Avoid Terrible Challenges - you have the power Posted: 26 Sep 2018 06:32 AM PDT Just a word to the community - we have the ability to fight back against coding challenges that are disrespectful of our time. Be public - name and shame. Let's get the names of these companies out there so that anyone else who might be hapless enough to end up in their pipeline is fully aware of the BS these companies are ready to pull. It's against this sub's rules to troll or be a jerk - please realize I'm not trying to do either. Well, I am being a jerk towards companies that don't value their candidates, but this environment won't stop until we help make it stop and hit these orgs where it counts. Collective action is the only thing that will prevent this from continuing, and as such I'd like to name and shame any companies with BS voodoo hiring practices they follow because they read a blog post from a google engineer once ten years ago. This really sucks. Always getting rejected Posted: 26 Sep 2018 09:42 AM PDT Just got rejected from a job with a defense contractor. What makes me more upset is that I felt that the interview went really well. Instead of the original 30 minute time slot, it went for a whole hour. The interviewer showed me around and at the end, he even winked at me and said that I'll be hearing from them. Fast forward to today, I get an email from my recruiter saying that "unfortunately your resume wasn't approved by the customer". I really liked learning about what I would of been working on and felt that I would of learned a lot in that position. I certainly feel even more incapable now since this sub says that the defense contractors will hire anyone with a pulse. I graduated in June 2017 and my career still hasn't taken off. I've done some freelance work right after graduation and a 6 month contract at this crap company that mainly had me do help desk after telling me about all the cool stuff I'd get to program during the interview. That job actually ended a month ago and now I'm unemployed. I've been learning C# on my own to expand my skill set but it seems like something always comes up in my interviews where I don't end up getting the job. I've been on probably 11 on-sites since I graduated and the only offer was the contract job. There's so much competition in the entry-level market. I know a lot of it has to do with luck. But I've always been unlucky. I feel like my career is over and it hasn't even started. I'm always willing to learn new things and all the jobs I've had, people have told me that I'm a quick learner and a good team player. I believe I have the soft skills needed in interviews. But I always end up blanking on white boarding/leet code problems however and realize what I did wrong after I'm out of the interview. I always hear from people who graduated 4-5 years ago and they say their interview process was mostly behavioral and a few conceptual technical questions. It seems like those days are long gone. Internship asks for test scores Posted: 26 Sep 2018 06:14 PM PDT I'm not goin to list specific companies, but I'm applying to internships on Glassdoor. If your doing the same you will know which one I'm talking about because it's one of the top ones. This company asks for tests scores: SAT, ACT, GRE. First off, I didn't know anybody asked for tests scores after high school lol. Second, how would they even prove what I put on the there? If they asked, I would have to pay to have my ACT scores sent anyways which I would never do. [link] [comments] |

It takes me forever to troubleshoot, my code is usually buggy, and I'm really bad at communicating with people to gather requirements. It's frustrating to work with me and I have a hard time getting a job. But I still love development. I have the passion just not the competence. I guess I'll get better? Posted: 26 Sep 2018 05:17 PM PDT I know you're not supposed to lie on a job application as it's grounds for firing, but this is something I don't really understand. I was just applying to Walmart Labs, and their questions for qualification for a new grad position were asking if I have 3+ years of development experience in Java, C, C++, SQL, mainframes, etc. I've seen these type of questions on other job apps as well. I don't get it? Are these "years of experience" supposed to count for just using the language in school as well? If not, why the hell would I have 3+ years experience and be applying to entry level positions? Do you just check yes for all these questions? The sheer amount of "requirements" for new grad positions is frustrating. I know they're wishlists, but I've actually had companies ask me if I have all these requirements over a phone interview, and immediately lose interest when I say "no, I don't have 3+ years of experience working with objective-C and .NET as a college student" (don't remember the company name, it was some construction company posted on Indeed). I see things like "have 2+ years experience working with X, Y, Z machine learning algorithms and developing models" for an entry level data analytics position, or a startup I've never heard of requiring "2+ internships with prestigious companies, such as Google or Amazon", or similar. I'm earning $14K net monthly (post tax) in a baltic country, is it worth moving to Bay Area? Posted: 26 Sep 2018 06:49 AM PDT I'm 35 years old and work remotely for a Bay Area company and get paid SF money. The CoL here is very low, my rent is around $400 for a 4-bedroom apartment. Have 2 kids (3 and 5 years old), wife is happy, our whole family is here. I make a lot of money and can retire probably in 5-10 years. But ... I want my kids to learn proper english and I don't know how long sustainable I can keep up working remotely. I'm always working alone and need to put more efforts to keep up with technological advancements. Second, I have the feeling that my career will get a hit in the long term and that I could learn more by joining a proper big-corp (Google, FB, Apple, etc...) I have the abilities to join them very easily. Most of my friends are already working for them. I know Bay Area is very expensive. I made the calculations and seems like I'll be able to put only around $1K money aside (for $200k annual minimum while working for a big-corp). Currently I can put aside at least $10K money each month from my current gig. I won't be able to save money in Bay Area. My concern is that my kids would have harder time in the future to learn english (the younger the easier they can learn english) and that I might not be able to join these companies in the future due to ageism and not be able to keep up with technical knowledge. So, is worth moving to Bay Area, get a hit money wise but increase quality of living (nature, career, etc..) or is it better I earn as much money as possible? [link] [comments] |

I am 27 having worked in the entertainment field in Los Angeles for the last 5 years. I am burned out on the industry and its lack of creativity (in my current role) and how overly saturated it is. Recently a family member suggested for me to think pursuing a CS career. The more tutorials I look at, it seems a very intriguing career. However, I just have a couple questions: 1) Can you get a job without going to college? I really can't afford to go back and get another Bachelors degree. Posted: 26 Sep 2018 01:01 PM PDT I've done 2 engineering internships, am in year 4 out of 5 CS at a target school, have won first place at two hackathons, have 3 presentable side projects (one has 100+ stars on Github), and am working part time as an engineer for the last company I interned for (12+ months professional experience total). I've gotten my resume vetted here several times and been told it's great. In the past, I reached out to smaller local startups (<20 people) and sent personalized messages to land my internships. My goal is to work at larger companies (BigN) in 2019 (for all 3 Winter/Summer/Fall terms). I've applied to 103 jobs so far online over the last 2 months and have gotten a response from absolutely nobody, except Jane Street who rejected me in less than 12 hours. As of yesterday out of desperation I've started cold-emailing/LinkedIn messaging recruiters to explain interest in their companies, but I have no idea if this works or not. So far no response. I even had a colleague at Facebook say he referred my resume last month, but that has no lead nowhere either. My question is, what the hell does somebody like me have to do to get an interview from a company larger than 20 people? [link] [comments] |
Do the coding challenges ever stop? Posted: 26 Sep 2018 12:48 AM PDT I'm currently a recent grad with a full time job. When I was applying, I realized how much I hated doing these coding challenges. Me and a group of buddies would do about 5-6 leetcode mediums a day for 2 months. When I applied I did the shotgun method and applied to about 200 places and got back about 40 interviews and they all did the 2-4 part online/whiteboard leetcode or hackerrank type questions. It was probably my fault for agreeing to do all the interviews but damn does it ever stop? I really don't want to do these anymore if I leave my current company. Is there a point in your career where they just look at your credentials and ask you about what you've done instead of asking you questions like "Program the Fibonacci sequence" but will only accept it if you provide the memoized solution? Before I started I built a project that's pretty much ready to launch. According to talks with my recruiter, they would own the IP if I worked on it (even in my own time) based on their confidentiality agreement, so I stopped working on it. However, today I realized I never actually signed my confidentiality agreement/IP agreement/other documents, just my offer letter. Is this binding? Can I go ahead, polish up and launch the product? Recruiters, is there such thing as being too experienced for an internship role? I was promoted to Senior SWE last year and I feel like a fake. I work for a small start up and I'm nowhere near the level of a typical Senior. They just gave me a title bump to make me happy plus a small negligible raise. Anyways, I've also been in school for 2 years now pursuing a Bachelors in CS part time and I'm now working towards applying for internships at various large Software companies. My question is, should I use the title SWE or Senior SWE? I feel like the fact that I have the senior title might hurt my chances. I'm also looking for an internship rather than a full time role because after I secure an internship I'd like to quit work and take some time off to focus on school. [link] [comments] |

Great pay, smart coworkers, nice perks, etc. But I am not at all passionate about what we do. The product and things I'm working on are so, so boring that I find it very difficult to work on them. I mostly chose this job over my other offers for the money, but now I'm considering taking a pay cut in order to move to a company that I'm more passionate about. What do more experienced devs think? Networking tips for introverted people Posted: 26 Sep 2018 08:19 PM PDT I just started a new job as a SWE in the Bay Area after 4 months of job hunting. It's an okay job with a below average pay. However, I intend to find a job that I'm more passionate about, with better working conditions/pay. That being said, I'm quite introverted and during my job hunt I realized, the best way to get an interview is through referrals and your personal network. Posted: 26 Sep 2018 11:35 AM PDT throwaway account for obvious reason. Also this post may sound like a giant rant post, but I'm really looking for some advice. Feel free to jump to last paragraph A little background: I began working at this startup about 3 months ago, and my old company is really serious about stability and tests. We had serious code reviews and we cannot merge our code until we had proper tests. Yes, it slows down the process a bit, but overall it makes me feel safe and confident about my code since I have my tests backing me up. Then here's my current company. It's a data warehouse and majority of engineers are actually data scientists, which is cool because I get to learn about the data science part of things, one major reason for me to join this company. It seems like a lot of them don't really care about the code integrity. A lot of code is not cleaned up. There's no standard that people follow. I've even seen a giant block of code that's completely unused and it's being run every loop!!! (We use python, so I'm guessing he or she just copies that entire block of code from jupyter notebook or something...) But most importantly, there's no test! We don't have a QA team, so engineers have to test their own code. But our tests are simply "oh it looks okay, feel free to push to prod". To me it's asking for trouble. Back then our service had only internal users, so things are manageable as we all know what to do when shit happens, but now we're pushing it to outside users. I'm just so nervous that I'll have start getting calls at midnight asking for fixes. I've been advocating for adding unit tests at least, and I'm glad some senior engineers bought onto this idea and are in full support of making this SOP, but not all like this idea. In fact, today someone removed my entire javascript test suite because "it halts the build". Well, it halts the build for some fucking obvious reason! Your code changes the intended behavior! I was so heated at one point that I really wanted to quit on the spot..... Then apparently my boss is not a big test guy, either, even when he says he is. The other day he gave me a task to write unit tests for his code since I "like to write tests this much". My impression is always "you write your own tests", but apparently I was wrong. He, to me, acts more like a PM and just want to push, push, and push to production. I understand that in a startup, speed is important, but the more I work with him, the more I lose respect. I really think that this is a culture problem at this point. It's not just one person. It starts way up from the leadership and trickles down to each individual engineer. We are a startup, so I understand that process can be messy at times. This, in returns, gives engineers a lot of freedom to do things (another example would be that we never have a design spec. Engineers do their things, then PM critics. Feels like a POC, except your "POC" will be pushed to prod a day later, no specs, no docs, no tests, no nothing.) This is not freedom at this point. It's chaos. I really hope this post doesn't make me sound like a snobby, "oh you think you know so much" type of guy. I'm just really lost. I talked to my boss and you guys saw the response. I talked to the peers and, though some like this idea, some are reluctant. I've got into trouble with PM because I just need another hour or so to write tests but they don't like it. I know that some of you would just say "start looking for another company" or "just quit", but I would really like to exhaust all my options before I waive my white flag. I've only been applying to small companies so far, and have had little luck, and heard bigger companies can afford to give out more interviews due to their size. I've heard about rotational programs from AT&T, C1, T-Mobile, and Kaiser-Perm so far. Are there any other companies like that? My recruiter let me know that Uber doesn't negotiate even against other offers. Some background, I am from a targeted school and I've had previous internships. I recently got a higher offer from a larger company, and I would get paid ~25k more per year. Posted: 26 Sep 2018 07:05 PM PDT I'm currently in my first semester of college and I'm in the Army ROTC program. I original joined the program because I wanted to stay physical fit, knew they had great leadership training, I was awarded a 4-year full room and board scholarship and wanted to follow in the footsteps of many of my family members. The issue is now a couple months in I'm questioning if I really do want to be in the military because of the time commitment it requires during and after college (8 years) and it's starting to get in the way of my other classes. If I were to quit the program my grades would mostly likely improve as I have more time to sleep and study, I would be able to devote myself to other clubs around campus, potentially be able to graduate earlier and I would not have to devote my self to 8 years of service after I graduate but I would be losing arguably the best leadership training in the world. What would be in my best favor if I am pursuing a leadership role in CS? [link] [comments] |
