    Looking for a little assurance..

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 01:50 PM PDT

Brief bio. I'm 23, married, no kids. Currently in the military.

I'm just getting into learning both front and back end development. I have been using Udemy, Lynda, and codeacademy pro. I want to be comfortably setup for a career in web development when (if not before) I get out. I have read that boot camps are really helpful but I don't have enough time for most and they are also pretty expensive. I picked up a "web dev bootcamp" on udemy and I'm working through that.

My current idea is to build a personal website and link everything that I do there....buuut I don't really have anything to do.. is freelancing a good option like upwork?

I am honestly just kinda nervous.. I feel like I'm running out of time to find a career and will forever be stuck in a job I'm miserable at. I love what I've learned in programming so far. I feel like web development is just going to be the tip of the iceberg for me.

Please any advice is greatly appreciated.

Best budget value for money laptop for designers?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 11:21 AM PDT

    Hi everyone!

I'm an amateur freelancer website developer and writer who just started last month and now earn around 1.2k$ a month I'm twenty years old so I also barely have any savings. I'm moving home next month I need to get a laptop as my current laptop isn't exactly in a good condition I can't ask my parents for any money as I'm trying to be independent. So my options are really limited.

    What am I looking for?

    • Light-weight as I will be travelling with it a lot
    • Something that will fulfill what I am currently doing (See below)
    • Something budget that is just about enough to do what I use it for

What Do I need it for? (order of descending importance)

    1. Website design: I use DIVI a WordPress builder
    2. Writing I use Google Drive a lot
    3. Multi-tasking between Slack and Chrome whilst website development
    4. Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator (rarely use these)

Secondary use: This is something I do not currently do but see myself using few months from now.

Coding: Getting into PHP very soon and probably see myself freelancing 4-6 months from now.

How to scale a box and maintain aspect ratio

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 04:43 PM PDT

I'm stuck with a layout problem. I'm trying to display a box with a fixed aspect ratio (video or image but with some additional things overlayed on tip) scaled to fit inside a box that has variable size based on viewport size and the content around it.

Lots of searching has told me that I can use the padding-bottom percentage trick to do this, but that only seems to work if my inner box is set to take up the full width of the outer box. Sometimes it will need to take up the full height and less width. The only other solutions I've seen that seem to fit the bill involve polling to get the size of the outer box and updating accordingly but that seems pretty nasty.

Any tricks I'm missing or is this hopeless?

In a bad spot professionally - advice wanted

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 04:24 PM PDT

I am currently on a project scheduled to last for "2-3 years" (so we know it'll be more like 4-5 years) that is doomed to fail for many reasons.

I am the unofficial tech lead for this project. My boss is investing over 5k in training this year alone for me to learn an enterprise, .NET-based CMS that my company is switching to. Everyone else on my team has little to no coding ability. I am on a tiny team of 6.

In addition, because I have spent so much time over the past three years working with PHP, CSS, JS, Python, Linux, and other web dev technologies, my boss admitted to me that I am underpaid and began the paperwork of having my job title changed (it is a non-standard job title, not "web developer" or even "webmaster") which would include a pay increase. This conversation occurred about a year ago and nothing has changed. Further, nobody from HR or senior management has discussed the status of the change with me that my boss supposedly talked to them about. However, other staff in the organization have received promotions.

Web devs are paid really good in my city. Glassdoor averages indicate that I am underpaid by about 10-20k.

To rub some salt into this, one of my team members has the same job title as me but has no coding ability, no interest in learning to code, and earns 20-30k more than I do because the payscale is based on seniority. I regularly help him or fix his mistakes. He also has a personal friendship with my boss and he has a bit of an attitude with me at times. We just annoy each other a lot. But since he is personal friends with the boss, I can't really say anything too critical to him (since I don't want to hurt my relationship with my boss). I find myself walking on eggshells around him.

There are many more problems the organization has that I won't bother to list. I have been with this organization for almost three years now and with such crappy conditions I am obviously planning to leave.

The problem is...how? Quitting is going to screw my department pretty good because they are depending on me to be the tech lead for this major project, not to mention how much money they've spent on me this year. So I feel like even though my annual reviews have been outstanding, if anyone calls the company they're going to get a bad reference and then I won't be able to get hired anywhere else.

This company is practically speaking my only job history. Although I actually had a job as a sofware developer right out of college (as well as an internship during college), they are quite long ago because between my last software job and my current job, I was unemployed for 16 months (one period for 9 months, another period of 7 months) and worked two jobs not related to IT (line cook and non-profit program manager - hey I was trying to pay the bills). I started with this company as a temp before being brought on permanently.

So as far as writing a resume that has any chance of getting me hired, I am planning to leave off my internship and first software job and just start with the temp work leading to what I've done so far. It looks good and tells a story without the complexity of the unemployment and unrelated work I did before.

But that all assumes my current company would give me a good reference when I go elsewhere. Doubtful if I'm leaving in the middle of what is their biggest project to date. It affects the entire organization.

When I leave my job at the end of the year, I will have about 35k in savings. I am single and willing to move anywhere in the world. I am 33.

I currently don't have any certifications, a CS degree, or a Github portfolio (all my fault I admit).

What would you do in my position?

    Young Developer Salary Questions

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:33 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I am a young developer (25 y.o.) who has just under 3.5 years experience in web development. My current role I focus on full stack development. I use C#, VB.Net, generic front end markup (html, css, LESS) and on the backend am also responsible for logic code (Data access layers) as well as T-SQL and stored procedures.

I am one of two developers who is responsible for the corporations digital assets. On a daily basis I am doing anything from stored procs to front end work.

My current salary is around 56k about an hour north of Philadelphia.

What would you expect your salary to be for this amount of experience and responsibility?

How should I approach a minimal security client management login?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 02:50 PM PDT

My client has requested a client portal for individuals to access privately. They want a login for the portal. The site is currently a frontend only image/video gallery that shows off their work. What they want is a custom section that clients access with a login. They don't have strict security requirements. Effectively, they want to share renderings of their work with clients and want it hidden from general browsers to the site to protect trade secrets for the work they are proposing.

I created a fully functional login with Okta on localhost, but Heroku is telling me we have to upgrade to enterprise in order to use SSO services.

The site currently doesn't have a backend its just the react front end. I know I can use passport and I've gotten Amazon IAM to work with Heroku in the past, but both seem heavier than the current need and would require and I'm trying to avoid building in Express to run anything on the backend.

Are there any solutions I can use where its all front end?

I'm happy to provide any follow up information if necessary.

Does anyone use firefox to debug? I'm hoping someone can help me with this issue.

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 02:22 PM PDT

When using Firefox 61.0.1 (64-bit) on Ubuntu, I do a console.log(varName); and on the console all I see is <unavailable> get printed.

I am starting to develop and use Chrome instead of Firefox as I haven't found a solution. I'm really used to Firefox, does anyone know a way to fix this? or a plugin I could use? or should I just set Chrome to my default browser from now on...

Someone on a previous post about this suggested using:

    console.log(JSON.stringify(varName, null, 4))

The code above does work, but I don't want to use this String thing all the time....Am I destined to switch over and start using chrome from now on?

How to get a text drop-down?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 12:56 PM PDT

So I'm trying to design a restaurant menu. When the user clicks on a menu item I want the description of that item to show up underneath. All I can really find online are drop-down menus though, so not sure how to implement this with Javascript. Any ideas? I'm thinking of storing the menu in a table, and when the item is clicked have the description's display switch from "none" to "block". But I'm having trouble figuring out the drop-down animation.

I'm also planning on having the menu be tabbed, so different tabs for breakfast, sandwiches, burgers, etc. Which I'm sure I can figure out but I've no idea how to make it such that the tabs appear on the side of the div, going down vertically. Any pointers there would be appreciated as well.

A question related to Progressive web apps(PWA)

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 12:50 PM PDT

I have heard that in PWAs, we can add icons on the home screen of mobile phones. Can we do the same for desktop as well? Meaning, having an icon on desktop which will take me to the (previously cached) web page when offline? Can PWAs do that?

Trying to create a webpage where I can filter and search an SQLite db by dropdown options... what next?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 12:28 PM PDT

I'm really new to web-dev. I'm trying to build a webpage to search / filter for PDF documents that will ideally be stored as blobs in an SQLite database. A Node.js server has been set up with the assistance of a friend but I'd like to learn too and I'm wondering how to make the front-end to talk to the db. I'm guessing scripting is involved? I'm quite proficient in Python so I'm trying to find ways to have the page and db talk to each other with that. I know PHP is the standard for that but I'd just prefer Python if possible.

Also I haven't created the front-end layout yet. Is this something I should be doing first? Any advice at all would be appreciated.

    PHPinit

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 12:07 PM PDT

    Hi,

I wanted to share some resource PHP models that I have scraped together from old projects. It is 20+ models for a variety of back-end functionality, which may help you save time with some of the tedious things you find yourself doing on new projects.

I am not quite done with everything yet, i.e. the preview page and CMS for same, but I would really appreciate a bit of feedback - If it is even worth continuing.

The examples can be found on PHPinit.com.

The models can be found on Github.

The preview page, along with its CMS, can also be found on Github

I am still learning, so if you find anything that seems stupid, out of order, or if you have a better way of doing some of the things these models do, please do let me know.

    Thank you.

How to start working on a side project without designing skills?

    Posted: 29 Aug 2018 11:51 AM PDT

So I have some experience with web development, mostly backend. Did the usual University projects, had a job as a student developing and maintaining a web app, and various tutorials.

Lately I really want to start on a side project to learn a thing or two and challenge myself. I started designing (with 0 artistic sense) the UI and I just hate it. The whole process, the outcome, and I just loose interest in continuing to design.

How do I overcome this issue? The thing is that I will probably loose interest in developing the actual app later if it looks like a rotten potato.

Or is there maybe any full designs for apps that are free and I just need to code them? Not for commercial purposes ofcourse, only to learn.

    Thanks for all the advices.

Tldr: I cant design and I want to start on a side project to learn and push myself. When designing the UI I hate the process and the outcome. How to overcome this?

Edit: The side project I want to try out is a web app for project management, did a basic one before and I want to remake it with an actual design not just rows and inputs.
