Why are so many job listings a complete scam? Posted: 17 Oct 2018 04:32 PM PDT Just as of late I have either experienced or heard of a plethora of utter SCAM job listings. By scam I mean it is not pointing to any real opening or need. Examples: --Companies making bizarrely specific "jobs" that 0 or maybe 1 person in the country could satisfy and then leave it up for 1 year+ in order to submit evidence for H1B needs to the federal government --Companies posting "jobs" and advertising "We're Hiring!" in order to appear like they are growing/successful either for popularity concerns or to attract investors. --Companies posting "jobs" that are thinly veiled attempts to get experienced engineers to accomplish engineering tasks that are then directly used as guides for their in-house developers to add features to their app(s) as part of a "code challenge" --There was a recent thread on this sub about how companies have to post their jobs publicly even though they already have an internal candidate in mind, thereby wasting the time and effort of untold job-seekers. --Most recently I've seen a technical recruiter in a large US city whom works for a popular tech company, perhaps the most popular and sought after tech company in that city, who posts literally every week going back over 1yr+ about their need for developers, yet I know for a fact that qualified engineers that occupy the exact niche that they claim to want interviewed with them and were never hired and instead they choose to continually cry out into the ether on LinkedIn about how they can't find people all the way up to this day I worry that we are encouraging innocent people to enter this field because of a supposed large-demand for the work and instead of encountering employers with open arms ready to give them work they are entering a labyrinth of time wasting job listings which will infuriate them. The current state of things is currently broken both for jobseekers whose time is wasted on a massive scale who then fight back against these time wasting waves by shotgunning their resumes out to thousands of job listings which causes applicant amounts for a given listing to explode, thereby making the companies job of finding qualified candidate(s) harder and the problems on both sides cause the problems on the other side to snowball. I just can't believe that a high tech industry known for disruption can have such a broken system [link] [comments] |
How can we be more effective with interviews? Posted: 17 Oct 2018 06:52 AM PDT You're on a new team and your boss asks you to help with hiring your team members. Your goal is to come up with a method that, in your opinion, best identifies candidates that will help your team become successful. How do you go about it? Here are some of the methods I've been involved in over the years and some of the benefits and pitfalls I've discovered. General Tech AssessmentThis can be administered a few different ways. Sometimes it's a pen and paper test or an online form. Sometimes it's sitting in a room just asking various questions like "Explain the difference between an interface and an abstract class.", or "What's a database index and explain why it may or may not be useful?" Pros
Cons
Work SampleAgain, this can be administered a few different ways. Typically the idea is to give the candidate some sort of task that closely relates to what they would be doing on a daily basis. Our current method has been completely open ended where we ask the candidate to build a mini-project from scratch. Pros
Cons
Whiteboard InterviewPros
Cons
SummaryThe realization I have come to is that there isn't likely a one size fits all or a single best method. Some sort of mix and matching of the above along with other methods would probably generate the best results, but may not feasible given project timelines or candidate timelines. Please feel free to share your interview experiences, both from an interviewer perspective, and as a candidate. Any experiences that really stood out? Anything that you feel is a waste of time? Would love to get everyone's feedback. [link] [comments] |
Disney as a Software Engineer? Posted: 17 Oct 2018 10:24 AM PDT How is working at Disney as a software engineer (specifically in their FL office) as a new grad? The team I'd be working for seems to be more on the infrastructure side of things, which isn't ideally what I'd want to do, but I am a new grad so feel like I can't be too picky (and the salary is way more than my other offers). How's work life balance and stress levels of employees? On call schedules? Overall employee morale? Layoffs? How much opportunity for learning and growth is there? How respected is Disney as a company compared to other non-tech companies like Target, Bank of America, Progressive Insurance, etc? Wondering how easy/difficult it would be to get another job in the field after working at Disney. Also would love to know what living in Florida is like, since I've heard mixed opinions in the past about whether people like it or not. [link] [comments] |
impossible to find an entry level software development job? Posted: 17 Oct 2018 12:09 PM PDT I am a Computer Science student in my last semester at a school in minnesota. Through my classes and personal projects I've had experience in python, java, sql, javascript, nodejs and some others. anyways, i've been applying mostly to associate level software jobs in my area of minneapolis-st paul with very little success for about four months now. I have also been applying to jobs on the west coast with no luck whatsoever, despite there being probably 10x more job postings that i see out there then i do here. i have about 6 months experience developing java applets through a work study program at my school (for the school not industry experience), i've also done a help desk internship for about 5 months. still no calls... and very little job openings that i even see locally that don't require 2-5 years experience. in fact, i had a phone call with a recruiter for a job and got turned down because I didn't have 6 MONTHS experience! any tips on what I can do better? it really feels like there are no entry level jobs out there. and i live in a major city of 3.5 million people! what gives! edit: i've also started mass connecting with people on my industry locally on linkedin, same story, they don't have anything for me but i should look at the jobs page of their company... lol. edit2: i know a girl that got sent some code screen thing from amazon. she can't code to save her life but her boyfriend solved it for her and then she got accepted to an internship that turned into a job. and no she does not have projects or anything. there is nothing really impressive about her. why the huge disconnect? i can apply to places like amazon all day long and hear nothing at all. Databricks or Affirm for Internship Posted: 17 Oct 2018 06:54 PM PDT Anyone have any opinions as to what would be a better internship in terms of personal growth, amount I can learn, prestige? and where the company is going? Comp, engineering team size, and location are all basically the same. [link] [comments] |
Question about contact from former employer soon after leaving Posted: 17 Oct 2018 05:04 PM PDT TI recent left voluntarily a large tech company ~5000 employees a few weeks ago. Before leaving i made a copy of some relevant data to an external drive. Apperently there was SW that identified copying and HR contacted me recently saying I should give them the data/drive. HR said company attorneys asked them for it. What are the options? Can i refuse it as it's hard for me to know what was copied or not and it's only for a personal copy but mention of attorneys concerns me? Can they force me to? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Oct 2018 03:25 PM PDT Does anyone know what Southwest is paying their new grad associate engineers? I have an offer already for 94k in the northeast and am wondering if its worth taking the flight out to Dallas for the interview. I'm a little short on time but will make the flight if I could get something around 85k+. Is that unrealistic to expect for new grad in DFW area? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Oct 2018 07:58 AM PDT Hi everyone I'm a senior graduating May 2019! I've gotten a full time offer at Lockheed Martin Space, which I'm very excited about. I'm definitely leaning towards taking the offer. I'm just curious if anyone here has worked in Space and what the experience was like and just general advice? My location is King of Prussia, PA. Company might not hire me because of stupid assumption Posted: 17 Oct 2018 07:20 AM PDT I'm at the end of the hiring process on a big company (not big 4). I'm in a development position on my current job, but the job that I'm applying is a product support one. My performance was great on the entire hiring process, but the HR responsible told me that she's worried that in the future I will leave my support position for a development one. I just finished the third interview and I'm waiting for their response. Is there something that I can do or tell her? Maybe send an email? I'm afraid to lose this job for this somewhat stupid assumption. [link] [comments] |
Stuck in ops hell.. is this just how it is? Posted: 17 Oct 2018 12:11 PM PDT Hi all, I'm a junior engineer with 1.5 years of experience. I started out at a big 4, and recently moved to another one. The common thread I've noticed across both teams, is that there is actually very little coding being done. Most of the work is typical ops stuff, and I feel like I'm not even getting to use design or coding chops.. is this just how it is at big companies? Do I need to go to a startup if I want to actually design and implement systems? [link] [comments] |
Capital One Internship Summer 2019 Posted: 17 Oct 2018 03:38 PM PDT Just accepted my c1 internship offer for summer 2019. For anyone that has previously interned there 1) What kinds of projects do interns work on? Is it possible to request a team? 2) What are some cool things to do around Mclean VA? 3) How do I make the most of my internship? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Oct 2018 07:50 PM PDT I'd say that I'm pretty good at coding in general. But when it comes to structuring my code and project files, I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing, or how to properly structure a project. Any body know of any good books, youtube, videos, udemy, courses, or any other resources.

Any other soon-to-be grad losing hope? Posted: 17 Oct 2018 09:23 AM PDT I'm graduating with a B.S in Computer Science this December. I've applied to about 80 jobs online so far and went to career fair and handed my resume to 14 companies there. I have had about 5 companies give an interview from both online applications + career fair combined. My resume looks pretty decent I think and I've had 1 internship experience and 1 project worth talking about. I even sent my resume to the company I interned at and they haven't gotten back to me yet (although they are a bit slow I suppose). I'm kind of losing hope, I live in a mid-sized city (300k population) and there aren't much jobs here so I've been applying to nearby cities which are much much larger. Ideally I wanted to start working January (since I graduate in December) but as each day goes by and I don't get a response to my resume, I'm starting to lose hope. There aren't much networking events in my town either. I've been applying to only software engineering/developer jobs (entry level/junior) because I don't wanna go into a QA role or anything other than SWE. The interviews I've had: - One company about a75 min drive away where I went past two phone interviews and then a third onsite interview with senior managers, didn't get the offer from there. - One consulting company which takes up software dev work for gov agencies, they're very small, had an interview with HR, and then the CTO, and they ghosted me after. -A staffing company for big banks - made it to the third round of interviews and went in-person, didn't get an offer from there either - Another company which was about "Scientific software development", didn't move me forward because they have a 3.5 GPA requirement - Big and well known corporation, stopped contact with me after HR interview I apply on Handshake, LinkedIn, Indeed, and Dice. Is anyone else in a similar position as myself and can provide tips and solutions or point me in the right direction? [link] [comments] |
Switching from C#/.NET Developer to Java Developer? Posted: 17 Oct 2018 05:02 AM PDT I have been working in IT for three and half years after graduating from university. I have worked solely as a .NET Developer in the same company with main focus on front-end development. I am currently thinking of switching jobs since I'm still working at relatively low wage and there has been a decline of Software Engineering projects at my current company. Recently I got contacted by a headhunter and after a call found out that he was recruiting a Java Developer. I was surprised but we still scheduled an interview with a technical person in the company he was recruiting for. I don't have any work experience with Java but during my studies main focus was on Java development. I haven't really touched it since but I know that it shouldn't be a huge step to switch from .NET to Java - I'd still use similar tools but instead of Entity Framework I'd use Hibernate and instead of IIS I'd use Tomcat and so on. But I'm wondering if I was accepted should I make the switch or not and how should I prepare for an interview since my work experience is from different language than what the job requires. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Finally broke 6 figures, but commute is miserable and I want to quit. How bad is your commute? Posted: 17 Oct 2018 01:02 PM PDT Graduated a year ago, been full time for about a year. This commute is going to be the end of me, and working from home is not allowed without advance notice. I feel like i'm trapped in a cage. Has a commute ever been a deciding factor for your jobs? It's honestly killing my motivation to work with all the time wasted from driving. And before you say it, yeah I listen to podcasts, and audio books, but it gets old after a while. Especially when your brain is fried on the way back from a stressful days work. Maybe I'm just ripe for change, I don't know. I miss the excitement I used to have, the passion. It's even making me want to switch careers into something like technical sales, to bring my hustle back. Thoughts? appreciate your insight. [link] [comments] |
Manager during one on one never brings up career progression Posted: 17 Oct 2018 04:43 PM PDT This is my second company since graduating in 2016. My first manager made career progression a strong topic of all one on ones. I was set for a promotion due to go into effect a month after I decided to leave. This manager hasn't mentioned it at all. I've given it some time. I've been here for almost 9 months. I recently found out a co worker that I interviewed and gave the ok on for the same position as me makes 30-40% more than me. I was low balled in my offer and accepted after haggling to relocation assistance. That's my mistake. How common is this? Should I press the issue? I'm also interested in advice as to how I should broach the topic of salary. I feel that this salary discrepancy hinders my performance as I don't feel as valued. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 17 Oct 2018 10:11 AM PDT Hello all! I've decided I'm happier when I'm playing outside/fishing or reading comics etc. Basically your Peter Pan syndrome never wanting to get married or have children. But I do need to pay some bills every month like rent and food. I've got a decent nest egg already in my 30s and I've always kept one foot in the Linux and free software world. By my own assessment I'm probably a few months to being a decent admin or junior Python programmer. I don't live, breathe, sleep programming though. It's a fantastic field and I love it, but I'm not interested in sitting at a laptop or desktop for 12 hours a day. Any job in the field where I can do a little bit and keep my interest to learn at a steady speed and work enough to pay bills and save a few dollars but not have work be my life? Very curious to hear your responses. [link] [comments] |
Quitting current internship for another one Posted: 17 Oct 2018 05:39 PM PDT I currently intern at a large automotive company as a software engineer intern. I'm about 5 months into a 12 month cap (I did not get this internship through a school career center). I want to leave for several reasons. 1) not learning anything - I'm doing technical work, but not software engineering related for the past several months 2) while embedded system development is interesting. It's not directly what I want to do with my career. (Maybe this would change when I'm no longer an intern and get more in depth experience) I recently got a call for an interview with a company more in line with what I want to do (Web dev, mobile apps, desktop applications, etc), and it's also a company I've wanted to work for, for a while, and possibly have a career there. In the scenario they extend an internship offer to me. Is it deeply frowned upon to quit my current internship? Would I be burning bridges? Thank you for your answers [link] [comments] |
Internship location... should I be concerned for these reasons? Posted: 17 Oct 2018 03:17 PM PDT I'm finally receiving internship offers! I want to credit this sub because it helped a lot, so thank you all so much! I got an internship offer from a nice big company to work in Columbus and an offer from a big company to work near DC. An answer to any of these questions would greatly appreciated :) Q1: Does location affect the quality(exp/skills gained, value added to resume, etc) of the internship role within the same company? I'm leaning towards the first offer above, but the company is headquartered in NY. Q2: My goal is to receive full time offers next year in cities I love like Boston, New York, Seattle, or San Francisco. Will a job in the midwest make this goal more difficult to achieve? Q3: Should I just shut up and be happy? After all, it is my first internship offer, and it is a competitive one. [link] [comments] |
"Why not work at a big tech company" Posted: 17 Oct 2018 11:28 AM PDT I got asked this question at an interview with an investment bank. "Why not work at a big tech company?" (Meaning FAANG) I didn't have a good response to it. How would you respond? [link] [comments] |
Anyone know about Constant Contact? Posted: 17 Oct 2018 08:03 PM PDT Does anyone know anything about Constant Contact and especially its Software Development Engineering Program and interviewing for them? They are owned by Endurance International Group and seem like one of the biggest companies in Boston, but I can't find anything on this subreddit about them. [link] [comments] |
Anyone go from software engineering to patent or tech law? Posted: 17 Oct 2018 01:27 PM PDT This is something I've never heard mentioned here. If you have a BS and a few years in industry, you can go to law school and get involved in patent law. I'm not asking the question for me, but I wanted to spark a discussion and invite you to share your thoughts and feelings about it [link] [comments] |
Need a professional github name? Posted: 17 Oct 2018 07:23 PM PDT So my github name is JuanPotato and someone at my university who was reviewing my resume said I should get a professional github name if I was going to include it. What do you guys think? [link] [comments] |
Should I ask for a raise in this situation? Posted: 17 Oct 2018 07:18 PM PDT I've been with my current employer for just about a year. This is my second dev position and I had two years prior experience before coming on board. I received a raise during the summer (performance review) but here in the last month or so I've been promoted to implementation lead for the project I'm on. Should I ask for an additional raise for the promotion and additional duties that I'm taking on or is this bad form considering I recently received a raise? [link] [comments] |
