Does it look bad to recruiters if I'm not currently employed? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:14 AM PDT I am currently employed, but the company/project I'm on right now is really bad. My mental health has taken (and is still taking) a huge hit and I feel like I really need to get out now with or without a backup. I have been sending out a couple resumes as I get the chance but it hasn't been many. So, I'm mostly just wondering, if I quit now without a backup, will recruiters think I was fired? And will this negatively impact my chances of getting a response? Edit: Thank you all for your input. I haven't replied to many of your comments but I've read them all. It seems the general consensus is that it shouldn't cause an immediate disqualification from a position but I'll likely have to have a good way to explain why I'm not currently employed. I can't program at work without any help and I don't know what to do Posted: 01 Aug 2018 10:21 AM PDT I'm in a junior dev position at a company who uses Rails+JS. I've been working on the team for about 8-9 months, and I still can't make a single thing work without needing help from somebody. The other juniors who joined at the same time as me seem to be doing fine, but I'm really not improving. My tech lead keeps saying that it doesn't matter how long it takes to solve a problem, but it's killing me that it takes me a few days to tackle a problem the other juniors could solve within a few hours. Its literally making me depressed knowing that I'm not up to par, as this job is the only thing I have going for me, but I don't see the point if I'm still incapable of working alone on any task after nearly a year. Would really like some advice [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2018 04:51 PM PDT I never did an internship so I guess that's the reason. I have no professional experience in software development. I've had my college career center check my resume and besides my them suggesting to change my email from my school's email to something "more professional" like gmail or something there was nothing wrong with it. I still am getting rejected. I have also been applying to junior dev positions so I'm not like trying to get super senior dev management jobs. Just something to get me started (even though I have sent my resume to senior positions because fuck it I'll take anything if they give it to me). One of my biggest problems is also there are a shit ton of web development jobs and I have done web dev before but that was years ago and wasn't for a job or anything. Just me messing about and I don't consider myself a web dev because that tech moves too fast for me to keep up. Mostly things that ask C++ or Java. There are also database jobs requiring SQL that I would say I know nothing about. I don't know what to do. So pissed because I just want an entry level job to get experience and I'm not getting a single chance to prove myself. [link] [comments] |
Career Growth in NYC vs the rest of the east coast Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:28 PM PDT Been reading more and more about how NYC isn't actually that great for software devs and I was wondering about other people's experiences. RN I'm at around 90 one year out of school at a rando startup but friends in the Philadelphia area are hit at miss only making a few thousand a year less than me, while rent in NY for something walkable to work is >2250. so i feel like I'm making less than i am. I'm hoping to just work my ass off to get the raises i want for the living situation id like in the city, but out of the other east coast cities, have any of you who've worked in the big apple noticed that friends are getting nearly as much as you while living in DC/Boston/Philly which have a much lower CoL? Question about the day to day life of software/cyber security consultants. Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:44 AM PDT Hello all, I am wrapping up my first internship now and headed into the fall semester of my second year. The internship has been great experience for me, as it is at a fortune 250 company, and I have really enjoyed getting hands-on experience. However, I am not a huge fan of corporate culture. Maybe its just real life slapping me in the face and realizing how many hours 40 hours a week really is, but I am not a huge fan of the whole sit in a cubicle for 8 hours a day. Granted, this is not a tech company so the main focus is not the technology driving the corporation, and I am aware this plays a fairly large role in the overall culture of the cloud engineering department (where I am). Many tech companies are doing their best to nix the whole 8-hour-cubicle, and thus that may be something I enjoy better. I love the actual programming and tech, and have no problem sitting at my desk and grinding away on code, I just think it is a culture thing for me (not sure if that makes any sense). My question is what does a day to day life of a consultant look like? Do you all still actually get your hands dirty in code or is in mostly a hands off approach? Are there a good amount of open jobs out there, or are they more difficult to come by? I find the idea of traveling and pursing technology extremely exciting and something I may be interested in doing, especially after learning what I do and don't like during my first real work experience. Thanks! edit: spelling [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:44 PM PDT I'm wondering what can be offered on the Masters level that the BS cannot? was it better job placement? Or simply wanting to advance their knowledge in the field of CompSci. I'm looking to switch careers. Thanks [link] [comments] |
What’s the job market like for IOS Developers? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 11:18 AM PDT I originally changed majors from Nursing to CS because I thought that being an IOS Developer was my dream job. During my undergrad in CS - No IOS development classes were offered at my university. Now I'm a CS grad & Im thinking of teaching myself but first I'm doing research to see if it's worth my time. What is the job market for IOS Developers like? [link] [comments] |
Are you guys constantly spammed on LinkedIn by bullshit recruiters? How do you filter the garbage? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:07 PM PDT I've read that LinkedIn is the best way to get offers (other than being referred by a friend), but I seriously get nothing but junk. All of it is either sketchy shell companies that funnel to India or insane lowball offers or a fake recruiter trying to get me to make an account on their LinkedIn competitor or even recruiters just spamming everyone with software on their page. And then I ask for details about the position and their like "it's best if I call you to explain the companies and I'll see if your skills match one of their positions." Like what? Just look at my damn LinkedIn. Am I being unreasonable to want to know a position title and description and salary first? I'm seriously annoyed by all the bullshit. /rant [link] [comments] |
Good Entry Level IT Jobs For Work Experince Posted: 01 Aug 2018 03:49 PM PDT So I want to become a Computer Systems Administrator, but when looking for job listings and on other websites, I have to have around 3-5 years of prior experience. One thing you may need to know is I am 17 right now and I plan on doing Computer Science at Illinois State University. I do plan on doing internships during college as well if that is some information you would like to know, but after all of that, what are good entry level IT jobs for prior work experience to become a CSA. Posted: 01 Aug 2018 03:31 PM PDT Started a new job six weeks ago, turns out the place is a shambles and I need out. Briefly:
So obviously my next step is to start looking for work, but I don't know how to explain to recruiters or potential employers that my brand new job isn't working out already. Is it ok to just say I understand them to be closing the office? Should I just explain that I'm not getting the support I was promised? I already updated linkedin with the new role - should I roll that back and pretend I'm still at my last job? [link] [comments] |
Does the economy significantly affect internships? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:51 AM PDT While there is news that full time unemployment is at an all time low, does the same apply for summer 2019 internships?Does the trade war affect summer 2019 internships significantly? I'm in the US and so far I haven't noticed any difference with my current internship in regards to economy and trade conflict. [link] [comments] |
Is it rude to ask about salary upfront when cold-contacted by 3p recruiters? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 04:15 PM PDT Maybe this question is more appropriate to /r/ExperiencedDevs, but here goes. Like many here, I get cold-contacted about once a week, usually via LinkedIn or Stack Overflow. (I'm in NYC and have lots of full-stack, front-end and Rails experience, so this is not surprising.) The "problem" is that realistically most will not be able to match my current compensation (approaching 200k), let alone exceed, and it's highly unlikely that I'd accept an offer for less. (Unfortunately, the FAANGs of the world aren't trying to recruit me...) My question is, is it rude to send back a quick reply asking what the salary range is? I don't want to sound uber-greedy, but I also don't want to waste time discussing past experience etc for no reason. (I've been silently ignoring the messages, but I'm considering switching tactics.) Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2018 02:41 PM PDT During a review meeting with my superior I attempted to get reassigned to a part of the company that's currently facing a huge influx of new projects and won't be able to handle it on their own. At first things went well: he said he would pull me in and increase my participation on the new projects. However, when I tried to go around the pep talk, he wall me in. Essentially he said I put myself into a difficult position. He said I'm so professional and good at my job that I god sidelined and now I'm sort of stuck on old projects that nobody else can handle. When I tried to point out that none of my coworkers was ever told by management to work on these with full responsibility, he replied that "we are not all the same" and "some people don't do anyhting they are asked so the company needs to deal with employees gracefully". I almost lost it. I told him "do I have to stop doing my job so that others are forced to step up, or should I keep working ahrd while others get the best work for free? Am I being punished instead of rewarded for being more professional than those coworkers who complain all the time?" Now my coworkers are benefitting from the company's well being provided by my work, and my superior is letting this happen, giving some of them work that essentially brings in no money and he didn't even punished them for refusing to work! He talked himself around the issue and then I left. What the hell is happening here? I'm so angry I'm not sure I'll go to work tomorrow... Did I make a mistake by not complaining and doing my job? What the hell does "I was too professional" mean? edit: my superior is one of the men who OWN the company. [link] [comments] |
Junior dev, is my team dumping sysadmin/ops work on me? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:12 AM PDT I started my first job as a .NET/C# developer 10 months ago and it was pretty decent at first. I got to work on some interesting stuff but lately, it seems like my manager and TL are giving me lengthy, mundane tasks that feel like I'm being pushed away from the development side of things. I'm going to have to spend a month or maybe longer handling the build and deployment of a few of our software applications to Win10 workstations from Win7. I have to upgrade all of our dependencies to the latest and greatest. They also want me to rebuild our development environment(VMs) with the new OS, upgrade everthing, same deal as above. Isn't this shit the job of some ops person? It seems they're offloading all this crap on me because I'm the only Junior and they want the rest of the team continuing to develop away. Is this kind of work atypical for a dev job? Should I find a new job? [link] [comments] |
product manager thinking of switching to dev career path Posted: 01 Aug 2018 06:06 AM PDT Hey guys I have pretty specific question about carreer in IT, any input would be appreciated, and if someone has a hiring background - even more so. In short - I am 29 y/o, math major and a product manager in tech company. I had some VERY basic formal programming training (CS50-like), and learning it was really enjoyable for me. Hence at work, I try to do (very) simple things that other PMs usually outsource to devs by myself (ofc it is shit-tier stuff like some ML prototyping, java hbase dumpjobs, etc.) Lately I also started self-studying some CS books (finished Linux command line, Algorithm design manual, now very slowly making my way through SICP). I guess my question is - while I plan on keeping learning about CS/programming stuff as a hobby - is there an actual possibility of starting a new carreer path as a dev, if I got more serious about studying? What would you think if a 30ish y/o dude applied for a junior dev position? Is it a no-go for those who are hiring? I understand I would have to settle for lower pay, I just wonder if the idea is plausible at all. I am not really into "follow your dreams" TED talks, I honestly wanna know what would be a reality of my situation if I decided to go for it. Thank you very much for any input. [link] [comments] |
Want to start new job next January - when to start searching? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 08:53 PM PDT I'm currently employed as a full time dev. I want to jump ship next January and start a new job somewhere else. When should I start job searching? If I got a job offer as early as November, would companies wait for me to start next January? Also if I got a job offer early, I don't want to tell my boss until next January. I start this year January so if I leave before next January I don't get my 401k matching. How to handle this situation? [link] [comments] |
Non-CS STEM degree with a low GPA, what's the best way for me to get my foot in the door for CS? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 08:49 PM PDT Here's my situation:
I sent out applications for (mostly front end) positions, most of the time I don't hear back. I got a couple of hackerrank challenges (which I've deemed the bane of my existence) and have found them difficult and never passed. I've started practicing leetcode in hopes of getting better. I think my biggest obstacle right now is my lack of projects, I have ideas for apps that I want to make, but have a hard time executing them because of some arbitrary mental block (kind of like writers block but for writing code). Anyway, am I on the right track? Any suggestions are much appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2018 05:03 PM PDT This has way too many red flags but I don't get the end game here. Anyone seen something like this job fair before? Last paragraph is really weird. https://sanantonio.craigslist.org/sad/d/computer-software-and/6658688222.html [link] [comments] |
Personal Project - Going to Code Drone Cluster but Hard Coded Posted: 01 Aug 2018 08:45 PM PDT Will the hiring manager take my work seriously in consideration for interview? [link] [comments] |
Has anyone worked with RippleMatch before? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 08:13 PM PDT Someone from RippleMatch reached out to me a few days ago on LinkedIn saying they could put me in touch with some top companies (such as Citadel, Two Sigma, Left, etc.). It sounds a little too good to be true, with how many eye-catching names they threw out, but I figure no reason not to pursue unless otherwise persuaded. Just wondering if anyone has worked with them or has been reached out to, and what the process was. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2018 12:31 PM PDT I did an onsite for junior software engineer. It seemed to go well. After two weeks, I was informed my interview process was changed into senior software engineer. So I did another interview for senior. Today I received the rejection with the feedback "I know you originally applied for the Software position and when we interviewed you for that position, the hiring manager felt the senior position was a better fit, but you were considered for both positions at the time." Can someone explain to me how that makes sense? How can I be rejected from the junior one yet be a "better fit" for the senior one at the same time? [link] [comments] |
I love programming in C... Am I screwed in the job market? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 08:02 PM PDT I have experience in plenty of programming languages (e.g. java, JavaScript, python, c#, and others) but I feel like there is so much to learn about C and what can be done with it. I just find it to be a way cooler language than anything else. BUT I realize no one really gives a shit about C anymore since all the action is in higher level languages and Webdev stuff. So, if I persue learning C on my own, and try to get a job with C programming, will I A. never get a job like that, or B. have a shitty life doing cheap grunt programming as like a sysadmin. Not that theres anything wromg with being a sysadmin. Just, how viable is life as a C programmer these days? I guess thats my question. [link] [comments] |
Never ever state your desired salary! I learned it the hard way. Lost an offer! Posted: 01 Aug 2018 03:59 PM PDT I made this thread recently: https://www.reddit.com/r/cscareerquestions/comments/93s5vf/weirdest_rejection/ I feel I had to make this one in order to never forget. After multiple onsites, I was finally about to get an offer. At the end, I was asked to state a salary. I said, "it depends, the company is more important, and I'm just looking for a job". He kept insisting on a number, so I said "based on my skills, recommendations, and responsibilities for this role, I desire $x." Apparently it was out of their budget, so I received a rejection with the feedback "bad fit." Why do I think it's because of salary? Cause they tried to interview me for a higher title at my stated salary, after I said it. Honestly, fuck me in the ass. I really needed this. Why is interviewing so hard? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2018 07:36 PM PDT Junior guy was a SQL analyst at my company who apparently showed a lot of potential and expressed an interest in software engineering. Great! On top of his regular duties he has been given small tasks/bugs to work on for experience. I was asked if I would be a point of contact for him if he had questions or needed help and I was happy to do that. However, 18+ months later, I feel like he really hasn't gotten any better and I don't think he will ever be successful as a software engineer. It doesn't seem like he hasn't put any effort into practicing or learning on his own. So he takes up my time with code reviews where I have to point out really fucking basic mistakes. Or answer the same questions over and over or being so clueless when asking for guidance I almost have to do all of the problem solving for him. I want to tell our boss stop giving him bug tickets until he demonstrates some sort of independent progress. I feel like I'm wasting my time helping someone who isn't helping themselves. Asking strangers for referrals? Posted: 01 Aug 2018 09:51 AM PDT On Blind I often see people ask strangers for referrals.Has anyone in here done something like that? Ask on Blind for a referral? I know employees usually get a bonus if the person is hired but still seems sort of shady to me. [link] [comments] |
