    Streamers Pirating our game.

    Streamers Pirating our game.

    Streamers Pirating our game.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:28 AM PDT

I'm a bit frustrated our small indie team released our game on steam. It was rushed and release a bit less polished than we would have liked. The game was immediately pirated (which is to be expected).

We've made a few major updates since release and corrected a lot of issues and made improvements to the game play.

We are noticing a lot of streamers are playing the pirated version of our game. With the changes we made it's very obvious they are not playing the updated release (anyone on steam would have gotten the updates).

So we have streamers giving feedback on bugs that don't exist in the current version. There is actually no way to play those bugs unless you pirate the game.

The worst part is they could have asked us and we would have gladly given them steam keys.

Anyone else have to deal with this?

Why does Unity strictly require a terrain height map with a resolution that is a power of 2, plus one?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 08:41 AM PDT

Unity always requires a height map resolution that is 2n+1 (e.g. 513x513, 2049x2049, etc). Why is this so?

There are only few answers on the web, some of them explain it in a "that's just how it is" fashion and doesn't really go deep into why this is a requirement.

Any help or links to resources would be appreciated. Thanks! If I am posting in the wrong sub, can I ask where the right sub to post this is?

Join the Kenney Jam from August 16th to 20th where you'll have to create a game using pre-made assets!

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 09:45 PM PDT

This year I'll once again host the Kenney Jam, where you'll have to create a game using pre-made assets. Last year over 80 entries were submitted! There will also be a theme announced when the jam starts (last years theme; "It's a feature, not a bug!"). If you've got any questions, feel free to ask them.

    More information/FAQ:

What 2D game development tool-kits exist for creating sprites, animations, texture sheets, tile maps, etc.?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:50 AM PDT

    Hi there,

I read through the Getting Started and FAQs pages but couldn't find anything that covers my question.

I'm curious what software packages exist for creating 2D sprites, animations, texture sheets, etc.?

I'm currently working on a 2D game using SDL and am specifically implementing the engine. However, I don't seem to have a lot of tools for creating the data sets for sprite animations, level editors etc.

I'm curious what utilities you guys use. I'm primarily interested in features and cost.

How do you pick your next project?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:31 AM PDT

Hey guys! I'm a game developer thinking about starting a solo game project and don't know how to pick between my ideas. I'm currently do an internship at a AAA studio and don't know if i should make something that will help me in getting jobs or make something that I want to make. Learn a new engine or use a familiar one, 2D or 3D ? What should the scope of the project be since I'll be the only one working on it? How do you pick between the various game ideas you have?

    Recommended C++ UDP networking library?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 07:01 PM PDT

I've been looking around for a good C/C++ UDP library that supports reliable and unreliable message delivery. I don't need hole punching. So far I have found:

    • ENet - I know this one has been around forever, I don't know much about it though
    • RakNet - Seems abandoned, but maybe that's ok if things are working
    • SLikeNet - More up-to-date fork of RakNet, but could have introduced new bugs
    • GameNetworkingSockets - A recently open-sourced project from Valve, seems to be the most supported and active
    • Edit: Yojimbo - Looks pretty nice, I'll check it out and report back later. Thanks for the suggestion /u/cowvin and /u/HateDread

I'm sure there are others I am missing. Does anyone have a recommendation? I'm currently leaning toward the one from Valve, because it's the most active.

I'm a filthy n00b. What are your opinions about the book Nature of Code?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2018 08:19 PM PDT

    https://natureofcode.com

I would welcome some input from experienced developers saying how relevant it is.

I had a quick read of it and it seems to give a good overview for 2D development, at least. It gives examples after presenting a concept, followed by an exercise, which seems a good pace. The last chapters are about fractals, genetic code and neural networks, and I couldn't understand how it would be applied to a game (maybe I just didn't understand it).

What kind of a game would you suggest me, as my first game ?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:15 PM PDT

    Hello everyone.

I attempted to make a number of video games in the past, but I didn't finish any. I tried working alone because none of my friends have the skills to help me in making a game. I'm fine with coding, and when it comes to graphics I'm better at 3D than 2D. The thing is, I already attempted to make two 3D games, and eventually gave up on them because they were too big. The first one was an RPG, and then I tried to make an FPS, but I gave up this too when I realized the huge amount of unique 3D assets I'd have to do for a medium to large sized FPS. I now realized I have to aim for something even smaller. The thing is, the smallest kind of games are usually 2D, but I'm not that good with 2D. What genres or kinds of games use 3D graphics, and require a relatively small amount of graphics assets, that could be done by a single person in a reasonable frame time ?

    Hey everyone,

I made this album on a Nintendo DS. It's licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International, so you can use it however you like, as long as you credit me. If you do use it, I'd love to see/hear it in action. The styles and moods vary quite a bit, but its mostly very rhythmic music. I've organised the tracks roughly into their different moods/styles below. Also, the song names are mostly just what they remind me of, so don't feel you have to use them for their name (obviously).

I've included some loops that you can use in sync groups, which introduce new elements to the tracks each time, so you could slowly build up intensity or something. If you want some specific loops for songs, or any edits, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Dynamic Waves and Water physics is it possible Solo?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 09:58 AM PDT

So I'm some random guy lacking experience but that is besides the point.

    My questions is put simply.
Is it possible to create something similar like you see in Black Flag (AC4)
in terms of water physics, wind and storms ect.
As a Solo indie game developer?

I know water can be insanely complex and confusing.
And as a side note im not asking how to do it im simply just asking if it is possible to do it.
    Water is wet.

What type of skills should I look for?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 09:23 AM PDT

I need a game developed. It's a simple puzzle game like Minesweeper but more modern looking. 3d blocks that spin when you select one. A running score is kept. I don't need to keep the scores after the game is done. I would love to make this game myself and learn but I'm old with a family. I just don't have time. I won't distribute the game. It would be just for me to play on a live stream. So what skills and software knowledge would a person need to make a game like this? Would Unity be good? Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

    EDIT: Yes I am paying...

What are laws regarding adding a slot machine in my game? (It’s a mobile game published for the play store)

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 08:27 AM PDT

Is this considered gambling? You can trade In-Game currency for real money and you can also use it in slot machines, but you cannot turn in-game currency into real money, is this allowed in the play store?

    Making a SNES style jump’n’run

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 04:07 AM PDT

    Hey guys and girls.

So as you can read in the title I want to make my first steps in making a SNES style game. The problem is the making. I'm familir with unity and C# that's why I want to use that to make it. I don't want to make a complex game to sell it to others. I want to learn how to make that kind of games. But the problem is I don't know how.

The first problem is that the art, actually the pixel art. Do you know good tutorials where I can learn the basics? Furthermore I want to know if you know any artists who makes pixel art and gets paid for that. I want to make a Vikings based game and it might be hard for me to do the art alone.

The second thing, do you know any good tutorials that especially explain how to do a SNES style side scroller? I'm willing to spend a lot of time with that project so every I can get every help possible to do that.

Thank you for the help. If you have any question feel free to ask them :D
