option 2: SRE at big N in NYC. 116 base, 215 stock, 50 sign on. Pros: NYC! I love the city and ultimately want to be there Cons: SRE seems less interesting than SWE, I'm also afraid that new grads won't get as much interesting work at a big N. Overall, it seems that option 1 is a better career move, and I'd be happier AT work, but option 2 I'd be happier when not at work, and commuting from SF to south bay seems like a drag. I do want to be in NYC eventually, in either case. What do I lose out on if I were not to move to NYC right away after school? What should I be prioritizing? What else should I consider? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
